Apple iPhone 8 Rumored Features and Specs

Apple is heading towards celebrating the 10^th year anniversary of iPhones this coming August and for this reason, another iPhone is presumed to be launched by the Cupertino giant. However, rumors suggesting that this year's iPhone would be revolutionary and that basically means, eliminating most of its traditional features as well as specs; thus, leaving it out as Tim Cook's legacy.

To begin with, iPhone 8 innovative features would include a curved plastic OLED screen that comes with a touch ID mounted on the side of the phone. According to MacWorld, the redesigned iPhone 8 is presumed to change the landscape of the smartphone industry.

Furthermore, major specs improvements are also expected from the upcoming iPhone 8 such as enhanced camera features and its processor which is rumored to utilized Apple's new AX11 mobile chipsets. In addition, haptic feedback feature is also expected to upgrade and there is a possibility that iPhone 8 could be the first smartphone in the world to feature the wireless charging technology.

Will iPhone 8 be Apple's Last Hurrah?

A market analyst named Andrew Uerkwitz boldly predicted that iPhone 8 will be he Cupertino giant's last hurrah at least for the smartphone industry. In an interview with MarketWatch, Apple is heading towards a decade of downfall when it comes to generating revenue from their iPhone products because of so many low-cost and second-hand phones that are available in the market today.

Moreover, another market analyst named Monness Crespi Hardt's James Cakmak also had the same prediction and mentioned competitors such as Google and Amazon which slowly dominate not only the smartphone market but also AR and VR realms and video-streaming. Cakmak remarked that Apple will face turbulent times and it may take years for them to go back into the arena again.

iPhone 7 vs. Google Pixel: Why I'm switching to Pixel

I had been an Android user (a Nexus user, to be precise) since day one of my smartphone journey. I avoided the iPhone due to Apple’s tight-fisted control over hardware and software. But in 2015, when T-Mobile announced the Jump on Demand program, I jumped on the iPhone bandwagon and bought my first iPhone knowing that I could switch to up to three new devices in a year.

There were a lot of things in the iPhone 6S Plus (find it on Amazon) that I loved, including the camera (especially the burst shots feature).

I also liked the family sharing of purchased applications, games, movies, music, TV shows and eBooks. I ended up moving my wife, our au-pair and my son to iPhone because at that time Google didn't offer a family sharing plan. Instead of buying the same content four times for each device, I could buy once and share across those users.

And then there was the vendor lock within Android. Samsung offers apps for its Smart TV or other devices only for Galaxy phones. Our Nexus and Motorola devices, despite running Android, would not run those apps.

Sticking to iPhone was a no-brainer and as soon as Apple released iPhone 7 Plus (find it on Amazon), I pre-ordered it via the T-Mobile Jump on Demand program.

By that time I had lost interest in Android and also bought the iPad Pro. My Nexus devices started to collect dust. I had become an iOS user.

Then Pixel happened.

When Google announced Pixel phones, killing the Nexus family, I had zero excitement; I was a happy iPhone user.

During a recent tech conference, Frederic Lardinois of TechCrunch offered to let folks play with his Pixel phone. After using not Android for so long, I realized all that I was missing. At that time Pixel was out of stock, so I asked Google and they were kind enough to send the 32 GB version of Pixel XL (find it on Amazon) for me to review.

I have been playing with the Pixel for a few weeks now and I find myself debating whether to go back to Android, stick with iOS or keep both.

Camera: Initially I liked the iPhone 7 camera, but when I compared shots with my Nikon D750, I found that the tiny sensor and tiny lens on the iPhone were no match for my full format DSLR sensor and 50mm f/1.4 prime lens. There was no comparison between the sharpness, depth of field, color accuracy and overall quality of the images shot with my DSLR. If you are someone who never owned anything other than a cheap point and shoot camera, iPhone is good for you. But if you are really into photography, then don’t listen to any of those people who recommend iPhone over DSLR. Yes, you can get a few good shots in really perfect lighting conditions, but beyond that when you look back at your pictures you will regret not shooting them from your DSLR.

Family sharing: Without much fanfare, Google has brought family sharing to Android, allowing you to add up to five family members to your account. The only gripe I have is that unlike Apple, Google doesn’t offer any options for kids under 18, so while I can have my kids' accounts on iOS devices, I can’t do the same on Android and I have to give access to my account, which is less than ideal.

OTA Updates: I am never going to buy a device that drifts away from stock Android (I am looking at you Samsung) and delays updates. While Nexus was a developer device, Pixels are great consumer devices that compete directly with iPhones. And Pixel will get updates as usual. So that’s not a deal breaker either.

Entertainment: I don’t play games on my phone or watch movies on it. Yes, I do use it for music. Apple Music has a very tiny selection when compared with Google Music and iTunes. If you want to listen to old German songs, YouTube has it. You want new year’s songs, YouTube has it. You want old Indian classical songs, YouTube has it. Apple Music, on the other hand, has none of those options. On top of that if you pay for YouTube Red, not only do you get an ad-free experience and ability to download videos and songs for offline playback, you also get access to Google Music, for free.

AirPlay vs Google Cast: As much as I liked AirPlay, Apple’s tight control over the protocol has left me with very few devices that work with AirPlay. With Chromecast, however, I can turn any great speaker into a smart speaker.

Sharing is easier: Both iOS and Android offer sandboxing, restricting applications within the permissions you have given them. But it’s more annoying and frustrating to share content across applications in iOS. For example, you can’t directly upload images to your Dropbox folder from the photo app. You have to open the Dropbox app to upload images. On Android, once you install an app, you can access that app from anywhere. It’s very easy to work across apps on Android.

Backup and upload: If you want to keep a backup of your images and videos on Dropbox and Google Drive, iOS is going to make your life miserable. Apple fills up your space very quickly forcing you to buy iCloud storage. So you may want to keep a copy of your files on Dropbox or Google Drive. Even if you enable background upload, iOS pauses these apps after a certain time so your uploads will pause. You have to keep that app open in order for upload to work. Apple allows iCloud to keep uploading. It’s a heavy-handed approach that really annoys me. On Android, once you give an app permission for background upload, you can rest assured that all your files will be backed up.

Data transfer: Apple doesn’t expose the file system on iOS so you can’t see the file system and manage your own files as you can on your PC. You can’t plug in your iOS device to a computer and transfer files. No. You. Can’t. On Android, Google exposes the file system and you can easily manage your files using a file manager. You can plug in your Android device to your PC and easily transfer files. Simple.

Open app ecosystem: It’s no news, but Apple doesn’t allow me to install apps from outside the App Store. They want complete control over the app ecosystem to get their 30 percent cut from each purchase. On Android, you can easily install apps from outside the Google Play Store. Easy.

Unlike many who find jumped into Apple's ecosystem with both feet, it won’t be hard for me to switch because when I bought the iPhone I made a conscious decision to use only those apps and service that are not exclusive to iOS. The apps that I use are also available on Android so I can very easily jump ship.

Siri vs. Google Assistant: After all these years Siri hasn't grown much. It is still nothing more than a gimmick that can’t do anything smart. Google Assistant has shown us what true AI is (read my article on Amazon Echo vs. Google Home). Once you have used Google Assistant, you will never go back to Siri.

Conclusion: After looking at all these points, I see no reason for sticking to the iPhone. Pixel has much more to offer. Looking at the open app ecosystem, ease of navigation, ease of sharing, the smartest virtual assistant, etc., switching to Pixel is a no brainer.

iPhone may have the retina display, but Google's phone is Pixel perfect.

The iPhone's “Theater Mode” Might Actually Be Good for Movies

Earlier this week, word began to circulate that the next update of the iPhone’s operating system, iOS 10.3, would include a feature called “theater mode,” which was promptly followed by speculation that it would be some combination of settings designed to minimize the distraction to others when using your phone during a movie screening. Not surprisingly, the response from diehard cinephiles was instantly negative: The Alamo Drafthouse theater chain, which has become famous for its campaign against in-theater texting, tweeted that iPhones “already have a theater mode” with a screenshot of the “off” button, and Alamo CEO Tim League followed up with a statement that if the rumors were true, “I may have to book a ticket to Cupertino and pack my can of whoop-ass.” Empire magazine’s Nev Pierce posted a picture of the “new device to adjust the screens of phones in used in cinemas”: a hammer.

Let us stipulate that using your phone during a movie is a bad thing. It is nonetheless something people do and will continue to do, whether Apple’s software adjustments abet it or not. The concern is that adding a official theater mode—one that, according to some reports, will be triggered with a popcorn-bucket icon—legitimizes the bad behavior, and even encourages it. If you’ve got theater mode, you might as well take advantage of it, right? But at the moment, movie theaters, especially commercial multiplexes, are like the wild west, with no ushers to appeal to when the when the system breaks down. If theater owners won’t enforce the rules, maybe cell phone manufacturers need to write some new ones.

Maybe adding a theater mode would normalize bad behavior, but it’s could also institutionalize good, which is to say more thoughtful, behavior as well. If iPhones have a theater mode, people will use it, but at least some of them will be the ones who sit down in the third row and blithely hold their phones up to their faces at full brightness so the entire theater can see them as they do. If adding a dedicated feature pushes them towards the idea that cell phones should be used differently in a darkened movie theater than in broad daylight, that’s a win.

Seeing a movie with a crowd means giving up a certain degree of control over your environment: People may laugh at something you find sad, or loudly sneeze over a key line of dialogue, and they may want to check if that text they just got is from the babysitter or the friend they’re meeting after the show. (Note that this cuts both ways: If you’re using a phone in a movie and someone asks you to put it away, you don’t get to respond as if they’ve requested you tear out your own spleen.) Cinephiles like to evoke the idea of theaters as “movie church,” a sacred space where viewers commune with the screen in rapt collective silence, but it’s all right if some movies are more like a raucous Baptist service than a gloomy Episcopalian slog.

It’s already possible to put an iPhone into something resembling “theater mode”: Switch it to vibrate, dim the brightness, and, in the phone’s Accessibility settings, set it to invert the screen’s colors when you triple-tap the home button, which changes black to white and greatly reduces ambient light. It’s not perfect, but it’s the equivalent of whispering to the person next to you rather than belting out “What did he just say?” as if you’re asking someone in the next room. A reasonably proficient iPhone user can do all three steps in about five seconds, less time than it takes to ignore a multiplex’s “Please silence your phones” announcement, but many people don’t—at least in some cases because it doesn’t occur to them. If theater mode gets them to think long enough to press the relevant button, that’s a step in the right direction.

With Apple's 'iPhone 8' rumored to ditch home button, 'Galaxy S8' leak suggests Samsung following suit

As rumors continue to suggest Apple will ditch the home button on this year's flagship "iPhone 8" redesign, a newly leaked image claims to show Samsung's next-generation "Galaxy S8" handset also deleting its own home button.

The picture suggests that the bottom bezel under the display will simply feature the Samsung logo, and will not have a physical home button like is found on the existing S7 series. The alleged "S8" was shown in a photo posted to Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo, and first highlighted by Slashleaks.

Ditching the home button on an Android phone is easier than on an iPhone for a variety of reasons, including the fact that Android has default support for a virtual onscreen home button. Apple, meanwhile, has made its circular home button a central part of interacting with iOS devices by embedding the Touch ID fingerprint sensor beneath it since the iPhone 5s.

While numerous Android phones have eschewed physical buttons on the face and used the operating system's virtual button, Samsung's Galaxy series is the most popular Android handset on the market. Every model to date has featured an elongated, oval-shaped home button beneath the display.

Apple, meanwhile, is heavily rumored to ax the iconic physical home button from a high-end "iPhone 8" later this year. It has been suggested that the company could embed Touch ID within the iPhone's display, and use its proprietary "Taptic" feedback technology to simulate the feeling of pressing a home button without actually having a physical button present.

In fact, Apple may already have set the stage for this switch with its current iPhone 7, featuring a solid-state haptic home button that does not actually click. Instead, the button simulates the feeling of a click with Apple's Taptic Engine —the same technology used to also emulate clicks on the MacBook's Force Touch trackpad.

In all, it's rumored that Apple will release three new iPhone models in late 2017— a single premium 10th anniversary redesign with 5.2-inch OLED display, known colloquially as an "iPhone 8," and successors to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, in screen sizes of 4.7 and 5.5 inches, dubbed an "iPhone 7s" series.

With the iPhone 7 still fresh to market, it's not expected that Apple will introduce any new iPhone hardware until later this year, likely in the usual September timeframe.

Samsung, meanwhile, is believed to be gearing up to take the wraps off of its "Galaxy S8" lineup at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona. It runs from Feb. 27 to March 2, which would put a potential "S8" unveiling less than two months away.

Only power users know about these secret iPhone features

How long have you been an iPhone user? A year? Three years? Five years? Did you buy the original iPhone all the way back in 2007 like we did? Whatever the case, and however long you’ve been an iPhone user, we can promise you with absolute certainty that there are features buried in your smartphone that you had no idea were there. It’s completely unavoidable; there are so many features baked into iOS 10 these days, that it would be impossible to remember all of them.

Some of the lesser-known features in iOS 10 that you’re unaware of are probably useless to you, so it doesn’t matter if they stay hidden forever. But other features you’re currently unaware of could completely change the way you use your iPhone, and that’s why we share hidden iOS features as often as we can here on BGR. Today, we came across a nifty little resource with some secret iPhone features that only power users know about for the most part, and we would be remiss if we didn’t share it with you.

Reddit user “slidescream2013” took to the site on Wednesday to ask a simple question of the folks in the Apple subreddit. He or she recently purchased a new iPhone 7 Plus, and while it’s unclear if a jump was made from another platform, the user was looking for good examples of “little features or tweaks that aren’t super obvious or featured.”

The resulting tips were a good mix of key iPhone features that less savvy users are typically unaware of, and lesser-known features that only power users typically know about.

In the former category is one that we find ourselves explaining to people all the time, even though it seems obvious to most savvy iPhone users out there. When you pay at a POS terminal with Apple Pay, you don’t need to open the Wallet app or even use the double-tap shortcut on the home button (seriously, why is that shortcut even there?). Simply hold your iPhone next to the payment terminal, and Apple Pay will automatically open whether your iPhone is locked or unlocked on any screen.

Then there are some tips that power users are very familiar with, but that most other users are unaware of because they’re not obvious at all in iOS 10. Examples include 3D Touch shortcuts like a firm press on the flashlight icon in Control Center to choose low, medium or high brightness, or firmly pressing anywhere on the iOS keyboard to enter trackpad mode.

Beyond those, we move into tips that cover features that are far too obscure for anyone but a power user. For example, did you know your iPhone is hiding a special low light mode that’s different from Night Shift? Try this:

Open Settings > General> Accessibility> Zoom
Toggle Zoom to on
Three-finger tap the screen twice to zoom out
Exit the Settings app
Three-finger triple-tap anywhere on any screen to open the Zoom overlay
Tap Choose Filter > Low Light in order to enable low light mode
Set the filter back to None to disable low light mode

iPhone 7 Vs iPhone 6S Vs iPhone 6: What's The Difference?

Smartphone lifespans are going up and this has two dramatic effects. First, users often skip a generation before upgrading. Second, buying a year old smartphone at a reduced price is increasingly appealing. Consequently for Apple AAPL -0.04% iPhone 6 owners the iPhone 6S could prove as tempting as the iPhone 7. So what are their differences?

Let’s break them down...

Design & Size - Superficial Stagnation, Practical Progress

It’s easy to mix up these three phones with a quick glance as they all use the same core design Apple introduced with the iPhone 6 in 2014:

iPhone 6 - 138.1 x 67 x 6.9 mm (5.44 x 2.64 x 0.27 in) and 129 g (4.55 oz)
iPhone 6S - 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm (5.44 x 2.64 x 0.28 in) and 143 g (5.04 oz)
iPhone 7 - 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm (5.44 x 2.64 x 0.28 in) and 138 g (4.87 oz)

Obviously having a new phone which looks like a three year old phone isn’t great, especially as rivals develop ever slimmer bezels for more compact designs. But Apple hasn’t been sitting still each year when it comes to practicality.

The iPhone 6 uses Series 6000 aluminium, which is prone to bending, but this is fixed by the iPhone 6S which uses much stronger Series 7000 aluminium. Meanwhile the iPhone 7 retains this stronger chassis while adding water resistance (allow 30 minutes full submersion at depths of up to one metre) and a fixed home button with haptic (vibration) feedback which eliminates an infamous point of failure.

In addition to this you’ll find the iPhone 7 has external dual stereo speakers after Apple beefed up the earpiece speaker. This makes a dramatic difference to audio and is ideal for listening to audiobooks and podcasts.

But you also pay a price with the iPhone 7 as Apple has ‘courageously’ removed the headphone jack. If you use wireless headphones this won’t matter, but if you prefer wired you will need adapters and you can’t listen to music and charge your phone at the same time. Apple says its removal allowed it to add water resistance, but Samsung achieved this while keeping the jack (at least for now).

The iPhone 7 also drops the iPhone 6S’s Space Grey colour option leaving Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Black and (for just 128GB and 256GB options) introducing the truly dreadful Jet Black - avoid it like the plague!

Displays - Still LCD, But Improving

Apple’s inability to source OLED panels in large enough quantities for its iPhone range has long given rivals a welcome advantage (which may soon end). As such on paper the iPhones’ screens look rather pathetic, but there is more to these raw specifications than meets the eye:

iPhone 6, iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 - 4.7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD, 1334 x 750 pixels (326 ppi), 65.6% screen-to-body ratio

Firstly Apple has been making these panels brighter and more colour accurate with each generation. For example, the iPhone 7 is 25% brighter than the iPhone 6S (which was already brighter than the iPhone 6) and has support for a wide (P3) colour gamut. It’s not OLED and the resolutions are low by today’s standards but iPhones represent the best LCD panels you’ll find.

In addition to this the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 offer 3D Touch which gives users pressure sensitive ‘peek and pop’ shortcuts. It’s hard to tell what is and isn’t 3D Touch enabled which stops the system being intuitive, but where it does work (notably previewing emails and URLs and shortcuts on app icons) there are signs of its undoubted potential.

Performance - Apple Keeps Breaking Records

It isn’t even a competition now. Every year the new iPhone easily outstrips its rivals in both synthetic benchmarks and real world usage (though the Google Pixel comes very close in the latter), but Apple keeps setting new records:

iPhone 6 - Apple A8 chipset: Dual-core CPU, Quad core GPU, 1GB of RAM
iPhone 6S - Apple A9 chipset: Dual-core CPU, GPU: Six Core GPU, 2GB of RAM
iPhone 7 - Apple A10 Fusion chipset: Quad Core CPU, Six Core GPU, 2GB of RAM

What do these changes mean? In short the iPhone 6S CPU and GPU are 70% and 90% faster respectively than the iPhone 6, while the iPhone 7 has a 40% faster CPU and 50% faster GPU than the iPhone 6S. It’s a tremendous change in two generations. That said speed is relative to your needs and an iPhone 6S will still deliver top notch performance for the next few years.

Elsewhere you’ll find the iPhone 6 has a 150Mbit capable 4G modem that rises to 300Mbit with the iPhone 6S and 450Mbit with the iPhone 7. You’re unlikely to find or need 4G networks with more than 150Mbit on a regular basis but the advancement is there.

Lastly the iPhone 6S introduced a second generation Touch ID fingerprint sensor which is twice as fast and accurate as the iPhone 6, but it is unchanged in the iPhone 7.

Cameras - Advancement But No Longer Class Leading

While Apple continues to extend its performance advantage year-in-year out against rivals, the improvements made to its cameras have been more incremental to the extent that the iPhone has been overtaken by both the Galaxy S7 and Google Pixel.

But what if you’re committed to Apple’s ecosystem? Looking at the specifications alone, a lot has changed:

iPhone 6 - Rear: 8 megapixel sensor, f2.4 aperture, Focus Pixels, EIS, dual-LED flash, 4K video recording. Front: 1.2MP Front Camera, f2.4 aperture, 720p video recording
iPhone 6S - Rear: 12 megapixel sensor, f2.2 aperture, Focus Pixels, Software Image Stabilisation, dual-LED flash, 4K video recording. Front: 5MP Front Camera, f2.2 aperture, 720p video recording
iPhone 7 - Rear: 12 megapixel sensor, f/1.8 aperture, Focus Pixels, Optical Image Stabilisation, quad-LED (dual tone) flash, 4K video recording. Front: 7MP sensor, f/2.2 aperture, 1080p recording

In reality the biggest differences are actually on the secondary cameras where the woeful 1.2MP photos and videos on the iPhone 6 became respectable on the iPhone 6S and rather good on the iPhone 7.

As for the main rear camera, all continue to deliver excellent results in good conditions but it is at low light where differences show most. The Pixel remains the low light king, followed by the Galaxy S7 but you’ll find a big gap between the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 compared to the iPhone 6. Then again the dual camera of the iPhone 7 Plus is by far the most interesting of all Apple’s iPhones.

Elsewhere the iPhone 7 also adds ‘Raise to Wake’ (pickup the phone to preview notifications), which isn’t available on the other two models while ‘Tap to View’ (double tap the screen for the same effect) is coming but set to be an iPhone 8 exclusive.

Battery Life And Charging - Still Disappointing, Still Slow

Want to know an area where Apple has made next to no improvements over the last three iPhone generations? Battery life. While the Plus models remain stamina kings, the 4.7-inch models fall way behind both them and iPhone rivals with minimal capacity changes:

iPhone 6 - 1810 mAh
iPhone 6S - 1715 mAh
iPhone 7 - 1960 mAh

Yes, the iPhone 6S actually took a step backwards so Apple could squeeze in the haptic vibration motor for 3D Touch and the iPhone 7 doesn’t improve much over the iPhone 6 despite removing the headphone jack as Apple used most of the space to enlarge the haptic motor so it also could power the fixed home button.

One still relatively unknown hack is you can speed up iPhone charge times by using an iPad charger, but Apple still provides a low power charger in the box. Even then there remains no comparison to the mature quick charging technologies in Android rivals which can deliver a 30% charge in 15 minutes. What about wireless charging? Again that’s off the list, though yet again the iPhone 8 offers hope.

In short: if battery life is a priority stick to the iPhone Plus models or look at Google’s Pixel XL.

Storage And Price - Goodbye 16GB Nightmares

Credit to Apple here, after years of sticking to the loathsome 16GB entry level tier it doubled storage for both the iPhone 7 and (retrospectively) the iPhone 6S:

iPhone 6 - 16GB, 64GB, 128GB (no longer available to buy new)
iPhone 6S - 32GB ($549) and 128GB ($649) - no 256GB option available
iPhone 7 - 32GB ($649), 128GB ($749) and 256GB ($849)

The conundrum here is whether a 128GB iPhone 6S is a better purchase than the 32GB iPhone 7. That’ll depend on your priorities (storage vs speed, headphone jack vs water resistance, etc) but I’d be tempted to go with the iPhone 7 as it’ll receive iOS updates for an extra year and the extra performance will keep it faster for longer.

That said I think the Plus models are easily the best iPhones these days.

Bottom Line

A quick glance between the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 would suggest Apple has been standing still for the last three generations, but there have been consistent - if not mindblowing - improvements each year. Given their price differences, choosing between the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 is more difficult than it should be but the iPhone 6 is a model that is now starting to show its age.

My advice: if you don’t have to upgrade right now wait for Apple’s radically reinvented ‘all glass’ iPhone 8 which will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone. That’s the model which is expected to make significant new advances...

According to leak after leak, the 2017 iPhone will have a radical new design, get significantly larger and more expensive but I can also exclusively reveal two essential new additions the range has been crying out for for years…

Speaking with famed leaker Sonny Dickson, I have learnt the following:

Get Ready For Fast Charging

Inside all three new 2017 iPhones (Dickson reiterates previous sources that there will be three distinct new models) will be a new ‘Tristar 3, Hydra’ chip which manages the charging port.

“In normal people words… [it] will include fast charging,” he explained. But before you celebrate there are a couple of key unknowns here.

Firstly whether the fast charging will be compatible with any current fast charging standards. Since this isn’t by Qualcomm it won’t be “Quick Charge” but there is a chance it could be the fast charging built into USB 3.1 - a standard Apple AAPL +0.18% is very keen on across the MacBook range - though I highly doubt we’ll see a switch from Lightning due to its lucrative proprietary licensing fees.

Secondly just because the port can handle fast charging doesn’t mean Apple wants to implement it. After all current iPhones can charge more quickly using an iPad charger (try it out) but Apple never supplies this more powerful charger in the box despite the high price tag. Clearly, for whatever reason, Apple wants it to remain off the radar for mainstream customers.

And lastly there’s no mention of wireless charging, but I remain hopeful given the change of chassis material.

Tap to Wake Is An ‘iPhone 8’ Exclusive

Just because three new iPhone models are expected in 2017, doesn’t mean there will be parity between them.

Dickson explains that while Apple is finally catching up to Android rivals by adding Tap To Wake, it will only feature on the so-called ‘iPhone 8’ which will feature a brand new design rather than the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus which will mimic Apple designs since the iPhone 6 and launch alongside it.

This seems a strange one to me given Tap To Wake - the action of being able to tap a phone screen to easily preview your notifications - is a staple of many low end Android phones (queue some laughter from Android owners).

That said Dickson’s source says it is “currently on the roadmap” for the iPhone 8 only, which means things could change. Typically Apple only finalises the feature set for its new iPhones in Q1.

Necessary Imitation Behind Innovation?

Let’s face it, Apple needs a big 2017 to blow away the notion (rightly or wrongly) that declining iPhone sales and three generations of visually similar models mean it has forgotten how to innovate. But the company also needs to do some essential housekeeping and catch up with key features it has disregarded for too long.

Consequently while the ‘All Curve’ OLED display and enhanced dual camera tech may grab all the headlines on release, remember that Tap to Wake and fast charging (in particular) are likely to be just as useful in day-to-day operation.

While there aren't yet any rumored release dates for the iPhone 8 this is one thing that's easy to predict, as Apple tends to stick to a similar schedule each year.

In fact, with the exception of the iPhone SE, every Apple handset since the iPhone 5 in 2012 has been launched in September. There's no reason to think that will change for the iPhone 8, so expect to see it in September 2017.

We can even get more specific than that, as Apple held its iPhone 7 event on September 7, while the events for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6 were both on September 9 of their respective launch years.

Even going further back you'll see similar dates, so again it's likely that Apple will stick to this sort of schedule for the iPhone 8.

Of course that's not when you'll be able to buy the iPhone 8/iPhone 7S, but Apple typically makes its phones available one to two weeks after announcing them, so you should be able to have the iPhone 8 in your hands before the end of September 2017.

Rumours say Apple is testing at least 10 prototypes for its 10th anniversary edition smartphone, and one of them apparently folds!

Apple's iPhone 8 will be its 10th anniversary iPhone - so, expect big things, naturally. It was on June 29, 2007, that the legendary Steve Jobs presented the first iPhone to the world.

And while Apple has since moved the annual iPhone launch month to September, there is no doubt in anyone's mind that Tim Cook would want Apple's latest iPhone to blow everyone's mind off.

The Cupertino-based tech giant is known to be secretive about its upcoming devices, and it'll surely be extra cautious about its anniversary edition iPhone.

But social media is a great grapevine peddler, and things can only remain so much under wraps when it comes to Apple and its iPhone.

Rumour has it that Apple is testing no less than 10 prototypes for the 10th anniversary edition - so anything that we know (or we think we know) may not see the light of the day, at least with iPhone 8.

That said, here's what we know so far - or we think we know so far:

Radical redesign
According to MacRumours, "Apple has a major iPhone redesign planned for 2017, with a glass body and edge-to-edge OLED display that includes an integrated Touch ID fingerprint sensor and front-facing camera." The new iPhone, it speculates, may be sold alongside upgraded (but standard) 4.7- and 5.5-inch iPhones.

More importantly, the iPhone 8 may do away with Apple's iconic Home button. And, this gets interesting, Apple is also considering a flexible OLED display. Will that mean an iPhone you can fold and put in your pocket? Well, we think not, but. we might get a curved display if we're lucky. Or even one similar to Samsung's 'edge' display.

Apple is also prototyping an all-glass design. No bezels. All display. And guess who's helping Apple build such a display? Samsung!

Stronger inside
In its belly, the iPhone 8 will host the 10-nanometer A11 chip that will help enable "long-range wireless charging", allowing the device to charge via a charger kept up to 15ft away. Nifty.

The same A11 will also be able to deal with an iris scanner in the iPhone 8. Apple is also rumoured to be unveiling the 10.3 Theater Mode iOS within the first couple of weeks this year - and that's an OS exclusive to iPhone 8, or so it's been said.

What about a foldable iPhone 8?
Okay since you're so hung up on the 'foldable' bit, here's some bit of juicy rumour for you. Apple may actually be considering a special variant of the iPhone 8 - codenamed Ferrari - that will "fold" into two separate displays, like with the portable gaming consoles.

It's got a patent on just such a display, says Patently Apple, and we found it extremely interesting.

If this has to happen, then it'll surely befit the 10th anniversary edition, considering that Apple got the patent in 2014 but managed to keep it under wraps until November 2016.

What about the price?
Apple seems to like the price-point it is at right now ($649; Dh2,599 and going all the way up to Dh3,899 for the 256GB 7 Plus model) although the 'Ferrari' is likely to set you back by much more.
