These ideas go with the Come Follow Me March Lesson: What does it mean to have faith in Jesus Christ?

When studying for this lesson I felt like going in the direction of being "Mothers of Faith".

For my attention getter, I printed off several pictures of women in the scriptures: Eve, Esther, Ruth, Abish, Hannah, Mary (Jesus' Mother), Elizabeth, Mary & Martha, Mary Magdalene, Mothers of the 2,000 stripling warriors, Rebekah, etc...

I taped these pictures to the back of my YW. And we played a game kind of like "Headbands" but on our backs. Girls had to walk around asking Yes or No questions to try to figure out who was on their back.

Once they figured it out, I had them think how that women was a Woman of Faith.

I told them we were going to talk about one of the pictures- the mothers of the 2,000 stripling warriors.

We then did Faith #2 in class talking about Mothers of Faith and reading the scriptures in the value experience and Family Proclamation.

We then made a list on the chalkboard and discussed traits that a Mother of Faith has.

We then watched 2 videos:

VIDEO #1:

First Video is from this VHS called "Set the Table". It's about a family that is very poor. A young girl is cleaning old pictures. The mother tells her daughter to set the table for dinner. The girl replies "Why, we don't have any food in the house?" The mother proceeded to tell her that they needed the have faith that the Lord would provide. So, the girl reluctantly set the table. Then, when she was done setting the table, she went back to cleaning the old pictures. She found money hidden in the back of an old picture. It was enough money to provide food for the family for a whole week.

(This is a true story from an Ensign issue I think back in 1980s)

VIDEO #2 was the video in the outline: Pure and Simple Faith

We then discussed how these mothers taught their daughters about faith. We then had a discussion of how we can be or prepare to be mothers of faith.

Come Follow Me February: Why do the choices I make matter? Game

This lesson help goes with the "Come Follow Me" lesson for February's "Why do the choices I make matter?" I made a game using the resource materials given in the lesson outline. I divided my class up into teams. Spaces had questions from scriptures, videos, Strength of Youth: Agency & Accountability, or True to the Faith's Agency.

Materials:

I made a game on some white butcher paper I had. I traced a Tupperware to make the spaces. I used a circle punch to punch out different color construction paper for the pieces. I had a foam dice. And then this picture of Christ from the Gospel Art Kit.

To make:

Click to enlarge the photos so you can see what I wrote in the spaces. I just wrote part of scriptures or quotes from Strength of Youth: Agency & Accountability or True the the Faith: Agency. I would let them look up the scripture. Or they could use a For the Strength of Youth or True to the Faith printouts/books.

For the videos I used these 2 videos: "Leave the Party" and "A Choice Generation (highlight)"

The lesson outline suggest this one: No Regrets about a boy choosing btwn seminary and surfing. You could use that video instead of the ones I used. Just make up questions to go in those spaces.

If the students landed on a "video" space we would watch the video and they would have to answer the question. The "Leave the Party" one is longer. So, if they landed on another question about that movie and we already watched it they could remember the detail.

Doesn't matter which path they took. It was their agency or choice. :)

What do I do with the picture?

I had it on the side of the chalkboard with the word "Repent" by it. If the team got the question wrong I sent them to "repent". :) In other words they would lose a turn but start back where they were on the game.

Just have categories: Videos, Scriptures, Strength of Youth, True to the Faith, Make a Choice

Then, using the resources have questions from each of these categories on Agency. "Make a Choice" category you can come up with real life circumstances where they have to make a choice.

Young Women In Excellence: Movie Night!

This was our YWIE last year. I thought it was low key, budget friendly, fun evening for the girls.

We called it "The Divine Daughters Awards"

We filmed a 30 sec clip of all the girls telling/showing us what they did for their project/experience. Then, we set up a "movie" in the Relief Society room. Had a red carpet, movie projector screen, and popcorn bar.

Playschool & Preschool Halloween Activities!

These are some fun Halloween Activities you can do with your kiddos at home or in preschool/playschool:

Frankenstein Feet Monsters:

I pulled one kid one and a time and painted the bottom of their foot green then pressed it onto the paper. I had a bowl ready to wash off their foot. :)

Once it dried I added black hair, eyes, and mouths with a black sharpie.

Then, used a silver sharpie to draw the "nails" on each side of the head.

Then, I wrote their name with "stein" on the end.

Brandonstein..... you get the idea. :)

Halloween Slime:

I LOVE this slime recipe from Skip to My Lou

I've used it for preschool and for my son's ninja turtle birthday party.

I like it because the kids each get their own bag and it's made with liquid starch- not borax.

I had little containers for all my student's to take home the slime they made at school.

Draw a pumpkin face:

I had this as a welcoming activity. Kids drew a pumpkin face on their pumpkin. Used an Expo Marker with the pumpkin in a protective sleeve.

What is Missing? Jack-o-lantern Game:

We played this in circle time.

One kid would step out or close their eyes. We would take off a piece of the jack-o-lantern's face. Kids would open eyes or come back in the room and try to guess what is missing. They loved this game.

Potato Pumpkin Stamps:

These worked ok... I would make sure there isn't too much paint of each plate. Or else it will splatter everywhere. And it's tricky to make the faces in the potato.

Halloween Sticker Sheets:

You can find these cute sticker sheets here at Oriental Trading.

Spider Web Marble Art:

One on my FAVORITE Halloween crafts.

Squirt a little bit of white tempera paint in a paper cup. Drop a marble inside. Then, use a spoon to scoop it out and put it on a tray with black construction paper. Kids like to roll the marble around making a spider web.

Then, I just printed, cut, and glued these spiders on the page.

Or if the kids are older you can make the hand spiders. Where you put paint on both the kids hands. (no thumbs) Then, they press them on the sheet and you can use hole reinforcements or wiggle eyes for the eyes.

Getting to Know You Game~ Scavenger Hunt for YW

"Come Follow Me": September~ Why is it important to be honest?

This post is lesson helps and printable for "Come Follow Me" September's: Why is it important to be honest? This lesson is a combination of several bullets suggested in the lesson outline.

As my attention-getter we played this game:

I let them look at the items in the pan for 1 minute. Then, I covered it up and they had to list as many things they could remember in one minute. HOWEVER, I took a pic of the tray ahead of time with my phone and let one of the YW cheat using the pic. The other girls didn't know this until AFTER they had to try and list the items. After finding out who won by writing the most items, I told them we had a cheater. We talked about why cheating is not fair.

We then filled out this Cause and Effect chart.

They use the Strength of Youth book to write down the 3 things listed that is not honest. Then, we looked up some of the scriptures in the outline that tell the outcome of a dishonest person. I wanted to stress to them that you should be honest not just because you will be "thrust down to hell" but because it's the RIGHT THING TO DO! We talked about how you can't have the companionship of the Holy Ghost if you are dishonest with people. Yes, we talked about repentance too. :)

LYING:

I used this object lesson when talking about lying with friends. I explained how you build up a relationship with a friend. And if you start lying to them then your relationship with crumble. I had a YW pull a cup out from the "foundation" of the friendship. We talked about how it's a lot harder to build a relationship back up after you have been dishonest with them.

CHEATING:

Being a past teacher, unfortunately when I taught Middle School I experienced a LOT of cheating. :( I told the girls how I would just get so frustrated cuz I couldn't trust them that they would keep their eyes on their own paper. I had to make a TEST A and TEST B. Have a different Pop Quiz with each class because kids would take pictures of the quiz and send it to friends in other classes. I told the YW that I would just get so frustrated I wanted to do this to them {showed the above pictures... they thought it was funny}. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THESE PICS HERE. They responded that you should! I said I shouldn't have to! That's the problem! Everyone should have the moral compass inside them to know that it's not ok to cheat.

PERSONAL STORY: I told them the story about how I had a male student who was very popular. The girls all thought he was super cute. He was an athlete. One day he asked me to complete a teacher recommendation form for student council. He had 2 older siblings that had once been on student council so he thought for sure he would be selected. I couldn't check the box that said yes. It was because he was one of my students that would try to cheat during tests. I couldn't recommend him as an example to students when I knew he was dishonest.

PERSONAL STORY: Another time when I was teaching I wanted to express the importance of honesty with my students. So, I took the tests home. Graded them. Put the student's grades in my gradebook, but did NOT write their score on the tests. The next day I told the students that they were going to grade their own test and give me their grades. I was saddened to see how many students were dishonest and gave me a higher grade than I knew they earned. After taking in the grades they said they earned, I told them what I had done. I told them that I had already graded the tests and that the real test was to see who would be honest and give me their actual score. I told them that I knew who the honest ones were and the dishonest students were. I explained that they needed to always be honest because you never know when your honesty would be tested again.

Pres. Monson's story of a colleague that used his toes to turn the pages in a book on the floor to cheat

Sister Dibb's story of the father who was stealing corn and his son told him he forgot to look up

Elder Gay's story of “Son, would you sell your soul for a nickel?”

I showed the video Honesty: You better believe it

Throughout these we discussed the importance of being honest and what choices we should make to ensure we are women of Integrity.

FROZEN Activities~ Unfreeze Anna & Troll Rocks!

Whose house hasn't been hit with the Disney's Frozen epidemic!?

I was invited by Design Dazzle to be a guest Camp Counselor this summer! How exciting! You can find my guest post HERE.

I have two little girls that are OBSESSED with Frozen. Well, isn't everyone? :) Of course we had to have a Frozen Birthday party this summer and these are a few of the activities we did and the kids loved it! {You can check out some of the other activities we did on this post}

Unfreeze Anna!

Kids will love trying to save Anna by thawing her "Frozen Heart".

Supplies: Anna Cutout, Plastic Cups {I used 16 oz}, Paper Clips, Water, and Access to a freezer.

You can laminate the Anna cutouts or you can use packing tape to "laminate" them yourself. Put a paper clip on the bottom to weigh Anna down. Fill the cup with water then place in the freezer overnight.

Tomorrow Anna will be frozen solid and will need to be rescued by your little ones! I turn on the faucet and run a little water over the ice so it will come out of the cup easier. After briefly running the water over the ice, I just hit the cup face down on the table, floor, etc... and the block of ice comes right out! Kids can use warm water in spray bottles or blow dryers to try to set Anna free!

TROLL ROCKS:

This is a fun little craft for your kids this summer! A Troll Rock!

These are the materials you will need: Sheet Moss {I got mine for about $3.50 at Walmart}, Jewels, Grey Felt, Grey Pom Poms, Rocks, Black and White Tempera Paint, Google Eyes, Sharpie, Q-tip, and Glue {you can use kid friendly Tacky Glue or help them with a hot glue gun}

The kids paint their rock grey by mixing the black and white tempera paint. Let it dry. {this won't take that long}

I would make the face first so you make sure there is enough room. If you do the moss first then you may not leave enough room for the face. To make the ears, you cut out a U shape out of the felt and hot glue it to the rock. Make sure to pinch in the middle! After you add the moss on the bottom all around, make sure to use some for the Troll's hair.

Next, add some jewels. Then, add the troll's smile by using a Sharpie and Q-tip with white paint to make the teeth

Such cute little Trolls! I think I'm going to keep you! ;) {name that movie!} These would be fun to do on just a "boring" summer day or at a Frozen Birthday Party!

July~ What does it mean to take upon myself the name of Jesus Christ?

Before the lesson I plan to put one of these "name tags" on all the YW's shirts.

At the beginning of my lesson I was going to show a picture of my Great Grandmother Lucelle Eliza Taylor. My middle name is Lucelle because I was named after her. I will share with them a little history about her- she served on the General Primary Board. Her husband was Vice President of BYU working along side President Wilkinson. She was a magnificent woman who had served a lot in the church.

Then, I will share the first 3 paragraphs of Elder Arnold's talk: What Have You Done with My Name?

I will then explain the name tags as we read D&C 20:37, 77

I will explain that when we made a covenant with God that we are willing to take upon us the name of Christ, it is like we are willing to wear his "name tag" with us always.

We will then do this bullet from the Come Follow Me lesson:

Read as a class the last two paragraphs of the talk ("What Have You Done with My Name?"), and invite the young women discuss how they will apply Elder Arnold’s challenge.

I added a little applying the scriptures part you can choose whether to use or not. :)

It's using the story of Abinadi as an example of how we should always stand as a witness of Christ because you never know who is watching or will be effected by your testimony or actions.

I encouraged the girls to wear their "Jesus Christ" name tag the entire day. Then I posted a "selfie" :) on Instagram pointing to my Jesus Christ sticker. In the description I said "Who is still wearing it? Mosiah 18:9 {YW Theme} #standingasawitness #YWtheme #YWlessontoday. I then tagged all my YW peeps and told them to post a picture and tag their YW classmates. :)

Playschool~ Teddy Bear Picnic!

Snack:

B is for Bear

Ingredients: Bagel, Peanut Butter, Ritz crackers, and Chocolate Chips.

We ate these with our teddy bears on a picnic blanket.

Math:

Using our counting bears, the kids put a bear on each circle I had on the page. Then, they would touch the bears' head as we would count aloud. Helps with one to one correspondence

We completed this Teddy Bear Exploration Page about our bears and used cubes to measure it's height. Click on the link to find the FREE printable.

Gummy Bear sorting and graphing. I found these worksheets HERE. But, you have to download the picture and put it in word. So you can download my graphing page HERE.

Reading & Craft:

We read "Corduroy" by Don Freeman

I printed the bear HERE and had the kids do marble art with brown paint.

I cut out these green overalls and had them glue a button, eyes, and nose on their Corduroy.

3-Digit Subtraction Or Addition Practice!

This activity is great for hands on practice for 2nd and 3rd graders struggling with 3 digit subtraction or addition w/ regrouping!

I split my "class" into 2 groups. 2 students vs. 2 students. They rolled their set of dice. Set up their problem. I had to check (at the beginning- they ended up catching on) before they subtracted to ensure the larger number was on top- to avoid any negative numbers. :) The groups would find the difference (or sum depending on what you are practicing). Whichever group had the largest answer won the round! I loved watching the teams catch on to put the biggest number on top and the lowest possible number on the bottom so they can get the largest possible difference. So fun to see the light bulb go off in their little minds. :)

Distributive Property Hands On Activity

Great hands on activity for 6th - 8th graders struggling or just learning the Distributive Property. I like to tell my students that a fun way to remember Distributive Property is that the parenthesis are like a bowl and the term in front is going to be "double dipped" (or "triple dipped" depending on how many terms are inside the parenthesis) into the bowl. I always have them circle the term in front including the sign so it's easier for them to remember it when distributing.

Materials Needed:

Half Sheet of Paper (write boxes and parenthesis as pictured)

3 dice (I put in one red one for the older kids to represent a negative number)

Whiteboard or paper and pencil

Students roll the dice and place the dice in the boxes

(if they are using a red dice for negative numbers, then just put it in either of the first 2 boxes)

Students write the problem formed when the roll the dice and solve!

My summer class of 7th graders wanted to make a competition of it. So, we set a timer to see who could solve the most distributive property problems correctly the fastest. It was funny to watch them catch on that when they rolled a 1 they would put it in the first box so they didn't have to distribute or "double dip" like I call it. :)

Frozen Birthday Party!

I think every child (and parent) knows the lyrics to "Let It Go"!

The Frozen epidemic has hit our house too!

My daughter turning 3 wanted a Frozen Party and this is what I put together:

CAKE:

Since it's pretty much impossible to buy an Elsa or Anna doll right now without dropping some serious cash. My first choice for a cake was out since it was an Elsa with a cake dress. There isn't a Wilton cake pan for Frozen yet either- so that was out. Then, I found this tutorial on YouTube: Olaf Cake.

In case you didn't recognize it, this is from Olaf's song "In Summer".

Thought it was simple enough so I gave it a go. Didn't have time for all the fancy extras but I thought it turned out great! {Seriously, I probably only spend like 30-45 mins on decorating. Most of the time was unwrapping all those Kit Kats} Little tip: It's easier to manipulate the gum paste when you rub a little vegetable shortening on it.

Materials:

Cake Mix

Your fav buttercream frosting (and blue food coloring)

Kit Kats

Gum Paste

Pretzels

Orange Starburst (for nose)

Candy Eyes

GAMES:

~SNOWDOUGH~

My welcoming activity for kids to do {since they always show up at different times} was playing with snowdough. Seriously this is HANDS DOWN the best playdoh recipe. Stays soft forever!

~PIN THE NOSE ON OLAF~

This idea is ALL over Pinterest. Before you nix this idea cuz you "can't draw" then check out my Etsy shop cuz I will draw it for you. :)

~ SNOWBALL FIGHT WITH MARSHMALLOW~

I drew Marshmallow on a shower curtain.

Then, you can make these soft "snowballs" out of white pantyhose and polyfil.

Again, you can purchase Marshmallow and the snowballs in my Etsy shop if you don't want to make it yourself.

You can play this game a couple ways:
1) You have the kids stand on a line a distance from Marshmallow and have them try to hit him with a snowball (like Anna did in Frozen)

2) You display it in the room you will have the snowball fight. I put down a masking tape line in the middle of the room. I divided the kids into teams. Set the timer and said "Go!". When the time is up you see which side of the room has less snowballs, that is your winning team!

This was the funnest game!

Then, I had Elsa and Anna come for a visit.

~SOME FOOD LABELS~

May~ Why is it important to study the scriptures?

These handouts go along with the lesson from May "Why is it important to study the scriptures?"

This printable goes along with this part of the lesson:

Ask each young woman to read one of the scriptures suggested in this outline. Ask her to draw a picture that represents what her scripture teaches, and invite the rest of the class to guess what the scripture says about the importance of scripture study. What experiences can the young women share in which they have seen the importance of scripture study in their own lives?

I was going to have the girls draw a scripture out of a hat and then they have to illustrate the scripture on on page of their Come Follow Me INB and tell about it on the other page.

Then, I will partner them up with someone. They will show their partner their illustration. (see below) and will have their page with their description facing them without their partner seeing.

Their partner will have to try and guess what the scripture is saying by looking at the picture.

Then, I will have the girls write a question they may have on a piece of paper. For example: How do I know when I have been forgiven?, How do I know I am a Daughter of God?, How do I know Heavenly Father answers prayers? etc....

Girls will crumble them up into a ball and throw it into the center of the class. Like "snowballs". The girls when then pic up a "snowball'/someone else's question. They will write the question on this handout below. Then, they will find scriptures to answer that YW's question.

While the girls are looking for scriptures, I will post the questions on the board. Then, when the girl's have a scripture(s) to answer the question they will post it on the board next to the question.

Girls can write the questions and scripture references for all the girls (from the board) in the grid below to use for future reference.

I was assigned to give the Easter Lesson this past Sunday. It was one of those lessons that really didn't fall together until the last minute (sorry!). But, I wanted to share it with you because it was one of the most spiritual lessons I've taught. And like one of the other YW leaders said to me afterwards "It wasn't that you taught it, it was such a powerful lesson because of Him." Which is so true. It was really the power of the Spirit that taught the lesson. The message behind the Atonement and what Jesus Christ did for us is so powerful and we needed to be reminded of it often.

So, this is what I did. I found this "silent lesson" idea on Sugardoodle.net. But it was on Pres. Uchtdorf's talk on "Stop It" in regards to judging others. I liked the idea of the silent lesson, but wanted to incorporate the new Because of Him video the church came out with.

What is a "silent lesson"?

It's where everyone is completely quiet. The teacher holds up signs for the students to read. You can incorporate an activity, videos, music, etc...

So here is my silent #BecauseofHim Easter Lesson:

I stood at the front of the classroom and held up these signs watching the girl's faces to make sure they were reading....

I showed this video: Because of Him

I then silently passed out an Easter egg to each girl.

{of course each girl was quietly peeking inside as I passed them out to see if there was anything in it}

Then, I handed out a piece of small paper and pencils.

Gave the girls about 2 mins to fill them out. Once I could tell they were all done, I stood up to hold the next sign.

{I demonstrated sticking the paper inside their Easter egg}

I had Bibles ready on the table in case anyone needed one.

The lesson went by really fast because there was no talking! I'm really glad we sang all 3 verses tho. Some of the girls were crying through it. :) The spirit was so strong among these sweet girls.

We actually still had about 10 mins. left. So I let them bare their testimonies. A lot of the girls shared. It was amazing. I'm so grateful for the power of the Holy Ghost. :)

60 Minute Dinner Rolls!

These rolls are done in 60 minutes. Start to finish. Not even joking! And they are YUMMY! I found the recipe HERE on Dinner Time Ideas Blog. I'm asked to make them all the time for family dinners. Tonight I didn't even start making them until right before my husband was going to put the chicken on the grill! They are fast homemade rolls! Just thought I would share since everyone always asks for the recipe.

Just make sure you don't kill the yeast! Check your yeast packet, bag etc... for right water temp! Mine (from Costco) says btwn 90-110 degrees F. Yes, I always use a little baking thermometer to check my water temp! ;)

Transportation Week!

These are the activities we did that went along with Transportation:

RACE CARS:

Each student got a car and colored it with sharpies.

We then raced them on the race car track! They LOVED this!

RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT!

I used my Yacker Tracker to talk about the different colored light symbols.

We played Red Light, Green Light.

COLOR CARS MUSICAL CHAIRS:

The kids LOVE this! The kids "drive" around using their steering wheel (a paper plate) when the music plays. When the music stops, they run to a chair. Each chair has a different color car on it. I then go around the room asked them to tell me the color car they are sitting in. Great for color practice!

I found these airplanes at Hobby Lobby. Kids used water colors to paint them. We glued them on blue paper with cotton balls for the clouds.

Assign each young woman to read one of the five aspects of repentance that Elder D. Todd Christofferson identifies in his talk “The Divine Gift of Repentance.” What do the young women learn from this talk about how we can know if we have truly repented? What else do they learn about repentance from Elder Christofferson’s message?

I'm going to put the numbers 1-5 on slips of paper and have the YW draw a piece of paper out of the bag. They will then work with that group to fill in the blanks for the repentance aspect from Elder Christofferson. Then, they will write what they learned. Then each group will take a turn sharing with the class what they learned.

Welcoming Activity:

We made cards to give to someone we love because that will make them HAPPY!

Game: We played emotions memory game where you had to match the emotions

Game: I had a :( face on one side of the room and a :) on the other side. I would say things like "You fall off your bike" That makes you sad so they would run to the :( side. I would say "You get a treat". That makes you happy so they would run to the :) side.

We made these. Cute.

"Come Follow Me" November: Why is it important for me to gain an education and develop skills?

We call these "Thinking Maps" in teaching. This is using the Cause & Effect Flow Chart.

I used this with the "Come Follow Me" November Lesson: Why is it important for me to gain an education and develop skills?

I used this bullet from the lesson:

Assign the young women to read individually one of the five paragraphs from the “Education” section of For the Strength of Youth or the statements by President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson at the beginning of the talk “Seek Learning: You Have a Work to Do.” Ask them to explain to the class what they read, and discuss why it is important to work diligently now to gain a good education. Invite the young women to think about and share their goals to gain an education.

We used scriptures from the lesson to discuss what causes us to have an education and what effects we can have because we have an education.

I divided the class into pairs. {we had an even 12 girls today..yay!}

Each pair was given a box. I had drawn the flow chart up on the chalkboard in the classroom. I drew the middle box and arrows. Where the 3 boxes for "causes" and 3 boxes for "effects" are I had a piece of tape ready for the girls to tape up their paper summarizing their assignment scriptures or readings.

Each group was given a blank piece of paper to summarize what "cause" or "effect" they learned from their reading. They then put it up on the board. We went over it as a class and they copied it down on their papers.

The two empty boxes on either side can be used for whatever readings you wanted to use. On the "cause" side I used the quote I pulled from Sister Cook's talk (see page 3 below). On the "effects" side I used the "Education" section from the "For the Strength of Youth" book. (see page 2 below)

As a conclusion I had the girls ponder the questions and write their answers at the bottom on p.3. Just getting them thinking of what type of career they would like to pursue.
