This was baby Timothy’s newborn session, but I couldn’t help myself when it came to this picture of his big brother. Look at those eyes and that smile!

Including parents and siblings in your Atlanta newborn photography session is no problem. Just let me know when you schedule your session and we’ll get those photos out of the way first thing. This allows one parent to take the siblings to grab some lunch or play at the park while I finish up the newborn photos in a quiet, warm studio that helps keep your newborn sleepy and relaxed. It also allows you more time to get comfortable with me before I begin handling your newborn to pose them for their photos.

I typically schedule Atlanta newborn photographer sessions for weekday mornings between 10 am and 1 pm. If you’re wondering how we get the traditional sleeping, curled up newborn photos, I do have a few tips that will help.

First, try keeping baby awake for a couple of hours prior to the session. The longer you keep them awake, the more tired they’ll be when it’s time for the session. This means they’ll fall asleep and be more likely to stay asleep, making it easier to pose them.

You can also feed them and change their diaper right before the session. The combo of a full belly, clean diaper, and being tired is a perfect storm to ensure your little one drifts right off.

And if they don’t? That’s okay! If your baby decides that picture day means they should be awake and alert, we can make that work too. Trust me, you’ll still get incredible photos that you’ll always cherish.

Most newborn sessions take around 2-3 hours as we move on baby’s schedule rather than our own. If your little one needs a diaper change, a feeding, or just a few snuggles from Mom or Dad, that’s okay. We’ll take a break and allow your baby to settle down again before resuming the session.

You don’t need to bring anything other than the baby and any of their necessities. I’ve got outfits and props that we’ll use, but if you have an outfit or prop that has meaning for you or your family, feel free to bring it. I’ll make sure it gets in the photos.

Props and what to wear…

You are always welcome to bring clothing items for your baby. I do keep a several outfits on hand, ranging from newborn-18 months for parents to check out. I also have several props in my studio as well. Props are so great for adding character, and for supporting babies that aren’t quite sitting up fully on their own.

What is a milestone session?

A milestone session is exactly what it sounds like: a photo session meant to capture a milestone in your baby’s life. It might be a specific age, such as 6 months or a year old. Or it might be a particular milestone, such as sitting up, crawling, or walking.

Milestone sessions are typically baby-only and take about 30-45 minutes. I schedule studio milestone sessions between 10 am and 1 pm on weekdays.

If you’re scheduling based on age, you can simply book your session when you’re ready. If you’re scheduling based on a particular milestone, let me know what milestone it is and we can work together to schedule your session at just the right time.

Babies grow and change so fast. As an Atlanta newborn photographer, during the pandemic, I had to consider how to capture these precious memories while protecting everyone’s health. The solution? Taking the session outside! Meet Leni! This little cutie was born at the height of the pandemic. She was also my first outdoor newborn session. I was really nervous, but ended up loving how her images turned out.

Fortunately, the weather was warm and sunny. It was perfect for taking this little beauty’s photos. Leni was one of those babies who was both awake and asleep for her session. This allowed me to get some photos of her beautiful, big blue eyes as well as some of the more traditional sleepy newborn photos.

How to Prepare for your Atlanta newborn photographer session..

Prior to every newborn session, I email parents a “parent prep guide”. The guide offers very simple tips to help you baby arrive sleepy. Not all babies sleep the entire session. I love getting a variety of asleep an awake photos.

I swaddled Leni while she was awake and while she was asleep. As you can see, both turned out beautifully. And the lush green grass provides a beautiful, vibrant background that doesn’t take any attention away from sweet little Leni.

Bringing this little wire frame bed outdoors and adding a floral wreath crown to Leni’s head made her look even more like the beautifully sleeping angel she was.

Newborn sessions can include parents and siblings if you like. If you want to include siblings, I do them first so that one parent can take the siblings to a nearby park or somewhere else to hang out while we finish up your newborn’s photos. This helps to ensure a quiet, soothing environment for your little one so I get the best pictures in the shortest amount of time.

As a Marietta Family Photographer, I get to photograph so many adorable kids. Each year, the Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta does a calendar shoot. There were photographers in several different areas of Atlanta helping out this wonderful cause.

How I got involved…

I got involved with the Down Syndrome community when a sweet friend of mine asked me for a photo a few years ago. She wanted just one picture of hers on so she’d have an updated cover photo to World Down Syndrome Day. When she asked me, I only had to think for a split second before saying yes. After talking to her, it occurred to me there might be others who would like updated photos too.

I asked her if she had other friends who might like a new photo too and she did. So I suggested doing World Down Syndrome Day minis. I enjoyed that day so much that I reached out to the local Down Syndrome community and began working with them on different projects and activities here and there. I also host World Down Syndrome Day minis every year, since that year. My kids help now that they’re getting older. I have learned sometimes, children are even better at wrangling smiles than adults are!

It’s seriously the most fun day every single time I work with this group. The parents are amazing. The kids themselves are amazing. The whole thing is just so much fun. It’s an incredible cause for incredible people and I couldn’t be more thrilled and honored to be a part of it.

I just love how beautiful this family is. As a fellow dog owner, I also love that they brought their fur baby along for family photos!

The best time of day for maternity photos is the last hour to hour and a half of daylight. When you schedule your maternity session, we’ll discuss and decide upon the location of the session. The beauty of maternity sessions is that we can get really creative with where and how we do them!

While you do want to wait until your bump is big enough to take the spotlight, you also don’t want to wait until the last week or two of your pregnancy to schedule your session either. As we all know, due dates aren’t guaranteed and the last thing you want is to taint your new mom bliss with regret that you missed your window for maternity photos.

When to schedule your maternity photos

Ideally, we’ll schedule your Atlanta maternity photographer session for around 28 to 36 weeks. My preference is usually closer to the 28-32 week range just to be safe, in case baby decides to arrive early! As an Atlanta maternity photographer, it is one of my favorite things to capture growing families.

Maternity photos are about capturing your baby bump, of course. But it’s also showing the growth of your family, the strength of the bonds between you. So we’ll include children you already have, your partner, and even your pet. After all, whether they realize it or not, everyone in your family is invested in the new life growing inside you.

An Atlanta maternity photography session is usually about 45 minutes to an hour. It’s long enough to get the beautiful photos we’re after, but not so long that your feet or back will start to ache (hopefully!).

Aren’t they just a gorgeous family?

There are lots of traditional poses we can use but I also think it’s important that you and your family’s natural personalities shine through. So feel free to share your own ideas for poses. And don’t worry if you have little ones that get a little mischievous during the session. The photos will provide lots of laughs for you and your family in the years to come.

Simple Wrapped Newborn Session

August had what’s called a simple wrapped newborn session. This means that your newborn stays swaddled during the entire session. No outfit changes and just a few simple props. These sessions tend to be faster and that means they’re also less expensive while still giving you the beautiful newborn photography experience and photos you want. You can view the pricing details for the sessions I offer here.

What is a Swaddled Session?

Swaddling the baby like this accomplishes two purposes:

1. It keeps your newborn feeling comfortable and secure while we’re trying to take the photos, ensuring that every photo is beautiful.
2. It keeps your newborn toasty warm (though the studio is also quite toasty) so that they’ll happily sleep their way through the session.

I should mention that swaddled sessions are for baby only. If you’re interested in parent or sibling images, I offer a full newborn session. The full newborn session offers parent and sibling poses, swaddled and un-swaddled set ups, and a few more images as well.

You can also feed them just before the session and keep them awake for a few hours prior. This helps ensure they’ll be nice and sleepy when it’s time for the session.

While a traditional newborn photography Atlanta session would include parents and siblings, a simple wrapped newborn session does not. This helps the session go more quickly and keep the session more affordable. It’s also perfect if what you’re envisioning is just those adorable photos of your beautifully swaddled and curled up newborn without a bunch of outfits, props, or other extras. The swaddling material and the few props I use help to ensure your baby shines without distractions.

Can we take photos with the newborn?

Siblings and parents are both welcome to be included in newborn photos. In fact, we’ll start with those photos and get them out of the way. This gives you more time to get to know me and feel comfortable before I take over handling the baby for various poses.

Once sibling and parent photos are done, one parent will take the siblings for some park time, lunch, or a special outing. This allows us to have a quiet, relaxing environment for the best possible outcome for baby and the photos.

If you’d like to do parent and/or sibling photos, all you need to do is mention it when you book your newborn photographer Atlanta session.

What’s the best time of day to schedule our newborn photographer Atlanta photo session?

I schedule newborn sessions for mornings from 9:30-12:30. I recommend keeping your newborn awake for a few hours before your session. This helps them to be more sleepy when we do the session. You can also feed them right before the session to help with sleepiness. Generally, as long as you keep your newborn awake for a while, they should be sleepy enough to have a great session.

And even if they’re not sleepy, we can still have a great session. Sometimes wide-awake photos turn out even better than the traditional sleeping newborn ones because they’re so outside the ordinary.

How long does a standard newborn photo session take?

Typically, a standard newborn session with an Atlanta newborn photographer takes about 2-3 hours. We don’t try to get baby to conform to our needs; we work around baby’s needs. So we’ll take lots of breaks for feedings, diaper changes, snuggles, or just because baby woke up and is feeling overwhelmed.

We can also include photos of your newborn with you, the happy parents, or with siblings. We’ll start with these photos so you have a chance to get more comfortable with me before trusting me to pose your precious new little one. After sibling photos are done, one parent will need to take siblings to the park or out for lunch or some other activity to give us time to finish up the rest of the newborn session.

What should we bring?

Parents often wonder what to bring to an Atlanta newborn photograher’s studio for a newborn photo session. The simple answer: the newborn! That’s it!

I have all the props, outfits, etc. that we’ll need. You just need to bring your sweet little bundle and the things they need. Diapers, bottles, and pacifiers are all good ideas. If you have a favorite outfit or other item that has sentimental value that you want included, you’re welcome to bring it and we’ll see how we can work it in.

But pretty much all the things you see in these photos (and any others on the blog!) are items that I have in my studio specifically for these sessions.

We got one wide-awake shot during Aiden’s session. I don’t know about you, but I love the expression on his face!

How to style your photos

When it comes to family photography, it’s not just about capturing Mom, Dad, and the kids. It’s also about getting some photos of the kids together, the kids alone, and even Mom and Dad alone. Everyone in your family has their own unique relationship with each other and by taking photos of a variety of groups within the family, I’m able to capture those special relationships.

Family sessions are held on location at an agreed upon outdoor location. Worried about the weather? Don’t be! If the weather interferes with your session, we’ll reschedule for another time.

I love how Courtney and her family coordinated their outfits without being overly matchy! Coordinating outfits and colors is an important aspect of family photography but you can overdo it and be too similar. If you’re not sure about your outfits or colors, I’m always happy to help you with suggestions.

When you book your Marietta family photographer, it’s important to share some of the vision you have for your family photos. While I can’t guarantee specific poses or looks, knowing what you see in your mind will ensure that I get photos that match the vision you have. Harper’s big brother was just an absolute DOLL! He’s adorable, and so happy (just like Harper with her super-smiley self!) and so loving and attentive to his baby sister.

How soon after birth should we schedule session?

A typical newborn session usually takes place within the first two weeks. This is when new babies are still in their most pliable, content state. We can swaddle them and pose them in so many ways.

But it’s not always possible. If your baby comes a little early or if my schedule is already booked, you may need to wait longer than two weeks. If so, that’s okay. We can usually get good newborn photos up until around four weeks or so.

It’s important, though, to schedule your session before the birth. We don’t schedule the session, we pencil in your due date. This gets you on the books so I’m not overbooked when your little ones arrives. So it’s a good idea to reach out to me 2-3 months before you’re due. Then we can adjust and schedule based on when your baby is actually born.

Is there anything better than a precious photo of siblings cuddling? Especially since we know one day they’ll be fighting and denying they even like each other!
