<description>&lt;p&gt;One of&amp;nbsp;our favorite small Texas towns is Friona.&amp;nbsp;We like Friona, because it is far away from congestion of a big city, yet not too far from Amarillo (a little over an hour), when we need what a bigger town has to offer. Friona is located on Highway 60 and Highway 214, which makes it easy to get to the rest of the state or to New Mexico very easily. One of the things&amp;nbsp;we like about Friona is the low cost of living. Friona has a 25% lower cost of living than the rest of the country. You can find homes for an average price of $88,000 and rent is on the average of $525. The major employers in the Friona area are agriculture and manufacturing. Texas has an 8% unemployment rate and Friona’s is only 4.4%. Job forecasts are good for the area with employment opportunities expected to rise during the next decade. Many of the ranches and farms are family owned and employ the majority of people in the area. While it is over an hour to Amarillo, the commute is easy because of the lack of traffic jams and the wide open highways found in the area.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Though Friona is a small town, there are plenty of&amp;nbsp;things to do in the area. If&amp;nbsp;we want to play a round of golf, we can head over to the Friona Country Club on West 5th and take advantage of the 9 hole regulation course.&amp;nbsp;We can also travel about 30 mile East to the Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Once there, we can explore the natural grasslands and experience Texas like it was in the time of the buffalo. It is fairly remote, but it within driving distance of Amarillo, and several other small communities in the area. Dalhart has around 7,200 residents and the main industry is farming. Dalhart has a 23% lower cost of living than the rest of the country. Home prices average $82,000 and rent will run you around $595. Houses in Dalhart are appreciating by almost 1% per year and the housing market is healthy. Dalhart is considered safe and has good schools. A surprising fact about the small community is the inclusion of a Youth Center offering many activities for children making Dalhart a good place for families.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;If&amp;nbsp;we're in the mood for a round of golf, we can go to the Dalhart Country Club only 2 miles outside of town on Highway 54. If&amp;nbsp;we want more of a thrill, we can spend the day at Red Room Amusement Park on Denver Ave. in the center of town. For a small town, Dalhart has several restaurants&amp;nbsp;we can choose from. If&amp;nbsp;we want steak, we can go to the Bar H Steakhouse on Highway 54. For a home cooked meal the Jasmine Restaurant on Tennessee Ave. is a favorite local spot, or&amp;nbsp;we can get ribs at Hodies Bar B Que on South Highway 87. <description>&lt;p&gt;Claude is a small, rural town about 28 miles East of Amarillo. It has a population of around 1,250, and it is this small town feel and low cost of living that&amp;nbsp;we like about Claude. Claude has a 21% lower cost of living than the rest of the nation and you can find houses on the average of $87,000 and rent is around $550. Claude’s 4.4% unemployment rate is also lower than the national average of 10%. Like much of the rest of the area the oil industry and ranching are the main employers. Claude is an easy commute to Amarillo on Highway 287 since you don’t have to worry about traffic jams. The Crazy Little Cafe is family owned, and you can count on friendly service and cooked to order meals. They are known for their chicken fried steak and homemade salsas, sauces and dressings. The owners, Tracy and Steve, take turns cooking while Tracy’s mother Joan helps out with waiting tables. If&amp;nbsp;we're in the mood for something more exotic, we can be in Amarillo or surrounding towns in just a few minutes, with Claude’s central location in the Panhandle. <description>&lt;p&gt;Borger is a small town of just over 12,000 residents located on Highway 207 about 40 miles Northeast of Amarillo. Borger maintains a small town feel and is considered safe with good schools. One of the things&amp;nbsp;we like about Borger is the cost of living and economy. Houses are less than half of the state average. You can find homes at a median price of $58,000 and apartments average $546. Borger’s economy has been experiencing a resurgence with oil production increasing at the Phillip’s refinery and recent expansion of the facility. Borger has a low unemployment rate (7% as compared to the national average of 10%). Main. It is a family owned restaurant and the recipes all come from Lorene’s kitchen. Lorene’s in Borger claims to be the original home of Chili Rellenos (a mild pepper stuffed with cheese and sometimes meat, dipped in batter and crispy fried served with a green sauce). Lorene Richardson and her family have been serving the Borger area for many years and their Mexican Kitchen is a local favorite for lunch or dinner.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Borger is just a few miles away from Lake Meredith. If&amp;nbsp;we want to spend the day fishing or boating. we can head out on West Wilson to Ranch Road 1319, North of Fritch, and be there in no time. Lake Meredith also has an extensive hunting area and a camping facility for longer stays. Panhandle is an easy commute to Amarillo on Highway 60, and&amp;nbsp;we like the fact you don’t have to worry about traffic jams and can get to Amarillo in less than half an hour. Another thing&amp;nbsp;we like about Panhandle is housing will cost you 20% less than the state average. You can find homes for around $98,000 and apartments around $1100. For more variety, Amarillo is a short drive and has many restaurants to choose from. <description>&lt;p&gt;Dumas, TX is a small town of approximately 15,000 in the Panhandle and is located at intersection of Highway 287 and Highway 87/152. One of the things&amp;nbsp;we like about Dumas is the low cost of housing. The cost of housing is 25% lower than the rest of the state and the cost of living in Dumas is low. You can&amp;nbsp;get a home for an average price of $86,000 and rents average $608. JB Swift is a large meatpacking plant in Dumas, and Valero, an oil refinery, is another major employer. Both employ many of the residents of Dumas and the surrounding area. A new 265 acre business park in Dumas is helping to build the growing economy. Recently the Moore County Airport made major renovations to accommodate larger jets and it is hoped this helps to bring even more business to the area. Amarillo is only 45 miles away, and if you choose to commute you will not have to worry about traffic jams with the wide open highway between Dumas and Amarillo.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;One of the other reasons&amp;nbsp;we like Dumas is the variety of golf courses in the area. There are three golf courses in nearby Pampa, and Dumas has an 18 hole regulation course suitable for beginners and pros. The Pheasant Trails Golf Course is located on Schuman Road and is open to the public. Dumas also has a free RV park&amp;nbsp;on Highway 87 on the West side of town right before the railroad tracks. The RV park fills up quickly, so you need to get there early to find a spot. If you enjoy your stay, you’re encouraged to leave a donation to keep the park free.
