Here’s an overview of how various laws and rulings are transforming the App Store landscape:

Ongoing Regulation Against App Store Policies

  • The Netherlands: On January 14, 2022, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) mandated Apple to address what it considered unreasonable conditions for dating app providers. This directive aimed to create a fairer environment for developers in the Netherlands by mitigating excessive fees and restrictive practices.
  • South Korea: In mid-2022, South Korea enacted significant changes under the Telecommunications Business Act. This regulation requires major app stores, including Apple’s, to permit alternative payment methods. The goal is to reduce Apple’s control over in-app transactions and encourage more competition.
  • United States: On January 16, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court made a landmark ruling in the ongoing legal battle between Epic Games and Apple. The decision underscored the need for more competitive practices in the app marketplace, challenging Apple’s tight control over app distribution and payment processing.
  • European Union: Earlier this year, the European Union intensified its scrutiny of Apple’s practices. Breaking the Monopoly: New Distribution and Payment Options

In response to these regulatory pressures, Apple is adjusting its policies, particularly in the DMA in EU, where developer can access to alternatives options by agreeing to the new Alternative Terms Addendum in App Store Connect. Here’s a look at the new policies:

App Distribution

  • Direct Distribution: Developers can now distribute apps directly from their websites. They to need meet specific notarization requirements to maintain platform security.
  • Alternative App Marketplaces**: Developers can distribute apps through alternative marketplaces.

Alternative Payment Methods

  • Payment Service Providers (PSPs): Developers can integrate alternative payment processors within their apps, allowing users to complete transactions without using Apple’s payment system.
  • Linking Out for Purchases: Developers can direct users to external webpages to complete purchases. These link-outs can include promotions and discounts, especially for EU users.

New Terms for Developers

To utilize these alternative payment options, developers must adhere to several requirements:

  • StoreKit Entitlements: Developers need to use StoreKit External Purchase Entitlement or StoreKit External Purchase Link Entitlement.
  • Fee Structure:
    • Reduced Commission: Developers will pay a reduced commission of 10% (for most developers and subscriptions after the first year) or 17% on digital goods and services.
    • Payment Processing Fee: Using Apple’s payment processing incurs an additional 3% fee. Alternative PSPs or link-outs do not incur extra fees from Apple.
    •  Core Technology Fee (CTF): For apps with over 1 million new installs in a year, a €0.50 fee per additional install applies.

As a result, many indie developers may prefer the simplicity of In-App Purchases (IAP). On the other hand, larger developers with the resources to manage payment operations might be less inclined to switch. The higher overall costs associated with Apple’s fees might outweigh the potential savings from reduced commissions with an alternative payment provider.

Ongoing Regulatory Pressure

On June 24, the European Commission published a preliminary view that Apple’s App Store rules breach the Digital Markets Act. This emphasizes the need for reform and highlights concerns that Apple’s fees and policies are excessively burdensome for facilitating transactions.

Epic has been striving to broaden the distribution of its games beyond the official app stores of smartphone companies. The company is challenging the high commissions on in-app payments and the restriction of downloading applications solely through dedicated app stores.

Additionally, Epic revealed that its games will be withdrawn from the Samsung Galaxy Store in response to Samsung’s decision to block default side-loading—the installation of applications without using its dedicated app store—on Android devices. Epic criticized this move as “anticompetitive.”

In a similar move, Epic announced that its mobile games will be available on AltStore for iOS in the EU. AltStore is a third-party platform that allows side-loading on iOS devices.

Epic Games also mentioned it will announce “support” for at least two additional third-party stores.

Furthermore, the company’s marketplace, the Epic Games Store, will soon be available on Android globally and on iOS in the European Union, though no specific timeline was provided.

In July, Apple approved Epic Games’ marketplace app for iPhones and iPads in Europe, following Epic’s intensification of its dispute with the tech giant.

Such differences may be due to factors like delayed installations, users who download but do not immediately open the app, or variations in tracking methods. Understanding these discrepancies can help refine your acquisition strategies and improve overall engagement metrics.

When evaluating how users interact with your app, engagement metrics are crucial for understanding the depth of user involvement and the overall experience your app provides. Key engagement metrics include DAU/WAU/MAU, Stickiness, Retention Rates, Interval Sessions, and Average Sessions per User.

DAU, WAU, and MAU—Daily Active Users (DAU), Weekly Active Users (WAU), and Monthly Active Users (MAU)—are fundamental engagement metrics that measure the number of unique users interacting with your app over different time frames.

Stickiness is derived from DAU and MAU and measures how often users return to your app. It’s calculated by dividing DAU by MAU, yielding a ratio that reveals the proportion of monthly users who engage with the app daily. A higher stickiness ratio suggests that users find the app valuable and are consistently returning.

Retention Rates—Day 1 (D1), Day 7 (D7), and Day 28 (D28)—track the percentage of users who return to your app after specific time intervals. Day 1 measures how many users come back the day after their initial use, Day 7 looks at user return a week later, and Day 28 assesses user return a month after the first use. These metrics are crucial for understanding how effectively the app retains users over time. While standards can vary by app type and industry, a Day 28 retention rate of around 4% is generally considered acceptable.

Interval Sessions measure the frequency of user sessions within specific time intervals. This metric helps assess how often users engage with the app during defined periods, providing insights into user habits and app stickiness. For instance, if users typically open the app three times a day, it suggests high engagement and frequent use.

Average Sessions per User calculates the average number of sessions each user has over a given time period. This metric helps gauge the overall level of user interaction with the app. For example, if your app has a total of 10,000 sessions and 2,000 users, the average sessions per user would be 5. This indicates how actively users are interacting with the app.

Together, these engagement metrics provide a comprehensive view of how users interact with your app, offering valuable insights into user behavior, satisfaction, and the overall effectiveness of your app’s features and content.

Monetization metrics

When assessing how effectively your app is generating revenue, monetization metrics are key to understanding financial performance and user value. Two crucial monetization metrics are Lifetime Value (LTV), and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU).

Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) calculates the average revenue generated from each user over a specific period, usually a month. It is determined by dividing the total revenue by the number of active users during that period. For instance, if your app generates $30,000 in revenue from 3,000 active users in a month, the ARPU is $10. This metric provides insight into how much revenue each user contributes on average, helping assess pricing strategies and overall financial performance.

Lifetime Value (LTV) represents the total revenue a business anticipates earning from a user throughout their entire engagement with the app. It is a crucial metric for forecasting long-term revenue and assessing the overall profitability of acquiring new users.

A straightforward method to estimate LTV involves multiplying the average daily revenue per user (ARPday) by the average user lifespan (ALS). This approach provides a basic calculation of the revenue expected from a user over their lifetime with the app. For example, if the average daily revenue per user is $1 and the average user lifespan is 180 days, the LTV would be $180.

However, the most accurate method for calculating LTV can vary based on the app’s monetization model. More advanced techniques may incorporate multiple revenue streams, detailed user behavior patterns, and varying retention rates to refine the LTV estimate. The chosen approach should align with the app’s specific revenue dynamics and user engagement trends to ensure a precise forecast.

Back in 2007, Steve Jobs introduced a concept during the launch of the iPhone: the idea of building apps using standard web technologies to enhance accessibility and popularity. Seventeen years later, this vision has evolved into what we now know as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). These applications blend web and mobile experiences, delivering fast and engaging user experiences directly from the browser.

The journey developing the Distilld app

Distilld was born out of a passion for whisky and a desire to create a platform where enthusiasts could discover, share, and appreciate whisky. Unsure whether desktop or mobile would be the more popular approach, I wanted to ensure flexibility. By leveraging PWA technology, we created an app that offers a seamless experience across all devices. Distilld is downloadable on the Google Play Store and the App Store, as well as accessible on the web at distilld.io.

Voedingssupplementenproducent en -leverancier XXL Nutrition, in 2004 opgericht door René van der Zel, speelt met de lancering van een eigen app in op de trend van webwinkels die inzetten op een hechtere klantrelatie. De app is sinds enkele dagen in de app-stores van Apple en Google te vinden en is sindsdien al meer dan 10.000 keer gedownload.

Meer gemak en beloningen

De focus van de app ligt bij lancering vooral op het bieden van extra gebruikersgemak aan vaste klanten. “Klanten kunnen nu bijvoorbeeld veel gemakkelijker opnieuw bestellen. Juist die trouwe klanten wil je namelijk extra gemak bieden”, aldus Robin van den Akker, technical marketeer en product owner bij XXL Nutrition. “De app geeft ons daarnaast de mogelijkheid om exclusieve producten, kortingen en een puntenspaarsysteem aan te bieden.”

Work-outs opslaan en delen met je vrienden

Nog deze zomer wordt de app uitgebreid tot een social medium. Gebruikers kunnen dan hun work-outs opslaan en delen met hun ‘vrienden’ binnen de app. Hetzelfde geldt voor hun voedingsschema’s en supplementenroutine. Niet alleen van vrienden zijn deze schema’s dan zichtbaar, ook BN’ers gaan hun routines delen op de app. Daardoor kunnen gebruikers precies volgen hoe deze bekende Nederlanders het voor elkaar krijgen fit te worden én te blijven. Jordy Holthuijsen, CCO bij XXL Nutrition: “Wij willen meer dan alleen een merk zijn. XXL Nutrition staat voor een gezonde, sportieve lifestyle en met de app bouwen we aan een community, waarin gebruikers elkaar kunnen inspireren en motiveren.”

XXL Nutrition is in Nederland en België marktleider op het gebied van sportvoeding en sportsupplementen. De producten zijn onder meer via de webshop verkrijgbaar, maar XXL Nutrition levert zijn producten ook aan meer dan 1.300 sportscholen, ruim 1000 supermarkten, tankstations, scholen en verzorgings- en ziekenhuizen. Het in Deurne gevestigde bedrijf, opgericht door René van der Zel, laat zijn sportvoeding en supplementen in Europa maken, hoofdzakelijk in Nederland, België en Duitsland. Here at Appril, we celebrate the launch of new apps in the store and shine a light on the brilliant minds who bring these ideas to life. This time, we’re excited to feature the Wasabi team, an indie duo made up of a developer and a designer. Discover the story behind their latest app and how they turned their vision into reality. Read on to learn more!

Line up!

Line Up is one of the latest apps we launched. It’s basically a concert wallet, but as we love music and like cool esthetics, we wanted it to be more than that. We developed an app that should be cool to show in the line to a concert, something you can be proud to show off with.

We start with those basics

And then we progress with what would be useful. For Line Up, we agreed tickets are valuable items and prone to theft and misuse, so we encrypt them in the app. We keep them locally stored on your device and only accessible by your means of security (i.e. a fingerprint, code, etc). When we go to a concert, we have to turn our screen brightness up usually for the tickets to be scanned, so we let the app do that automatically, and it goes back to your prefered settings when you exit the tickets.

That is basically what we try to do for all our apps. We have an idea and we keep thinking what would be useful to us, and it might be useful to others as well. We mix our passions, or interests and a lack we find (or cannot) in the app stores. Some apps are just too expensive, have weird paywalls, annoying ads or just don’t look nice enough. So we develop it ourselves.

Our latest app is just a fun free app (Ready, Set, Start!) to choose your starting player with when playing board games/tabletop games. And from there, new ideas sprout. Can we make something cool for DND players as well? And we consult friends who play and see if we can help them out

The team, we are a family

When I talk about “we” I talk about myself and my husband Rick. I’m a web and digital designer, and my husband is a software dev. A while back our first app idea came from his tattoo artist, who wanted an app to pick and match colors with the available tattoo ink he had. Rick started to dabble in Flutter, and I started to think about mobile design, which is a whole new beast since you have so little room.

After launching the tattoo app, back then called Irezumi, we developed a crochet app, as Nienke was crocheting a lot in the pandemic, and couldn’t find an app she liked. Since then, our active uses for Pocket Crochet have soared to over 50.000. We get loads of feature requests and try to email everyone back. When feature requests are returning or seem practical to us, we try to implement them as well as we can.

Just Can't Get Enough

Up to now, we have developed 12 apps in total. Of course, they aren’t all successful, and some were just fun to build. Some are not online at this moment because they’ve become redundant or replaced, but every one of them made us gain more experience and focus.

As we don’t believe in using ads, we use tiered upgrades for functionality we deem extra. In most cases, the base app remains free.

As with everything, the more experience you gain, the faster you can build and launch, and Rick and I now pretty much have a flow how we approach a new app idea. There’s a sense of magic when we look each other in the eye and decide to build something new.

About the Founders

Helm is created by Pol Piella and Hidde van der Ploeg, two friends who met through the Swift Development community. After giving talks at an iOS conference in Amsterdam, they connected and became good friends. This collaboration combines great performance with a good eye for design and user interface. Helm is their first project done together from start to finish (NowPlaying is another joint effort) and was started because we really believed that App Store Connect deserves a great native macOS experience.

In de app-wereld van 2024 is het, door het steeds complexere landschap, een hele uitdaging om zichtbaarheid te krijgen en gebruikers te werven. Echter, met de groei van TikTok hebben merken nu een krachtig platform tot hun beschikking om hun apps te promoten bij een enorm en betrokken publiek. In dit artikel duiken we dieper in de details van TikTok-adverteren, specifiek gericht op app-promotie. We bieden merken concrete strategieën om hun doelstellingen en objectieven op effectieve wijze te bereiken.

Waarom Zou Je TikTok Inzetten Om Je App Te Laten Groeien?

Hoewel specifieke, actuele statistieken kunnen verschillen, vind je hieronder enkele belangrijke meetgegevens en cijfers met betrekking tot het wereldwijde gebruik van TikTok:

Downloads: TikTok behoord consequent tot de meest gedownloade apps wereldwijd, zowel op iOS- als Android-apparaten. In 2021 passeerde TikTok de grens van 2,6 miljard downloads wereldwijd, waarmee het zich vestigde als een van de populairste social media platforms ter wereld.

Doelgroep bereik: Geïntroduceerd in 2016, is TikTok uitgegroeid tot een van de meest favoriete sociale apps en videoplatformen onder gebruikers wereldwijd. Volgens de laatste cijfers heeft TikTok maar liefst 900 miljoen dagelijkse actieve gebruikers en meer dan 5 miljard maandelijkse actieve gebruikers.

Wereldwijde marktgroei: In januari 2024 waren de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten en Saoedi-Arabië de landen met de hoogste TikTok-penetratie. Met een bereik van meer dan 130% onder de bevolking van 18 jaar en ouder, wil dit zeggen dat veel gebruikers meerdere accounts hebben. In Europese landen gebruikt bijna 40-60% van de digitale bevolking TikTok. Naar schatting zijn er zo’n 134 miljoen maandelijks actieve gebruikers.

User Engagement: TikTok-gebruikers zijn enorm betrokken bij het platform. Ze openen de app gemiddeld 19 keer per dag en besteden er meer dan 50 minuten per dag aan. Deze mate van betrokkenheid is ongekend vergeleken met andere populaire social media platforms en onderstreept TikTok’s vermogen om gebruikers te boeien en terug te laten komen. 

Revenue Growth: TikTok’s inkomsten zijn de laatste jaren flink gestegen, voornamelijk dankzij hun advertentieactiviteiten. In 2020 genereerde TikTok wereldwijd al meer dan $1 miljard aan advertentie-inkomsten. Dit is een enorme toename ten opzichte van voorgaande jaren en onderstreept de groeiende aantrekkingskracht van het platform voor adverteerders.

TikTok-Advertentieformaten Inzetten Voor App-Promotie

Er zijn veel verschillende soorten advertentieformaten die je kunt gebruiken om gebruikers effectief aan te spreken en je doelen te bereiken.

     

      • In-Feed Advertenties: Maak boeiende video’s waarin je de functies, voordelen en use cases van je app laat zien. Door advertenties op TikTok te integreren in de feeds van gebruikers, kun je hun aandacht trekken en hen aanmoedigen om actie te ondernemen met je app.

      • Merkuitdagingen met Hashtag: Zet een merk-hashtagchallenge op touw die gebruikers stimuleert om content te maken gerelateerd aan je app. Of het nu gaat om het demonstreren hoe ze de app gebruiken of het tonen van creatieve manieren om ermee te interacteren, user-generated content kan zorgen voor een buzz en naamsbekendheid rondom je app.

      • Merkeffecten: Ontwikkel op maat gemaakte AR-effecten of filters die gebruikers in hun video’s kunnen gebruiken, met elementen van de branding of functionaliteit van je app. Door interactieve en boeiende features aan te bieden, kun je de naamsbekendheid van je merk vergroten en gebruikers beïnvloeden om je app verder te verkennen.

      • TopView Advertenties Maximaliseer de zichtbaarheid door gebruik te maken van TopView-advertenties. Deze verschijnen als full-screen video’s zodra gebruikers de TikTok-app openen. Adverteerders kunnen verhalen creëren die de waardepropositie van je app benadrukken, waardoor gebruikers worden aangemoedigd om actie te ondernemen en deze te downloaden.

      • Influencer Partnerships: Werk samen met TikTok influencers die aansluiten bij je doelgroep om je app te promoten. Influencers kunnen boeiende content creëren waarin ze jouw app in actie laten zien en hun volgers aanmoedigen deze te bekijken. Dankzij hun geloofwaardigheid en bereik kun je downloads stimuleren.
