Yeah, I sure am. First of all, a late happy new years to you all. Second, I got my Google Voice invite today. I’ve been waiting for like, two months or something, but it was worth it. Anyway, I did the first part of the Android Notepad Tutorial, which is the full-blown, high quality, real coding tutorials.

Media Center Works… FINALLY!

Well, I got my media center to work. It involved switching OS’s AGAIN. Now I’m on Element OS, an alpha-stage derivative of Ubuntu (elementmypc.com). I bought a Wii Remote and Wireless sensor bar (which really just means it’s battery powered) for $60, and ordered a USB extension cable (15 ft), a usb hub (4 ports) and a two-way usb cable, which I plan to use to steam music/videos/photos from my desktop to it as if it were a USB drive (pretty crafty, eh?) The WiiMote works great, and the IR works better on my computer than on the Wii (Sorry, Nintendo, but the hackers have won!). Also, in terms of application development, I have my first basic, one-page unfinished version of my app on my droid. Well, besides the crashing every time I hit a button, It works!

The update finished successfully. The gosh darn index.php got me again, but I sure fixed it! (Oh, how much I hate that blank PHP script… SILENCE ISN’T SO GOLDEN!!!)

Upgrading Wordpress Today

I am going to upgrade Wordpress, upon which this site is based, to version 2.9 TODAY. It requires that I disable all plugins, so the site’s “image” may change dramatically back and forth in the next few hours.

Just letting you know.

Plugin dissablement should start in about 40 minutes, so I thought I’d let you know!

After the upgrade, if there are ANY bugs in the system, comment on my next post!

Some news, mostly sad

Well, let me get the sad out first. My grandpa died this afternoon. The good news is that I got the Droid this weekend. I’m out for winter break starting Saturday, and plan to pick up a tower defense game that I started this spring, and never really worked on. I also plan to play around a bit with the Android SDK, to get a feel for it and look at some sample code. (I learned SadScript completely from the Eclipse (the mmorpg game development framework) main.txt document that essentially holds the engine together. ANYWAY…)

Yup, that covers it, I guess.

PS. If anyone knows how to get Boxee working on Ubuntu (specifically Mythubuntu) 9.10, I’d be extraordinarily grateful.

I don’t really have that much to say, just updating you guys out there.

I’m switching (right now) my linux installation from Linux Mint to Mythubuntu. No, I like Mint, but I decided that I wanted a good HTPC. Boxee was having weird issues running on Mint (I have no idea why) and I had to install plenty of dependencies that seem like they shouldn’t have been unfindable (I got them all off of the Ubuntu Archives). For the record, I DO need to install them on this new installation for Boxee, but I’m assuming it’ll work. If not, well then, maybe I’ll just use MythTV and see how that goes.
I added some ads to the website and one to the RSS feeds. Need Revenue, or at least some recognition of my viewers existing.

Ok, well I guess I’m done.

Seriously.

Linux is in my repertoire, and I’m proud.

Well, before I get to the whole Linux deal, I might as well mention some changes to the website. If you look up, you’ll see a cool image, which I made. There are also minor improvements with the site, and I’m setting up forums (I may decide not to, but you can check them so far at forums.appsonroids.com. OK, now to the headline.

My family recently decided that our old laptop from several years ago, the WinXP era, was ready for demolition. We ordered a replacement laptop from Dell, and at some point I remembered my lifelong goal of owning a Linux machine. I specifically wanted Ubuntu, but a friend showed me Linux Mint, a derivative of Ubuntu with a nicer UI and some improvements like Flash so it works out of the box. I installed it, and my only complaint is the limits of this old laptop’s RAM and CPU. It’s one of those computers that has less than a gig of RAM, and whose CPU doesn’t even work well. But, Linux works better than the XP that was on it. And it looks great, a feat people rarely attribute to many Linux distros. Although I’m not a serious Linux user, at least not yet, and I only know one terminal command, (shutdown -h now), I’m pretty proud of myself. Too bad the web browsing isn’t great, due to the terrible RAM, and I couldn’t post this from it as a result.

Game Maker announced it’s decision on the new logo today. ewwwwwwwwwww….

It’s looks like the smiley face is INSANE. Not to seem like a troll or anything, but I USE GameMaker. I Do NOT want this, this, thing on my desktop. For comparison, my logo submission wasn’t much better, but it was reasonably good…

Site Moved from blog.appsonroids.com to appsonroids.com

I’ve moved the site from the old subdomain to the main domain, added a redirect, and caused it to become a real website, instead of just a blog. The only thing that is really affected by this change besides the site itself (which is set up to redirect anyway) is the RSS feeds. Simply switch your RSS from blog.appsonroids.com/rssurlextensionhere to appsonroids.com/blog/wp-rss2.php

This should change it. You will still get RSS from the old one, but it’ll only give you changes to the home page, which isn’t very useful!
