Mediciones de caudal a 4200 msnm, Andes Centrales

At a place 4200 masl (13 800 ft), in addition to the lack of oxygen, the beauty of the landscape takes off your breath..the video is on our river discharge measurement campaign (using propellers) at the Central Andes (rainy season), a national park where life is threatened by global warming.

Montando elefantes en Tailandia: La canción del elefante en japonés!
Riding elephants in Ayuthaya "The pearl of Siam". It is definetely one of the most beautiful places in Asia. In this clip, the person "driving" the elephant (Thai) sings a song in Japanese!: the song of the Elephant. If you are Japanese, would you help me translating it? Thanks.

Dentro de la Basílica de San Marco, en Venecia

From the Japanese temples, to the historical monuments of Europe, we have seen the most beautiful architectural monuments of our civilization thanks to the enormous support of the Japanese Government, arigatou! (and the journey is not over!). Now we share a video taken inside the Basilica di San Marco, in Venice Italy. Overwhelming beauty!Next

Divertida publicidad y avisos en el metro de Tokyo
To bring you back nice memories: Fun advertising while commuting in Tokyo´s subway. If you do not understand it, is alright; at that time I could not either; anyway the animation was fun to watch.

Fundaciones de estructuras sismo-resistentes

Very short but amazing video, on how new technologies in earthquake engineering have evolved the concept of designing building foundations. To the left you will see a traditional design, with a building that swings together with the shake; to the right, a building where the foundations absorb the shock. Amaaaaaazing technology! A Japanese trademark!

"Rolled-up waterproof sheets are inserted into a soil/cement wall that has been mixed and homogenized with a trencher. The rolls are then unraveled and pulled sideways, to create our vertical seepage control wall. Since this method drastically reduces the number of joints in comparison to previous methods, seepage control performance is greatly enhanced" - Shimizu-Japan (http://

This is one of the latest acquisitions of the GRANDE Project: An advanced 3D Laser scanner. This equipment is an advanced tool for glacier mass balance studies, and similar applications, such as geotechnical studies.  Currently, it is being applied for glaciological studies in the Condoriri and Huayna Potosí glaciers, and has been applied to investigate the mechanisms of the mega-disaster

La compleja respuesta del heterogéneo sistema hidrológico del Parque Sajama, Bolivia.

The Altiplano in Bolivia is an interesting site for research, because of its highly heterogeneous, and poorly understood, hydrological response. In a video I show you a sample of such heterogeneity. This short video shows a small geyser in the Sajama National Park, on the right chain of the Western Cordillera

Ingeniería de sismosAnother sample of the advanced technology used in Japanese buildings (according to my friend, an earthquake engineer, Japanese technology is at the top in the world!!). This is a scale model of an oil damper, used to "articulate" buildings as a countermeasure against earthquakes. The cost? According to the engineers, the installation cost for a skyscraper in Tokyo was

One of the most severe impacts of earthquakes is soil liquefaction. After having watched a program at NatGEO, I remembered I had this short video on a physical model that I recorded during an Engineering Fair in Tohoku, Japan, back in 2006. The small tubes in the model are manholes. Learn, enjoy while watching the experiment, and find out how harmful liquefaction can be.

Welcome to Sendai! from watertohoku on Vimeo.

Una prueba de la cultura japonesa
In this short post, let me share a video on the welcome ceremony held back in 2005 on my arrival to Sendai. I am posting this video as a sample of the event organized by the Japanese Embassy in Bolivia, held last Oct 28th 2011 in La Paz, which brought a lot of memories to all those who have had the chance to visit
