Pond Muck Removal: 3 Methods that Help

Get the Muck Out! 3 helpful methods

Is your pond muck out of control? Is it time for a pond cleaning, but you just can’t figure out how to accomplish it? Often times pond muck and lake sediment are the result of millions of tiny clay particles that are in a “colloidal suspension”. How can you tell if your pond has colloidal clay particle suspension from rain and runoff, or if you have dead organic vegetation built up over years.

Step 1.

Fill a 5 gallon bucket with water from your pond or lake.

Step 2.

Place a cloth (an old t-shirt works well) as a filter over the top of a second 5 gallon bucket.

Step 3.

Pour the cloudy, mucky water from the full bucket onto the cloth covering the empty bucket.

If the water goes through the filter and the cloudiness is filtered out, you may have dead organic vegetation.

Dead vegetation can be reduced by raking and turning up the sediment and “muck” on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. You can also use a beneficial pond bacteria product to speed up the decay of dead weeds, algae and leaves that have built up over the years. Note: beneficial bacterial and aquatic weed killers may counteract each other.)

If the water filters through the cloth and it remains cloudy, leave the water as is for 24 hours. If the water has not cleared and the clay has not settled at that point, you have colloidal suspension. Colloidal clay suspension is made of tiny clay particles, often smaller than bacteria. Due to their low density, they often take a long time to settle to the bottom and can be stirred back up without much agitation. But, the real problem is that these tiny particles have identical ionic charges and repel each other so they continue to bounce off each other and will not settle out of the water column.

Alum is an easy way to solve this problem. Aluminum Sulfate, or Alum, provides an attachment surface for these tiny clay particles causing them to settle to the bottom. Visible results occur in 1 to 2 days.

Please feel free to email me or post questions you may have and I will respond accordingly.

“I ordered the “Clear Pond” and applied as directed…The pond today is its natural clear beautiful aqua. Thank you so much.”

5 Solutions for Eradicating Eurasian Milfoil

Eurasian Milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum)

Many of our customers ask where this invasive weed came from.

Eurasian Milfoil originated in Europe and Asia and made its way to the United States a century ago. From the 1940's to the 1970's it grew primarily along the east coast. Over the years it has been transported on the backs of animals & water fowl along with hitching a ride on boat propellers and trailers. By the late 1960's and early 1970's, Eurasian Milfoil made its way all the way to the West coast states.

Eurasian Milfoil typically has 12 to 21 leaflets, whereas Northern Milfoil typically has 5 to 9 leaflets. It grows in most areas across the United States.

Problem:

Eurasian Milfoil, once introduced to a body of water, tends to spread very quickly. Only a small fragment of a plant can break off and re-establish its own colony, making it a very invasive lake weed that can be difficult to get under control.

Physical removal of a portion of an infestation can sometimes be worse than doing nothing at all because fragments break off and float to uninhabited areas. One small piece of Eurasian Milfoil introduced to a lake or pond can fully take hold of the majority of the body of water in as little as 2-3 years.

Due to the early season nature of the growth, as well as the speed at which it propagates, the Eurasian Milfoil often crowds out native plants and can create a big problem for recreational water use such as boating, swimming, and fishing.

Solutions:

There are 5 good ways of coping with the Eurasian Milfoil.

1. Physical removal by professional divers

2. Grass eating carp

3. Weevils - a small herbivorous aquatic beetle

4. Harvesting or Dredging - be sure to remove all remnants of the milfoil

5. Aquatic Herbicides - Aquacide Pellets, a slow release tablet with 2,4-D

4 Ways to Get Rid Of Your Algae

The most common lake weed problem is Filamentous Algae. Filamentous Algae, also called “lake moss” or “pond scum”, form dense mats of strands. Filamentous Algae is often a persistent problem because it reproduces rapidly by fragments, spores and cell division. Abundance is dependent on nutrient levels, particularly phosphorous, in the water. High levels of nutrients result in increased amounts of algae.

Its presence can degrade water quality and recreational enjoyment. Excessive algae can cause oxygen depletion when it decomposes, as a result of natural die-off or an algaecide application. This is often the cause of a fish kill, depending on how low oxygen levels get.

4 Control Methods are:

1. Mechanical Control

Pond algae removal can be accomplished by physically lifting large floating clumps with a rake. Mechanical removal is an ongoing activity during the growing season due to the persistent fast growth. Pond algae removal will result in large piles that can be reused for composting or garden mulch.

2. Biological Control

One method of biological control is to fertilize your pond to encourage the development of planktonic algae that will reduce water clarity. Reduced clarity means less sunlight reaching the pond bottom, which in turn reduces growth of filamentous algae.

Another method of biological control is to reduce watershed or outside sources of nutrients. Algae get their nutrients from the water, so minimizing nutrient levels is a worthwhile management activity. Common sources of unwanted nutrients are Canadian geese, lawn fertilizer, domesticated animals, agricultural fertilizer, and even septic systems if located too close to a pond. Pond muck can be reduced with a natural bacteriaapplied weekly.

3. Chemical Control

a) Selecting a chemical to control Filamentous Algae is situation-specific and the pond owner needs to consider several factors. For a list of optional control methods call Aquacide Company 800-328-9350.

b) Applying the correct amount of chemical is crucial to successfully controlling algae. All product labels provide dosage or application rates, often as pounds or gallons per acre-foot of water. To confirm application rate call us directly.

c)Timing of chemical applications is another important consideration. Some algae species can reach nuisance levels in cold water just after ice-out. However, many work best in water warmer than 60 degrees F, and use in colder water will yield less than desired results.

4. Inert Dyes

Inert dyes can be used to control Filamentous Algae. The color they turn the water, usually blue, reduces sunlight penetration, which in turn reduces growth of algae. These dyes are not effective in water less than 2 feet deep. Inert dyes are not recommended for use in ponds with considerable water exchange during a rain.

How to Get Rid of Lake Weeds

It is common for all lakes and pond to have a few weeds and algae. These organic materials are even beneficial for the fish and the aquatic ecosystem up to an extent. For instance, fish can feed on the organic material including aquatic weed. But it is important to keep the weed/algae population in control so that it does not limit sunrays or uses up all the dissolved oxygen of the lake. For better weed and aquatic algae control, it is also important to have a proactive approach. Once the population of these undesired species is firmly established, they may not be removed easily. For instance, cattail is an aquatic weed which may grow even when the old ones are cut. Algae may cloud the entire water body when its population is not controlled and be a cause of oxygen deprivation.

Controlling the Lake Weeds

Algae occur in 8 different phyla including green algae (Chlorophyta), blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), golden alga, red algae (Rhodophyta) and brown algae. The two forms of algae may include the string and filamentous forms. Weed control for lakes and ponds may require regular testing, The below-given methods for algae control can be used when the population goes out of hand.

Pond Dyes and Shading

You can use the pond dyes or shade your pond through other ways so that the sunlight does not reach it. Such shading will be detrimental to the growth of algae and their population will decrease. But remember that the use of dyes may also impact the growth of other plants of the lakes.

UV Clarification

The UV clarifiers disperse the UV light that can destroy aquatic weeds. You may use the clarifiers, but not at a gigantic scale and these tools will be inefficient for large lakes. The UV clarifiers do not harm the life of microorganisms wildlife and fish.

Manual Removal

Many algae including Chara and other spring allergies resemble the common plants and hence can be removed by vacuuming, raking, hand pulling, or cutting. you can also drain your pond completely and fill it with fresh water so that it is clean and free of all the weeds and algae.

Algae Herbicides

Certain microbes can break down the algae, are available commercially, and are used for weed control for lakes. You can also use the more popular algae herbicides like Cutrine Plus and Copper Sulphate. Remember that while using the herbicides only half of the lake should be treated at a time, and the dosage of the herbicide should also be correct (as specified in the label of the herbicide).

Emergent Weed Control

Emergent weeds may not be entirely terrestrial or aquatic but may grow in a few inches of water. Loosestrife and cattail are some examples. When they occur as dene colonies, methods including pulling and seasonal cutting may be required. For these weeds, you can use herbicides like Glyphosate and other herbicides that are applied directly to the weed.

Floating Weed Control

Floating weeds include hyacinth, duckweed, lilies, and others are seldom found in deep waters and mostly occur in the shallow lake water. Weeds including lilies have rhizomes, and therefore are to be cut for removal. You can also use herbicides for removing them. The smaller weeds including duckweed can be vacuumed or raked as well. Aeration will promote water movement, and not allow floating weeds to establish.

Submerged Weeds

The upper portion of a submerged weed may float on the surface, while its major part is located beneath the pond water. Water milfoil, hydrilla, and bladderwort are some common submerged weeds. Because these weeds have very soft stems, they can be removed easily by manual methods (including skimming, cutting, raking and pulling). You can also use the herbicides like Sonar to treat the submerged weeds.

The method to choose for controlling with population will depend on the size of the lake, your own location, weed species and the ecological system. Remember to consult an expert lake management service to get the best results.

Duckweeds (water lenses) rank among the smallest plants in nature. The tiny green leaf is also called as “frond” and may be mistaken for algae. Excessive population growth of all the weed will reduce the oxygen level in a pond and can kill the fish and good algae. These plants fall under the family Lemnoideae. Duckweed is devoid of leaves and stems and has a very simple structure. Its population makes grow fast when there are a lot of nutrients present in the pond water. If there is organic matter available at the bottom of the plant in the form of plant matter and leaves buildup), the material decomposes and forms the nutrients. Agricultural runoff, availability of fertilizers, visiting animals and birds, leaking tanks and other similar conditions will promote the growth of duckweed population. When you want to control the infestation and check the growing population of duckweed in a pond, here are some useful methods available.

Aeration

Aeration will keep the pond water in motion and therefore duckweed population will not be able to establish itself and grow further. It is a cheap method for duckweed control.

Reducing the Availability of Nutrients in Water

Duckweeds, like all other plants, require nutrients to grow. Excessive nutrients may be available in pond water, which will facilitate the weed population. You can fence the pond area by trees or plantation so that the runoff biological material and fertilizers do not come to pond water. Chemicals like Alum can be used to the balanced composition and restore the quality of pond water as well. Livestock and animals should not be allowed to visit the pond.

Manual Methods of Duckweed Control

Because accumulated leaves will decompose and form nutrients for weed growth, you should prevent them from entering into the pond. A good amount of leaves may fall on the pond during the autumn. Hence you need to use the netting or any other kind of method or material to avoid leaf accumulation. Duckweed can also be removed manually. Start your effort on a windy day when the weed gets accumulated on the sides and edges of the pond. You can use the swimming pool nets for the purpose. Manual methods (including skimming and raking) will also reduce the duckweed population.

Biological Control

Fish like goldfish and grass carp are natural predators that will feed on the duckweed population and reduce it at a fast rate. This method can be a great preventive way for duckweed control and can be used when the population is at a low level.

Chemical Control

Chemicals should only be used as the last resort when you want to control the weed population. Some of the most popular herbicides used for killing duckweed include Sonar and WipeOut. The herbicides have to be applied one single time and will kill all other weds as well, along with the duckweed. Other herbicides including Ultra Power Weed Defense are broad-spectrum herbicides, which may kill the weed very fast. But you may have to use the herbicide multiple times.

When using chemicals for lake weed control, you should pay attention to the instructions provided on the herbicide pack and label. Do not use the chemicals excessively but only in correct doses for proper duckweed control. Always adopt a proactive approach towards cleaning the weed and undesired algae. The right treatment will depend on the pond size, your location, and other aspects. For the best approach and result, you can approach a leading expert pond management service.

Aquatic Weeds: How to Get Rid of Pond Weeds

There are certain positive sides of having algae and weeds in a pond, as the feeding of fish and filtration among others. But when the population goes beyond limits, the weeds and algae can block the sunlight, consume the available resources and oxygen (thereby causing the death of other plants and animals), deteriorate the beauty of the pond and may also be a cause of other drawbacks as well. Many people and pond owners, and even the government authorities may be disturbed by the weed problem. But because there are various nuances involved, a good aquatic weed control approach would accommodate the different variables.

Preventive Measures

The pond weeds may flourish when they get to grow favorable roots in the soil. You can prevent the problem by creating the steeper banks on the pond’s edge. This way the plants will not be able to hold roots. But the measure will not prevent the growth of floating plants and algae.

The weed and algae population may also proliferate when the nutrients get flooded into the pond from the surrounding soil (for instance inflow of the fertilizers). You can plant trees or natural plants (for a certain feet distance) between the pond and the fertilized land, thereby creating a buffer zone. This way the nutrients from surrounding soil will not enter into the pond. Animal waste, animal feed, and livestock should also be kept away from the pond. For attaining the objective you can create a fence or use other measures. Also, remember that you should act fast whenever you witness a significant weed issue.

Weed Removal

The best pond management service providers and professionals will carry an onsite evaluation to identify the problematic species, for proper aquatic weed control. Identification ensures that time and resources are not wasted and specific measures are adapted for controlling the weed population. The identification may involve the use of stereoscopes, dichotomous keys, and lab tests.

Henceforth, the employed method of weed removal depends on the kind of weed and the extent of population growth. Nutrient management and remediation products including Biochar and Alum restore the balanced composition of the pond and improve water quality. Biological control methods include the use of triploid grass carp fish that have a great appetite for a range of aquatic plants. In certain situation, dredging hydro raking, and other methods of extensive sedimentation and vegetation removal may be required.

Use of Herbicides

A herbicide should be chosen carefully in lieu of the targeted weed. Herbicides nowadays come in many different forms, including granules, sprays, liquids, and solid forms. When you have to control the population of algae, you may require the copper chelates and the copper sulfates. For the submerged plants (including the free-floating plants like duckweed) Fluridone or Diquat may be required.

There are also “reduced risk” aquatic herbicides available (including Procella COR) that will target only the target species. It is important to choose a herbicide to target a given and specific population, and you may need to hire and work with professionals who have proper expertise and resources.

Stake Holder Desires

Different stakeholders will have different goals and desires for their pond health. For instance, a homeowner association’s aspirations may vastly differ from those of an owner of a duck hunting and fishing pond. Therefore, your desires and vision should be properly communicated to the pond management professionals. There may also instances when there might be more than one stakeholder, and in these situations, more careful evaluation of the goals may be required.

What are the Different Ways to Control Duckweed

Also called “water lenses”, duckweeds are flowering aquatic plants species that may float just beneath the surface of water or on it. The plants belong to the family Lemnaceae, has a very simple structure, and are devoid of leaves and stem. Duckweed population spreads very fast and may double itself only in a matter of days. Presence of nutrients in pond water supports the growth of duckweed. It is a source of nutrition for both birds and animals. Waterfowl, duck and herbivorous fish feed on the weed. Duckweed prevents the breeding of mosquitos by not providing to them a surface to breed. The weeds prevent evaporation of water thereby providing for water conservation, and also absorb phosphates and nitrogen to purify water. Duckweed cover also reduces algae growth by shading the plant water body.

But when the duckweeds cover the surface to a greater extent, they deprive the aquatic plants and water animals (including fish) of oxygen. The aesthetics and beauty of the water bodies may also deteriorate because of the weed. Duckweed’s excessive growth also constrains human activities like swimming. These weeds grow in water bodies where high levels of phosphate and nitrogen are found. Therefore, beyond a certain extent, the control of duckweed population becomes a necessity. Here are some methods and tips to control the duckweed population.

Manual Removal

Duckweed is the smallest flowering plant and can be removed through the use of nets. Other methods including floating boom, skimming and raking can also be used. The floating boom method involves the sweeping of pond water. The refuse should be put far away from the pond, as animals and human activity may bring it back to the pond. Duckweed is good biomass to be used in compost.

Use of Herbicides

Duckweed can also be killed and removed by the use of herbicides. Products like Fluridone and Diquat can be used for duckweed control. These products should always be used in right concentrations, and according to the instructions, warning, and alerts provided on their pack labels. You may also add chelated copper to enhance the effectiveness of the herbicides towards killing duckweed.

Surface Agitation through Aeration

Aeration devices, including the bubble aeration device, can be used for duckweed control. Aeration will cause agitation of the water, which will result in deterioration of duckweed population. Duckweed prefers still water for its growth.

Reducing Nutrients

Duckweed also requires nutrients to grow in pond water, just like other aquatic plants. You can create a buffer zone in between the livestock/garden areas and the pond so that nutrients sources including fertilizers, animal waste and manure do not reach to the pond. In the absence of nutrients, the duckweed population will cease to exist.

Blocking Sunlight

Sunlight is necessary for the process of photosynthesis. Duckweed population can be controlled by shading the pond regions, so that sunlight does not reach the pond waters. Shading should be put the pond’s southern side and region, so that maximum amount of it can be blocked.

Always choose the chemical methods of duckweed control at a later stage. At the start, settle with the biological and manual methods, which are not bad for the environment, and are also more affordable. You may also consult an expert herbicide product company and the professionals will provide to you the best, sustainable and environmentally friendly options available. Duckweed can be good for your pond if their population is controlled. Therefore keep monitoring your pond so that you can take early preventive steps.

How to Remove Lake Weeds and Maintain a Beautiful Pond

The growth of algae and weed among other and desirable plant vegetation is common in the ponds having stationary water. When this happens, the pond water starts to resemble green pea soup. The weeds and algae consume the nutrients and oxygen of the pond and deprive the fish/aquatic animals of the vitals thereby killing them. Thick vegetation is also detrimental for human activities including swimming and boating among others. The foul and stale smell is another drawback of the growth of weed and algae. It has been found that when the population of weed covers a pond surface area of greater than 25%, the fish life and reproduction start to get adversely affected. Algae is by far the commonest weed found in still water. Presence of debris may further aggravate the problem.

All of this nuisance and undesired substances, including weed and algae will also deteriorate the looks of your pond. When you cannot see the bottom of the pond because of murky and muddy waters, or when the fish are dying in an abnormal way, it is time to clean the pond. Here are some ways for lake weed removal, and to restore the pond's natural and beautiful looks.

Pond Aeration

You can set up an aeration system through which more oxygen and air can be dissolved in the water of the pond. Addition of oxygen will improve the quality of pond water and will boost the growth of aquatic animals including fish. Aeration will also boost the growth of good bacteria that will breakdown the weed, which disrupts normal life in a pond.

Using Herbicides

Herbicides can also be used for killing the weeds. Different herbicides are used to get rid of different kinds of weeds, and therefore it is important to identify the weed that is affecting your pond. The herbicidal packs come along with all the instructions, warnings and alerts. You should use the aquatic herbicides in accordance with the label instructions only. The herbicides should also be applied exactly at the area where the weed is growing and has a higher concentration.

Benthic Barrier

A benthic barrier consists of a frame with a blanket attached to it and can be used for lake weed removal. It is put at the bottom of the lake to cover it. The barrier does not allow the sun rays to reach to the bottom of the pond, and therefore causes the weed to die. But see to it that the pane is not put into an area where the fish spawn.

Pond Drainage

Sometimes the use of measures including herbicides as well as cleaning may not be enough. Some invasive species like the water hyacinth may not die. These species bounce back even when minutest of remains are there. In these cases, you may have to drain the pond completely. For this, you will have to dig out the different plants and also chop them away. All the refuse should be put into the bag and should be thrown away. If the refuse makes a part of the compost, it should be stored or put away from the pond water

Prevention Of Weed Growth

Prevention is always better than cure. Weeds should not be given any place to grow and therefore monitoring is necessary. The deeper waters also prohibited the growth of weed. Remember that plants and weeds also require nutrients for their growth. A common source of these nutrients can be fertilizers and animal waste. The presence of a buffer zone in between the gardens/livestock area and your pond will not allow the nutrients to dissolve to the pond.

How to Keep Pond Weeds Under Control

Almost all pond owners may encounter the undesired different kinds of all weed that grow in the ponds out of nowhere. A few of the weeds do not cause a problem. But when there growth and population goes out of control, the weeds limit sunlight, which fails to reach the aquatic fauna and flora. The weed also utilizes the pond oxygen so that other species, including fish, become deprived of it. Presence of invasive species and weeds in excessive proportions may render the pond unusable for activities like boating and fishing. Some weeds are more common. For instance, the cattails develop extensive and thick rhizome mats. Even when the older ones are cut and removed, the new ones sprout. Extensive algae growth is also detrimental to aquatic life, as it uses up all the oxygen. Bad algae including cyanobacteria consume all the nutrients.

Pond weeds have a very fast growth rate, and therefore no matter how often they are manually destroyed and pulled away from the pond, they grow back soon. The next growth is also thicker than the earlier one. Some pond owners also resort to the use of herbicides, but these can harm the aquatic animal (like fish), plants, and humans as well. Therefore their use may be banned in many of the states and regions.

Preventing The Growth Of Products

Muck away and pond dye can be used for preventing the growth of weeds in a pond. The Muck Away pond cleaning method is also known by the name Cartaway. Grab lorries/tipper trucks are used by the professional muck away service providers to remove a large number of inert wastes. Pond dyes work well against algae. But these are not algae eradicators and hence should be used during spring, when the plants have not yet started to grow. Pond dyes shade the water and not allow sunlight and UV rays to reach the weeds, thereby preventing their growth.

Eradication Of Weeds

Muck Away and the pond dyes are preventive processes and products and may not be highly effective when the plant population has established itself firmly in the pond. For weed eradication, you may be required to use the weed cutter. These cutters are nowadays offered by the best of brands. A weed cutter may cut the weed at its low point, and the cut weeds can be easily raked away. An ideal weed cutter is double sided and has around 28 inches of length. The cutters are highly effective against the weed population that grows on the pond's edge. They have an ergonomic aluminum handle and are also rust proof. There is also the V-shaped variety of the weed cutter that can clear a path of 4 feet width. The wheat cutters can clear the population of water milfoil and the cattails along with other weeds that are submerged and may not be removed through other methods. You can always choose a good quality weed cutter that will be light in weight, and weigh no more than 8 pounds.

Pond rakes and skimmers are also used for removing the weeds. Apart from clearing the weeds, these tools will also remove the debris which occupies the bottom of a pond. Presence of debris is also detrimental to both the growth of animal and plants, but it does promote the growth of vegetation that is not wanted. The unwanted substances also deteriorate the quality of the water.

A combination of methods may be best for removing the pond weeds and algae. You can talk to a leading pond cleaning products provider to know the best and most affordable options available to you.

Many of us believe in maintaining a natural essence in our surroundings. To bring nature close to us these days many people are constructing artificial ponds in their backyard. In case you are having one at your place and If you have experienced dirt and garbage in your pond, or the fishes in your pond are showing a different behavior, it can be because of the growth of weed in your pond.

Before we go deep into the discussion as how we can get rid of weeds in pond, it’s important to understand what exactly pond weed is.

These are basically typical Bodies found on water and display diverse varieties of plants that also includes weed which remains submerged. You need to discover the weeds which are growing in between the water plants for early treatment. The moment you find that weeds are growing fast and covered almost 25% of your water surface, then that indicates it will start interfering in the reproduction system of fishes. It will also produce some extremely bad smell making it difficult for you to go near the pond. The over growth of weeds which suck up all the oxygen present in the water, leading to death of the fish. Early you take action, better will be the chance to clear of the weeds and save the fishes and water-life of the pond.

There are many ways in which your pond can get weed infestation. Lake Weed is dangerous for the aquatic life and it can also make your aquatic space look ugly. For Lake Weed Removal you can use the following methods and get the beauty of your pond intact. So scroll down and check out:

The best method of Lake Weed Removal is the setting up of aeration system. In this process you can add more oxygen to your pond. It helps in improving the quality of water and offers a healthy living space to your aquatic plants and animals. Bu eliminating the pollution inside the pond, the aeration system improves the quality of life in the pond.

You can also create a natural system in your pond. It contributes to healthy and self-cleaning environment in your pond and it is a natural process of Lake Weed Removal.

Keep a close eye on your pond and take care of the infestation right from the start. Clear the trash, garbage, dead fishes and any other waste from inside your pond.

Using a benthic barrier is another easy thing that you can do to keep your pond free from the lake weed. With this method you can save your pond in a natural way because this is a chemical free method. This is a safe way of preserving life in your pond and you don’t have to harm the aquatic life in this way.

Make sure to choose the herbicide with care. Identify the infestation and select the herbicide accordingly. You should also apply the aquatic herbicide in the areas where the particular infestation breaks out.

Use the filtration method to keep the waste out of the pond. Install the filters and give your aquatic plants and animals a chance to breathe in fresh and clean environment. Filtration can control the lake weed and give a better place for your fishes to live.

Some Facts about Eurasian Watermilfoil

Eurasian Water Milfoil also known as Water MilfOil is one of the most exotic aquatic plants found in Minnesota. This aquatic plant is quite commonly found in the water of Europe, Asia and Northern Africa. It was in the 1940’s when the Eurasian Water Milfoil first came to the parts of North America. The scientific name of this plant is Myriophyllum spicatum and is a native of Asia, Europe, and North Africa.

Commonly found in lakes, ponds and water reservoirs having shallow capacity of water, Eurasian Water Milfoil is also found in rivers and streams where the water flow is quite slow. The plant has a characteristic of growing very fast and it can grow in quite diverse ways and forms. Even if the stem of Water MilfOil gets detached to its body, it has the capacity to start its growth once again. This plan can also produce flowers and seeds that you can see on the surface of the water source. Remaining parts of the plant are underneath the water surface. It has runner roots and it gets its growth spread in water through the roots. Water MilfOil can tolerate cold water and in fact it grows fast in cold water of the lakes of Minnesota during the beginning of spring.

The growth of Eurasian Water Milfoil is very fast and it spreads in a very little time. The growth is so fast that it can block the light in the water source that can help in the growth of the native quatic plants. The aggressive spread of the plant is dangerous for the other species of aquatic plants because its growth can starve the other plants and they cannot grow in such an environment. If it becomes dense the aquatic plants and animals in the water source can be in danger. Fishes can die because of starving and this is a great threat to the aquatic ecosystem. The sunlight finds it’s hard to penetrate through the water because of this profuse growth of the plant on the water body.

The fishes and other organisms inside the water source where aggressive growth of Water MilfOil happens get very less space to swim and sometimes the growth is so large that the fishes can hardly move. It also makes the other aquatic animals uncomfortable. It becomes tough for the organisms to reach their food and they die eventually.

If timely attention is not given to check the growth of this plant on water body then chances are quite high that it will clog the pond completely. Certain section of the ponds will turn inhospitable for the boaters as well as for the swimmers. The worst part is that as on date there is no known method which can eliminate the existence of milfoil completely from the water body. There are some chemical methods which are used for treating this problem but after certain period of time it again grows back. Biological agents are also available to treat the problem but complete eradication is not possible even by it.

All that can be done is to restrict the growth of this plant from time to time. Use of too much chemicals for cleaning are also not good for water species and so same need to be used in restricted amount only.

How to Control Pondweeds

Ponds are known to be important hotspots for maintaining the biodiversity in the ecosystem. Ponds also support varieties of species, and few among them are scarce species, which need to be maintained with care to avoid misbalance in the ecosystem. Besides being the house of aquatic species, ponds are also popular for housing a wonderful terrestrial wildlife. Ponds act as the source of drinking water in the dry weather, and also provide insect as well as plant-based food. Keeping this fact in mind these days many are showing interest in construction of artificial or natural pond close to their habitat to stay close to nature.

Pondweeds are common to see in the ponds and that needs serious attention. If timely removal of the pondweeds is not done it can cause serious issues and lead to foul smell and death of water species existing in the pond. So what exactly are these Pondweeds?

Well, Pondweed belongs to the type Potamogenton and it includes more than 80 species of aquatic plants. It can be of different size and can appear different according to the type of water source where it is fount. To describe pondweed with its appearance is quite tough because of its various features and qualities. There are many of them that are found beneath the water and some of them are partially merged inside the water. They are of many different sizes and they offer as a major source of food to the ecosystem in your pond. Because of its attractive look, it can be an ornamental plant to your pond. It balances the oxygen inside the pond so it is an effective plant, however when it is grown out of control, it can be dangerous to the ecosystem of your pond and it becomes important to take measures for Pondweed Control.

It is possible to practice Pondweed Control. With the methods mentioned here in this article you can control the growth of pondweed. The first thing you should do is prevent outgrowth of pondweed. Using other methodologies is also a solution, however if you can keep the pondweed in control there is nothing as good as this. Keep your pond clean and while you plant pondweed, use planters or containers so that the roots of the pondweed are in control. If you have a small pond you can manually control its growth. However if your pond is large you can do Pondweed Control with the process of releasing grass carp in your pond. The grass carp will feed on the submerged parts of the pondweed and help in controlling its growth.

If you are unable to control it, you should use herbicides. The aquatic herbicides can kill the overgrown pondweed and help you get a healthier ecosystem inside your pond. Make sure to read the instructions and cautions on the label before you use it. Some of the herbicides come with special instructions, so follow the instructions and avoid the toxic herbicides. Use proper measurement while using herbicides and use the one which is apt for your pond.

Hope the above discussion is sufficient enough to give you a view as how you can control pondweeds in your pond. Help of professional experts can be taken to treat the pondweeds in case you find it difficult to it on your own.

5 Ways to Keep Your Pond Water Clean

A pond is a living ecosystem that contains bacteria, plants, fish and other life forms as well. Apart from an algae bloom, unclean water may also be caused by organic and decaying matter, clay, dirt, debris, animal feces, and other contaminants and undesired materials. You would not like your pond water to be unclean as it will also deteriorate the looks of your farm or home and will also harm aquatic life. When you want to have clean pond water and wish that it stays clean, you have a number of natural methods (in the form of biofilters, plants, and barley straw) available. Herbicides, pond cleaning equipment, chemicals, and certain artificial method can also be used for keeping pond water clean. Here are some tips that will help you have a clean water pond that is full of aquatic life when you are looking for an answer to the question “How to clean a pond?”.

Add Beneficial Bacteria

The breakdown of ammonia within the pond causes the formation of nitrites. These nitrites can be consumed by beneficial bacteria. This prevents the growth of harmful algae, which also feed on nitrates that are formed by the nitrites through a conversion process. The beneficial bacteria are sold commercially, and unlike the overdose of algaecides, an overdose of beneficial bacteria is not detrimental to the aquatic life.

Maintain Your Pond Regularly

You can clean your pond manually and on a regular basis to remove the debris and leaves that float on the water surface. A net is one of the cheapest ways to clean the water surface. The pond's bottom also requires cleaning and you need to use the wet vacuum or pond vacuum for cleaning the bottom of the pond.

It is important that the filters of the pond pump are cleaned once every week. All you need to do is to remove the filter, clean it by using a water hose and replace it. The manufacturer instructions should also be followed (if provided). The gauge of the filter should also be cleaned at a pressure of 4 to 5 pounds. Noise coming out of the filter or a leak in the pump are signs that the filter needs cleaning and maintenance.

Check The Fish Feed

Choosing a good quality fish feed will provide for its better digestion and hence lesser wastage residues and droppings will be there in the pond water. If you find that the feed is floating on water, you are probably overusing the feed. Overfeeding may also result in the growth of algae, as the excessive nutrients will be used by algae.

Use Of Organic Methods

When you want a solution to the question “How to clean a pond”, you have some biological options as well. You can use the biological in-pond and the external filters that will remove the organic waste and will provide for cleaner pond water. The external filters can be easily cleaned while the In-pond filters are easy to install. Choose a filter that can filter twice the water your pond contains, which will provide for better efficiency and cleanliness.

Organic materials like Barley straw secrete certain chemicals that do not allow algae to grow, and these can be used as well. You can also grow the aquatic plants (including the submerged or floating variety) that will prevent algae growth and will add some shade to the pond water, which will be liked by the fish as well. Remember that the shaded area should not exceed 50% of the total pond surface area.

Use Of Chemical Methods

Certain chemicals can be used for removing the algae. While they do not harm the snails and fish in most cases, they may be harmful to the tadpoles sometimes. You can also use calcium sulfate, which can break down the sludge accumulated at the bottom of a pond effectively.

Use Of Artificial Methods

Certain artificial methods including a waterfall or a fountain may provide for moving water, which is detrimental for the accumulation and growth of grime and algae. Use of ultraviolet clarifiers for removing and killing the suspended algae is also getting increasingly common nowadays. The pond water can also be changed by up to 30% every week so that clean and pathogen/algae/dirt free water gets added to it each week.

A reputed herbicide company will offer to you more information on the kinds of products and chemicals that can be used for cleaning the pond while not harming the aquatic life.

A customer recently contacted us regarding the control of <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-3" id="gwmw-15534977319055960098459">emersed</gwmw> weeds and grasses before they reach the surface of the water. Below <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-3" id="gwmw-15534977324449619692357">is</gwmw> his question and a response.

Question:

Is there any product that kills <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15534977333409567653582">emersed</gwmw> weeds BEFORE they grow above the water? My objective is to not have anything visually growing above water. So waiting until they grow to apply the herbicide in late season doesn't help accomplish my objective.

Answer:

We do offer pre-emergent aquatic herbicides for treating SOME types of emergent weeds. The Aquacide Pellets will work on growing weeds that have yet to hit the surface of the water. <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15534977370033961732198">Aquacide</gwmw> Pellets work best early season as new weeds begin actively growing. Repeat treatment is normally needed to kill the entire root system. <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15534977380822419514934">Aquacide</gwmw> Pellets are a broadleaf herbicide and will not work for all types.

To confirm what you <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-3" id="gwmw-15534977403130636712628">have growing</gwmw>, Pull a sample, spread it out on a paper towel, include a recognizable coin, take a close-up photo and email it to us at; Weeds@KillLakeWeeds.com or put the sample in a zip-lock <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15534977403137740840946">baggie</gwmw> and mail it to us. You may also want to check with neighbors or the local county extension, as they may have an idea as to what you have growing in your area.

Lake & Pond Chemical Application, Q&A Series

Over the next few weeks I will be posting a series of Questions & Answers from the recent email correspondence from customers.

Question #6

I have Aquacide Pellets for Water Willow, AquaClear Pellets and Cutrine-Plus Liquid for algae, how much do I apply? We live on the finger of a lake and know that I will probably have to reach over to my neighbor's bank or his problem will spread over to my side.

Answer #6

10 lbs. of Aquacide Pellets will treat a 50 foot x 25 foot area 2 times for the Water Willow.

A gallon of Cutrine-Plus Liquid is applied over a volume of water (as opposed to the surface area with the pellets). One gallon will treat 1/2 acre (150 feet x 150 feet) with a maximum depth of 6 feet.

10 lbs. of AquaClear Pellets will treat a 50 foot x 80 foot area 5 times to reduce muck. (Remember the AquaClear Pellets can breakdown the Aquacide Pellets as well as the muck so wait three weeks after the Aquacide Pellets before applying AquaClear Pellets)

Aquacide Pellets is a systemic option for Water Willow and Elephant Ear. It may also do some damage to Water Iris if you apply them heavily to the growing area. Apply early spring at the first sign of new growth. Repeat treatment will be needed to kill the entire root system.

Shore-Klear Liquid is a second systemic option for all three weeds. Apply mid season when weeds are actively growing and in full bloom.
Problem:

<gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15534971266081326730288">forms</gwmw> dense mats of vegetation that can interfere with aquatic recreation and destroy fish and wildlife habitat. <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15534971278129663833117">can</gwmw> spread in a variety of reproduction by fragmentation, seeds, tubers, as well as buds which is overwintering of buds. One square meter of can produce up to 5,000 tubers. Once established, it readily spreads by waterfowl and boating activities. It can very quickly take over a lake or pond if left unattended.

Solutions:

As with most lake weeds, there are four main methods for eradication of Hydrilla, water drawdown, physical removal, biological control with “grass eating carp” or<gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-3" id="gwmw-15534971313980853498910"> ,</gwmw> as well as chemical treatment.

If possible a water drawdown combined with physical removal of dead vegetation is a good method to start with and that may be all that is needed.

The second option is “grass eating carp”. Find more information online or through your local game and fish or county extension agency.

If <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-3" id="gwmw-15534971341333399092153">water drawdown</gwmw> is not an option chemical treatment is a safe and effective alternative.

If infestation is thick, rake out or break up mats of the weeds before applying herbicide. Rake out again when weeds have died.

“Just letting you know this treatment did the trick! Thanks.”

W.B., Gilford, NH

Cut and rake dead vegetation from your beachfront, dead Cattails, Reeds, and dormant underwater weeds all within reach.

With the foliage cleared, all that’s left is “muck”. Rake your lake or pond on a regular basis, ideally once or twice a week. <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-3" id="gwmw-15534969594073886886986">(</gwmw>We also carry AquaClear Pellets to help speed up this process.)

The next step is to identify the weeds and algae remnants from last season to prepare for spring herbicide treatment. See "Weed Information" page for great pictures and descriptions of the most common and invasive lake weeds and algae.

Discuss a game plan with your neighbors for the upcoming season. There are multiple options: physical removal, mechanical cutting, biological control (grass eating carp), water draw down and aquatic weed killer. Now is the time to plan, the more neighbors involved, the larger the treatment area, the longer time between treatments.

Contact us with any questions you or your neighbors may have. Remember, Summer is just around the corner.

Once you have a game plan for the season, contact your local county extension service, as public water usually requires an application permit

“It has been over 1 week since I sprayed…There is absolutely no weeds and algae floating around! Thank you for the direction on this.”

S., Edinburgh, IN

Question two in the Q+A Series is recent correspondence from a customer that initially wanted to remove dead weeds and “muck” on the bottom. Beneficial pond bacteria is an excellent option. Along with the “muck” the same customer wants to control Water Willow and Algae.

Question #2- Can we spray those aquatic weeds now or wait until we get our coldest weather and hope that they die down, then spray as they begin to come back?

Most liquid aquatic herbicides and algaecides are best-applied early spring and summer when lake weeds and algae begin actively growing. Application should be made when water temperature is 55 to 60 degrees or above. If applied prior to growth or in water temperatures below 55 degrees overall effectiveness may be reduced.

Glyphosate is a second option best-applied mid to late season when lake weeds are above the water surface and in full bloom. Unlike other liquid options, this must be sprayed directly onto the exposed foliage not into the water.

Early season control is will reduce the amount of additional decay and “muck” buildup and also allow more time to this summer to enjoy your recreational area.

Over the next few weeds I will be posting a series of Questions & Answers from the recent email correspondence from customers.

Question #1:

If I get the Cutrine-Plus Liquid and AquaClear Pellets will that control my grasses too? I think we have Water Willow; do we have to spray with something else

Answer #1:

Cutrine-Plus Liquid is an excellent option for controlling most varieties of <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-3" id="gwmw-15534963141987629642314">algae including</gwmw> filamentous algae, Chara algae and planktonic algae. Cutrine-Plus Liquid will not kill lake weeds or pond weeds.

Shore-Klear Liquid is a second systemic option best applied mid-season when most foliage is well above the water surface.

AquaClear Pellets are a great option for early spring prior to growth or mid to late season after using other product options. AquaClear Pellets will not kill anything but will strip muck from the area that can encourage lake weed growth.

How to Get Rid of Bladderwort: 3 Step Solution

<gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15525729218370840622760">to</gwmw> be a free-floating weed, fresh water, carnivorous lake weed which has more than 200 species and which is located throughout the world. This weed is generally discovered in all kinds of shallow, quiet as well as bog-like acidic waters. The main stem of this weed has 4-10 branched lateral leaves which are very delicate, thereby giving it a very lacy appearance.

The major part of Bladderwort weed lies below the surface and the same goes unnoticed until the time it rises the surface and its appearance in the late spring or early summer. Once it typically reaches the surface of the water, the weed sends up a beautiful yellow flower. This flower possesses lip like petals that have a resemblance with the Snapdragons.

<gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15525729272360036236128">named</gwmw> for its smaller bladder-like structures that are located throughout its branched underwater leaves. These are in the form of traps that catch tiny aquatic animals by the way of sucking the prey into the bladders. This weed reproduces from the tiny round buds called that help to the weed tip in the fall.

The removal of from the lake can be a difficult task, even for all those individuals who are experienced in terms of the treatment of aquatic weeds. However, if you are using the right approach and choosing the right products related to aquatic herbicide, you can easily eliminate larger accumulations of The easiest and fastest method you can use is chemical control with Aquacide Pellets.

These following steps should be performed to clean the easily without a lot of hassle:

Measure the area to be treated by calculating the length, width and average depth of the treatment area. Typically we use a four foot average depth for most lakefront treatment areas so length and width should suffice if depth is too difficult to measure.

Once this is calculated, the Aquacide Pellets can be applied at 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet (100’X10’) after start to grow which typically occurs around 50 degree water temps. The Aquacide will also work for other similar broad leaf water weeds such as Eurasian water milfoil, Coontail and Parrot Feather as well as cattails and water lilies.

If you are treating an entire body of water and have fish, we recommend aeration for the pond or treating only up to 1/3 of the body of water each week at the most. The pellets are safe for fish and wildlife and have no swimming restrictions. Irrigation of grass is ok, just wait three weeks to use the treated water to irrigate vegetable or flower gardens.

Biological Control of Purple Loosestrife

Purple loosestrife, scientifically known as Lythrum salicaria, is considered to be a perennial, herbaceous weed which is commonly found along all the waterways as well as throughout wetland habitats. This weed was first introduced in Europe, somewhere during the 1800s where it was found either in the shop ballasts or as an ornamental. This kind of weed can also be found in many areas in the United States. Considering many factors, this weed is legislated for eradication.

The recognition of purple loosestrife for eradication:

Purple happens to be a large plant that grows up to a length of 3 meters tall. The inflorescence looks like a spike of a number of showy magenta flowers which are set in the cluster-like arrangement. Each flower of the weed comprises of 5-7 petals that have a small yellow center. The stems of this weed are woody in nature and have a square-like shape along with 5-6 sides. Purple loosestrife is considered to be abundant seed makers as one mature plant that is able to produce millions of seeds.

The effects of purple loosestrife:

Once the weed is fully established, purple loosestrife crowds out native vegetation. This often creates a monoculture. Along with the loss of this weed also has ill effects on all kinds of waterfowl nesting habitat and the same can harm a lot of algal communities and some amphibians. This weed also reduces water flow and its quality. Other negative effects of this weed are inhibition of the transportation, degradation of the activities like fishing and degradation recreation areas.

:

One way to control the long term prevalence of the purple loosestrife is biologically with AquaClear Pellets which are microorganisms that consume the nutrient rich “muck” and sediment that the purple loosestrife and other weeds like cattails and water lilies thrive in. The AquaClear Pellets are a great way to improve water clarity and cut down on sulfur odor and stench in the area.

Chemical treatment is also very effective and easy:

Pellets with 2,4-D are a great way to treat the purple loosestrife as well as cattails and lilies without affecting the habitat around such as fish and wildlife. They are systemic so they will eradicate the root system over time.

Order AquaClear Pellets dissolve Muck/Sludge

Lake fronts and often ponds become very murky during the spring and early summer season. After a long winter with no filtration, the ponds generally gather fine particles that float on the water as well as more muck and sludge at the bottom, thereby causing murky brown cloudy water. These fine floating particles are usually small enough that they can pass through a number of pond filters so that the water in the pond can remain cloudy for some time.

Pond cleaning is not a hassle-free process. If you practice it step by step using fair solutions, you can clean your pond easily and keep it murk free for a good time period.

<gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15506559211269374737662">are</gwmw> solutions to clean pond water:

Skimming to clean floating debris:

The floating surface debris is the very first thing that any person observes while beginning with the process of pond cleaning. This is also the very first step and very first solution to your process of cleaning the pond. Remove as much floating debris as is possible before cleaning the pond liner. This is important because if you do not remove the debris, you would only be cleaning the pond partially. All kinds of floating debris in the pond include substances such as dead insects, twigs, leaves, sticks as well as larvae. All the debris could be either removed the way of a basic pond net or you can also make the use of an automatic skimmer available in the market.

Cleaning using a vacuum:

This is a very good method of pond cleaning, especially if you are wanting to clean the floor of the pond. This process can help you to combat the bottom sludge present in the pond. You can reduce most of the sludge using this process so that the pond becomes a healthy home for your fish. This process may require draining the pond, however, it is only important if you are removing the sludge using a rake or a net. Invest in a good quality water vacuum and you can easily clean the bottom of the pond liner without actually draining the water. Always choose the model which can keep the suction at good depths and which has an extendable handle to give you an easy cleaning experience.

Beneficial bacteria:

Supplement the pond using a beneficial bacteria product, AquaClear Pellets for bottom muck and AquaClear Liquid for the floating finer particle debris. These help to break down any kind of lingering waste that has been prevailing after the two methods or processes have been performed. Most of the treatments make the use of highly concentrated bacteria that is easily able to break down the organic matter present in the pond. This is a vital part of pond cleaning.

Removal of algae:

Algae is not a technical waste that rests in the pond, however, the cleaning of it is very important as it intrudes with the overall quality of water and also increases the buildup of sludge. You don’t have to necessarily drain a pond in order to combat algae. Make the use of a pond vacuum. Another method which is even better is the installation of a UV clarifier that helps to filter the water and destroy the algae at a cellular level. You can also use fast acting to eliminate the algae very quickly.

Optimizing water filtration:

This one is the final thing that you must do while cleaning your pond. Make sure that water filtration is performing its best so as to reduce future cleaning and maintenance. Install a healthy biological filtration system your pond as it is going to have issues with the quality of water. Also, use a filter having an efficient mechanical media that would reduce overall debris present in the pond.

Follow these methods/steps for an easy pond cleaning experience.

How to Get Rid of Pond Muck?

Pond muck is considered to be the accumulation of all kinds of wasteful substances such as fish waste, decaying plants as well as other organic materials which end up accumulating at the very bottom of the pond. Over time, this sludge can build up into inches or even feet and become thicker and denser, thereby becoming a home for all kinds of leeches and worms as well as a smelly dirty place to swim.

Muck also includes the accumulation of materials such as leaves and branches of trees, clippings of the grass, dead and decaying aquatic weeds, fertilizers as well as animal waste. Different water bodies like ponds, lake frontages accumulate these mucks naturally as they begin to age. Unless the water comprises an inlet and an outlet, this muck generally has no place to escape and hence not enough natural oxygen to take. The absence of oxygen then makes this muck to decay and the process begins to speed up with time.

Anaerobic bacteria that lives down the pond does its best to break the pond muck by the way of producing hydrogen sulfide that also leaves smell like rotten egg. The same thing also contributes as to the production of methane, ammonia and carbon dioxide, which feeds the algae and weed, and remains toxic to the fish.

The good news is that you can now easily clean the pond muck. This problem can easily be resolved and you can get rid of pond muck by the way of different procedures and methods. These procedures can also clean the pond and can make the water clearer than before. The process of aeration is considered to be one popular process which helps with the cleaning of the pond.

Aeration:

Adding more so in ponds than lakes helps to decrease the pond muck and eventually remove the same. The inflow of oxygen by the way of aeration not only helps to keep your fish also helps the beneficial bacteria in the pond. The aerobic beneficial bacteria are alive and they require oxygen as well. The process of aeration wards off<gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-3" id="gwmw-15506555279010628165409"> .</gwmw> This stagnates the columns of water and forms layers. The upper portion of the body of the is exposed to the air has oxygen while the deeper areas do not get enough oxygen. Implementation of a good aeration system makes sure that oxygen is distributed evenly to all the areas and this influx of oxygen helps all the beneficial bacteria spread and feed on the accumulated organic debris and eventually clean the same. This method can take a longer time to clean up the area.

Manual Removal:

Manual removal is not the easiest job, however, this process is still used by a number of people to remove excess pond muck from their ponds. A bucket and a wheelbarrow are used for the manual removal of the pond muck for this particular purpose. All kinds of debris and substances present in the pond muck are extracted by the use of a rake that helps to rake out the dirt before the process of treatment actually takes its shape. This particular process also allows the aerobic beneficial bacteria to target the fine debris which is very difficult to remove and eventually the surface of the pond is cleaned well.

AquaClear Pellets

AquaClear Pellets are designed with microbes that consume the dead vegetation and turn it into gas and water-soluble compounds. They are safe for fish and wildlife and work relatively fast and efficiently.

We recommend ideally removing the large debris first, followed by raking and applying AquaClear Pellets weekly until the “muck” and dead vegetation are cleared followed by the aeration and periodic with AquaClear Pellets as needed.

How to Clean Gross Murky Pond Water Fast?

If you have a pond or lakefront property, then you must know that it is not very easy to maintain. At the same time, maintaining the waterfront recreational area is not all that difficult either. Generally, your pond gives you important signs which signal to the fact that it requires a good cleaning of the muck that has built up in the pond over months or years. When you walk into the water and sink into the muck/dead vegetation, you can smell a rotting odor and or the water is cloudy and murky looking are all indications that it may be time to resolve the issue.

If you are not paying enough attention to these signs, your pond, as well as fish, can take a turn for the worse and therefore it is very important to clean your pond every now and then.

How to clean a pond?

There are multiple things to solve the problem and minimize future issues.

Figure out the size of the pond:

Before beginning the procedure of cleaning the pond or lakefront, you must get well-acquainted with the size of the pond. It is very important to know the size of the pond before starting the cleaning process. This is because the size of the pond is going to change your muck treatment plan. Figure out the surface area (Length X Width) in square footage.

Important tools:

After figuring out the size of the pond, the next step involving how to clean a pond is the accumulation of all the important tools that you would need to clean the pond. What all tools are required for the process again depends upon the overall size and type of debris and or muck in the pond or waterfront area. We recommend physically removing any large debris such as branches, rakes, gloves along with some waterproof waders depending on water temperature may also come in handy.

Popular cleaning systems used by the people:

There are a number of ways using which you can remove excess muck that forms the bottom of the pond and further restore the oxygen levels present in the water. Each treatment so adopted can be used on its own. However, experts claim that if you combine the below-listed treatments together, you will get the best effects with the process of cleaning:

Helpful bacteria:

These AquaClear Pellets are formulated to dissolve the muck and dead vegetation. If this process is used consistently, the helpful bacteria can break down the muck and then help to clean the rest of the water. If the AquaClear Pellets are used consistently, you can plan on ½ to 1 inch of muck and decaying material week. For the best results, the bacteria to be distributed evenly through the surface of the area (roughly one pellet per 18 – 22 inches).

Aeration system:

Aeration can help maintain a clean water frontage after the dead vegetation has been eliminated or minimized. This system blows air into the bottom of the pond and pushes the still water onto the surface. The process then lets the water from the bottom absorb enough oxygen at the surface which also helps to release various other gases like hydrogen sulfide.

After you perform all these cleaning methods, make sure that your pond and lakefront stays healthy.

Having a pond or lake in the back yard is one of the dreams for every homeowner and if you are lucky enough to have one you need to know a lot in order to keep your area clean and safe. There is a lot of energy that the perfect area and make it suitable for spending time over the spring and summer time. In order to keep the area from being contaminated, it is going to take some work and planning. So gather the information that can benefit you and if you must take the help of professional to stop the spread of Eurasian Water Milfoil. Here in this article, we will discuss the different ways in which you can stop the spread of Eurasian Water Milfoil. So scroll down and check out the methods of water milfoil control:
In order to stop the growth of Eurasian Water Milfoil into your pond or lake, you must follow the below-mentioned points to do a successful water milfoil control:
First of all, you must remove the plants that can get an access into the pond. Make sure the roots and all foliage are removed completely. Even if it is a bucket that has some plants, remove it all. Always remember to empty the bait bucket on the ground and you must not also dump live fish from a bait bucket inside your pond. Apart from this, there are some highly effective ways in which you can perform the water milfoil control method.
Check out below to know more about the water milfoil control:

1. Biological Control: The biological water milfoil control includes the natural ways of controlling the growth of the plant it involves the natural processes in which the growth and development of the water milfoil is stopped by killing it or by slowing its growth. Milfoil Weevil is found in North America and it eats the native Milfoil or Eurasian Water Milfoil. It lays its eggs on the surface of the stems of the plant and while the larva hatches it eats the stem. It creates a lot of damage to the plant. The AquaClear Pellets by Aquacide Company are micro-organisms in a pellet form that will remove nutrients and the food supply providing a strong growing environment for the milfoil.

2. Chemical Control: The chemical process involves introducing herbicides such as Aquacide Pellets into the water in order to get rid of the infection. The herbicides are applied on Eurasian Water Milfoil in order to control its growth. The Aquacide Pellets are safe to use and easy to apply, they are also relatively fast acting, typically three weeks for a full kill.

3. Mechanical Control: The mechanical method of water milfoil control involves cutting or pulling of the Eurasian Water Milfoil with the help of machines. However the stems of this plant grow so fast that cutting back again and again becomes a big trouble. <gwmw class="ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-anim ginger-module-highlighter-mistake-type-1" id="gwmw-15504954232594422958824">the</gwmw> water milfoil from growing back again.

Hope the above mentioned points will help you in getting the pond clean from any infection and water milfoil control.

The aquatic plant Water Lily belongs to the botanical family Nymphaeaceae. While there are 58 species of these freshwater found in the tropical and temperate regions of the world, the two main varieties include the Tropical Water Lily and the Hardy Water Lily. As the name might suggest, the Hardy Water Lilly can survive the cooler temperatures as well. The hardy water lilies are grown in the and their breeding is easy if you follow the steps correctly. The lilies can take a variety of sizes with flowers being as large as the goblet or as small as a thimble. The colors can be as diverse and include the white, maroon, golden yellow, pink and other water lily flower varieties. Water lilies and their different size varieties suit the different water the larger lakes and the tub garden. Apart from minimizing the spread of Aquatic weeds, these water plants are also to create a well balanced aquatic ecological environment.

Environment Favoring The Growth Of Water Lilies

Water lilies require sunlight for their growth. While they may withstand shade for some time period, they still need sunlight for at least 3 hours every day. Moving water is detrimental to the growth of the plantation and you should be careful to plant them away from any pumps or recreational areas. Disturbance in the plant roots may cause plantation failure, and hence choose the still water bodies only.

Water Depth

Water lilies can also be grown in the more shallow water bodies and do not require extensive water depths towards Most of the varieties of the species grow having a depth of 40 to 60 cm, while the pygmy lilies grew at around 15 to 25 cm of water depth as well. In other cases, you can plant the lily at a water body with 1 m depth.

Use The Planting Basket

Planting baskets are quite useful towards growing the water lily and for planting them. This approach is suitable for all water lily plantations, except those that are carried out the earth-based lakes. For the pygmy and the small lilies, you need a basket of around 5 liters, while the larger lilies required the same of 10-liter capacity. Use of water baskets will enable you to move your lilies within your pond easily, and will also provide for better soil manipulation (like replacement or topping) whenever necessary.

Choosing The Right Soil

The clay garden soil is the best for growing water lilies. The heavy can better hold the plantations and provides for better consistency as well. The chalky, sandy or light soil should be avoided because they are acidic and the water lilies prefer the alkaline and neutral soils.

Planting The Water Lilies

You can place the water lily plant the basket and anchor it with the right soil. The roots should be firmly secured and hence you need to press on the soil adequately. The shoots should be positioned upwards before you gently place the basket in your garden tub or pond.

During the initial growth period, the water lilies will have strong roots while roots will gradually thin themselves so that the plant can easily absorb the nutrients from the soil. You can also use pea gravel for top dressing the plantation baskets. Remember that the right kind of soil is necessary for the plantation to be successful. If you do not have the clay soil, you can also buy directly from your local nursery or garden center.

Treatment When Necessary

If / when the lilies begin to take over the pond or lake, or if they already have, there are many methods to reign them back in but keep them at a healthier less invasive level. Contact us here https://www.killlakeweeds.com/pages/contact-us or call 1-800-328-9350 for further assistance.

However, there are some short term practices like aeration, chemical or biological additives or ultrasound technology involved in this process.

Algae growth conditions: In very pond a basic level of algae is present and it is normal to have that level. When it starts can kill the aquatic animals and plants present the water bodies. So it is important to maintain an ecological balance.

Algae problems: The extreme level of also known as blue-green algae can have a bad impact on the pond as the toxins released through these bacteria can kill the aquatic plants and animals. If not treated it can be a threat to any pond.
