Long before his name became synonymous with journalists being tried by kangaroo courts of oppressive regimes thanks to the Al Jazeera trial, I knew Mohamed Fadel Fahmy as one of Egypt’s best journalists and one of my good friends. We met back in 2007 when he was working for the Red Cross in Lebanon and Iraq, and, according to him, it was my tweets about the oncoming January 25 Revolution that got him to jump on a plane and come to Egypt in 2011, and he has stayed ever since.

When 16-year old Palestinian, Farah Baker began tweeting about the bombs falling around her, she could never have guessed that she would rise to such prominence. But in the space of just a few weeks, her followers on Twitter jumped from 800 to 207,000 with people hungry for a first-hand, personal account of what was transpiring in Gaza. Baker is just one of the few Palestinians turning to social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to share photos of the destruction in the Gaza Strip, disseminate information, updates, and posts.

In our new world that lives and dies on social media, officials condemn and condone in 140 characters while everyone is certain of the relevance and soundness of their opinion, reason and logic have become alien concepts. In this new order where expertise is born in a heated moment, then dies as soon as the emotions subside while real bodies pile up in conflict zones where the “expert” megaphone cannot reach, commonsense and pragmatism are not required nor desired.

The Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said that Qatar, Turkey, the United States and the Muslim Brotherhood are funding new online media projects that "aim to undermine Egypt's stability." During a meeting held on Sunday with editors-in-chief of Egyptian national, partisan and private newspapers, the former defence minister warned against "powers that are currently working on using the Internet to bring down the nation by promoting subversive ideas via social networking sites," according to the state-run news agency MENA, whose editor-in-chief also attended the meeting with the president.

Since the 25 January Revolution in 2011, political unrest has held Egypt in its grip amid rapid regime changes. The ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak was followed by military rule, the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, the ascent and ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and finally the crackdown on the Brotherhood and rise to power of current President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Before the January 2011 uprising, street art was little known in Egypt. Then came the revolution and with it, an outburst of creativity. With the fall of the authoritarian regime of Hosni Mubarak, Egyptian artists who had routinely faced censorship restrictions under his autocratic rule, felt a strong urge to break out of the confines of their studios and reclaim public spaces. Young artists in particular, decided they needed bigger canvases for the grand ideas they wanted to convey through their paintings. To celebrate their newfound liberation, many of them took their art directly to the people and onto the streets, expressing their views and opinions on public walls and on the sides of buildings.

(Sanaa) – Kuwait’s new telecommunications law gives the government sweeping powers to block content, deny access to the Internet, and revoke licenses without giving reasons. The government should amend the law to limit the restrictions on telecommunication providers and users to no more than what international human rights law permits.

SOCIAL MEDIA erupted this week with footage of James Foley, an American journalist, brutally beheaded at the hands of ISIS. YouTube removed one version of the video, citing a violation of their policy on violent content. On Tuesday, Twitter announced a new policy that it would remove images and video of the deceased at the request of family members. Accounts that featured the graphic imagery started disappearing from the site. Though Twitter can now remove certain images only at the request of family members, Twitter users started urging friends not to share the content anyway. In less than two hours, the hashtag #ISISMediaBlackout had more than 3,800 tweets.

Every time a new round of violence breaks out in Palestine or Israel, a parallel dispute surfaces around whether or not the media is biased toward one side of the conflict or the other. There is usually little agreement to be found. Israel's latest invasion of Gaza, though, has brought with it a different discussion about the media's coverage. The debate has certainly not died down—headlines, stray quotes, pictures and interview counts are being scrutinized as closely as ever. Yet more and more people seem to agree that Israel is facing tougher coverage than it has in the past.

Whether by choice or by force, the result was the same: the Lebanese media once again fell into the trap of the worst aspect of nationalism, blind loyalty. It was not limited to the sight of a newsreader wearing a military uniform in solidarity with the army, nor to lengthy and epic speeches recited by journalists and correspondents. Lebanese coverage of the bloody confrontation in Arsal between the Lebanese army and the Al-Nusra Front’s insurgents showed the Lebanese media abandoning its professional role to report events as they are, to search for the truth, and to ask questions when necessary.

At least two journalists and three media workers affiliated with the privately owned Albarqa TV station were abducted at a checkpoint in the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk on Monday, according to the station and news reports. The reports said the five were taken by a militant group affiliated with Islamists after the crew covered the inauguration of Libya's newly elected parliament. Conflict between various militant groups, some affiliated with Al-Qaeda and some with the government, has escalated in recent months in Libya, according to news reports.

ZEINA Daccache knows all too well that her country is characterised by deep and disorienting contradictions. “You need to imagine Lebanon as different Lebanons,’’ says the prize-winning filmmaker, drama therapist and comedian. “Around Beirut, in the more Westernised places, you can see everyone betraying everyone (sexually),’’ she says, using hyperbole to explain how many locals flirt openly in cafes, bars and even the odd underground nightclub. Yet just a few streets away, women and girls are forced into arranged and underage marriages, or jailed for adultery, which is a crime in Lebanon.

Middle East pay-TV operator OSN has launched the first of its kind Internet-enabled satellite receiver and recorder with full 3D and high definition (HD) capabilities in Egypt, in an investment that it hopes will help counter content piracy. OSN Plus HD, which is supported by Cable Network Egypt, provides a digital video recorder (DVR), allowing Egypt-based viewers to pause and record live television for the first time. Video-on-demand (VOD) – with premium movies, TV series and children's entertainment – is also a feature of the new service.
