Sri Lanka Tourism launches home stay programme

To supplement the demand for accommodation at various tourist destinations in the country, Sri Lanka Tourism launched the Home Stay and Bungalow program adding another exciting segment to present accommodation categories.

At present Sri Lanka Tourism has recognized 1-5 star class hotels, guest houses, Ayurveda hotels, eco lodges, apartment hotels, boutique villas and hotels, and camping sites. Commenting on the Home Stay and Bungalow program, Chairman Sri Lanka Tourism said: "This is a different approach to provide clean, comfortable and affordable supplementary accommodation to tourists. They will have an opportunity of an engaging experience of customs, traditions, authentic cuisine and other attractions of the location, while staying with the local host, thus giving them a memorable experience during their holiday; and it will help us to reinforce one of our key pillars in positioning, the 'Authenticity' of our tourism product". Home Stay and Bungalows once approved by the Standards & Quality Assurance division of Sri Lanka Tourism will be duly publicized. An accommodation guide listing all registered Home Stay properties and Bungalows will be issued to enable both domestic and foreign tourists to avail themselves of this facility.
The objectives of the program are to provide accreditation to the Home Stay and Bungalow category, broaden the stakeholders base in tourism, expand the benefits of tourism to the community, as well as to support the demand for supplementary accommodation in urban areas, and provide employment and economic benefits to the local community.
Sri Lanka received 654,000 tourists in 2010. This figure is expected to go up to 750,000 tourists (in 2011). The Home Stay and Bungalow program is expected to generate about 1000-1500 rooms immediately.
Deputy Minister of Economic Development Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said "The Mahinda Chinthana has clearly identified that benefits of all economic development will have to go down to the common people. The Home Stay program will enable the community to get directly involved in the tourism industry and derive its benefits, and will further enable us to take tourism to a higher level of success".
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has come out with criteria to inspect and register such establishments and all required information can either be collected from the Quality Assurance division or downloaded from www.sltds.gov.lk .
Commenting on the new scheme Dileep Mudadeniya, Head of Standards & Quality Assurance and Investment said: "New rooms which are under construction will take another 2 years to come to the market. But we have untapped potential for Home Stays and Bungalows that can be turned immediately into accommodation units to meet the immediate demand. Further, this is a well known accommodation category in Europe, and even in India, and our visitors are familiar with the concept.''
While any private house in good condition with owners occupying the same house and located in an easily accessible part of the country will primarily qualify to register as a Home Stay unit, unoccupied houses with cooking/meals (and other guest service) facilities are categorized as Bungalows. The house shall fulfill the minimum requirements of the Home Stay scheme including having one or more rooms for accommodation, with each room having separate attached bathroom facilities. Interested parties are at liberty to submit fresh proposals for approval for setting up Home Stay/Bungalow units in suitable locations, under the supervision Sri Lanka Tourism. As part of the program Sri Lanka Tourism will also be providing a training for all Bungalow and Home Stay owners covering areas such as on-line marketing, house keeping, cooking with focus on guest satisfaction, kitchen hygiene, storage of food, garbage disposal, preparation of authentic cuisine, emergencies etc .
Etisalat has come forward to promote and distribute this concept via a dedicated portal. "In the current context, the online medium has by-passed many traditional channels and real world barriers reaching the global customer at a minimal cost. Home-stay portal will enable local property owners to market their home-stay online and attract potential tourists with just a click. In the long run, we are aiming at providing knowledge to them which will help them in improving their services and standards. Our vision & mission had always been geared towards extending people's reach via advanced technologies. I strongly believe that this initiative will be a success and we are delighted and honored to be part of this initiative to empower Sri Lanka tourism sector to be the wonder of Asia" CEO Etisalat Sri Lanka, Dumindra Rathnayaka said.
Regional Development Bank (RDB ) has come forward to provide limited loan assistance for the concept. Commenting on the program Chairperson of the RDB Janaki Kuruppu, said "At RDB we believe in Empowering Sri Lankans" to achieve economic development of their families. We are the only 100% GOSL owned bank serving the real SME sector, with a reach of over 200 service points in rural Sri Lanka alone. We are always on the lookout for ventures that will appeal to our target customers. We feel the type of household that will go for this "Home Stay" concept will be very much within the reach of our customer base and will be a great opportunity for them. The 1990 film was directed by the late Mukul Anand. Karan recalls visiting the sets in Mandwa during the filming of the climax when Amitabh Bachchan, the original Vijay, runs through flames. Kancha is killed in an encounter and Vijay is fatally wounded. Reciting Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s famous poem, Agneepath, he explains his reasons for taking to a life of crime and breathes his last with his head cradled in his mother, Suhasini’s (Rohini Hattangadi) lap.

“I remember my father (producer Yash Johar) in a light pink shirt, sweating profusely, personally overseeing the arrangements. He wanted it to be a smooth run for Mr Bachchan and it was,” says Karan 11 years later, adding that his reasons for remaking Agneepath is that it’s a film his dad was really proud of, and had been shattered when it failed commercially.

Karan promises that this tribute to his dad’s memory will make the box-office ring as he had intended. He, as a result, has reworked the original script, doing away with the character of the coconut seller Krishnan that fetched Mithun Chakraborty a best supporting actor award.
Hrithik reiterates that the remake is a radically different film: “During the narration, I reacted emotionally to the subject as a new story with no strings attaching it to the old one. Had the intention been to just recreate the earlier film, I would not have done it. But what I heard sparked off my interest and I told myself, ‘I can do this, I will enjoy doing it!’”.
Mukul Anand had admitted to being inspired by the Hollywood classic Scarface. Vijay Dinanath Chauhan was modelled on Manya Surve, the first underworld gangster to be shot dead in a police encounter in Mumbai. Bachchan came up with a National Award-winning performance and even tried to copy the gangster’s voice. The husky impersonation, so unlike his usual baritone, had alienated the audience initially, and he had to redub his lines in his original voice.
“But in later years, whenever I recited my father’s lines from Agneepath, I have done it in a husky whisper and been flooded with compliments,” says Bachchan, who’s looking forward to seeing Hrithik’s spin on one of his most famous characters.
Hrithik refuses to reveal what improvisations he has up his sleeve but insists that the motive is not to take on Bachchan. He recalls watching the original film in a theatre with a group of children. He reminisces, “I was completely blown away by Mr Bachchan’s look and voice. Amir Khan New Movie-Dhobi Ghat

What's it about: This is a film where the audience can't groan about Bollywood churning out the same films over and over again. Dhobi Ghat is different from anything you have seen before. It is a story of one city and four people who live in it. These characters belong to different strata of society. However, their lives are connected by what they do and the city they've made their home. There's Arun (Khan), a reclusive painter who meets Shai (Dogra) an investment banker from the US on a sabbatical in Maximum City. One night and one misunderstanding later, they go back to being strangers. Shai then meets her dhobi Munna (Prateik) who's also a wannabe actor and becomes her willing guide to the city. Meanwhile, Arun moves into a new house and 'meets' Yasmin, (Kriti), the previous tenant of the house.

What's hot: Mumbai is a city like no other. Dhobi Ghat is an unflinching look at the tangled lives of the inhabitants of the city, who belong to different financial and cultural ladders. It pulls you in and makes you examine people from all walks of life. A film on the city could easily have become a clich © as would have the characters but first-time director Kiran Rao does her best to blindside your expectations, spin your emotions around and overturn your preconceptions in this penetrating, at times uncomfortably candid, portrait of present-day relations. This compelling urban drama tracks the delicate intersections of characters' intertwined lives in surprising and illuminating ways. This isn't a feel-good film that leaves you feeling uplifted or wiser. It doesn't offer any answers. Who is the silent old lady? Did Yasmin ultimately take the drastic step? Does Shai meet Arun in the end? You simply absorb the visuals, the characters and their inner struggles in this free-floating narrative. There are no heroes or villains in this film -- just human beings with their dreams, hopes and frailties. That's the best part about the film. It doesn't attempt to judge or raise any questions. It simply projects the many faces of the city and its residents. When all is said and done, you may relate to and see yourself not in each individual character, but with the problems they face and deal with on a daily basis. The ensemble cast is simply amazing. Aamir Khan pours himself into the character. Prateik is impressive. Kriti makes a striking debut. Monica deserves special mention for her awesomeness. Cinematography by Tushar Kanti Ray and the background by Gustavo Santaolalla further add to the magic.

What's not: What will work against the film is that it is made for a niche audience. It begins rather slowly and takes time to establish the characters. Arun's mourning of Yasmin seems over-the-top. Viewers will go in expecting a certain kind of a film -- what with Aamir Khan in it -- and might feel they haven't got their money's worth.

Dinesh launches first ever Buddhist oratorio

Young talented musician Dinesh Subasinghe is one of the privileged guys in his field because he has had the privilege to study in the music academy of globally renowned musician A. R. Rahman.

This individual stepped into the limelight not merely two months ago with the release of his first ever Buddhist oratorio which is said to be the first philosophic piece of musical work since Professor Premasiri Khemadsa’s cantata on Buddha’s ‘Pan Nirvana’. This talented composer is ranked among some of the greatest western composers whose oratorios seem to have no competitive advantage over those of Dinesh. This piece is said to be his first exclusive composition since coming down for holidays from the A. R.RAHMAN academy in India. Dinesh has titled his oratorio CD as ‘The Buddha- River of Kindness’. It is available at ‘Vibrations’ Union Place Keels Super- Island Wide, and at M Entertainment. The CD includes many genres in music, such as western classical, Sri Lankan folk, Japanese and Chinese styles, Buddhist chanting, Tibet music, pop music and Indian classical music.

Dinesh considers himself to be a rare musician who follows and appreciates ‘real art’. He does his journey at his own pace and hence neither follows trend nor sets it. Dinesh only wants to create genuine heartfelt music which he can relate to and in turn make it acceptable to the rest of the world. He therefore hopes to enhance his music as a language which can be expressed and communicated by anyone at a universal level. By doing this he hopes to establish a good musical reputation for his motherland, Sri Lanka.

The Oratorio is based on the life story of Lord Buddha. Just listening to the masterpiece of sorts is said to be a good form of relieving stress. Dinesh calls this ‘Music Therapy’ that makes people calm and makes them positive. The composer’s dream is to take this unique piece to a universal level where soon world famous orchestras will play it finally commemorating Sri Lankan music. However Dinesh feels this to be a challenge as Sri Lanka is still at the very inception of creating good universal texture through its own authentic music.

Dinesh wishes to acknowledge the following talented musical personnel who made his Buddhist oratorio a successful reality. Most profoundly from India those who represented the A.R.RAHMAN ACADEMY namely, John Anthony (a great Bollywood guitarist who has accompanied more than 3000 Indian movies),

the main cellist who played for A.R .RAHMAN movie solos EILIDH CATHERINE MARTIN, Asrhitha Arockiam ,Sahil Jeeth, Singh Rachinthan, Trivedi , Pranoi Praveen and others.

Further acknowledgements go out to Rev.B.Mahanama and Pragash Bosco who assisted toward bringing versatility in the tracks recorded. Dinesh takes this opportunity to mention some upcoming Sri Lankan Vocalists namely ‘Pabasara Shashyamali, Dinesh Tharanga, Raveen Kanishka and a few others who he feels have a bright future within the industry.

Speaking of Dinesh’s accomplishments thus far, it is intriguing to know that this young composer finished the first year foundation programme with an A GRADE and received his certificate from his living legend A.R.RAHMAN himself. Thereafter he worked for A.R. RAHMAN in his ‘nursery rhymes Audio CD narrated by Bollywood actress KATRINA Kaiff. He played violin, Rawan Hatta, kingiri and Ekthar in the CD and also worked within a string orchestra in mani rathnam’A Movie RAWAN’ which was recently released. He is the first Sri Lankan to study in Rahman’s academy and the first Sri Lankan musician to participate in Rahmans music projects. Dinesh is also a member of the Indian cine musicians union.

Shahid Kapoor was born in Mumbai on 25 February 1981 to actors Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem, who divorced when he was three years old. His father married the actress Supriya Pathak. He has a brother Ruhan and sister Sana as well as a step-brother Ishaan.

Shahid and Kareena Kapoor, his long term girlfriend broke up just before the release of Jab We Met and since then he has been linked with several actresses like Amrita Rao and Vidya Balan. Priyanka Ashok Chopra was born on 18 July 1982 in Jamshedpur and is fondly known as Mimi. Her father is Capt. Dr.Ashok Chopra and her mother is Dr.Madhu Chopra. She has a younger brother, Siddharth.
