And if you like something or don't like something, leave me a comment.

By the way, I recently launched a new blog venture called Archives*Open, a blog about archives, access, community and the Web focusing on how archivists are using current and emerging technologies to provide the public with more interactive and innovative access to archival materials.
Save This Page

Twitter Search: Tracking Archivists on Twitter

Twitter, the powerful and popular micro-blogging service, purchased Summize, a search engine that was tailored to search Twitter micro-blog posts (or in proper Twitter parlance, tweets).

The result is Twitter Search, a live search tool that both searches tweets and tracks and extrapolates trends based on the conversations taking place on Twitter. So, for example, last week, many people on Twitter were talking about Sarah Palin. As a result, Twitter Search determined that those words were trending and highlighted them on the home page. It's one way one can take the pulse of the Twitter world.

But back to search. Like Google, you can perform a basic search (or advanced search) on a keyword and, rather than receiving dated search results, you then see up to the minute results. Very cool.

You can also save a search as a RSS feed. Even more cool. So I saved a few searches with the words "Archives" and "Archivist OR Archivists" and added the resulting feed to arch.i.vi.us. You can now find the search results on the sidebar.

Be sure to check it out. And, if you are an archivist on Twitter, do not hesitate to make yourself known.
Save This Page

arch.i.vi.us - the i and the us

Arch.i.vi.us is news about archives, archivists and issues of concern to archivists, generated from news searches (machine generated with parameters set by humans), delicious tags (tagged by humans with the same interests as the topics of this blog) and RSS feeds from various sources.

Together, arch.i.vi.us is collecting information about:

Digitization

Digital Preservation

Web Archiving

Electronic Records Management

Knowledge Management and the Sharing of research efforts

In addition, there are some light-hearted, fun stuff, such as content pulled from YouTube and Flickr.

Arch.i.vi.us -The "i" represents the one source, you, me, the colleague in the cubicle down the hall who find useful information and the "us" is the collaborative effort spawned by the numerous "i" pooling together our interests and resources. Since the publication of the first post I have witnessed the emergence of at least one very well executed "aggregating" blog that is tailored for archivists, namely ArchivesBlogs.

I made some major changes to arch.i.vi.us that I hope will make it a one-stop shop for news related to digitzation and digital preservation.

First, I updated the Blogger template from the old static version to the new customizable, modify-on-the-fly version. Much easier to add/remove content modules, and much easier to pull in content from other websites.

Second, I am harnessing the power of the many, and in this case, the power of the many people out there who use del.i.cio.us (the inspiration for this blog) to tag websites or news item related to "digitization" and "digital preservation." Whatever is tagged with those tags will appear on arch.i.vi.us

By digitization, I mean the act of changing the format of a document, mostly from paper to digital so as to make it more accessible to people over the Web. And by digital preservation, I mean the research and practical work that is being done to preserve born-digital material of long-term / historical value so that they may be preserved and remain accessible throughout time.

Third, I added a Google News search widget that continuously scans the headlines for news on digitization and digital preservation.

Fourth, I added a YouTube video module that searches out any videos tagged with archivists. For fun.

Last but not least, I will maintain the actual blog module for now, though frequency of postings will vary and is still under development.

A final note: Since arch.i.vi.us is pulling in content from external sources I, nor arch.i.vi.us, is responsible for the accuracy, objectivity, or actual subject matter of the items appearing via syndication in this blog. While I have carefully established the parameters of the content being aggregated, I still urge everyone reading to be critical thinkers.
Save This Page

Digitization Spreads Like Wildfire, by Andrew Morris

Digitization Spreads Like Wildfire, by Andrew Morris: "Digitization is causing a 'massive transformation' in the media, entertainment, broadcasting and production industries, according to Shane Robison, executive vice president, chief strategy and technology officer of Hewlett-Packard."
Save This Page

UCLA Asia Institute: Event Calendar -- the comprehensive source for information about Asia-focused events in Southern California

UCLA Asia Institute: Event Calendar -- the comprehensive source for information about Asia-focused events in Southern California: "By most accounts, we in the library and information resources professions face an exhilarating, dynamic, and often daunting professional environment."
Save This Page

Media Infusion | PBS

Media Infusion | PBS: "The digitization and sharing of our collective knowledge began years ago, but it continues to grow at an amazing rate — while also expanding the available resources from just text and pictures to video and audio.
