Not all disabled characters are played by able-bodied actors. RJ Mitte (Walter "Flynn" White Jr.) in Breaking Bad, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) in Game of Thrones and Gabrielle Marion-Rivard in Gabrielle all embody their character's physical and mental disabilities.

Watch the three aforementioned actors at work in the windows embedded below and tell us: do you agree with Shinn that casting able-bodied actors in disabled roles undercuts the power of the work? Would you like to see more disabled actors in film and on television?
The goal of this act was to make Ontario fully accessible and inclusive to Persons with Disabilities (PwD) by 2025. This is an important piece of legislation, insofar as it recognizes PwD are an integral part to our social fabric in Ontario. Moreover, the AODA recognizes that more must be done, which is invariably a great start.
They are played by actors who are not disabled in real life.

It’s not hard to understand why: Financial realities necessitate stars in leading roles, and there aren't many disabled actors who are big box-office draws. But even allowing that fact, something strange is going on. The entertainment world keeps producing stories about disabled people, yet almost never casts disabled performers at all—whether in major or minor roles, playing disabled or able-bodied characters. Counterexamples, like RJ Mitte in Breaking Bad or Jamie Brewer in the first and third seasons of American Horror Story, are rare
The
Accessible Rat Race

       In
my last few years of high school in a small town, I kept trying to
enrol in art courses, but I was told by my guidance teacher that I
couldn't do it because if I wasn't holding the art tools myself I
wasn't really doing the work and that he'd give me an exclusion on
art credits. This was to become very important to me later on. So
when I moved to Toronto, I enrolled in college but I only lasted
through that first year because I couldn't decide what I wanted to do
next, so I decided to take a break to figure out what I wanted to do.
Little did I know that if you take a break as an individual with a
disability, you lose the little bit of momentum you have to get back
in the rat race. The one thing I realized is there aren't many entry
level jobs that you can get as a physically disabled person who can
use only one hand and cannot lift much, that are the kind of jobs
that would provide enough stimulation to encourage me to get back in
the race. And there really wasn't any college/career courses that
really excited me to want to dive back into the academic world,
because at the time, I hated essay writing. There is less incentive
for me to have wanted to go back to school because I was starting to
see my peers with disabilities graduating with degrees and still not
being able to get a job. Some have found paid work, some have gone
back to school, and some, like me, are keeping themselves busy
volunteering.

I,
as with many of my friends, have tried career placement programs with
varying success. When I went in and said that I wanted to do
something either in the arts, or in disability advocacy, they said,
“We don't have a template for that.” and all the templates they
had that they thought I would success in didn't appeal to me so the
program just said that they wished me luck, and sent me on my way. I
have observed with many of my friends the same frustrations; some of
them have gone back to school with really high expectations and come
out frustrated and some are even a little burnt out. And still, they
have trouble getting jobs matching their degrees. The educational
system is getting better at being inclusive, little by little, but
the career and job world needs to get better; there are always
exceptions to the rule. There are jobs that pop up for people with
disabilities but they seem to be connected to grants and programs.
When the grants and programs run out, the job disappears soon after.
There aren't a lot of places that are trying to creatively and
innovatively adjust the job to the person's unique abilities but the
places that do reap great rewards.

Another
barrier is how sticky the social assistance system can be, because if
you find even part-time meaningful work, there is usually more
paperwork and red tape that has to be filled out, and it can cause
more grief than not being paid at all. As a person with a disability
who likes to do more than sit around collecting my social assistance
I do a lot of volunteering, and I have a long resume of interesting
jobs to prove this. But because of my physical limitation, at some of
these organizations, when staff openings come up, they aren't even
open to the most qualified of us volunteers. Sometimes I feel like
I'm a professional volunteer. Organizations may cite the barriers to
hiring somebody with a disability is because of physical barriers
when most of the time it is a cultural barrier. So for right now, I
want everybody to stop and digest these ideas. I myself am going to
join the rat race with my art and creativity that my high school said
I didn't have, but I'm going to pace myself to avoid burnout.

you have shops and restaurants that have one to three steps that we
sometimes find ourselves looking longingly into but can't get in
today. Some of us know this pain all too well. There are others who
know it but don't want to think about it because it's just too
negative. And then there are others who don't understand the problem
at all. It is time to share the message in the community, the
barriers of inaccessibility. The answers to the problem may not be
simple, but that doesn't mean that we aren't ready for the
discussion. So it's time to share our feelings and get the discussion
going on accessibility. Let's really start talking today,

#moreaccessible

https://twitter.com/search?q=%23moreaccessible&src=savs&f=realtime

https://www.facebook.com/Moreaccessible

DOCUMENTARY HELP WANTED

I am looking for a film maker or
a few to help me collaborate on a documentary project that I would
like to do on myself, on the issues and barriers I face as a person
who uses a power chair. Because I have only partial use of one hand I
face a lot of obstacles trying to gain either work or figuring out
where to take my future. I have become a artist who likes to work
with video and photography but because of my disability I have not as
of yet gotten enough experience in either of these fields to be able
to apply for funding myself.

I am working on many media projects
looking at accessibility and one of the projects I would like to do
is a documentary of a higher calibre than I could produce by myself.
I do have video and media experience and I would like to collaborate
at all levels and use the production of this documentary as a
learning experience. I do have a GoPro camera that is capable of
professional quality footage [up to 4k] but I don't have the computer
equipment to process the high quality data so that's why, up until
now, I have just used it in a more automatic process high definition
form that has been simpler for me to edit on my own with my
accessibility modified computer, which is okay for most of the media
projects I have taken on up until now.

I do believe, to make a stronger
documentary, that it would be better to work with at least another
individual to give me another camera operator, editor and somebody to
collaborate on the storyline of the documentary to make the story
stronger and to give a defined direction. I would like to share some
of the production credits on this project. I know that this project
will take a little while to produce because we still need to find
funding after I find all the people who are going to help me with
this endeavour. My eventual goal is to make a documentary that is
strong enough to get into HOTDOCS and other film festivals, to share
the message of accessibility barriers with a wider audience. If you
are interested, contact me at arcohoon{-AT-]gmail.com or on Twitter
at @arc23. Thank you very much.

Attention Media Reporting on Accessibility News and Culture -

I am writing this open letter to encourage all media to consider devoting one or two pieces a month of coverage to stories relating to accessibility and the culture that surrounds it. For those of you who don't know what I mean by "accessible" I am talking about disability, but that is a term we as a community are trying to get away from. Right now, most of the news reported by the major news sources seem to want to make accessibility a health-related issue, which is not always the case. Sometimes that can actually take away from the message of the story. That's another trend I want to encourage everybody to get away from.

I would also like to encourage the media to bring a wider lens to all aspects to disability. For example, we have roles in all sorts of genres of art and media. We can also bring a fresh perspective to a lot of issues. It would be very helpful for the programs that specialize in arts and entertainment stories to give some time to accessible art projects and accessible artists on a monthly basis.

When the CBC cancelled their disability-issues program "Moving On" they promised to integrate accessible stories into their news, arts and current affairs programming on CBC Radio and television and since that time, the amount of coverage we have gotten has greatly diminished. So I encourage the CBC to put more of an effort into covering accessibility issues even if that means instituting a monthly quota on all their platforms (i.e. Two stories a month/per platform) to start.

I also encourage all the major broadcasters to have at least one reporter who specializes in accessibility issues. I really believe that this will help everybody have a greater understanding of accessibility issues.

Thanks
