The Snowball Effect Of Methane Gas

The world is warming, these facts are not disputed... The problem that we are going to run into is the "snowball effect". This is basically the idea that as the world warms it melts more snow... This snow used to reflect the heat from the sun, but now the much darker ground or water absorbs more of the suns heat... This increases global warming... More snow melt = faster warming... The same goes for melting permafrost. All of this permafrost that is melting contains methane gas which is a greenhouse gas just like carbon dioxide. As the world warms, it releases more and more trapped methane gas from the permafrost which only make global warming accelerate even more. More permafrost melt = More methane = faster warming. If we don't act quickly we will be past the point of no return, that is if we haven't passed it already...

Here are some newly declassified pictures that were unclassified by President Obama just a few days ago. President Bush deemed them unsuitable for public release for some strange reason... maybe it was that extra 20 that the oil companies slipped into his pocket? While it is refreshing to have a President that actually believes in science, I fear that the mess that Mr. Bush left us in has put climate change on the back burner...

Arctic Ice In A "Death Spiral"

Well we didn't manage to beat last years record thaw in the Arctic, but this years melt was the second worst on record in the Arctic. A disturbing trend has been forming over the past few decades and it looks like things are only going to get worse. Remember all of this melting is just going to increase the Snowball Effects of Global Warming. The more ice that is melted the more heat is absorbed by the darker seas. Also methane and other greenhouse gases are released as the ice continues to melt...

The Glaciers Around The World Are Melting

As the glaciers around the world melt the water that is run off lubricates the glaciers and make them retreat even quicker. Also the more water puddles on the tops of the glaciers the more heat is trapped in that water. Think of it this way, you can have a white shirt (snow and ice) or a black shirt (water) in the summer, which would you choose? Glad I don't live on the coast...

Antarctica Continues To Break Apart

A chunk of ice the size of the Isle of Man has broken away from Antarctica in what scientists believe is further evidence of a warming climate. To put that into perspective the Isle of Man is about 221 square miles!

Satellite images suggest that some of the adjoining ice shelf will collapse in the next few days or weeks. The Wilkins Ice Shelf has been stable for most of the last century, but began retreating in the 1990s. Six ice shelves in the same part of the continent have already been lost, says the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

Professor David Vaughan of BAS said: "Wilkins is the largest ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula yet to be threatened.

"I didn't expect to see things happen this quickly. The ice shelf is hanging by a thread - we'll know in the next few days or weeks what its fate will be."

Jim Elliott, who was on board the plane, said he had never seen anything like it before.

He said: "We flew along the main crack and observed the sheer scale of movement from the breakage.

"Big hefty chunks of ice, the size of small houses, look as though they've been thrown around like rubble - it's like an explosion."

A 41-by-2.5km (25-by-1.6 mile) berg has already broken away, and a large part of the Wilkins Ice Shelf is now protected only by a thin strip of ice spanning two islands.

Since an ice shelf is a floating platform of ice, its loss will have no impact on sea level. But scientists say it heightens concerns over the impact of climate change on this part of Antarctica.

'Unprecedented' warming

Professor Vaughan predicted in 1993 that the northern part of the Wilkins Ice Shelf would be lost within 30 years if climate warming continued. But he said it is happening more quickly than he expected.

He told BBC News: "What we're actually seeing is a chunk of the ice shelf drop off in a way that suggests it is not just a normal part of iceberg formation.

"This is not a sea level rise issue, but is yet another indication of climate change in the Antarctic Peninsula and how it is affecting the environment."

Scientists say the Antarctic Peninsula, which juts out into the Southern Ocean towards the tip of South America, has experienced unprecedented warming over the last 50 years.

Several ice shelves have retreated in the past 30 years - six of them collapsing completely.

Just this week it was released that 2007 tied for the warmest year on record according to NASA. The eight warmest years on record have all occurred since 1998, and the 14 warmest years in the record have all occurred since 1990.

As I watch this election becoming more and more about the economy, I think that climate change will again be put on the back-burner by The United States. As this video from CNN will show you, we have much bigger fish to fry them our economy...

The Poor Get The Shaft... Again

A report released just the other day reports that the poor people of the world are the most ill equip to handle the effects of climate change. So let me get this straight, while the poor people of the world are the ones who emit the least greenhouse gases, they are the ones who will be potentially destroyed by the coming effects of climate change. So while the richest countries of the world sit on their hands and watch rising greenhouse levels things are only going to get worse for these poor people around the world that can really do nothing to stop climate change... A sad world we live in indeed.

For those of you who missed it Australia just signed the Kyoto protocol leaving The United States as the only country left that hasn't yet sign-up. And I quote...

"The challenges of climate change are big, and serious. The next step is to reach agreement in Bali on a negotiating roadmap for a new post-2012 framework. We look forward to continuing to work together constructively with Australia, as we have in APEC, the Asia Pacific Partnership, and the Major Economies process," said Kristen Hellmer with the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

WTF? Why are we concentrating on post 2012? We need to be concentrating on right now... this is just typical BS from this administration who has failed us at every environmental turn...

Greenland Is Turning Green

If you have been following this blog you know that there is already overwhelming evidence that climate change is being caused by humans, yet no real action is taken here in the states on a federal level. I only hope that our next president will have a little more going on upstairs instead of change jiggling in his pocket from his oil company kickbacks...

With more and more people getting behind this movement maybe we can actually make a change before George W. Bush is out of office, but the way our government moves like a snail I kinda doubt anything will be done... sad really, but who know maybe I will be pleasantly surprised and our planet won't be doomed, but as more and more time passes I fear we have already passed the tipping point.
