I just read this in the NYT:

“Try getting in touch with people you care about and asking them to recall something that gave them joy, Dr. McGonigal said. Research shows that sharing memories enhances relationships and improves well-being. “And it’s often a wonderful way to learn about people,” she said.

So this week, rephrasing a little, reach back into the past and tell us something that gave you real joy, so much that you still remember it and smile years later.

Or you know, tell us something good that happened this week.

This Is A Good Book Thursday: Getting Carter

I sent Arresting Anna to Bob which means I won’t have to read it again for a while. I need one more crack at it, but it needs to go to the betas–apologies to the betas for all the stuff I haven’t fixed yet, feel free to yell at me about it–and I am now reading “Getting Carter,” which I should have back to Bob on Monday, if not before. It’s weird reading a book you wrote but haven’t seen for six months. At least I know how to fix this one. Nothing but good times ahead.

Good Sunday: Chris Rock

I just finished Chris Rock’s interview in the NYT, and while it was all great, this is the part I loved:

“I’m excited every morning. It’s my favorite time to get up and take my walk and get my fruit, listen to the news a little bit. ’Cause every day can be great. Even when you know what’s going to happen, you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

I think that idea is what’s been best about this week. I finally got far enough out of depression to start organizing my life, making my space livable, understanding the Anna book at the level I was clear-headed enough to get to (and making Bob insane in the process). I am gaining control over my life again. And yet . . .

There are surprises every day. Some of them are small, some are funny, some are exciting, some are sad, but no matter how well I finally get my life organized, I will not know what’s going to happen.

I love that. Infinite possibilities, some good, some bad, but you can’t value the good until you’ve experienced the bad. It’s the not knowing that makes each day interesting. “Even when you know what’s going to happen, you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

I am still trying to finish Anna, although my TBR pile has some excellent stuff in it, and it calls to me daily. Some day, I may even be able to watch TV again.

I made brownies from a box. Yeah, there will be no pictures. I also did massive writing work, but you know, I really need to make something I can look at.

Good Sunday: New Writing

The best thing that happened this week happened because of something awful several weeks ago.

Several weeks ago: My laptop died and took my latest rewrite of Anna with it.

This week: I had to write the ending again. It was the first time I’d written something from scratch, did a first draft of something, and it was wonderful to be doing that again. It felt like somebody had opened a window and the sun came streaming in.

So note to self: Never do nothing but rewriting and editing again for any length of time. Like maybe a new scene for something once a week, just to keep the Girls in the Basement from lying around, eating potato chips and losing strength.

So what good stuff happed to you this week?

I’m reading “Getting Carter,” the second story, first novella, in the ATF series. The change in my brain since the first time I wrote my stuff to now is remarkable. I can write again. (Bob’s stuff was always good.). Very happy making.
