Before zippers came along, mankind had to grapple with their arch nemesis – laces. Apart from making it extremely difficult for a hot-blooded male to relieve his consort of her extremely tight corset (which was wound with a knot that proved harder than the Gordian knot), it also proved to be rather messy when you needed it to stay in place the most. Well, the Lace-amatic could offer a dramatic solution to this age old problem, functioning as a device which acts as an instant on/off switch for walking & running shoes. With but a single wave of your finger, it is capable of tightening, knotting or undoing laced shoes – all without having to bend over. Requiring very little strength as well, it takes a minimal degree of dexterity or flexibility to operate. Seems to be available only in Canada at point of publishing though, but this is one invention which we welcome with open arms (and wounded up knots).

Want to take the truly paperless route in your home and office? Why, the PrePeat Printer could be just the thing for you. After all, it uses a new kind of technology which actually achieves “printouts” without using either ink or paper, thanks to a heat sensitive plastic sheet alongside a precision thermal head that “prints” out both gray scale text and images. The paper which it is printed on can be reused simply by feeding the sheets through the printer again, where a different temperature removes everything or rewrites over it. Of course, with most of us printing documents out simply because we want a hardcopy, the PrePeat Printer isn’t exactly cost effective with a price tag of $5,500, not to mention that each sheet of special plastic paper costs $3.30.

Amazon's first move -- referenced on the blog as its "Delete You" tactic against MacMillan titles -- even seemed a bit petulant to some observers, especially when the retailer turned around a few days later and said that it would have to capitulate to MacMillan's pricing demands.

The publishers are in a powerful position, and it may indeed hurt sales of the Kindle -- and of the publishers' own bestsellers -- if in a few weeks we find that few ebook bestsellers are available any longer at that $9.99 price that has become so popular in the Kindle Store.

But it turns out Amazon has some arrows left in its quiver.

First, it is clear now that, whatever its intentions, Amazon's "Delete You" play was very effective in educating Kindle owners about the pricing controversy that was going on behind the scenes. Among the first 1,032 respondents in the current Winter 2010 Kindle Nation Citizen Survey, 71 percent agree with this statement: "By dropping MacMillan books, Amazon took stand vs. high-priced ebooks." 11 percent disagreed with the statement, and 18 percent didn't know or didn't have an opinion.

The importance of this customer education, with its obvious subtext that "it is the publishers, not Amazon, who are behind the price increases in the Kindle Store" is that it helps to preserve a special relationship between Amazon and those of its customers who are Kindle owners. Most Kindle owners are extremely loyal customers, and we buy a lot of books. You don't just have to take my word on these matters, because they are quite evident from other data provided by respondents in our current survey:

88 percent have positive or very positive feelings about Amazon, but only 19 percent have positive or very positive feelings about the Big Six publishers.

70 percent agreed (and only 13 percent disagreed) with the statement that "Jeff Bezos & Amazon have my back, & I know they price things to sell."

33 percent said that since acquiring a Kindle they annually buy more than 30 Kindle ebooks that are priced between 99 cents and $9.99, while another 30% said they buy 15 to 30 such books.

What will Kindle owners do if the prices of bestsellers priced previous at $9.99 increase by the 30 to 50 percent threatened by the Big Six publishers? Currently, according to our respondents, only 3 percent buy 15 or more ebooks a year in the $10-and-up price range. For some customers, that will change: 37 percent agreed with the statement that "I will probably pay $10 to $14.99 for new ebook titles if necessary," while 54 percent disagreed.

But there are also some strong indications that this group of very active readers may be ready to make an interesting pivot in consumer behavior, one that may be reminiscent of changes in behavior in the audience for music and film in the past few decades. As these forms of entertainment became accessible in different formats and at different prices, and the costs of production and distribution declined, audience grew dramatically for music and movies with various forms of "indie" branding. In the current Kindle Nation survey, we found strong identification with the following statements:

With recent ebook price wars, I've become more price-conscious. 72 percent agreed, 22 per cent disagreed.

With higher bestseller prices, I'll buy more backlist or indie titles. 60 percent agreed, 21 per cent disagreed.

I'll look to buy ebooks by authors who provide Kindle exclusives. 48 percent agreed, 28 per cent disagreed.

It should come as no surprise, of course, that Amazon -- and some other forward thinkers -- are racing to keep up with, or in some cases help create a market for, changes in what we read and what is published. While Amazon is certainly not about to turn its back for long on bestsellers at whatever prices they are made available, there are some exciting channels opening up which will lead to expanded selection of unique content in the Kindle Store, including:

A high likelihood that we will soon see a significant number of bestselling or established authors eschewing agents and traditional publishers to publish their new work directly to the Kindle platform and other new technologies, as novelist Anne Rice recently hinted she might do in direct posts to an Amazon community threat that she initiated late last year.

Amazon's recent announcement that its own do-it-yourself "Digital Text Platform" will soon pay 70 per cent royalties directly to any authors who choose to publish and market their work there in the $2.99-to-$9.99 price range. Even the English majors among established and successful authors may be sufficiently able to do the math that they question whether traditional publishers do enough for their authors to justify paying royalties of only 17.5 percent (the rate authors will get under the agency pricing model upon which publishers are insisting) compared with the 70 percent rate promised by Amazon.

Authors, meanwhile, are beginning to organize to protect and advance their independent publishing interests through initiatives like the fledgling Association of Independent Authors that may inspire more and more creative work for direct publication through the Kindle platform and other new technologies.

New publishing ventures such as Rosetta Stone and Jane Friedman's Open Road Integrated Media are making a major investment in helping both established and emerging authors and their representatives to protect and assert their ownership of their digital publishing rights so that they can bring their own work to the Kindle and other platforms under more favorable terms than the 17.5% of retail list price being offered by the Big Six publishers for ebook royalties.

Recent deals by Amazon to publish a growing number of Kindle backlist exclusives or new short fiction by prominent authors such as Paulo Coelho<img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=ebest&l=ur2&o=1" style="border:medium none ! To this end, the Kindle Unique Content Specialist will: Use customer feedback, industry news/trends, and Amazon data to identify categories and genres in which unique content will add key selection, amplify Kindle’s distinctive functionally, and further enhance/add value to the Kindle customer experience.
Where will it all lead?

We'll see. We've just witnessed a strange and upside-down economic event where, in the hands of Steve Jobs and the Big Six publishers, "competition" has somehow led to higher rather than lower prices for the consumer.

What's clear is that Amazon has no intention of biding its time while the publishers and Jobs do their dirty work. As often happens when the dinosaur sector of any industry goes head-to-head with cutting-edge, forward-thinking elements, the dinosaurs may convince themselves they are winning the battles only to discover later that the outcome of the war depended on other battles about which they never heard a word until it was too late.

Publishers and authors may be trying to convince each other that they are at war with Amazon, but they have been acting like they were at war with their own readers. Readers won't stand for it, and Amazon is likely to do plenty to empower us by giving us more choices at better prices.

<gr:likingUser>15352652282963261226</gr:likingUser>

Kindle Nation Daily

When being a gamer can change a life

As gamers, we rarely get opportunities to do something for others, especially when it supports a worthwhile charity that looks after the interests of children. All of this could very well be changing with organizations such as OneBigGame.

OneBigGame is organized by volunteers and is setup to develop and create video games which they publish for charity. So from a gamer's perspective, what this means is that if you purchase a game that is published under the OneBigGame banner, your money will be given to a charity supported by the organisation. The organisation's motto is "Play, so others can can" and it's as simple as that. So buy a game and save a life.

OneBigGame was founded by Martin de Ronde who began in the industry 10 years ago. He then founded his own development studio in 1998 which was then sold to Lost Boys Games. After being renamed to 'Guerilla Games' in 2003, Martin was then commercial director and part of the team that created the PS2 game 'Killzone' for Sony Computer Entertainment. After moving on to Media Republic, Martin then founded OneBigGame in 2006.

The first game released by OneBigGame called 'Chime' is now available for download via Xbox Live for 400 Microsoft points. I will be downloading this and getting that much more out of my gaming knowing that my money will be going towards a worthy cause.

So gamers, if you ever wanted an opportunity to turn the tide on all those negative stereotypes gamers keep getting slapped with, this is a step in the right direction.

The biggest problem with this rather romantic method of air travel was that there was only so much room in the passenger area that hung underneath the inflated area.

As a result, cruising by air could never be as huge as the sea cruise business. However, this Aircruise concept could easily change that.

This diamond-shaped airship runs on hydrogen fuel cells and has a speed of 90 miles per hour. Granted, it is pretty slow compared to a jetplane, but this method of travel is ten times better than First Class.

The plan is to fill the Aircruise with bars and lounges, but I can’t help but wonder how much you can actually put on there. I believe that another part of the plan is to give the Aircruise glass floors, so this trip is definitely not for the acrophobes who don’t want to “walk on air”.

I realize that the Aircruise is one of those aircrafts that will take years, possibly even decades, to develop, but I would love to go on its maiden voyage. Let’s hope that it wouldn’t end like the Titanic’s, or it will be a cross between the White Star ship and the Hindenberg.

What the title lacks in originality, it certainly makes up for in accuracy.

Either way, now that the dust has settled and players have had the opportunity to try out this ambitious game on their own, it seems that, while the game is considered to be decent in the eyes of many FPS enthusiasts, where MAG really shines is with the MMORPG fans. Why? Well, perhaps it's because, oddly enough, MAG is the first time in recent history that anyone has successfully managed to integrate that "massive" feel into an MMO-FPS hybrid, and Zipper Interactive has done just that with great success.

Ever since SOE's Planetside, released in 2003, many development companies have attempted to tackle the problems that come with fusing MMORPG elements with the FPS genre. Some, like Hi-Rez Studios' Global Agenda, chose to lean more to the MMORPG side, focusing specifically on character progression, HP-based damage and customizable equipment. Unfortunately, GA's combat can feel quite slow in comparison to modern day shooters, like Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2, and, because Hi-Rez Studios wanted their players to feel more "involved" in the combat, characters can take significantly more damage than in a modern day shooters, to place more emphasis on teamwork. As well, the maximum number able to play on one map is limited to 20, so combatants don't feel lost in the fray.

MAG, on the other hand, has chosen to focus almost entirely upon delivering fast-paced action to as many players as possible. In "domination mode," there are 256 players split into two teams, with one team attacking and the other team defending. The teams are then split further into 32-player "platoons," which consist of four squads of eight players each. In this way, MAG does a great job of keeping players feeling like they're still part of a small unit, but they're also part of something bigger - the squad, the platoon and the team. During domination matches, each platoon gets a set of objectives to push, and the squad leaders direct their 8-person units as best as they can, to push their specific objectives. As a platoon completes its objective, it unlocks another objective further in, ultimately converging on a final point where all of the platoons should meet, provided they managed to accomplish all of their objectives.

It is here that MAG begins to make sense in the grand scheme of things. Many gamers argue that MAG's 256 player map is not really necessary because, well, since the maps are so big and the players are divided up so neatly, much of the combat feels like a simple 8v8. What they don't understand, however, is just how tactically deep MAG can get if it's being played by capable hands. You see, while platoons do have their assigned zones and objectives to take out, it's the squad leaders who set the "objective points," and if players fight within those points, they'll gain double experience. In this way, if a squad leader feels that his platoon is doing quite well, but he notices that the western offensive is getting shut down, he can simply divert his squad to the other side to lend a helping hand.

In other words, MAG doesn't shove its "massive" gaming aspect down a players' throat, demanding that they wade through 128 other units to get to a gate. Instead, MAG constantly lets its players feel they're a part of a greater scheme of things, and that connection is felt throughout each game, even if it's not so readily apparent on the screen. It's one thing to know that your comrades are fighting "somewhere else" for your cause, and it's an entirely different thing to know that you can travel across the map to assist them if they need it.

Unfortunately, while MAG may be incredibly innovative in its implementation of 256 player maps, it becomes quite obvious just how much the team has had to cut back in order to keep the game smooth and latency down. The game's artwork and detail are fairly "brown" for a current-gen game and some of the animations, like the explosion of a rocket, can get downright sparse. All of this, however, is offset by the fact that there are 256 people playing on one map, and there is no lag. This, in itself, is astonishing, and it's really only a matter of time before the graphics catch up.

Interestingly enough, MAG's second big problem actually comes from its players rather than the game itself. You see, while Zipper Interactive has made every effort to reward teamwork, communication and objective-based gameplay, it's inevitable that there will be players who just don't care. Lots of them. In reality, these gamers may very well be MAG's biggest downfall, as they will be the ones demanding easy objectives so that they can net more frags, or they will be the ones who refuse to rush a base because they want to protect their precious kill:death ratio. Even for MMO gamers, where teamwork is supposed to be second nature, we've all experienced "that guy" who decided that healing was boring, and therefore he wouldn't heal for the rest of the fight. Ultimately, Zipper Interactive designed a game with amazing potential, if played correctly, but their faith in humankind's ability to cooperate may very well be their downfall.

In the end, for MMO gamers around the world, MAG has been received as a monumental step in the right direction for the MMOFPS genre. While the game may not be "up to par" graphically, and it may need some more customization content down the line, what MAG ultimately represents is a solid foundation for any MMO developer who wants to make the next Planetside. It's definitely possible, now just improve on it!

ZAM News (full)

DISPLAX: The touchscreen wallpaper of the future

I think that we all know that the future is full of Microsoft Surface technology, and I look forward to the day when every table or desk is a touchscreen.

DISPLAX, made by a Portuguese company, is prepared for an age where every tabletop, wall, or any large flat (or even curved) surface could be a touchscreen. DISPLAX is a thinner-than-paper polymer film that can be applied to glass, plastic, or wood and can detect up to 16 touches at once.

I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to think of some good uses already. In fact, my dream house will have DISPLAX as wall-paper in every room.

That way, any wall I want can be a television, and recipes can appear on the wall in my kitchen. I would imagine that I could check my email or social media sites from any room, including the bathroom.

Okay, I am going out of my head (in a good way) thinking about all the applications for DISPLAX. So much so, I can’t even think of a bad use for it. However, there is one thing I am a bit unclear on: how does one program this screen? I mean, is there a USB port to connect to a computer, or something?

This technology feels like it is made for an era that I will never see in my lifetime. I have heard that DISPLAX will start shipping as early as July.

I have a serious reputation for being constantly frozen, which usually means the second anyone enters my house they’re burning alive. That is unless I have thought ahead and turned down the thermostat to a normal person type of temperature. For those of you that either live with someone who’s always warm or freezing this mattress will make sleeping a lot easier. It’ll allow for one side to be heated all the while the other side is keeping the other person cool.

The mattress itself can be purchased in different sizes. You can also choose dual or single zone pads. The single zones come in Twin, Twin XL, Full and Queen. The dual comes in Queen, King and California King. The difference between the two types is one allows for two different temperatures on either side of the bed and then the single only allows for one. The prices range from $399 to $499 for the single zones and $599 to $649 for the dual zones.

Why, you concoct a 3D printer (definitely not pictured) to work with it, of course! Fujifilm has just kicked out its new 3D Print System, which enables 3D photographs to be created "on the spot" using dye-sublimation technology to print directly on to the base of a lenticular sheet. Unfortunately, prints will only be available in four sizes ranging from 4- x 6-inches to 6- x 9-inches, but we're hoping that some sort of magical firmware update will enable poster-sized prints for those really looking to drive their retinas batty. Mum's the word on a price, but it should hit UK shelves by April for an undisclosed rate.
Fujifilm intros 3D Print System, which probably requires wicked expensive ink originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Feb 2010 11:46:00 EST.
Love all those old, retro games from of yore? Heck, you would most probably be sitting at your now office desk, thinking about your heydays at the local arcade, holding on to the High Score in Pac Man till today. The joys (and pains) of growing up, eh? Why not relive those moments with the Heat Changing Arcade Mugs? After all, any decent office ought to have a well-stocked pantry that has a hot pot of coffee waiting for its employees always.

Normally the Pac Boy mug displays an empty maze and the Space Intruders mug displays a blank starry sky. But add some kind of hot beverage and instantly the Pac Boy maze is filled with 8-bit style ghosts and energizers while the Space Intruders shows a retro invaders style battle in action.

At $7.99 a pop, this would make for the perfect gift for any geek in the office (including yourself).

If, like us, you've spent a fair amount of time in a kitchen cooking up a storm, then you're probably aware of one of the major drawbacks of major home-cooking... it generates a ton of waste. That's right -- up to 85 or 90 percent of a family's trash can be generated within the vicinity of the kitchen. Faltazi's concept kitchen should be interesting for just that reason -- Ekokook is designed to generate essentially zero waste. The solid waste -- things like glass -- are ground down using a hand-activated steel ball, and there's also a manual paper shredder which compacts the leftovers into small bricks. Water is stored, filtered, and reused, with waste water being used to water plants. Oh, and there's also an eco-friendly earthworm compactor in a drawer! Does it get any better? Well, there's a video after the break to check out.
Continue reading Ekokook concept kitchen's mantra: waste not, want not

Ekokook concept kitchen's mantra: waste not, want not originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 18:14:00 EST. It’s that social networking site that no one wants to visit anymore because they went straight to Facebook after they graduated high school.

I’m kidding, of course. According to my source, the Mu Space is a music player that transforms into a bed, but it really transforms into a pillow if you see it open. I’ve included an additional pic after the jump so you can see exactly how the user is supposed to use it.

As you can see, it resembles a bowling ball holder without the zipper when shut, but looks like a very flat and comfortable helmet/pillow when open. From there, the user just chills out with their tunes playing at their ears.

Right now, the Mu Space is merely a concept, so I don’t know how exactly the music gets downloaded onto the helmet, as I do not see any USB ports, mini-USB or otherwise.

I like the idea of comfortably listening to tunes without headphones, but I honestly can’t say that I have an occasion for this. After all, would you feel comfortable lying down in a coffee house or on a city street while you listen to your music in this fashion? Chances are, someone would probably come up to you and say that you are loitering.

Light Blue Optics already blew our minds up with its touchscreen-creating projector, but it looks like Displax will be the one to really turn the touchpanel into a modern day commodity. The Portugal-based company is trumpeting a new polymer film that can be stuck onto or just under glass, plastic or wood in order to transform a vanilla surface into one that responds to touch and airflow. Furthermore, the tech can be overlayed on curved panels, and it also plays nice with opaque and transparent surfaces. As the story goes, an array of nanowires embedded in the film recognizes your digits or pointed breath, and it then passes the information along to a microcontroller and software suite that transforms the inputs into reactions on your system. In its current form, the solution can detect up to 16 touch points on a 50-inch screen, and if all goes well, the first Displax-enabled wares will start shipping this July. Huzzah!
