House’s team is treating a patient – musician John Henry Giles for a secondary condition. But Dr. Marty Hamilton, the doctor under whom Foreman did his residency, is the patient’s primary physician. Now House being who he is, moves beyond his mandate and questions Hamilton’s diagnosis itself. To know what occurs next, you will have to see the episode, but it so happens that at a critical juncture, House makes a diagnosis with which no one agrees. And he is found to be right later on. This is when Foreman, talking to Cameron and Chase, comments that it wouldn’t hurt if House learnt some humility. But he is unaware that House has been listening to the whole discussion for quite some time.

Later on Foreman meets House to apologize for being rude, but also says that he said what he said because compared to House, Hamilton’s style involved a lot of humility. But House has the final word (sentence rather).

Does House have a view on the death penalty? If he has, he isn’t telling us. This episode deals with a patient who is an inmate on the death row. Since he is black, should Foreman sympathise with him? Well, he does not, as he has shown before. If he can recover from a troubled past, why should anyone else be granted special favours.

But, as the episode is coming to an end, the diagnosis is such that the man’s illness might have been one of the reasons he is on death row (a tumour that lead to an adrenaline rush, which then made him excessively violent). Here Foreman does soften up a bit (upbringing and biology are two different things according to him) and wants to go and testify in court during the man’s appeal. Does it make it all right for this man to have murdered people when scores of others manage to control their violence? This is House’s counter argument. Foreman is puzzled.
Foreman: You want him to be executed?
House: That’s not what I’m saying.
Foreman: Got an opinion?
House: Everyone’s got an opinion.

A husband and a wife, the wife suffering from a sickness which has a few possible causes and the medicine for each one can cure or kill. The decision the husband has to make is whether he trusts his wife so much so as to absolutely deny the possibility that she might have cheated on him. If he trusts her, she might die.

This is a very interesting episode with the main case being that of a black senator in the running for president of the US who collapses during one of his campaign speeches. House’s interaction with him is great in itself. But there is another parallel story going on – one with a woman having all kinds of small problems which House is sure is a normal side effect of sex. But she denies that she is having any and he goes out to prove otherwise. And he does prove it, which is when he says – “You have restored….”. But the final diagnosis is a hilarious one.

Houseism from the episode – Role Model (Season 1, Episode 17).

During one of the diagnoses, a student questions him as to why a dying man would be more concerned about his dog than the fact that he is dying. And House provides an explanation – humans will lie. They always lie. The reasons may change, but the fact does not.

Houseism from the episode – Three Stories (Season 1, Episode 21). This is one of the best episodes of the season.

Everybody lies is House’s credo. House, the maverick genius, has seen over the years that people cannot be trusted. That is what makes him a cynic, and a very interesting character.

This episode, Rebecca Adler is his patient and he is diagnosing her case with doctors Foreman and Cameron. And Foreman asks House why is it that they are not talking to the patient before diagnosing her. Is she a doctor? – House asks. No. Everybody lies. She will too. So there is no point talking to her.
