Parent and Child Adventure!

After a very successful first bushcraft course in April this year Ark in Oundle comes back with a follow up opportunity for children to spend good quality time with a parent/grandparent/sibling/uncle/auntie in the woods.

Our second Bushcraft course is on the 27^th – 28^th of August 2011 and will be led by Dave Watson. The Bushcraft trip offers parents quality time with their children, learning how to build shelter in the woods, cook on open fires and even prepare wild food for eating. This trip is for children aged 8 – 14.

Bushcraft is a great tool for building confidence and self-esteem in young people. The sense of adventure is within us all and conventional forms of education rarely meet the needs of young people who want to explore and try new things. Ark in Oundle wants to offer parents a chance to spend quality time with their children. Don’t miss the chance to experience an adventurous weekend that you will never forget. There are limited spaces so contact us now if you are interested. If you feel you are in difficulty paying for the course or if you know someone who might be let us know as financial help is available from Ark.

Bushcraft and survival based activities provide an excellent basis for helping people to understand social skills, team and personal development, as well as environmental issues. Woodland Survival Crafts offers a comprehensive range of bushcraft survival courses designed to educate, challenge and inspire the young people. Dave Watson, the founder of Woodland Survival Crafts says: “The satisfaction we get seeing people overcome fears, gain confidence, work positively with their friends and come to terms with themselves and their abilities is the real issue as far as I am concerned, but the icing on the cake is when they gain a recognised certificate.” Dave's passion for ancient survival skills, or bushcraft as it has become known, led him to create Woodland Survival Crafts in 1995. The Pit Stop camping weekend

This weekend the Pit Stop Crew ventured North to the Peaks for a weekend of fun, adventure and games. Accompanied by wonderful teens from the Pit Stop all loaded with their own unique sense of humour,we had a lot of fun. We all survived and hopefully came home slightly stronger people, knowing we had overcome any of many challenges - from climbing mountains to understanding someone else to putting up a tent. We all need a good nights sleep now, but most of us can't wait to pack up and go off again.

If you are interested in joining us as a volunteer or a happy camper, come along to The Pit Stop on Friday nights at the Rec in Oundle or contact Ark in Oundle.

Our long expected Bushcraft weekend was a complete success.

The weather was on our side for the whole weekend and the volunteers did a great job making this event a perfect outdoor sleep over.

We wish to thank Dave Watson and his team at Woodland Survival Crafts for their commitment for the outdoors and teaching survival skills.

Also thanks to Nic Shaw, Hannah Davies and Thomas Bletsoe who worked to make sure everyone has a good time and many thanks to all of you who joined us at Spring Wood, Derbyshire.

We are looking forward to new similar events in the future.

Ark in Oundle Bushcraft: Father and Child adventure

In this busy and demanding world, many things get in the way of Fathers being able to spend time with their children. At Ark in Oundle we recognize that and would like to give Fathers the opportunity to take their children away to Derbyshire for a night's stay in the woods.

Our first Bushcraft session is on the 2nd-3rd of April 2011 and will be led by Dave Watson. The Bushcraft trip offers Fathers quality time with their children, learning how to build shelter in the woods, cook on open fires and even prepare wild food for eating.

This trip is for Fathers and and their children aged 8-14 and is an opportunity for Fathers to learn together with their child some ancient survival skills. Bushcraft is a great tool for building confidence and self-esteem in young people. The sense of adventure is within us all and conventional forms of education rarely meet the needs of young people who want to explore and try new things. Ark in Oundle wants to offer Fathers a chance to experience an adventurous weekend that you will never forget. There are limited spaces so contact us now if you are interested. The course lasts for 24 hours, with a sleep over in shelters built by you in the woods.

The key subjects covered are:

Safety and Hygiene
Shelter construction
Cooking on open fires
String making
Friction Fire lighting
Wild food identification and preparation

As you may know by now our Basketball taster sessions are at Oundle School Sport Centre every Friday evening 7pm - 9pm. However, what you may not know is that this Friday, 26/11, we have our first match of the season. So if you want to play or cheer for your favourites you're more than welcome to come.

You never played basketball? why not start now! if you want to give it a try and you are between 12 - 16 years old then hurry up as our last session this year is on December 10.

The Rat Race by Erik

Team Ark hit the streets of London! Erik wrote this to sum up the weekend's event:

'Adventure Racing' is written on Ark in Oundle's van and this is what 6 members of the Pit Stop team did last Saturday in London!
The RAT RACE! - 4th edition in London, 30th overall.
They wrote 'urban adventure challenge event that turns cities into high-adrnaline adventure playgrounds'... for us it was the greatest team bonding experience eveeer!
We left Oundle at 11am, jumped on the tube at High Barnet and got in the event village by London Bridge just before 2pm. The Rat Race course was kept secret until a few hours before the race. At registration we were given a map and directions to the check points and then the 'points rush' began.
Running, rolling and jumping in search for check points. Some of the things we had to do were
find Silvester Stalone's hands in Leicester Square
eat salty and sandy cockles
sing and dance the 'macarena' in the middle of the street.
All of these were on the streets of one of the busiest cities in the world. They were right when they said 'expect the unexpected!'
Overall is was a great experience, and I think that all of us want to do it again next year. Maybe next year we could go for the whole weekend!

The Rat Race

This weekend 6 members of 'The Pit Stop' team will be travelling down to London to take part in The Rat Race!!

If you are wondering what The Rat Race is... and why the team are so excited about it... well... it is an urban adventure challenge event that turns cities into high-adrfenaline adventure playgrounds!

We will be splitting into two groups of three and will hike, bike, abseil, climb, kayak and navigate our way around the streets, structues, waterways and urban landscapes of London.

We will be doing a three-hour Mean Streets event on Saturday evening, covering up to 10km on foot. We will be hunting out adventure challenges set around the city centre which range from the physical to the funny to the downright surreal!

I know what your thinking... we're mad! Yes, we are and we'll take lots of photographs so stay tuned!
