A Brief History of Oakland-Fraternal Cemeteries

Oakland-Fraternal Cemeteries will celebrate their 150th birthday in
2013. They have seen over 35,000 burials during this time. A short
walk through the narrow streets built for horse and buggy shows the many names carved in stone that have built Little Rock into the city it is today. The stories of the people interred at the Cemeteries are diverse.
Stories of triumph and tragedy, stories of politicians and
soldiers, merchants and former slaves, doctors and suffragettes,
educators and immigrants and Jews and Christians. Additionally over 10,000 unique monuments and sculptures fill the 60 plus-acre grounds.
From the grand monuments of towering obelisks and ornate mausoleums to the small meek headstones of the children who died too young, Oakland-Fraternal Cemeteries are a reflection on the city and its history.
They have always been city cemeteries for the rich and the
poor, for Governors as well as paupers.

Lakresha Diaz has been involved in the history of the cemeteries for nearly three years beginning with an internship through UALR Non- Profit Management and Anthropology departments. Her research contributed to the successful nomination for the cemeteries to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The most recent project at the cemeteries is a self-guided tour that is accessed through visitor's own cell phones. Through this free program visitors can listen to many interesting stories of Arkansans. Mrs. Diaz has a bachelors of Arts from UALR.

Walnut Ridge developed in the early 1870s after the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railroad announced its plans to construct a line through the eastern part of Lawrence County. Because of its location between Crowley’s Ridge and the Ozark Mountains, a wide variety of crops were grown in Lawrence County, including cotton, corn, wheat, vegetables, and fruits. Vast forests of oak, hickory, cypress, and walnut were also harvested. Walnut Ridge became a regional shipping center for these agricultural and timber products. The town’s population declined during the Great Depression, but Walnut Ridge experienced a second boom in the early 1940s after the U.S. Army built an air field nearby. The Walnut Ridge Army Air Field employed civilians in every job except military training until the end of World War II and serves as a municipal airport today. The tour group will meet at the Missouri-Pacific Depot at 109 SW Front Street. Downtown Walnut Ridge is the tour’s co-sponsor.

In the “Walks Through History” program, AHPP historians each month provide free guided walking tours of historic structures and districts across Arkansas. The tours all begin at 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

Other 2011 “Walks Through History” tours will be held September 17, West Memphis Commercial Historic District, co-sponsored by Main Street West Memphis; October 15, Historic Arkansas City, co-sponsored by the Desha County Historical Society; November 12, Couchwood Historic District, co-sponsored by the Garland County Historical Society, and December 10, Van Buren Historic District, co-sponsored by the Van Buren Historic District Commission, the Van Buren Advertising and Promotion Commission and Fairview Cemetery.

All tours are free and open to the public. For information, call the AHPP at (501) 324-9880, write the agency at 1500 Tower Building, 323 Center St., Little Rock, AR 72201, send an e-mail message to info@arkansaspreservation.org, or visit www.arkansaspreservation.org.

The AHPP is the Department of Arkansas Heritage agency responsible for identifying, evaluating, registering and preserving the state’s cultural resources. Other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Old State House Museum, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and the Historic Arkansas Museum.

Titled “A Nation Divided: Arkansas and the Civil War,” the site presents a wealth of information on our state’s role in its most trying conflict. The site, which has been sanctioned by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, provides easy accessibility to the Butler Center’s vast Civil War–related holdings. Of primary interest to researchers will be the large number of manuscript collection finding aids posted to the site. The finding aids, which serve as gateways to the collections, are divided into Union and Confederate sources and provide detailed descriptions as to the contents of each collection. Within the collections, researchers will find hundreds of letters, diaries, official documents, and photographs. In addition, a number of the primary materials have been digitized and placed in the site’s digital gallery. Now, Arkansas’s citizens as well as people from around the world will be able to quickly and easily view historical documents and photographs related to Arkansas’s role in the Civil War. Two of the first collections to be digitized provide information on greatly under-studied topics of the war: African American involvement and Arkansas’s Unionists. In conjunction with the annual themes developed by the Sesquicentennial Commission, we have also posted material related to the remembrance of the war in Arkansas. Other Civil War–focused resources on the site include lesson plans for teachers; lists of books, photographs, and microfilm available in our research room in the Arkansas Studies Institute; and information on the numerous online databases that we subscribe to. It is our hope that the website will not only spur research into new areas of Arkansas’s past, but that it will also broaden our overall understanding of the war and its effect on our state. The Old State House Museum, located in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas, is planning an exhibit entitled An Enduring Union.
It is slated to open April 23, 2011 and run to March 2012. The exhibit will focus on why Arkansas commemorates her Civil War veterans and will feature artifacts, photographs from the museum’s collection, a video, and an accompanying exhibit brochure. The public will be able to view the photographs and artifacts on the museum.

The curator, Jo Ellen Maack, needs the public’s help with the exhibit. She is looking for artifacts and/or images relating to Confederate and Union veteran reunions in Arkansas. Any items you might donate or loan to the Old State House Museum would be appreciated. In addition to including photographs in the exhibit and all exhibit related publications, your permission would be needed for the photographs to be used in any educational resources created for the exhibit.

Those materials are made free to the public and may include, but are not limited
to interpretive brochures, lesson plans, loan boxes and other teacher resources. Any additional resources you could provide would help the museum convey a better understanding of Arkansas’s role in the Civil War and commemorate its participants.

The Old State House Museum is an American Association of Museums-accredited institution. The museum’s primary focus is Arkansas’s political history due to the fact that the building was the state’s first capitol.
Changing exhibits, each on view for about two years, focus on a variety of topics in Arkansas’s history.
If you have questions contact Jo Ellen Maack, Curator, at 501-324-8637 or email joellen@arkansasheritage.org
