The Gene Generation out on DVD now!

Finally, I can put an end to one era and focus on another. I've been on Gene Generation for the past 3 years and has it been a grueling journey. Finally, Lionsgate has put out The Gene Generation and you can buy it on any major retail stores or you can get it from Amazon.com. Click here to buy it.

You can see some of the special features from my within my website and take a look at roughly how The Gene Generation looks like. I particularly like the Commentaries as it really reminds me of the fun I had on set with the actors and their different personalities. Makes me miss them like hell even though they are only a phone call away. It's funny, but in the end, you really bond together with the people you work with. Especially on a film project, everything is intensified. Emotions, both love and frustration play a key role in your relationship together.

I hope to one day make another project with them, they have been a ton of fun. And while I continue finishing up Necromentia, The Gene Generation will always have a special place in my heart. Love everyone of you!

Appetite for Destruction

Everybody needs a hobby. Some people ask what do I really do in my spare time? Well, the answer is really hard to say because I spend my time doing a little this and a little that. With shooting only 2 weeks away, I gave myself a little 3 hour break from the madness and went to design for myself a Lego flamethrower. So so cool. The NXT should be able to control the pull back which should be attached to a release valve at the end spraying out fiery destruction! I figure I'm going to have to superglue the parts and attach some sort of metal lining at the end to prevent the legos from burning. Now the trick would be to tie up the NXT unit into a sensor and leave the flamethrower outside my house. This would surprise anybody who trips on the motion sensor, setting off the NXT and hence setting off the Flame Thrower. Imagine that, going to the cops and go 'Well, this Lego Flamethrower kinda came out of nowhere and attacked me'. Brilliant! I think after my shoot, I shall go ahead and built the rest. But for now, I'll order the Lego parts now that I know what I'm going to get and built it for an ornament for my house. Whoopee! Now.. BACK TO WORK!

Savings in Circuit City... What a laugh!

Well, I was surfing to see if I could buy for my son a game for his birthday which is about a month and a half away and lo and behold, I see Rock Band 2. I think what's funny (it's from circuit city website) that the price is 9999.99 and for a special savings of 9810.00, I get to buy it for 189.99. Hahaha. I thought it was hilarious seeing it so I HAD to take a screen capture. Thank god I did, only moments after I did, the website corrected the mistake.

I think it's funny how corporate people can 'try' to make their product and their savings look good. Oh well, I had my little laugh. It's back to editing for me. I'm editing the special features on The Gene Generation DVD. Not that the guys at Lionsgate couldn't do it, but I'm just very picky about the way things look on it. So I decided to edit it myself. God, I hate work that is basically brain dead. But what can I do... sometimes OCD is a curse more than a blessing although I have found more blessings for it in my work.

Blog of Death

Seems like this is the blog of death. I just found out from my sister that our dog, Yoshi, died today after 10 years. He's had a long and good life. What sucks is that he is in Singapore and I'm in Los Angeles and there's nothing I can do about it. Really, there's nothing much to say. People and pets are dropping all around me like flies. It's almost like I feel jinxed and people should stay away from me.

A dog dying can be a painful thing. Sometimes I feel more affectionate towards animals than people. People tend to stink. Animals never talk back to you. They always give you unconditional love. Hell, this dog was there for me through my most troubling times. He would scratch at my door just to jump in and cuddle up with me. Oh yeah, he's needy, but in a good way. People suck, dogs rule.

Looking for a Crew

Right, so I'm about to go crazy if I don't shoot here. I'm planning together another short just to keep my skills up. If I go stagnant without making a film and just staying in development, I'll be screwed. So I'm as of right now, looking for a crew for this short.

My first and most important thing I need is a Special FX Makeup artist. I can't put down anything more than 4,000 to create the special FX for the demon, so if anybody can do something real cheaply, whether it be using past molds and creating a hybrid out of it, let's talk.

I'm beginning to look for interns now (non paying), so those who you have asked at one point, here is the offer out. Just go to my 'Social' page on www.pearryteo.com and contact me from there so I can start to build my list up. You'll be attached to pre and post production if you're from Los Angeles, and in production if you can make it to Tucson.

I'm currently working with my DPs and Production Designers so those jobs are pretty much out. What is the title of the production? I have no clue what to call it yet. Just want to do something. I got a script but no title. Hahahahaha

RIP: Glen Tackett (Dear Friend and Colleague)

My dear friend Glen Tackett passed away last night. As far as I know, he went into cardiac arrest and died shortly after. He previously had congestive heart failure and went for stem cell therapy early in the year. It was a shock to me because the last time we left, he was healthy and happy.

Glen Tackett is the executive producer for Necromentia and has been not only one of the best producers I worked with, but greatest friend I had. The Ouija Board tattoo on my stomach was donated by him through his Enchanted Dragon Tattoo shop. He was by far one of the few producers who had faith in me and gave me full creative control and final cut in my films.

Glen Tackett has previously produced (now available on Blockbuster) Flight of the Living Dead and was working on his next film before he passed away. I will continue to visit his family and make sure they have their support from me. But for the time being, it's another good man gone from this world and like Chad has said 'Fuck You World!'

Necromentia will be dedicated to him. I just feel like it's not enough. This man's life is a testimony of what I represent. Fight for what you believe till the last breath.

Making the DVD

Let's face it. Making a DVD has never been easier these days. With software like iDVD and Toast, it's pretty much drag and drop. But making The Gene Generation DVD was much harder. Hell, I've never spend days (and sleepless nights) just preparing the material for the right encoding for any DVD.

Possible things to expect in the DVD are deleted scenes (which you can see some on my site), concept art, Storyboards, a digital copy of the comic books, intervews, making of documentary, and also a cyberpunk documentary made by an up and coming filmmaker Laszlo Kovacs (or whatever his name is spelled as :P)

Of course, the Cyberpunk documentary is awaiting all the clearances, which shouldn't be a problem since I owned the rights to the songs. Just have to make sure Combichrist and co. know that it's also for a documentary and not just the movie. While he is a friend of mine, paperwork is paperwork and probably the thing I hate most about the filmmaking process.

So, I'm off in 20 mins to deliver the assets to the company and start discussing about the DVD. Lionsgate has already got us on the January 9th release date for the DVD, but we will also be having a limited theatrical release. I'll worry about that later. Going to meet Rutger Hauer and then get some sleep.

"Pitchers" A Premier by Aaron Denenberg

Went to a colleague of mine, the writer of Dark Oz's directorial debut (into the world of digital video) feature film, "Pitchers". The premise is simple, 5 starving writers gather together to practice pitching on themselves before they tackle those Hollywood Executives. The results, hilarious and horrible pitches that prove why it takes more than just a creative mind to get your foot in the door for Hollywood.

While my experience with Hollywood is only limited to after shooting The Gene Generation (which is about one year), I find a lot of stuff to be true in this case. While people tend to slam Hollywood Executives for being narrow-minded, silly, stupid, 'don't know talent when they see it', it's also refreshing to see another take on it. A take of deluded people who are the very same product they blame Hollywood for.

Let's face it. We all have ideas, most of them are bad. On average, I get one good idea for every 100 crap ideas. I just keep quiet about it until I figure out what I want to do. For me, what quarantines an idea that is good, is if there is a message or morale to the story that I HAVE to say, regardless of what happens. Is this idea of mine worth ending a career. Am I willing to give up a whole career if I made a bad film but believe in it? If the answer is yes, then off I go developing that idea.

Any filmmakers out there who want to share their take on 'What would quarantine them to make a film?'

Another dissatisfied customer...

One of the painful process of filmmaking has been consistently been the writing process for me. Sure, I work with a bunch of talented writers but there are times when I have to sit down and write out a scene. Perhaps what is frustrating is trying to describe what is in my head and put it down on my paper. I know what the walls look like, I know what tone of maroon the blood is going to be, I know how rusty the chain is. But WHO THE HELL CARES!

So sitting down and having to censor my own thoughts is perhaps cruel even for myself. Which explains why I hate the writing process. I'm a coward because I hate the feeling of knowing you don't have the time or place to describe your world in detail. Just get the story out, that is the point of the script and later on, the production designer / DP will help you create those worlds.

But the world is in my head now and the trick is getting it out. I so badly want to share with everybody what is in my head. And what's frustrating, is that all that has to be put on hold until a project greenlights. God, this is maddening.

I feel if I don't stop now, I'll be on the verge of going crazy. I need some therapy. The winds should pick up this weekend, and I can go fly my new kite! Oh yeah, the reason why that picture is up is because I'm talking about my experiences writing the rest of Necromentia, and that's the concept art for it.

2. A soft-porn version of occular penetration... aka Skull Fucking

Right, I totally ripped these images off, for the fact that none of my friends would let me take a photo of me performing occulingus on them, neither would they do it on me. Or trust me, I would do it. *Note to self: Make new friends*

But I'm sure some readers out there would totally think looks fun huh. I mean, our eyes blink because we need lubrication, I think this is a totally natural act. Other than the fact it looks funny as hell. I've been told it taste like saline which sent me running into the bathroom and trying some. Mmmm... I've had better things, but it's still safe... right... right... *collapses on floor*

Guide to making your Zombies: Part 1

I recently had a talk with one of my doctor friends who introduced me to a new type of parasite called "Naegleria". It is found in warm freshwater and soil but guess what, it can live in the brains! Naegleria infects people by entering the body through the nose, but it won't happen as a result of drinking. BUMMER!

Now the only thing stopping me from actually writing my first DIY Zombie book is coming up with a way of actually getting it into people's brain. But enough of me! Today's topic is about Naegleria. This parasite can travel up the nose to the brain and spinal cord where it destroys the brain tissue. Hence, the real steps are going to be 1) Getting it into the brain 2) Not totally killing the host and leaving it a mindless brain eaten zombie... sah-weet!

Research has shown that Naegleria can be found in CA and AZ too, near where I'm at. Although details are vague, I guess I have to find a place where there's stagnant warm or hot water. Hot springs? Lakes? Rivers?

I don't have long! Summer is almost over so I'm doing this quick and rounding up a bunch of people to find some Naegleria with me. Then I'll get Mr. Rogers to do a foreward for my DIY Zombie book otherwise I'll kill his whole family. Life is grand!

.p.s. The look like little cute sperms as well. I'm just one step closer to Post Apocalyptic destruction!

Movie Review: Tropic Thunder

I don't go out to movie theatres much (yeah, surprised aren't you) but I decided for some weird reason to go out and watch Tropic Thunder. Partially because Glenn Dion told me that Tom Cruise was in it playing a very different role and cameos by Tobey Maguire and co. are done very well.

I'm completely surprised by how this movie has made me laugh my ass off. Robert Downey Jr., I can't say much about him because he's always talented and this film is no different. Various moments that he pulled off was sheer brilliance. Between Ironman and Tropic Thunder, this guy's got a good year alright.

But for me, Tom Cruise stole the show playing the evil executive. Not only was his insane scientology character oozing with madness all around, it was just downright funny! And the fact that Tom Cruise broke out of character to play a balding guy makes him cool in my books. Hey, who am I to judge his life, but I really enjoy his movies and can't wait for Brian Singer's Valkyrie which is coming out later this year where he plays a Nazi.

With big explosions and great FX, I strongly suggest this movie to be watched in a theatre. The home theatre experience won't be as magnificent and 'bad bad' if you are torrent downloading it :P

So that men can be oversexed herigans

The face of the Resistance, Rachel is adept in Martial arts and utilizes whip smart thinking to design weapons from any material available to her. she is not only agile but physically strong and bears wisdon beyond her years. Although Rachel despises violence and killing, she still gets a thrill from taking on the Guardians of Exsilium.

Rachel was the first character I designed for the script Deus Ex Machina. I think people have remarked about my love for kick ass female characters but I prefer to look at it more as a staple. I find men equally intriguing when they try to outdo females. So creating a strong female character automatically (for me) raises the bench mark (not stakes) of the movie.

I also prefer female characters over men. They seem more 3-dimensional at many times. While they might smart, agile, strong, having a female character also allows me to explore the heart a little bit more. I like how females accept what is in the heart more than men, but then again, there's more to grow and learn by having a male lead. Well, usually, I have both, but I like to start with a female :P

Infections from inspirations

Finally got to revamping my site which took some time (as most things I obsess in usually do). I guess I want to credit my main source of inspiration to a Script that I read based on a Comic Book called 'The Scribbler'.

Probably the most cerebral script I read, it was literally Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on Acid, throw in a little bit of 'The Cell', 'Tool Music Videos (or Brothers Quay) and a hint of Jan Svanmajer, and that's just the icing of it.

It's always nice to be able to read a good script. It's like an assurance out there that people have talent and producers have taste. I always get the 'All movies are crap out there' talk from friends, and it's nice to finally read something that I could say 'Heck No. If this movie was made...'. I think people take it for granted and despise the way a studio system works. I honestly think it's just due to a lack of understanding of the dynamics of a system like that. A lot of people care, maybe too many people care... too many cooks can spoil a broth.

Credit is given to my business partner, Chad Michael Ward for helping me and providing the images that you see inside. His disgusting talent always makes me cringe with envy... heh heh.

Flying high on stress-relief

Everybody has their little stress free moments. I have my moments too. I love flying kites. Today was a little bit different, I was flying a kite in a thunderstorm, or at least, an upcoming thunderstorm.

To see something beautiful, so free, up in the air, really gives my heart a symphony to play with. Rarely have I felt such peace and beauty and transcendence as when I'm flying my kite. Nobody disturbs me, this is my peace.

The winds of the thunderstorm thug on my strings. It's almost as if I could feel nature coursing through the kite, through the strings, into my hands. There was some weird part of me that hoped for a lightning to strike my kite, but I was not conducted enough to be affected. Perhaps next time I will fly a metal kite. My kid was with me, he got a little freaked out by the lightning and thunder all around. But I assured him that he is safe and only nature being what it is.

Ah, I cannot wait for the monsoon. How fun it will be!

The Gene Generation

I've never talked much about The Gene Generation premier. Maybe it's because I merely went in and out like a college girl on prom night.

Our premier was held in Arizona, half the reason because it's my home town, and half the reason because I wanted to prove to the teachers that kicking me out of school was not an indication whether I would succeed in my career at all (which is something they have been very adamant about telling me for some reasons)

It was pretty much fun and games for everyone. For me, perhaps one of the scariest times of my life. Premiers, for me, have a similar poetry to Dante's The Divine Comedy. What starts of as heaven and a sense of accomplishments always veers towards purgatory and hell. See, I can't see or watch my movie in front of crowd of thousands. It just stresses me out too much. Every movie you do is a baby, it is a intense part of your soul that you give for the sake of entertainment. It wasn't until I started making movies that I knew what freaks and geeks felt like in a circus side-show.

But try sitting there and watching the crowd react towards your soul. Sometimes even a tickle hurts. Sometimes I interpret it wrong (according to my friends). Maybe I'm just too sensitive, but that's the reason why I seldom look at my name on google. What used to be fun when I was young is now a scary prospect to see how much people might hate me.

Go figure. That's the life of a filmmaker.... well, for me anyways...

DNA Hacker Chronicles

The second issue for The DNA Hacker Chronicles is out. From here in out, you can count that the storyline goes into a completely new direction from the The Gene Generation.

We've introduced news enemies, one of the them being a Death Charger (Mutated Freaks). It's fun doing comics in a sense you don't have to worry about budget and figure out how the hell you are going to shoot such and such.

While the artwork has gotten a tad cleaner (less blood and grunge) from the previous issue, I have to say I'm pretty pleased with it. Will be at Comicon to promote the first and second issue so if you are there, be sure to come up and say hi to me. It can get awfully boring at the Bloodfire booth for a split second because everyone is working and not that it is bad, except I wish I could be celebrating my b'day like a normal human being, but hey... I can't complain if I'm working, can I?

More on where I will be in Comicon (San Diego). I think it will be a blast and tons of fun :)
