A smooth transition with Northwood franchise

A smooth transition with Northwood franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Clarke Boulter
Northwood, York

Since he left the Royal Marines in 2006, Clarke Boulter has gone on to build a thriving business with letting and estate agency franchise Northwood. I really enjoy running my own business, enthuses Clarke. Becoming my own boss has been a steep learning curve, however with the ongoing support from Northwood the transition from military personnel to civilian has gone smoothly and I have continued to increase my turnover by 50 per cent year-on-year.

I decided to leave the Royal Marines after 18 years of service because I wanted to spend more time with my family. Throughout my career, I went on tour to Afghanistan and Iraq, which meant I was away from my family for up to nine months at a time.

As I did not have a specific trade and had always liked the idea of running my own business I decided to look into franchising. I liked the fact I would have the safety net of a tried and tested business model and access to ongoing training and support, which would ensure I would be able to run the business on my own effectively.

I was looking for a franchise with growth potential and Northwood ticked all the right boxes because it was property-based and had a unique product- its Platinum guaranteed rental income scheme. I joined the Northwood network in September 2006 and my territory covers York and the surrounding area.

I have had a positive experience as a Northwood franchise owner. The six-week training course covered everything I needed to know, while the support has been excellent. We organise regional meetings on a regular basis to brainstorm ideas, have an online forum and can contact head office if we have any problems.

As my own boss, I feel empowered- I make the decisions, have control of my work/life balance and my earning potential, which is a refreshing change from the structure and regimented life I led in the Royal Marines.

A force to be reckoned with Martin & Co franchisees

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchisees with the UKs largest lettings agency, Martin & Co, come from a range of backgrounds. But a surprisingly large number join the Martin & Co network after having served in the Armed Forces. And they say that the franchise model is a big help in making the step from military life to the world of business.

Take Gareth Glover (left). who is now joint Managing Director of Martin & Co, Truro with his wife Wendy. However for ten years from the age of 16 he served with the Army, with tours of duty including Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Germany, Cyprus and the first Gulf War. He was also an instructor in fieldcraft and use of weapons.

Gareth said: You learn a lot of man management skills in the forces which is very helpful later on. I have also found the discipline of setting objectives and working out how to achieve them a vital aid in business life.

The ability to communicate and make yourself understood and patience are two other qualities that Gareth believes he brought from his decade in the Army.

He added: I always find it helps to mention to clients that I have a military background. I think it offers a sense of authority and reassurance that they are in safe hands and that I wont let them down. The public has a huge respect for the Armed Forces and what they do.

Cen Draper, 37, was in the Royal Marines from 1988 to 1996. He was based in Plymouth, Taunton and Poole and also had tours in the first Gulf War in 1991, Bosnia and Northern Ireland. He purchased the Exeter office in 2006 and has more recently expanded into new shop front premises.

Cen said: The military have proven systems that work and its the same principle with franchising. You follow the system but within that you have to think on your feet, adapt to changing situations and use your initiative.

He added: I joined the Royal Marines because I wanted to be the best soldier in the world and I joined Martin & Co because I wanted to offer the best lettings service I could possibly deliver.

Gas and electrical inspection franchise provides the answer

Gas and electrical inspection franchise provides the answer

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Having spent 25 years in the Royal Air Force as an electronics engineer, Ian Kavanagh from Telford in Shropshire left the service at 44 years of age and bought a gas-elec franchise.

I had been researching different franchising opportunities for several years as I wanted to be my own boss when I left the Air Force. Whilst on detachment in Kuwait I came across gas-elec, which carried out engineering inspections required by law. So I set up to meet with the gas-elec team while on R&R, and put my notice in on my return. The rest, as they say, is history, says Ian.

Ian chose the franchise route as they have a proven business model, which gives a far greater chance of success, as well as providing the back up and support so necessary for any new business venture.

gas-elec was launched as a franchise in 1997 to provide gas and electrical safety inspections in the residential lettings sector. The business has grown rapidly into a national network of successful regional managers and local engineers. Today there are over 126 franchisees operating from 18 regional offices.

I slotted into the business from day one, which was partly because I was keen, but largely because the franchisor held my hand until I was ready to go it alone. The first year was a steep learning curve and the priority was to turn a declining area into a growing one and to rebuild gas-elecs reputation. This I achieved with a great deal of co-operation from the engineers and guidance from the franchisor everyone works as a team and strives for the common good.

Ian has had the franchise since September 2004 and by year four had doubled the first years sales. While it wasnt all plain sailing, its gratifying to see the results for your efforts. Its all about providing an excellent reliable service, at a fair price, and naturally reaping the financial rewards that hard work deserves.

Ians business has grown in value by the equivalent of an extra 1k for each month he has been with gas-elec. I intend to continue that growth and need quality engineers with the right attitude to enable me to do so. gas-elec is an excellent opportunity for people leaving the forces to generate a good level of income, where they have stability, and are rewarded financially for their efforts, without having to spend long stints away on detachment leaving worried loved ones behind.

In spite of real challenges during 2008 and 2009, the growth of the network has continued to be healthy, although recruitment has continued at a slower pace than before, due partly to lack of finance in the current climate.

The franchisor is actively seeking and developing new revenue streams for the franchisees and recently embraced new technology, investing large sums in increasingly sophisticated systems to create an internal and customer facing IT infrastructure that greatly benefits the business.

This saves huge amounts of time and allows us to react instantly to customer and engineer enquiries, to analyse customer data and convert this into sales and marketing opportunities, concludes Ian.

Later this year, Ian will be renewing his franchise agreement with gas-elec for a further five years, and wont hesitate to sign on the dotted line.

About the franchise

The gas-elec franchise is a two-tier franchise whereby a regional management franchisee markets the business and obtains work for the gas-elec safety inspectors in his or her area. Ongoing business support for all franchisees includes sales and marketing, appointment making, centralised invoicing and credit control, bookkeeping and IT support.

The facts:

gas-elec safety inspection franchisees are qualified to inspect both gas and electrical equipment in one visit and to carry out minor remedial works.
gas-elec electrical safety inspection franchisees are qualified electricians who carry out higher end electrical and remedial works including Part P.
gas-elec regional management franchisees market the business and generate work for the safety inspection franchisees who carry out the work.

gas-elec training and support

All technical training is carried out in gas-elecs own award-winning City & Guilds and CITB assessment centres. Training is modular and all prospective franchisees have a free of charge pre assessment to assess their skills before joining the business, to determine the length and cost of your training. The company is also ISO 9001 quality assured, NICEIC, Gas Safe Register and ELESCA.

Today, gas-elec has over 126 franchisees operating from 18 regional offices across the United Kingdom.

A tasty new direction with a Domino's Pizza franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Colin Tomlin is a great example of a Dominos franchisee who chose to take his career in a new and tasty direction after 25 years in the Navy.

Colin had always wanted to be his own boss and leaving the Navy gave him an opportunity to do just that. Having attended a franchise exhibition, he drew up a shortlist of the businesses he was most interested in and narrowed it down based on each franchises figures and feasibility. I chose Dominos as it offered the greatest potential financial rewards and future opportunities, Colin explained.

Having completed Dominos franchise development programme and with the support of the head office team, Colin opened his first store in Chesterfield in 2004. I built up vast range of skills during my time in the Navy, which were easily transferable to my business, said Colin. The management and leadership training I received was second to none and has been very useful in running my Dominos stores. The Navy taught me the importance of fun, humour and camaraderie, which I try to maintain among my team. Team building activities I learnt have also been extremely useful and have helped me to achieve excellent staff retention rates.

Following the success of his first store, Colin took on his second in Worksop earlier this year and has not looked back since leaving the Navy. He said: Franchising is ideal for people like me, who want a change of career and all the benefits of running your own business. My Dominos franchise gives me the flexibility to work around family commitments, while running my own successful business, which is something Id always wanted to do.

Owning my own business is everything I hoped it would be. Im working towards a goal of five to seven stores in total thatll be enough for at least one for each of my sons and me!

Fulfilling his dream with Gas-Elec franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

With his experience as a skilled Royal Navy technician, Paul Cordingly has proved to be an ideal candidate to own a gas-elec Safety Inspection Franchise.

Paul spent 14 years sailing the world in frigates, but today youll find him in a van around the West Midlands helping to ensure that people doesnt asphyxiate or electrocute themselves with unsafe or incorrectly-installed gas and electrical equipment!

Under legislation that came into effect a few years ago all gas and electrical appliances and installations in UK rented properties must be checked once a year and certified safe.

We make use of the latest gas analysers, appliance testers and installation equipment to ensure that systems are safe, says Paul.

Not surprisingly, safety inspections are now big business and gas-elec celebrates its 14th anniversary with an impressive stronghold across the industry: 130 franchisees operating from 18 regional offices. Founded by managing director John Davidson, gas-elec pioneered combined gas and electricity safety inspections in the UK residential lettings market and now carries out more than 130,000 inspections a year as part of government safety regulations for rented properties.

Its a business thats driven by the law, requiring annual inspections in a variety of sectors. We provide thousands of safety inspections for landlords, managing agents, homeowners, buyers and sellers, says John.

It was in the mid-1990s that John, a qualified electrical engineer, first realised the potential offered by the gas and electrical safety regulations, designed to improve standards in the residential lettings sector. His plan was revolutionary, but simple: one specially-trained engineer to do both gas and electricity inspections in one visit, saving time, money and hassle.

Leaving the navy some ten years ago, Paul was anxious to work independently and looked for a franchise in which he could use his technical expertise.

I went to a franchise exhibition and returned with four carrier bags full of stuff, but only gas-elec seemed to tick all the boxes. My navy experience of working on everything from hydraulics and air conditioning to electronics and gas turbines gave me plenty of qualifications and a really good basic knowledge to bring to the gas-elec franchise, adds Paul.

gas-elec has a long-established reputation with clients who know that they can depend on the impartiality of the reports. They also know that the business offers competitive deals, such as the recently launched gas-elecs g-warm Scrappage+. Over and above customers receiving 400 from the governments boiler scrappage scheme when they exchange a G rated boiler for an A rated boiler, gas-elec will give an additional 400 to any customer that exchanges their boiler through the company. Thats a massive saving of 800!

The gas-elec franchise is a two-tier franchise with regional management franchisees and safety inspection working together in partnership in their various areas. Ongoing business support for all franchisees includes sales and marketing, appointment making, centralised invoicing and credit control, bookkeeping and IT support.

Achieving his driving ambition with Chipsaway franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Andy will be celebrating his wedding in time honoured fashion, but to mark his ten year business anniversary he will be launching a new ChipsAway CarCare Centre, and opening an exciting new chapter in his super successful career as a franchisee.

It was Andys love of cars that first drew him to ChipsAway, the market leading specialist in minor automotive paintwork repairs. His ambition was to make serious money and to own a sexy sports car; so a franchise that would enable him to work with cars all day long, whilst providing the opportunity to achieve a great standard of living, seemed the obvious choice.

Before becoming a ChipsAway franchisee, Andy spent 11 years with the Royal Engineers. By the time he left the Army, he had already decided that he wanted to work for himself. I was looking for something that would be enjoyable, yet profitable, he says. Everyone has a car, so I figured that meant a massive potential marketplace, and naturally, the idea of working on cars for a living really appealed to me too.

Initially, Andy visited a Franchise Exhibition looking for a windscreen repair franchise, but he says that when he spotted ChipsAway he knew immediately hed found a far better opportunity.

ChipsAway is one of the most successful franchises in the UK with around 350 franchise territories in operation nationwide, as well as a network of Master Franchisors overseas.

Based on unique technology, the ChipsAway system continues to dominate in the on-the-spot repairs sector, removing scratches, bumps and scuffs to car paintwork on a same day basis, and usually at a fraction of the price of traditional body shop repair methods.

Franchisees operate from professionally liveried ChipsAway vehicles, customised into fully equipped mobile workshops, which enable them to make repairs at a time and place most convenient to their customers.

With over 34 million vehicles on the road and up to 17 million minor damage repair opportunities every year, ChipsAway estimates that currently it serves only 3% of its potential market.

Andy joined ChipsAway in 2000, after attending one of the companys informal, friendly Open Days. Hard working and ambitious, his business quickly took off and within two years he had invested in a second franchise territory, putting an additional vehicle on the road and taking on an employee, who, seeing the success of Andys business, decided to invest in his own ChipsAway franchise a couple of years later, leading Andy to recruit Ashley, whom he describes as a second me!

Subsequently, Andy expanded again, adding a third vehicle to his thriving business and a third member to his the team, Chris. Despite the difficulties faced by many businesses last year, Andy reports that 2009 was one of his best years yet and says 2010 is shaping up to be even better.

What sets ChipsAway apart from many franchises is the tremendous, ongoing support from the franchisor, he says. From the outset, the training is thorough and new franchisees are mentored on a one-to-one basis by experienced franchisees. Thereafter, you have access to technical support whenever you need it as well as benefiting from strong central marketing support. Last year, despite the recession, ChipsAway invested in a high profile TV campaign to promote our services and certainly I felt a positive benefit from that. I know that more TV promotion is on the cards for this year; also ChipsAway is teaming up with Fifth Gear presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson to help further increase awareness of ChipsAway amongst our customers so Im standing by for demand for my services going through the roof!

He adds that more and more people are waking up to the fact that taking good care of their car paintwork extends the life of the vehicle, keeps it looking good for longer and maintains its resale value.

Some customers come to me to make sure their cars look pristine ready for sale, others when their lease expires as heavy penalties could accrue even from quite small areas of damage; but mostly my regular customers simply love their cars and are prepared to spend good money on them. After ten years in business, Ive built a strong reputation in my area for top quality service at a good price; Im often simply given the go-ahead to do repairs without even having to estimate!

Andys ChipsAway business has continued to grow at an increasingly rapid pace, hence his latest move to secure premises to open his first CarCare Centre. I will be keeping the mobile service going and will most likely take on another employee, he confirms, but a static centre is definitely going to be the best route to further expansion not to mention enabling me to keep on top of the demand for my services right now!

His CarCare Centre will enable Andy to process more vehicles and over time develop into more of a management role. Im so busy, its fantastic, he says. At present I work hard during the week, but keep my weekends free for the family as far as possible. Now that Im getting married, its important to me that I plan for the future and that I have the right work/life balance!

Currently, Andy estimates that he and his team repair over 60 cars a week. Once his CarCare Centre opens, that figure will substantially increase. Its like the ripples on a pond, he says. You do a good job for one person and they spread the word to friends and neighbours. I just get busier and busier, and as my business gets bigger my profits keep going up too.

Andy has always had a work hard, play hard philosophy. He describes himself as a social animal who likes clubbing and parties, holidays in the sun and, above all, nice cars so, hes prepared to work hard to achieve what he wants in life including, ultimately, a Ferrari!

Within a couple of months of launching my ChipsAway franchise I was earning the same level of income I had as a soldier. Today I make substantially more than that in fact, Im really beginning to make serious money now and Im only in my mid-thirties with everything yet to do! he grins.

I really enjoyed being a soldier, Andy concludes, but I have no regrets whatsoever about my decision to invest in building my own business, and certainly no regrets about my choice of franchise being my own boss is great and the satisfaction of seeing my business become increasingly successful is just fantastic. These days I can afford the good things in life, I feel secure and satisfied in my work and I still have exciting plans for my future - all thanks to ChipsAway!

Belvoir franchise best professional decision made yet!

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchise Owner: Jim Mitchell
Belvoir Office: Belvoir Loughborough
Launched: 1998

Joining Belvoir was the best professional decision Ive ever made

After almost 25 years in the Royal Signals Jim Mitchell took his time to carefully research the next step in his career. He joined Belvoir in 1998 and this is his story:

"I looked carefully at several business opportunities during my last two years of Army Service, particularly once I was into the resettlement phase. I wanted a new career that I felt I could adapt my skills to quickly and that would make me a decent living - at least as much as I earned in the Forces.

I could see that a business format franchise offered a relatively risk-free and well-supported route into self-employment. Of the many franchises available, I could see that residential lettings could be 'geared' so that earnings would keep increasing because there was no limit to business growth.

Belvoir stood out for me because it was centered on offering a good service backed up by sound systems from the outset. Importantly, I felt very comfortable with the personalities involved and felt I could really trust them. Those same personalities still run the Group.

I have a thriving business producing excellent returns in a growing market and I enjoy the lifestyle that goes with it. Even during the worst of the recession in 2009 our turnover continued to increase, as it has every year since we started 12 years ago.

The support has got better and better as the Group and its brand has evolved and I would strongly recommend Belvoir to anyone. Be prepared to do your homework on the area (although Belvoir will help with this) and put in the work needed, especially at the beginning. In order to succeed it takes hard work, common sense and a commitment to good service; lettings itself isn't especially difficult, it's your attitude that counts. Joining Belvoir was the best professional decision Ive ever made".

Belvoir franchise follows a distinguished military career

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchise Owner: Michael Betteridge, MBE
Belvoir Office: Poole & Westbourne
Launched: May 2008

I can thoroughly recommend Belvoir to any service leavers.

Michael Betteridge launched Belvoir Poole & Westbourne in May 2009 following a distinguished military career of 24 years. Here is Michaels story:

I was a Warrant Officer First Class (WO1) in the Royal Marines, with 24 years service. I was also awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) and a QGM (Queens Gallantry Medal) and achieved a host of vocational qualifications, including MIExpE, MILM, MInstAM(Adv Dip)

After extensive market research in my last two years during resettlement Belvoir consistently came top in all aspects of business support, approach, attitude and the quality of service that I wanted to offer. This was also reflected in the service that I had received from Belvoir.

The training and support has always been excellent and even now, some two years later I find that the continual support and training is excellent. I feel comfortable that I can jump in and out and pick up bits and refresh as and when the situation requires it.

Belvoir is an excellent stepping stone from military life to Civvy Street. It helps you to develop a business with the training and support that is offered. A lot of ex-military people thtat I have spoken to have found it difficult to adapt to the many changes that leaving the military brings. I have never felt that with Belvoir as they offer structure and guidance as you progress - something that is part of development within the military. I can thoroughly recommend Belvoir to any service leavers.

New lifestyle with Belvoir franchise after RAF

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchise Owner: Gary Legge
Office: Belvoir Bourne
Launched: 2003

Gary Legge served for ten years in the Army and a further 14 years as an Officer in the RAF. He launched Belvoir Bourne in 2003, and heres his story:

There were several reasons why I chose a Belvoir franchise on leaving the Forces. Firstly, I'm independently minded but recognized I couldn't go it alone, nor did I want to be without the business lifeline that franchises offer. Lifestyle was also an important consideration in order to build a credible business with the potential for a good income stream that was also located in a geographical area, and suited my family and me.

I had met Mike Goddard when he served in the RAF and I liked the product he was offering. I also trusted his integrity and, importantly, believed there was a business model that I could make something of and that would meet my needs as well as others.

I started in 2003 and since then things have gone from strength to strength. My business operates in a small Lincolnshire market town and quickly became a market leader. Growth was constant and resulted from a combination of transferable skills that I'd brought to the business, plus good staff, training, a focused business model and excellent support from Central Office.

It can be a daunting world out there when you leave the military. However, the skills previously gained, a strong business ideal, dedication to work and excellent support from Belvoir make this an ideal next-step.

Helen's lifetime of adventure leads her

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

It was a sticky situation, in which an Army background really came to the rescue.

Helen Fergie, area manager of Baguette Express, the UKs fastest-growing sandwich chain, was overseeing the opening of another new outlet in Aberdeen when, suddenly, the shop was surrounded by a crowd of nearly 300 schoolchildren, all of them clamouring for the healthy snacking franchises mouth-watering 1 baguette offer.

As the anxious pupils threatened to get out of hand, Helen a Forces veteran of eight years stepped in and, using her best parade ground voice, marshalled them into lines so that they all got what they wanted.

I think there must have been about five schools near the store, said Helen, 42, from East Lothian. When word got out about the deals we were doing, they flocked in from all over. It was worse that the canteen at Catterick Camp.

But the quick-thinking way that Helen handled the situation illustrates, in a nutshell, why franchise owners such as Baguette Express which is now snapping at the heels of industry giants such as Greggs and OBriens are keen to bring ex-Forces personnel into their operation.

Baguette Express co-owner Robin Stenhouse said: People who have been through the Forces experience tend towards a problem-solving mindset. They act quickly and effectively, they are self-disciplined, they are good at organising people and they dont panic in a crisis.

For Helen, who now supervises all of Baguette Expresss 66 outlets up and down the UK, the Army was just one episode in a life which has had its fair share of adventure.

Born in the small Scottish village of Ormiston, she emigrated as a child with her parents to Australia, where she grew up. She returned with them to Scotland when she was 12 and, by the time she was 18, she decided to join the Army in search of adventure.

She said: I certainly saw the world. I joined the Royal Signals and was posted all over the UK. I did two-years in Northern Ireland and I was lucky enough to be posted to Hong Kong before it was handed back to the Peoples Republic of China.

Helen carried out telecommunications for the Royal Signals and married an Army chef. When they came out of the Service, both with a substantial lump sum behind them, they set up in the pub business, running pubs and restaurants in Sevenoaks, Epsom, Gatwick and even the famous Barley Mow pub in Limehouse, London.

But her appetite for adventure was undimmed and, after separating from her husband, she decided to set off to travel round the world with a friend.

Helen said: I had been working for years in the pub and restaurant business with all these young kids who were taking a year off to travel. I thought, Ive never had a year off. Perhaps its my turn now.

She travelled to more than 40 countries, drinking from the deep well of new experiences. My favourite place, she said, was Louisiana, where I would be in an alligator-infested swamp one minute and in a Gone with the Wind mansion the next.

But all good things come to an end and Helen returned to her home village, where she went into business with her parents for five years. It was then that she met Robin Stenhouse and his brother Billy, co-owners of Baguette Express which, at the time, was embarking on a major expansion drive from its headquarters in the neighbouring village of Haddington.

She said: I started as an assistant manager at the flagship store and soon began training all the new franchisees. I became training manager for three and a half years before I was made area manager, with responsibility for every store in the UK.

It was such a fantastic change to be involved with a young, go-ahead exciting company a real change from the Army, which is a bit old school in the way it does things.

But the Army training was crucial to my success in the company, because it gave me organisational skills, man-management experience and a simple self-confidence which, Im afraid to say, many younger people today lack.

Baguette Express, as an organisation, is keen to consider men and women with British Forces backgrounds for positions throughout its fast-growing chain of stores. Robin Stenhouse said: Military training gives people excellent transferable skills which we are keen to develop, even if they dont necessarily have a catering background.

The last word goes to Helen. Theres a great chance to gear up to a new kind of life, she said. With Baguette Express, you can get in on the ground floor of a growing company. With some bigger franchises, you are just number, but here you are still treated like a person.

Military efficiency pays dividends in Dream Doors franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Interview with Tim Shears
Franchise Business: Dream Doors

After 12 years service in the army, Tim Shears decided it was time for a change. Now a Dream Doors franchisee, he finds that military efficiency and forward planning pays dividends in the business world. Matt Pigott found out more in an exclusive interview for Pathfinder.

What did you do when you were in the army?
I spent 12 years in the Royal Signals mainly in BAOR with the 4th Armoured division, finishing off in Colchester with 24 Air Mobile Brigade.

Why did you leave the army?
During a selection course in Wales I suffered a back injury which was not going to get any better, and feeling that I was no longer able to give 100 percent on the physical side of my career, I felt it was time to find a new career outside of the MOD that would set me new challenges.

How did you plan for the move back into civilian life?
Before leaving, I started planning a new career path, and after looking into different areas of employment felt that I would prefer to work for myself. So, after seeing the Franchise exhibition being advertised in Pathfinder, I decided to take a trip to the National Franchise Exhibition in Birmingham.

Did you know what you wanted to do?
Because of my injury, I knew that whatever I did couldnt involve any carrying or heavy physical work. I also knew that I wanted the opportunity to be my own boss in a business with minimum investment and maximum returns. Therefore, I initially bought and built up a property management franchise, which went well. I then sold this for a good profit after a couple of years.

How did running a franchise compare to the armed forces?
Running an office-based business was never going to have the excitement that the armed forces had. But a challenge is a challenge; whether its climbing a mountain or building a business up, you need a similar application of personal resources, but in a different context.

What did you do after the sale of your first franchise?
I did a lot of contracting work for Hutchinson 3G, which was a new mobile phone network at the time. When the contracting work dried up after about four or five years, I went to another franchise show to see what other opportunities were available.

And you bought another franchise?
Yes. After looking at everything on offer, I decided to invest in Dream Doors, which is a franchise specialising in kitchen facelifts. At the time, the country was just heading into recession. I knew I needed to invest in a business that would benefit from the downturn, and give me maximum return on my investment. Dream Doors fitted that profile.

Has army experience helped with your second foray into franchising, and can it help other military personal thinking about following a similar path?
You have to think on your feet in the forces, and thats a really good skill to have in business. I think there are a lot of intelligent people in the forces who have the right balance of skills to man manage and run a business when they come out. Buying a franchise can make it a smoother process because you have the business model already in place. And because its tried and tested, youre up and running with a brand, in a protected territory, quite quickly. The good thing about this is that it can facilitate the transition from army to civilian life, and provide an income where youre only really limited by your own ability.

The good thing about ex-members of the forces is that most of them can work on their own. Theyre also very adaptable. In the army, one minute you might be training on Salisbury plain, and the next your on the other side of the world on an active tour, so you have to be prepared for sudden changes, and then you have to deal with them. That sort of thing is really useful when youre running your own business.

Whats good about being a franchisee with Dream Doors?
The best thing about being a franchisee with Dream Doors is that, although you have a legally binding franchise agreement, its a very open business. So if you have some worthwhile ideas, they are likely to be listened to and implemented. Troy Tappenden, the MD, doesnt run the business like a boot camp; hes always ready to listen to the ideas of the franchisees, and take them on board.

What are your day-to-day responsibilities at Dream Doors?
Because I have a small team to carry out the door swaps and do the kitchen fitting, I mainly take care of the administration, advertising and marketing. I also deal with customer appointments. Obviously, its a different world from the army, with different demands, but I get a lot of satisfaction from earning a living providing a service to our customers. Its rewarding knowing how satisfied a customer is with the level of service you have provided in a lot of cases exceeding their expectations.

What other things do you enjoy about your business?
I enjoy the independence. Dream Doors gives me breathing space and flexibility. However theres still the support from head office when I need it.

I also like the money I can earn in the business, which is much more than a salary in a job, and is one of my key motivations. In addition, I like the fact that theres a tangible result at the end of a project, which is different to the consultation and property management businesses Ive worked in. I also enjoy working with good people - Im proud of the team Ive got around me.

Captain equipped for Granite Transformations franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Ex Army Captain, Rob Douthwaite, formerly of The Duke of Wellingtons infantry regiment, took the franchise route and set up a successful Granite Transformations showroom on the south coast, marketing a quality range of granite, quartz and recycled glass surfaces for kitchen worktops and bathroom interiors. The franchisor, Rocksolid Granit Europe (RSG) is currently recruiting new franchisees and Rob considers that service leavers are well equipped for the role.

Military people have massively transferrable skill sets in areas like leadership, project management, administration, training and logistics. They are used to instant problem solving and dealing with the unexpected, which are invaluable capabilities in business, says Rob. In areas like marketing and sales, where we need support, RSG has all the necessary expertise and makes the right tools available to us.

Military people will be familiar with the concept of mission-oriented commands, a decentralised leadership principle in which people at all levels of command share the burden of mission accomplishment, he continues. Well, a franchise network is rather like that, with the franchisor, franchise advisory council, technical support team, individual franchisees, their agencies and staff, all working toward a common goal. Of course, every service man or woman also knows that no plan survives first contact with the enemy, so you have to be flexible too and think on your feet!

Rob was more or less born and bred into military life, growing up near Catterick and being sponsored through sixth form college and university by the Army, before attending Sandhurst and joining The Duke of Wellingtons Regiment. After a couple of stints in Northern Ireland, he served on NATOs Northern Flank, close to the Arctic Circle, then became an instructor with the Army Training Regiment near Edinburgh, latterly transferring to Sandhurst. On leaving the service, he travelled for a year and spent some time in the Highlands, before returning to London and being recruited by a newly-formed concern, which was to become the worlds leading online betting exchange, Betfair.

As Head of Market Operations, Rob oversaw website development and the helpdesk team, enjoying the early pioneering days and frantic pace. But once the staff had increased ten-fold and the enterprise had become more corporate in character, he started looking around for a fresh challenge. Grabbing his colleague and then girlfriend, Georgina, he departed for Lymington on the south coast, in a rather more financially stable state then before joining Betfair. Not long after, Georgina, an experienced Executive Assistant, was offered a job by one of the early Granite Transformations franchise owners.

She pointed out that we were settling in Hampshire and it was suggested we might consider a franchise ourselves in that area, recalled Rob. We went along to a presentation, feeling pretty sceptical, but soon realised it was an attractive package, with a great set of products, processes and systems. So we set up our own showroom in Lymington seven years ago and within a month we were married and business partners.

What makes the Granite Transformations proposition unique is an exclusive production process, which blends high tech polymers with Italian granite, quartzite or recycled tempered glass, to produce tough, diamond-polished materials that are lighter and thinner than anything else on the market. It means that these surfaces can be fitted on top of existing worktops, eliminating costly demolition and reducing installation times, or used to vertically clad bath surrounds, showers and wet rooms. The fact that the material is offered in four different finishes and almost seventy different colours adds to the dcor possibilities.

A keen rugby player and sometime expedition leader, Rob is no interior design luvvie, but he and Georgina have learnt the kitchens and bathrooms business thoroughly and built up a thriving business serving two franchise territories covering the Southampton and Bournemouth areas, which recently gained an award for achieving sales 150% above target.

When you have your own home, you naturally become more interested in kitchen and bathroom dcor and, in this job, you get to see plenty of other peoples ideas too, says Rob. Badly-designed kitchens and bathrooms are barely functional, whereas good ones make a significant difference to your lifestyle. A great shower in a stylish bathroom starts the day off properly, while much of your daily life is spent in and around the kitchen.

Apart from a product offering that most Granite Transformations franchisees insist sells itself, RSG offers a level of marketing support that gained top honours in the latest UK Franchise Marketing Awards. In addition to showroom signing, branded workwear and below-the-line material like brochures, sales presenters, display panels, direct marketing and a tailored local website, RSG maintains an active programme of press advertising, TV and radio campaigns and PR support, all aimed at building brand recognition and generating new business enquiries.

With a franchise, you get to be your own boss, but with the benefit of an organisation that knows how the business works and provides expert support in all the key areas, says Rob. As part of a network of franchisees, you can also tap into other peoples experience and drop into their showrooms to see how they operate.

This year, RSG has introduced an alternative Granite Transformations franchise package, which reduces the cost of entry and broadens the appeal to those less technically minded. Whereas Rob and Georgina, in common with other founder franchise owners, operate a local workshop and manufacture their own worktops, new franchisees may choose to dispense with the production side and focus solely on selling, fitting, local marketing and running the business. A lucrative extra revenue stream is being added too, in the shape of replacement kitchen doors.

It is a strong franchise proposition and offers every prospect of building a good, profitable business, concludes Rob. Of course, no business is easy and you will need to knuckle down, work hard and get involved in all aspects of the operation. But service people are no strangers to that.

RAF to franchisee with Mr. Electric

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchisee: Andy Evans
Franchise: Mr. Electric
Territory: Newcastle

When Andy Evans, owner of the Mr Electric Newcastle franchise, applied to become a ground electrician in the RAF, he thought he would have many years ahead of him serving his country, however following a car accident twelve years ago and a serious back injury, he was forced to take his leave from the RAF and recuperate.

After spending 18 months recovering at home, Andy became increasingly frustrated as he explains: I have always enjoyed working hard and quickly became impatient and bored with daytime television, so I started to look around for alternative employment opportunities.

Having specialised in electrical engineering in the RAF, Andy began working for the UKs largest residential and commercial electrical installation and repair company, Mr. Electric as part of the Durham franchise.

Andy continues: I enjoyed using my electrical skills and the variety the job gave me, therefore when I heard about the sale of the Newcastle franchise, it seemed like an ideal opportunity to use my determination and skills to great effect.

Since purchasing the franchise in December 2002, the business has witnessed rapid growth, due to the number of large commercial contracts and commitment to the Mr. Electric customer service system.

Owning a Mr. Electric franchise has been a lot of hard work but tremendously rewarding. The vast growth of the company has been a direct result of our dedicated and excellent workforce, particularly Gary Wood, the franchise manager, adds Andy.

Clive Houlston, managing director of Mr. Electric UK comments: We are delighted to see that Andy is progressing well and are pleased to see that the determination of the whole team has been rewarded. We are sure in the future; the company will continue to grow, becoming a well recognised brand around the area.

In the future we would like to continue expanding our portfolio of clients, with both local and national accounts becoming the leading electrical contractor in the Newcastle area and the first port of call for homeowners and businesses.

New direction with Mr Electric franchise

New direction with Mr Electric franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchisee: Martin Brown
Franchise: Mr Electric
Territory: Peterborough, Lincoln and Grimsby

Martin Brown, the Mr. Electric franchisee operating in Peterborough, Lincoln and Grimsby talks about the transition from the Navy to becoming a franchisee.

What role did you do in the forces?

I was a Master at Arms in the Royal Navy (Police Royal Navy) and for the last 5 years I have been working as a training Analyst.

Why did you leave the forces?

After 23 years service I needed a change, taking full advantage of the Resettlement allowance, and the Standard and Enhanced Learning Credit. 2 -3 years prior to leaving I retrained as an electrician doing a number of qualifications including PRINCE 2, City and Guilds 17th Edition, Testing and Inspection 2391-10, Part P, PAT Testing and 2330. I decided that my best course of action was to combine both my management and electrical skills in setting up on my own as a electrical contracting business.

Why Mr. Electric?

Looking at the market I was moving into I had two choices, set up on my own, or look at taking on a Franchise. Having done a lot of research and talking to other franchisees I decided that Mr. Electric could give me the best opportunity to succeed due to the support structures in place. In addition another advantage is that being part of a National Company opens the doors to National Contacts with major corporations, which would not normally be open to a sole trader. Looking at the statistics a franchised company has a better chance of success than going it alone.

What have you been doing prior to Franchisee Training?

5 months before my start date, I began preparing for my companies start date, which involved researching the area to understand the business opportunities, setting up the company, Networking, talking with HMRC, Business Link and the Bank. I spent a lot of time preparing my business plan, ensuring that it was 100% accurate and covered every question that may be asked.

Advice to anyone thinking about franchising?

My advice to anyone who is thinking of going down the Franchise route is to research the company, the product, talk to other Franchisees and be committed and willing to put everything into your business both emotionally and financially.

How do you see the future?

Although owning a franchise is hard work, the rewards are considerable. The work is varied and always interesting and other local Mr. Electric franchisees are on hand to offer advice or vice versa.

In the future I would like to continue expanding the portfolio of local clients and develop long term relationships with national accounts. The aim is to become the leading electrical contractor in the local area and the first port of call for homeowners and businesses.

A new beginning with MetroRod franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

After twenty-four years of distinguished service in the military, Will Duncan MBE never thought he would find a new position that compared to the rewards of a life in uniform. Yet the three years he has been a franchisee with MetroRod, the UKs leading business-to-business drainage contractor, have been the most professionally satisfying since he left the forces.

Will had first considered the possibility of franchising at the end of his military career, but settled instead for a management role in the residential sector. Whilst he made a success of his post and rose to become Director of Housing Services, the dream of working for himself would not die.

After a lot of searching for the right franchise business to become involved in, I saw a re-sale ad for MetroRod in Portsmouth, explains Will. I did a lot of research and found MetroRod to be held in high regard by other franchisees in the network that I spoke to.

A meeting with MetroRods Franchise Director sealed the deal. Although Will had no direct experience of the drainage industry, he took the chance to invest in a successful business, backed up with the ongoing support of an experienced franchise operator, and the security of an existing customer base. He hasnt looked back.

Managing and running his new franchise was a challenge at first, but his forces background meant hed never been afraid of hard work. In the first two years, Will worked on drains during the day and did paperwork at night. Now, with three engineers on the payroll and investment in equipment reaping dividends, hes satisfied that all his efforts are paying off.

I dont feel that I have a job he says. I have a vocation which fulfils me more than any job I have had since retiring from the military.

From Paratrooper to PC Pal Engineer

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Phil recently left The Army to provide this essential 'emergency service' to frustrated PC users in the Sunderland and South Tyneside Area.,/p>

Prior to setting up the new business, Phil was a member of The Armed Forces. He joined The Parachute Regiment aged 18 as he wanted to gain some life experience and see the world. He not only went on active service in Northern Ireland but also served in The Iraq War in the run up to and after the liberation. After 5 years in the Army Phil joined a defence services company, providing security for reconstruction work in Iraq.

Another 4 years on, Phil wanted a fresh challenge away from the obvious dangers of being in Iraq, and started thinking about starting his own business.

'I wanted a new career with the freedom offered by having my own business, as well as the big personal challenge which inevitably comes from being your own boss!' Phil explained. He also decided to look at franchises as it reduces risk with a proven business model. He finally chose PC PAL's computer repair and support franchise as he liked the strong brand image and the professional support package on-offer.

'PC PAL's strong branding and professional service made them the obvious choice,' explained Phil.

Phil went through rigorous training before launching the business - something he was obviously quite used to with his Army background!. 'I really enjoyed going out with the PC PAL Engineers on real jobs, learning vital tips and tricks and really putting my qualifications to work in the real world,' Phil commented. 'PC PAL also arranged everything for my launch - the support has been excellent.'

'I am now a fully qualified Microsoft Certified Professional and also have the CompTIA A+ Certification for hardware,' Phil commented. 'As I also carry a comprehensive range of spare parts and diagnostic tools it means I can fix 99% of problems on the spot in peoples homes or offices which reduces the inconvenience to the customer of having to take the PC out to another location.'

The initial response to the service has been excellent and Phil is now looking forward to the challenge of building a successful business and being recognised as providing an excellent service in the local community.

Rising through the ranks!

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

One of franchisings undoubted success stories is that of Paul Fennell, whose recent appointment at Autosheen Professional Car Care marks the latest milestone in a remarkable journey, from man and a van franchisee to Managing Director of the UKs number one mobile valeting franchise.

After 12 years in the Army, Paul left H.M. Forces determined to carve a successful career for himself; in particular he dreamed of being his own boss and being answerable only to himself for his failure or success.

My years in the Army had prepared me for self-employment in that I had learned self-discipline, acquired practical skills and had a pretty tough skin! he confides. I also understood how to get along with other people, but was well able to work by myself. A so-called man and a van franchise appealed to me primarily because I couldnt see myself tied to an office or shop, I wanted flexibility and relatively low overheads, as well as something practical and hands-on.

Pauls investigations at that time led him to a carpet and upholstery cleaning franchise, where he spent eleven years as a franchisee before selling his business and joining the management team. During that time, he built a successful multi-vehicle operation and was awarded the coveted accolade of Franchisee of The Year on more than one occasion. He spent a combined total of 5 years as Franchise Manager and then Franchise Operations Manager before leaving and taking over as Managing Director at Autosheen PCC at a critical point in the companys history.

Paul takes up the story, Autosheen had just been acquired by Farcla, one of the worlds leading names in automotive surface refinishing, he explains. Under new ownership, Autosheen was ideally positioned to capitalise on the strong, well respected Farcla product range as well as diversifying into new lucrative sectors that are core to the parent company; however a well experienced hand on the tiller was required to provide the strong support and leadership that the Autosheen franchisee network expected and deserved. When I was offered the opportunity to take on that role, I jumped at the challenge!

One of Pauls great strengths as Managing Director is his ability to empathise with his franchisees, having been in their situation and shared their perspective; another is the drive and focus he brings to the role, thanks to early years spent in the Army.

In the few short months since he joined Farecla to head up Autosheen, Paul has introduced a number of dramatic changes. He has strengthened the franchise package, increasing territory size and significantly extending in-house training opportunities, making more courses free to franchisees and providing additional support through individual business development days. Determined to open up new markets, including marine and leisure vehicles, Paul has also introduced new products to the Autosheen range as well as investing in a range of glossy new marketing materials.

Franchisees are already seeing the impact of those changes, he says. We have secured some new regional business which is benefiting a number of our franchisees and have upgraded some of our existing national contracts. We are providing more customer focused marketing support on franchisees local territories and will be phasing in a new larger capacity vehicle from September this year.

He adds, Autosheen is exactly the kind of franchise that suits hard working, self disciplined people, such as ex Services personnel, offering an interesting, practical, hands-on business with a strong brand presence, a track record of success and fresh focus on the future!

Independence with a Go Kart Party franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Name: Stephen Frazer
Location: Portsmouth
Franchise: Go Kart Party

Why I chose franchising
I liked the idea of working for myself. Taking the enthusiasm that I had for the franchise and conveying it to other people. Provided me with a good work life balance but kept me in touch with people and was a recognisable product not just a small cog in a big machine

What I did before taking up a franchise
Prior to this I was in the Royal Navy. I completed 22 years service, having travelled around a majority of the world. Achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer Weapon Engineer. I was settled in the Portsmouth area with 3 young children of 6yrs,4yrs and 1yr. Prior to leaving the Navy I researched all avenues as I treated this as an opportunity to start something new, unlike a lot of people who leave the armed forces one day, only to return in a similar role if not the same role the next.

How I raised the finance
I initial toyed with the idea of fully financing the venture myself, but after thinking it through and discussing it with my wife I financed 50% of the franchise fee with a business loan from the bank. I chose the same bank that my franchisor used as this meant that they already had an understanding of the business and its potential. Also getting the bank involved financially means that they are more interested in me and how the business is going. It is very much a 2 way street. The bank where surprisingly keen to lend even given that I had approached them at a time when the banks supposedly like to hold on to their cash.

The training and support I receive from my franchisor
Was/is fantastic. I stumbled across the franchise whilst researching an activity for one of my children. The concept immediately grabbed my attention and wanted to know more. I met with the franchisor at the BFA exhibition at London Olympia and was hooked, who couldnt be. After spending time talking to both Sandra and Clive I decided I could do this. The company again where great, after allowing me a cool down period we arranged to meet so we could look at each other and see if the venture was right for both of us. I came away from that even more determined that this was for me. More discussions followed and then contracts were signed late May 2010. A full training day left me comfortable with the product and I just wanted to get out there and shout about the Karts. Support from that day has been very useful, lots of guidance where needed and ideas flow freely which is so different from my previous employment

The challenges I have faced
Getting to know a new business. Mainly it is the day to day stuff. Promoting, travelling, keeping my enthusiasm down so as not to over faze people. Thinking constantly of new ideas to complement what I am doing. Realising that this is my business but I do have the Franchisee team and franchise network around me to rely on for support. Generally all the normal things that anyone new to business experiences I suppose

My advice to someone thinking of buying their first franchise
Research the product. Is it totally new to the area or are you a variant on a theme. Be prepared for knockbacks, not everyone is enthusiastic as you. Keep the faith and work hard, everyday you need to be out there letting people that you are there, and what they are missing out on by not using you or your service. Be cheerful, it isnt all doom and gloom; this is what you want to do so enjoy it. Listen to the sceptics but dont let them totally influence your decision. Get your family onside and get them to see the potential in what you are doing.

My plans for the future
To make Go-KartParty the most talked about childrens entertainment activity in the south. To be the number one name on peoples lips when they are looking for a fun challenging activity for their children to undertake in a safe and controlled environment. To expand up to at least 3 mobile units within my area within the next few years. To wake up every single day enjoying going to work, though I do this already

Military skills helps Oscar Pet Franchisee

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchisee: John Allen
Territory: Buxton
Franchise: Oscar Pet Foods

After graduating in business economics and finance from Loughborough University I spent six years with the British Army. Serving in Iraq and Afghanistan couldnt be further from running my own business in the pet food industry but it certainly provided challenges that required motivation and self-discipline one thing that my work experiences had taught me.

It was my choice to leave the Army. I was away from home too often and with Katie, my partner, we were ready to find a better lifestyle. Franchising was our best opportunity and we researched a variation of companies but our love of animals led us to OSCAR. We found passion, quality and genuine belief in a product that offered an all-encompassing service to pet owners at a hugely competitive price nothing less than what pets deserve.

A franchisee's view of why they chose VIP

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

The most recent franchisees to join VIP are father and son Anthony and Michael Redgrift who launched their business the first week of June 2011 in Lincoln, and this is the story in their own words:

WHO WE ARE

Anthony (Tony): 22 years in the Royal Air Force as a Supplier, Always wanted to own my own business but never before had the financial backing or courage to undertake.
Michael (Mike): Served 2 years and 4 months in the Royal Air Force as an Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic, but wanted to do something else.

WHY WE CHOSE VIP

1) Environmental friendly system that is easy to operate and maintain.

2) Proven business.

3) Open and friendly personnel, from the Reception to the Operations Manager all have a genuine passion in what they do, they work as a team and are truly professional business people.

4) No scare tactics, No pressure just honest and open.

5) A two way selection process, they will not sell to anyone who has the finances. Both parties have to be happy with each other so that strong business foundations can be built on.

6) Allowed us to talk to existing Franchises who do this business every day. The Franchises are willing to be open and honest with you and I recommend anyone who is serious about this business to take the opportunity.

7) Cost, Everyone has a budget after all.

ABOUT US

Mike came to me and told me he wanted to leave the RAF, at first I was horrified at the thought of throwing away a such a great career that I had just completed. Mike asked me if you wasnt happy in a job would you stay? After thinking this over for a while I knew he was right as I wouldnt.

I wanted him to have a decent future so I insisted we looked around at Businesses for sale and at Franchises. We soon discovered that we didnt have any idea of how a business should and could run so we both agreed to invest more time into the franchise route.

After weeks of reading and researching I came across VIP Bin Cleaning, Mike laughed at the idea but soon came round to the fact that this is a real opportunity that has space to build on. We were both impressed with the Professional system and the Environmental impact it has. We requested more details and after reading that and asking more questions we booked a discovery day with the company- a free two way meeting to talk and see the business at the head office in Norwich.

We both came away with good feelings about this company but still had lots of leg work to do, they helped us talk to the bank, gave us sound business advice without putting any pressure what so ever on us. We agreed a date to talk again and that was that.

I was a little worried, not with the company but with the thought of can we do this? I can tell you, once you do make your decision, commit to it as we did and I am happy to report after just finishing our first week, we have had a great start and already exceeded our initial targets.

If I was asked if I have any regrets it would be I didnt start this business with my Son managing it sooner!

Ex -Royal Air Force Officer takes off in Auditel's record franchisee intake

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Last month, ex-Management Accountant Marvin Angel was featured as one of the record number of new franchisees who joined Auditel, the UKs favourite cost and purchase management franchise.

In the same intake was Simon Gibson who until recently was a Royal Air Force Officer, where his last role was Business Improvement Consultant.

Asked why he chose Auditel, Simon replied:I loved the proposition. I connected with all the Affiliates I spoke to and the start-up cost compared favourably to other similar franchises. He said that the training was very good. It took me from an anxious franchisee to a Cost & Purchase Consultant. A confidence building, mind broadening and attitude adjusting experience!

Edward Brewer, Auditels Business Development Director, reveals: Simon was among a fantastic group of people who conducted due diligence into the white-collar franchise marketplace before deciding to choose Auditel. We were delighted to train these new affiliates from a wide range of backgrounds. They all bring a wealth of experience and talent to our network.

Following last years nomination in the bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year Award, Auditel was selected as a finalist, together with only five other franchisors, for the HSBC Franchisee Support Award for 2011. This award, which is managed by the British Franchise Association (bfa), is given to the franchisor providing exceptional support to their franchisees and the best possible environment for success.

Edward comments: We are delighted that recognition of our offering by the industry continues. It gives potential franchisees confidence to make an informed choice. Applicants recognise the value of our cost and purchase management service in these challenging economic times. In fact, the number of franchisees in our network has increased by over 200% since 2005 and there are now over 200. Our higher earners enjoy an income of over 200k.

As Edward confirms: The Auditel approach to its network of franchisees has always been to go that extra mile. We constantly strive to provide unrivalled levels of training and support, the most extensive knowledge bank in our industry, and state-of-the-art marketing activities. We believe that this is a company which fosters trust and lays the foundation for each of our franchisees to succeed.

Head of Marketing Laurence Knott agrees. Now is the time for any management professional who is seeking a career change to approach us. Our Free Discovery Seminars indicate what may be achieved within our franchise which provides financial, business and personal satisfaction.

Granite Transformation franchise proves excellent career choice for former army capitan

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Apart from choosing to settle in Hampshire, they were open to new ideas and explored various business options, before somewhat reluctantly agreeing to attend a Granite Transformations franchise seminar.

We went along to the presentation, feeling pretty skeptical, but quickly realised it was an attractive package, with a great set of products, processes and systems. So Georgina and I set up our own showroom in Lymington seven years ago and within a month we were married and business partners.

Neither partner had any particular sales and marketing experience, nor any great interest in interior design, but Robs army career and Georginas as an Executive Assistant equipped them with suitable management and operational skills.

Military people have massively transferrable skill sets, in areas like leadership, project management, administration, training and logistics. While Georginas experience of working with high value entrepreneurs contributed complementary business know-how, says Rob.
Besides, in areas like marketing and sales, where we need specialist support, Rocksolid Granit offers all the necessary expertise and makes the right management tools available to us.

Setting up their own home stimulated an interest in kitchen and bathroom dcor, while extensive product training and assisting countless customers with their interior designs have given Rob and Georgina a thorough grounding in the home improvement business. So much so that they have built up a thriving operation covering two franchise territories, in Southampton and Bournemouth, and latterly won an award for achieving sales 150% over target.

With its unique capacity to fit directly on top of existing surfaces, eliminating costly and messy demolition, the core Granite Transformations product virtually sells itself, they say, and now there is an additional revenue stream in the form of replacement kitchen doors, for complete remodelling projects. Its all quite a change from army life and Rob has no regrets whatsoever about opting for the franchise route.

With a franchise, you get to be your own boss, but with the benefit of an organisation that knows exactly how the business works and provides expert support in all the key areas, he says.

The 43-year-old father of one is gearing up for the latest challenge in his life even though he has travelled more than a third of the globe and served in war-torn countries such as Bosnia.

Jason, who was a Regimental Sergeant Major when he left the Armed Forces, will be supplying market leading tools to the motor trade in his home town and surrounding areas.

He said: This new career is very, very different to what I have been used to and a completely new challenge in its own way. But I am feeling really confident about running my own business because the Army teaches you how to think for yourself and deal with problems as and when they occur.

I started trading about six weeks ago and the response so far has been terrific. I have had a really good reception from people in the local motor trade and I am already really busy. It has been a really encouraging start.

After leaving the Army Jason worked in the mentoring and training field before opting to go into business for himself.
The keen motorcycling racing enthusiast added: I had come to the end of my service and wanted to take my time before choosing what to do next.

I looked at other franchises including similar firms but decided to go with Mac Tools because they offer the best range of tools and are also the best quality out there. We can give customers a lot of options. I travel around the garages in my van to give them what they need at a good price.

There was a Mac Tools franchise in North Somerset but it finished about two years ago. My first job is to go out and meet people and let them know that they can get Mac Tools again.
The main aim at the moment is to build the business back up to where it was and then I will take it from there.

He said: This is a big change of lifestyle for me but I have to say I am really enjoying every minute of it. I didnt see my wife and son for long periods of my life and every day you would have to face a new challenge.

I am used to dealing with people from all walks and life and backgrounds which has helped me a lot.

Mac Tools are recognised as one of the top brands in the country and Jason will be selling his huge range of products direct to the trade.

As well as stocking spanners, screwdrivers and socket sets the former soldier also sells a wide range of toolboxes and accessories specially designed for the trade by Mac Tools and famous brands DeWalt, FACOM and Britool Expert.

Former soldier builds successful Chipsaway franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchisee Andy Darby is hitting all targets as his ChipsAway business continues to expand. From launching a man and a van operation on a single territory eleven years ago, former soldier Andy has built up an impressive multi-vehicle operation and a team of employees to serve his three territories. Last year, Andy opened a ChipsAway CarCare Centre (fixed base workshop) in a busy location, and as a result, he has benefited from higher visibility for the brand amongst local motorists and substantially increased his existing customer base from additional passing trade.

Andys is a real success story. When he left The Royal Engineers in 2000, he was looking for a practical, hands-on business with high earnings potential and a long term opportunity to grow. Thanks to ChipsAway, Andy has achieved his ambitions, he has a great lifestyle, drives a sports car and estimates his take home earnings are around three times more than his salary would have been had he stayed in the Army.

Opening a ChipsAway CarCare Centre represented a substantial investment for me, but based on my experience over ten years as a franchisee, I knew I could count on absolute support from ChipsAway and I was confident that there was plenty of opportunity to secure new customers and grow, he says. Once I had identified the right premises, I made sure that in converting to a ChipsAway CarCare Centre, I created an almost clinical, high tech environment, reflecting the quality and professionalism of the ChipsAway brand after all, were not some back street paint shop, but a nationally recognised and trusted company providing market leading repair technology!

ChipsAway is the UKs leading automotive paintwork repair franchise with around 350 specialists in operation nationwide, as well as a network of Master Franchisors overseas.

Based on unique technology, the ChipsAway system continues to dominate in the on-the-spot repairs sector; it removes scratches, bumps and scuffs to car paintwork on a same day basis, and at a fraction of the price of traditional body shop repair methods. With over 34 million vehicles on the road and up to 17 million minor damage repair opportunities every year, ChipsAway estimates that currently it serves only 3% of its potential 2bn marketplace.

Franchisees initially operate from professionally liveried ChipsAway vehicles, customised into fully equipped mobile workshops, and have opportunity to expand rapidly into a multi-van operation or CarCare Centre.

A year on from launching my ChipsAway CarCare Centre, Im really happy with the way my business has developed, Andy confirms. Now I can process many more vehicles during the day and undertake larger repairs, so turnover has jumped substantially. Of course, I have more overheads too, but the underlying trend is certainly onwards and upwards!

For Andy, it was important to maintain the mobile ChipsAway service too as some customers really value the convenience of having repairs done at their home or place of work. Accordingly, two of Andys employees work from ChipsAway vehicles and between them, Andy and his team, currently repair around 75 cars a week.

Andy has recently recruited another young employee to help him in the CarCare Centre. His plan over time is to build a larger team of technicians to enable him to gradually spend less time physically working on repairs and more on marketing and business development.

From the outset, what originally attracted Andy to ChipsAway was the clear potential of the business opportunity, coupled with outstanding, ongoing support from the franchisor.

The training is thorough and new franchisees are mentored on a one-to-one basis by successful and experienced franchisees. Following training and launch, ongoing access to business support, technical assistance as well as strong central marketing support is available whenever needed. More established franchisees can expect continued encouragement, advice and practical assistance as they come to consider the best way to expand their business. As Andy observes, If you want to make serious money, the ChipsAway team are behind you all the way!

These days, Andy himself is also a ChipsAway Business Mentor, providing that same support to new franchisees, sharing his experience and expertise to give them the best possible start. He is also a good example of a franchisee that has enjoyed direct impact from the ChipsAways national marketing activity, particularly the highly successful TV campaign. The advert is designed to build awareness of both the brand and the repairs ChipsAway can carry out and has been instrumental in significantly increasing repair leads to franchisees nationwide.
July 2011 saw record figures for repair leads generated for the network 47% up compared to the same period last year, with overall leads year-to-date 35% up!

The franchisors latest TV campaign, which launched in July, is expected to have a further long-term effect, says ChipsAways Marketing Director Robin Auld. TV advertising has had a tremendous impact on brand awareness and lead generation for our franchisees. Last time we appeared on TV, we achieved a record number of repair leads, including a 21% month on month increase through Google Pay Per Click activity. We are also seeing higher traffic than ever to our national website and feel confident that this latest investment in national television advertising will push figures to a new high for 2012.

For Andy Darby, his business has gone from strength to strength, with demand accelerating over the last couple of years. Within months of launching, he was earning the same level of income he had in the Army and this has continued to rise.

Naturally Ive had to invest in extra vehicles, territories and employees as well as my CarCare Centre, but its all been done on the strength of income from the business. Ive not had to borrow externally at any point and Im very proud of that, he states. I really enjoyed being a soldier, but I have no regrets whatsoever about investing in my own business; I certainly chose the best franchise and have been very happy with my decision to expand and open a ChipsAway CarCare Centre being my own boss is great. The rewards are there if youre prepared to work hard and the satisfaction of seeing your business become increasingly successful is absolutely fantastic!

Andy concludes, Im very happy with the way my business has grown. I always planned to build it steadily and feel proud that Ive managed to enjoy an excellent lifestyle, whilst still being able to afford to re-invest fairly substantially in developing a successful management franchise.

From Navy to Mr Electric franchise

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Martin Brown, the Mr. Electric franchisee operating in Peterborough, talks about the transition from the Navy to becoming a franchisee.

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Franchise: Martin Brown
Franchise: Mr Electric
Territory: Peterborough

Martin Brown of Mr. Electric Peterborough started to operate a Mr. Electric franchise after many successful years in the forces. He has operated the franchise for some two years now and has made significant strides forward.

What role did you have in the armed forces?
I was a Master at Arms in the Royal Navy (Police Royal Navy) and then over the last 5 years I worked as a training Analyst.

Why did you leave the forces?
After 23 years service, it was time to make a change. After taking full advantage of the resettlement allowance and the Standard and Enhanced Learning Credit I was ready for a new challenge in life. 2 -3 years prior to leaving I retrained as an electrician, which involved doing a number of electrical qualifications. I completed PRINCE 2, City and Guilds 17th Edition, Testing and Inspection 2391-10, Part P, PAT Testing and 2330. I felt that it was important to combine my extensive management experience with the new electrical skills and set up my own electrical contracting business. The problem was that I did not know exactly how to setup the business and therefore set about finding out more.

Why Mr. Electric?
After assessing the market in more depth, I had two choices. I could either set up on my own with all the challenges of setting up a business, which I knew very little about, or look franchising as an alternative. After doing a considerable amount of research and discussing the option with other franchisees I decided that Mr. Electric was the right option for me.

With the support structures in place, I felt that it was the best solution for me to succeed. In addition I thought that being part of a national team would be a distinct advantage and would open doors which I would not be able to do working on my own. With Mr. Electric there are national contracts with major business in the UK and I would never have access to this as a sole trader. I also checked out the statistics on franchising and it made so much more sense to go for it.

What have you been doing prior to franchisee training?
Five months before I started the franchise, I began preparing in detail for the start of my franchise. This involved researching the market to understand the business opportunities, setting up the company, networking, talking with HMRC, Business Link and the bank. I did spend a lot of time figuring out what was required, but I thought that it was necessary. I did plenty of preparation on my business plan, to ensure that it was 100% accurate and covered every base to make sure that my business would work.

Advice to anyone thinking about franchising?
Franchising really is a suitable route to business success that more people should consider. I would never have had access to the support and national accounts if I was working on my own. My advice to anyone who is thinking about franchising is to research properly including the market, the product and most of all talk to other franchisees. With any business you need to be committed and willing to put the effort in, but with franchising you have the option to do things quicker because the tools are already in place for you to use.

How do you see the future?
Although owning any business is hard work, the rewards are significant and I cannot wait to see where it goes, but I am sure it will be a success. The work is varied and always interesting. It really is such a benefit to have other local Mr. Electric franchisees to talk to about business concerns and ideas for the future. We work closely as a team and this really helps me to develop my business.

In the future I would like to continue expanding our network of local customers and develop long term relationships with national accounts. My main businesses goal is to become the leading electrical contractor in the Peterborough area and the first company customers think of for electrical services.

Just like many other franchisees I am eager to progress with solar power as the opportunities are huge!
I say go for it, franchising works and I am sure it will work for you.

Flying High with an Auditel Cost Management Franchise!

Armed Forces Franchise Oppotunties at WhichFranchise.com

Burnley-based David Gray joined the Auditel Cost and Purchase Management Franchise in 2008. Prior to becoming a franchisee, he spent 21 years in the Royal Air Force as an aircrew linguist, flying on board the Nimrod R1 reconnaissance aircraft in support of many operations, mainly in the Balkans and Middle East theatres.

Having left the RAF and seeking a new career, David recalls: Without doubt I could not have started my own business independently. Whilst the military did endow me with many good qualities and attributes, business acumen was not one of them. I made the decision early to go self employed and for me franchising was the only sensible option.

He visited the British Franchise Exhibition at G-MEX in Manchester in 2007. I found this exhibition very helpful. Having a full range of franchises under one roof was extremely beneficial. I came across Auditel and was immediately impressed with their business model and how well it suited the current economic situation.

Since joining Auditel, I have found my experience to be challenging and hard work, but ultimately very rewarding. While a franchise model offers some sort of proven framework for business, there are no shortcuts to success. I know this is an oft repeated clich but it is true. Coming from a military background, where you are pretty much told what to do and where to go most of the time, transforming to self-employment where nobody is telling you what to do, can come as a bit of a shock to the system! However, the majority of ex-military personnel should have the right qualities for franchising, namely honesty, integrity, motivation and a can do attitude. Back this up with the right franchise for you, quality training and systems and you could find a very rewarding career as your own boss.

He confirms that Auditels head office back-up is very good and only a phone call away. In the early stages, there are regular reviews to help keep your vision on track. The tools and systems that help to run the business are constantly being updated to keep the brand competitive. The network of Auditel Affiliates is also a great support tool. Everyone is willing to help each other with advice or practical knowledge whenever possible.

David adds: I am approaching the end of my fourth year. I have enjoyed the challenges and the rewards of self employment and cannot imagine going back to work for anyone else now. I have no regrets and really enjoy running my Auditel business. With experience comes confidence. Things have improved year on year and I am set for my best year yet in 2012!

Established in 1994, Auditel is the UKs largest and fastest-growing cost and purchase management franchise opportunity with a network of over 200 highly-skilled specialists. Auditel manages a broad range of business expenditure which includes costs as diverse as communications, energy, water, office supplies, freight, contract cleaning, merchant cards and general waste. Their client base of over 3,400 in the UK ranges from small businesses to global brands such as Pizza Express, YMCA and Oxford University.
