Behind the scenes of PROPS! — “The Taste of Heaven”

Last year, my good friend Berto asked me if I was interested in helping him out with behind the scenes photos of a music video shoot for local hip-hop artist, PROPS! I had met PROPS! previously at a couple of Berto’s parties, so I was happy to lend a helping hand. I took photos on location for a couple days and made friends with everyone involved, which helped open the door for more photoshoots with them later in the year. However, since the video had not been published yet, I couldn’t go public with any of the behind the scenes photos. Just this past week, the video debuted and I’m happy to include it here:

It definitely isn’t your typical hip-hop video that you’d see on MTV. There’s no crazy lights, donked cars, cash, or alcohol everywhere. The steampunk theme had me interested from the very start and made for some very interesting photos! Here is the link to all of them:

New website design and new upcoming features

If you’re reading this, you’ve already noticed that the website looks very different! As much as I love the Graph Paper Press templates, I felt like it was time for a change, so after a few days of looking at various designs (and trying out a few), I’ve settled on this new template from Theme Forest. So far I think it’s a good refreshing change, and the cool new logo that Tex from Graphix by Tex helped me with looks great! He’s also going to help me on a sticker design for that soon too, so give me a shout if you’re interested.

That’s not all that’s new of course: I’ve been super busy with a few different photoshoots, with a couple of them going public within the upcoming week! The first of these is my first Import Tuner feature that I wrote and shared photos with fellow NWMotiv photographer Mike Bowen. Jeff Hill’s former STI is finally getting a print feature! You can see the small preview up to the left. Look for it on news stands everywhere starting on April 3rd!

Also premiering this week is Erica’s feature on AmpedAsia.com. Here’s a teaser shot that I posted up on my Flickr and Facebook a few weeks ago:

A couple weeks ago, I also happened to stop by the local Subaru dealership to check out the upcoming Subaru BRZ. You can read all my thoughts about the car here on NWMotiv.com, but here’s a photo from the set:

Jason’s Genesis Coupe

Last Sunday, KP and I joined Josh Mackey in shooting Jason’s Genesis Coupe. I really needed help in figuring out what I was doing wrong with rig shots, and thankfully Mackey was happy to show me the way. He showed us how to set it up properly and I quickly learned what I was doing incorrectly. This finally allowed me to put my new (used) Tokina 17mm ƒ3.5 AT-X Pro lens to good use! It was Mackey’s shoot so I mostly shot behind the scenes, but was still able to get some decent ones from when Mackey was changing lenses and such. Here are a couple of the other perspectives:

Alan’s Do-Luck Evo 8

It’s been a long time since I’ve had the opportunity to just shoot a car without any time constraints, deadlines, or expectations. Alan and I caught a break in the weather on Sunday night and despite having my SB-600 and umbrella on stand blown down by the wind, the photos still turned out great and Alan was very happy with the outcome. I also used this opportunity to test out the Nikkor 85mm ƒ1.4G that I rented from BorrowLenses and it definitely proved the sharpness of Nikon’s pro portrait glass. Here’s actually a good example of the testing, with the apertures going from ƒ1.4, to ƒ4, and finally to ƒ8:

Except for one of the photos below, each photo was taken by simply using the ambient available light. Perhaps the wind blowing down my flash and umbrella was a sign that I just wasn’t destined for strobe automotive photography? Maybe, maybe not, but nevertheless I’m happy with how everything turned out:

2011 proved to be a banner year in terms of the sheer number of photos I’ve taken and how I feel I’ve grown as a photographer. I shot a variety of different subjects, helped mentor and advise a great group of photographers, and helped NWMotiv establish itself as a major media player in the local automotive scene. Rather than bore everyone with a long write-up on everything, I’ll just let the photos speak for themselves, starting from the beginning of the year. I had the honor of photographing Stephanie and Travis’ wedding last December, and now I had the honor of photographing their maternity photos. We had a bit of a scare because the weather was looking rather gloomy, but we caught a break with only a little bit of light drizzle and none of the continuous rain that was predicted. This was also my first time taking photos at Seattle’s Volunteer Park, which turned out to be a great suggestion from Stephanie thanks to all the beautiful fall colors. I took the first few photos with my Nikkor 24-70mm ƒ2.8, but then decided to switch to the Nikkor 70-200mm ƒ2.8 VR2. The 70-200 VR2 proved to be an excellent portrait lens and I’m starting to like using it more for portraits than my beloved Nikkor 85mm ƒ1.8D. Anyway, special thanks go to my good friend Erica May for her great assistance in taking these photos!
