I bought some incense earlier today, Hem Khus to be specific. I’ve burned a couple of sticks already and noticed something very strange. For some reason these incense sticks smell exactly like a dead alcoholic uncle of mine. He was always my favorite uncle because he spoke fluent French and fenced as a hobby. Plus he pissed off all the family matriarchs.

Unfortunately he was never very good with women and ended up an aging bachelor in a shitty little town. He began drinking more, and eating less. Soon his refrigerator had more bourbon bottles in it than actual food. Then he began abusing a couple of prescription drugs along with his alcohol.

By the time he went on a drunken tirade at Christmas one year and alienated himself from the rest of the family his actions had taken on the air of some submerged death instinct. It was if the way he conducted his life had been specially designed to entwine himself with the cold tendrils of the other-world. And so he lived, part-man and part-shade. His mind began to unravel from all four corners. No one really saw him after that.

Until he died, in the middle of the hottest July I’ve ever seen. An avid smoker, my uncle had decided to seal up all the windows to cut down on the utilities bill. The entire house smelled like old tobacco smoke and cheap upholstery. Random antiques and vintage knick-knacks littered the floors. The carpet in the living room was stiff and brown from years of my Grandmother’s yorkie pissing on it.

My uncle had a massive heart attack sometime during the night, which caused cerebral hemorrhaging so intense that blood actually sprayed out of his eye-sockets. And there he lay, in a house with all the windows shut, in the middle of July. Three days later the smell caused a passerby to grow suspicious. Several hours later my mother got a phone call and then I had to hold her for almost an hour because she wouldn’t stop crying. I remember not feeling anything as I stood there in the middle of my room, comforting the sobbing woman who had once carried me inside of her.

We had to clean out his house and sell it. I, of course, got the shit jobs. As long as I live I’ll remember carrying the mattress my uncle died on out to the dumpster. The long rivulets of red stained into the fabric, the musky and slightly sweet smell, the brownish-red bumps that may have been brain matter at one time.

It was like a dream. I remember feeling as though I was gracefully wading through all that human wreckage and despair. None of it ever touched me.

Now that I’m older these memories trouble me. Perhaps I found the whole ordeal so unremarkable and blase because the same demons which my uncle succumbed to lie within my very bones. Perhaps I saw something in that house and in that man’s life that seemed so familiar somehow as to be commonplace for my psyche. As if the form which his life had taken had been prepackaged as part of my mind from the moment I first drew breath.

It is my hope my dear old uncle and I aren’t as similar as I use to think when I was a child.

I dunno what people have been saying to you about moving into an apartment but I think it’s awesome. Forget what they think and say, they’re just trying to drag you down to their level. Anyone who seriously thinks you need your hand held is deluding their sense of self-importance and just flat out doesn’t know you at all. Fuck ‘em.
