“Secularisatie is het ten einde gedachte christendom waarvan het humanisme (christendom zonder Jezus) slechts het voorspel is. Contradicties, fundamentele behoeftes zijn daarmee natuurlijk niet verdwenen. God moet de problemen oplossen. Of de mensen zelf moeten dat doen. En als ze dat zelf gaan doen, gaan ze vroeg of laat voor God spelen.”

Voor NRC schreef Arnon Grunberg een stuk over het universalisme met of zonder God, de honger naar rechtvaardigheid en de belofte van verzadiging. Het stuk verscheen naar aanleiding van de recente publicatie van Arnons nieuwe boek Mogen we nog een beetje leven? en is hier te lezen.

Op 26 mei aanstaande is bij uitgeverij Atlas Contact Arnon Grunbergs nieuwe boek Mogen we nog een beetje leven? verschenen, een filosofische reflectie op de Bergrede van Jezus. Het is een essay over verlossing, of beter gezegd, over het verlangen naar verlossing, waarin Arnon onder meer ingaat op een van de meest raadselachtige passages uit de Bergrede (en er staan heel wat raadselachtige passages in die rede): “Denk niet dat ik gekomen ben om de Wet of de Profeten af te schaffen. Ik ben niet gekomen om ze af te schaffen, maar om ze tot vervulling te brengen.” (Mattheus 5:17, NBV21)

Wat zou die vervulling zijn? En wat wordt bedoeld met: ‘niet afschaffen’? Arnon gaat opzoek naar een antwoord via het werk van onder andere kinderarts en psychoanalyticus Donald Winnicott (1896-1971), die veel heeft geschreven over ouders en hun kinderen en de wetten die zij al dan niet gehoorzamen, en de Canadese denker Bonnie Honig, die in het enige boek van haar hand dat in het Nederlands is vertaald, Publieke dingen – Democratie ontregeld, de oorsprong van de menselijke wet onderzoekt.

De achterflap: “We leven in een tijd waarin de universele mensenrechten niet alleen minder worden nageleefd, maar zelfs steeds minder met de mond worden beleden. In dit essay gaat Arnon Grunberg op zoek naar de wortels van het humanisme en komt uit bij Jezus’ Bergrede. Hoewel hij de aantrekkingskracht ervan begrijpt, observeert hij ook dat deze leer vanaf het begin weerstand opriep – en misschien wel te veel van de mensen vroeg. Ook de Trump-revolutie – die niet uitsluitend in Amerika woedt – kan als een antwoord worden gezien op de ethische opdracht tot liefde voor alle volkeren van de wereld: ‘Wij kunnen het universalisme niet meer verdragen, wij willen eerst.’ Deze gemoedstoestand moet begrepen en misschien zelfs geaccepteerd worden voordat we een nieuw antwoord op de vraag kunnen formuleren: hoeveel gelijkwaardigheid verdraagt de mens? Als iedereen als eerste wil, welke plek is er dan nog voor de laatsten?”

On May 26, Atlas Contact published Arnon Grunberg’s new book, Mogen we nog een beetje leven? (May we still live a little?), a philosophical reflection on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. It is an essay on salvation, or rather, on the longing for salvation. Arnon explores, amongst other topics, one of the most puzzling passages from the Sermon on the Mount (and there are quite a few puzzling passages in that sermon): “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17, NIV)

What might that fulfillment be? And what is meant by “not come to abolish”? Arnon seeks an answer through the work of pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott (1896–1971), who wrote extensively about parents and their children and the laws they obey or disregard, and the Canadian thinker Bonnie Honig, who, in her book Public Things: Democracy in Disrepair, explores the origins of human law.

The back cover reads as follows (translated from Dutch): “We live in an era in which universal human rights are not only honored less in practice, but increasingly not even honored in word. In this essay, Arnon Grunberg searches for the roots of humanism and arrives at Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Although he understands its appeal, he also observes that this teaching provoked resistance from the very beginning—and perhaps asked too much of people. The Trumpian revolution, too—which rages not only in America—can be seen as a response to the ethical imperative to love all peoples of the world: ‘We can no longer tolerate universalism; we want to come first.’ This state of mind must be understood and perhaps even accepted before we can formulate a new answer to the question: how much equality can humans bear? If everyone wants to come first, what place is left for those who come last?”

Voor de nieuwste editie van de VARAgids, over pech, schreef Arnon Grunberg een essay over de Romeinse godin Fortuna, De vreemdeling van Albert Camus, mensen die houvast zoeken bij het urinoir en wie er wel of niet staat te plassen, en Gerard Reve’s gedicht Loos alarm.

“The author of the verses, written in Latin, emphasizes that mortals are in truth defenseless against this game the goddess plays with them. A game we might also call fate, though many a modern-day mortal will find that word hard to stomach. Fate carries a fatalistic quality, possesses a religious connotation, or at the very least its echo; fate runs squarely counter to the belief in the malleability of all things and all people, a belief that has now become a cornerstone of our society. Are humans imperfect? By means of excise taxes, other forms of taxation, and laws, we will force them toward completion, and where that fails, we will simply flog them until they are reasonably complete.”

For the latest edition of the Dutch magazine VARAgids, which focuses on misfortune, Arnon Grunberg wrote an essay about the Roman goddess Fortuna, Albert Camus’s The Stranger, people seeking solace at the urinal, and the poem Loos alarm (False alarm) by Gerard Reve.

„Das Einfühlungsvermögen, das hier in Form von übertriebener Höflichkeit vorgeführt werden soll, geht davon aus, daß unsere Mitmenschen praktisch unendlich fragil sind. Es fügt sich in eine allgemeine Entwicklung: Der westliche Mensch fühlt sich zum Patienten berufen und, hat er erst einmal die Vorteile erkannt, es ewig zu bleiben.”

In de laatste, onlangs verschenen editie van het cultuurblad Lettre International leest u de Duitse vertaling van Arnon Grunbergs essay over herinneringscultuur en slachtofferidentiteit. Het stuk, dat eerder al in NRC verscheen, is vertaald door Thomas Stegers.

“The empathy that is supposed to be conveyed by exaggerated courtesy in practice assumes that our fellow human beings are endlessly fragile. It fits within a larger development: the calling of Western man is to be a patient and, once he has discovered the benefits, to remain one forever.”
