Even when I'm expecting them. I'm not hard to please. Honest. These past few months have been the best of them! I hope it's just warming up before the holidays.

I received this package a few months ago from my friend Kay. The little packet at the top is a giant tea bag for your bath! Since it's getting colder, I think I'll be using it very soon. Who wouldn't want to soak in a giant cup of tea? She also sent me some mini-skeins of some wool. It's not much to make a whole project out of, but will definitely be welcome to add some accent to another project or a mini-project. And the jelly lens can be used for small digital cameras or even a camera phone. I'm thinking of attaching it to my LCA and seeing what happens. I definitely need to play with film more often.

And the following photo is what I just received in the mail earlier this week from my friend Anna. Strangely, there aren't many places in London that sells good affordable zines. Anna to my rescue! She even sent me some expired films she found at work. Expired film is a bit of a risk to work with, but perfect for Lomography. And of course she couldn't resist sending me some yarn! This kettle dyed merino wool by malabrigoyarn is luxuriously soft. I don't have a project in mind yet, but open to suggestions!

Cabled Scarflette

Admittedly, when I write out patterns, they're written in a language only I can decipher. My paper notes are covered in tally marks and strange abbreviations. But in an effort to put more of my patterns online, I've began to take more legible notes written in a language that most knitters can understand.

This is a relatively easy pattern, so don't be intimidated by the simple 8 stitch left cable. There are plenty of online videos to help out if you're a first-timer. This video by the Crafts Channel is particularly helpful.

I've made plenty of variations of this pattern, but this is the first time I've fully written it out.

These scarflettes were made as early holiday presents. Even though they are short scarves, they are definitely less fussy but still warm, which makes them great for places that don't get too cold.

Notes:

I used a smaller gauge than recommended on the Big Wool package because I wanted a tighter gauge, but ultimately that's up to you. I think it's a bit too much effort to knit up a swatch for a small project like a scarflette, so don't let it worry you too much.

With the above note in mind, my finished scarflette came out to 62x20cm.

When it's all knitted up, you'll see that your scarflette looks a bit pinched where the cable stitches are. To fix this, pull some of the yarn through the cable stitches so they are more even.

After knitting up the scarflette, and before sewing on the buttons, I like to lightly press and steam it with an iron with a cloth over the scarflette. I pin it to my ironing board if necessary. Be careful not to press hard! It should be gentle and light steaming. This helps to maintain a flat shape.

I used two 3mm buttons, but feel free to make more button holes if you'd like and adjust accordingly for the size of your buttons.

Abbreviations:

CO - cast on

K - knit

P - purl

Sl - slip

CN - cable needle

BO - bind off

I used/You'll need:

100g of Rowan Big Wool in your desired color

US 15/ 10mm knitting needles

Large size cable needle or US15/10mm DPN

Stitch counter (optional, but recommended, or take notes)

Two large buttons

Scissors

Yarn needle

Using a DPN as a cable needle! But of course, I don't feel right taking their money (especially with the pound/dollar exchange). And I'm aware that some of the patterns I use, that are not my own, are for personal use only. So instead, I've been holding postal exchanges! Honestly, they're much more fun because I love the element of surprise.

This is a monster I made for a friend from university. Her brother was expecting a baby and she wanted to give him something personal and handmade. The monster is made using the dangercrafts pattern for Maddox the Monster BUT I did it in crochet! I'm glad about the way it turned out. I like that the skin of the monster is thicker, meaning more durability.

In exchange, she sent me some beautiful crafts from Benin. The pendant necklace is from the Bariba ethnic group. The metal disc is originally a child's bracelet, but has been transformed into a necklace with the brightly colored rafia. It's to ward off bad health. The scarf was handwoven and the bracelet is made from cow horn. I love the mustard color of the rafia rope and I can't wait to wear it this season!

I currently have plenty of exchanges in the works. I'm so proud of him!

I few years ago, he lent his baby blanket to me because it was in severe need of repair. Sadly, it was beyond repair. Here are some tattered old photos of it I had taken of it:

He had spent his childhood nibbling on the corners. I couldn't do anything to fix it, so I returned it to him. But maybe one special day I'll recreate it for him. Well that'll be another day.

Sadly, I couldn't be there for his graduation, so I sent him a special guest instead:

Yep! It's an amigurumi penguin based on the penguin on his baby blanket! I originally bought the Amy Gaines pattern for the penguin, but I didn't like that it wasn't knitted in the round, rather it had a seam in the back. So, very loosely based on her penguin and with a mix of crochet and knit I improvised my own. Inspiration happens just like that!

Crochet like Crazy

I recently finished my first blanket! I had been crocheting before and after our trip to Korea. It was quite distracting to crochet during the World Cup--I had to pull it apart several times to backtrack on mistakes! But I learned my lesson fast.

I loosely based it on this Lion Brand pattern. So I decided to take them on a family outing before they all took their individual trips through the post. They frolicked around the park with me as I documented their adventures.

Roxy Craft Sale!

Attention all crocheters and crochettes! When she asked me to knit her a wedding shawl, I honestly had no clue what I was getting myself in to. Thus far in my short knitting career, it's one of the largest and longest projects I've undertaken. I spent four months prior knitting it on and off; sometimes I had to stop out of frustration! But of course by the end, the beautiful results were all worth it.

Gerard, the bride and groom, Ariadna & Xavi, and me.

Newlyweds!

These photos were taken by Joan Perramon.

It is knitted in a simple shell and wave pattern with a silk and mohair blend yarn. It was like knitting with angel hair. It drapes beautifully. I'm so glad she loved it, because if she didn't, I probably would've kept it for myself! Once I started knitting them, I couldn't stop. At least for Gerard and I, the coming of spring meant many babies being born, but I still can't seem to knit them as fast as our friends are having babies!

The three smallest ones were made with yarn by Classic Elite that I had found on offer for £1! I knew that the yarn would be perfect for monsterly looking skin. The larger monster in the back is made with Imperial Stock Ranch's pencil roving in "ospre." It was hard to knit with at first because the roving is unspun, thus very delicate to work with. After awhile I got used to it though. The larger monster also maintains the original Maddox Monster face, whereas Gerard and I designed all the faces of the smaller monsters. Don't they make an adorably gruesome family?

Travels

Between all my postings, or lack thereof, I've been doing a lot of traveling. In fact, the most I've ever done. Though I don't want to bore you with traveling photos... here are some little tidbits from my trips.

In February, I accompanied Gerard to Kingston, Jamaica for an economic development conference. The highlight of the trip had to be at Hellshire Beach that the conference organizer took us to. The beach had warm and calm waters and the shacks were full of great food!

In March, we went to Barcelona for his sister's wedding. Her and her new husband has a civil ceremony in El Salo de Cent in Placa Sant Jaume. The room was beautiful and adorned with newly restored textiles. You are only allowed entrance for services (and once a year to the public). One of the most beautiful things about Barcelona is that a lot of the Gothic civil buildings are still used today.

And of course in Barcelona we got to spend time with his family.
I adore our simple family dinners.

A few weeks later we were off to Dublin! This is the beautiful Dublin Castle set against a dramatic sky. We were just coming out of the Chester Beatty Library, which houses an amazing collection of old books and manuscripts.

And of course, I had to bring home some fiber related souvenirs! I bought these lovely Irish yarns from This is Knit in the Powerscourt Centre. I never imagined buying boucle yarn, but I couldn't resist the Cushendale yarn, made with wool and mohair. I plan on plying it with the tweed yarn and creating a little monster or creature with it. I think I'm going to try to purchase fiber from wherever we travel and create creatures with them!

I purchased this wool hoodie and this wool/cashmere blend wrap at the Blarney Woollen Mills that were having a close-out sale. But after working with different fibers, including merino and cashmere blends, I found that the pilling was not as bad as I anticipated. So experiment with different yarns to see what suits you best.

Experimenting with length is also interesting. It's up to you on how high or low you want your necklace to sit around your neck.

Feel free to leave your own tips in the comments! This is the double wrap cowl scarf pattern that Yulanda (of Little Thoughts) and I collaborated on. She chose an alternating diagonal pattern and we decided to knit it in a chunky wool. Though I don't have the photos of the scarf I sent to Yulanda, she did receive it in October.

If you do follow this pattern, I would love to see your photos!

The Yulanda Scarf

Notes:

The original scarf is double knitted with a strand of Rowan's Biggy Print in the color "sheep" and with two strands of Rowan's Kidsilk Haze in "pearl." But work with the colors that you like best!

It is knitted on very big needles to create better draping.

It is knitted like a long scarf, and then the ends are sewn together.

Though it's not necessary to ply your yarns, it may make it easier for you.

The scarf is made with a slip-stitch selvedge edge.

You'll Need:

Size 11 needles, straight or circle doesn't matter since you'll just be knitting and turning.

1 Ball Rowan's Biggy Print

1 Ball Rowan Kidsilk Haze

Row counter

CO 19 Sts

R1 (RS): k2, *k5, p5, k5; rep from * end k2.
R2 & all WS rows: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *knit all knit sts, purl all purl sts* end k2.
R3: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *k5, p5, k5*, end k2.
R5: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *k4, p1, k1, p4, k4, p1*, end k2.
R7: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *k3, p2, k2, p3, k3, p2*, end k2.
R9: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *k2, p3, k3, p2, k2, p3*, end k2.
R11: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *k1, p4, k4, p1, k1, p4*, end k2.
R13&R15: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *p5, k5, p5*, end k2.
R17: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *p4, k1, p1, k4, p4, k1* end k2.
R19: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *p3, k2, p2, k3, p3, k2* end k2.
R21: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *p2, k3, p3, k2, p2, k3* end k2.
R23: slip 1 p-wise, k1, *p1, k4, p4, k1, p1, k4* end k2.
R24: Rep. row 2.

Rep. rows 1-24

Knit until you have used most of your yarn, but have just enough to bind off after Row 14 and enough yarn to sew the ends together. Blocking your scarf is optional, but if you chose to do so, it should be done before sewing the ends together. Afterward, sew the ends together to create a tube. The scarf should be able to wrap around comfortably twice.

I love that the Kidsilk Haze gives the scarf an aura. And with the combination of the alternating diagonals pattern and the loose knit creates wonderful draping.

RIP Yulanda

Through some random clicking through the blogsphere, I found out yesterday that Yulanda Yee of Little Thoughts passed away a few days ago after a battle with cancer.

She had great style and was very talented behind the lens of a camera. Most of all, she was very sweet and kind. And as others have expressed, she will be greatly missed.

I got to know her through her blog and some exchanged e-mails. In October, I had knitted her a namesake scarf that she and I collaborated together on. Though I have no photos of the scarf with me, I think I'll re-knit it from the pattern I saved and post it later in memory of Yulanda.

My Fave Etsy Purchases of 2009

To sum up some of my craft adventures of 2009, I thought what better way than to list some of my favorite purchases from Etsy.

As I was getting the hang of crochet earlier this year, I wanted to find a way to neatly organize all my needles. It was getting a tad messy. After doing some searching on Etsy, I came across Coyote Craft's perfect solution: The Tuck and Roll Crochet Hook Organizer. I had mine custom made with my choice of fabrics! I love it! Here's the photo from my reserved item on her page:

[source]

These silk screened handkerchiefs from The Honey Press made some perfect presents for the men in my life, or as they'd like to call them "Sneezy Sheets." They have lovely modern motifs. This is the set I snagged.

[source]

I simply couldn't resist this zip pouch from Ity Bity Bags. It went along perfectly with my Lomo Camera zip-pull! AND it's lined in linen, one of my favorite fabrics.

[source]

What knitter can resist the adorable patterns by Danger Crafts? I purchased the Maddox the Mischievous Monster pattern earlier this month. I haven't started on it yet, but it has joined my "Things to Knit" list. I'm glad I finally have the time to sit down and just be. I'm also quite happy to find some photos in my inbox of some love that I had sent abroad for Christmas.

My friend Chris received the scarflette I had made him on Christmas Eve! It arrived with perfect timing. I used a cotton and wool blend yarn for this chunky scarflette knitted in fishermen's rib, and topped it off with two leather covered buttons I brought with me from Berkeley.

Remember Ona's Owl in Barcelona? Her mom reassures me that the following is a "I love it!" photo, nonetheless I'm glad she's wearing it. I made hers in a daisy stitch with some luxurious cashmere, merino wool, and silk blend.

And here she is reading my Christmas postcard from London. These are the reasons I love making gifts!

Things to Be Thankful For

I've been taking a bit of a blog break, but I still have plenty of projects building up. I was happy to knit the favor, or in this case amigurumi. Her name is Ona, and I thought of her name as inspiration to knit her an owl. Ona's Owl. I like the ring to it, and there is my thing for alliteration. He visited us in London this past weekend, and I didn't have time to snap a photo. But I was happy to open these in my inbox.

He sends his greetings all the way from Barcelona!

Things in the Making

Lately I've been fixed on the idea of knitted jewelry. For one thing, I think it adds a touch of softness and elegance. And another thing is that my husband seems to agree with the "low price point."

Here are somethings I've been up to lately...

This first piece is made from an old brass chain I had lying around from some costume jewelry. I pryed apart some of the chain rings with some pliers to install this cutely crocheted "mini-bib." I just adjusted a pattern of some crochet edging and used some stash scraps. If you look closely, you can see I used two threads, one shiny embroidery thread and some cotton thread. I like that the slight shine from the embroidery thread adds depth to the design. It was a really easy DIY.

I knitted this piece during my long bus rides throughout the city for a friend's birthday present. The main body is a knitted i-cord that I joined the ends to form it into one huge loop. I used one whole skein of Alchemy's Syncronicity. I love the shine of the wool and silk blend.

The"clasp" is made from a merino/micro-fiber/cashmere blend I had left over in my stash. It's knitted in a horizontal rib to add some stretch. I wanted to add the clasp so that the necklace could be worn in lots of different ways. I have plenty of other projects up my sleeves, and this gray London weather seems all the more inspiring for knitted things.

Natalie Dee

I know I've been a little MIA... but I'll explain why later. As expressed in my Sneak-Peek, I had recently become fascinated with decorative knots and wanted to incorporate them into my crafting. The result is a simple, but stylish necklace. The possibilities are up to it's maker. So let's get started!

In Barcelona, with my good luck knot necklace.

Notes:

This pattern requires very basic and simple crochet, knitting, and knotting techniques.

It's essentially an i-cord with a crochet "fastener" and knot.

It doesn't matter how long your DPNs are, but the shorter ones are easier to work with.

I recommend using a cotton yarn so it won't pill as you’re working the knots.

50 grams of yarn could make 2 or more necklaces... one for you and one for a friend!

Finished size is about 38 inches (about 92 cm).

Gauge: Exact gauge isn't essential, as long as the stitches aren't too loose or too tight.

Abbreviations (US):

CH - chain

SL ST - slip stitch

SC - single crochet

beg - beginning

DPN - double pointed needle

K - knit

Pattern is divided into parts:

Crocheting the Fastener

Anchoring the I-cord

Knitting the I-cord

Finishing

Braid Knot Tutorial

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Braids remind me of innocence and sweetness, and are linked with childhood nostalgia. For more knots simply search for them throughout the web; there are plenty of instructive videos and websites.

To start, I like to make sure that my braid knot is centered. You can do this by laying out your necklace, and centering 3 strands to work with. If on the first try, it’s not quite centered don’t worry, just try again. It does take some practice.

1: Start by looping the cord around twice to begin to work with them

2: Now you can begin braiding the cords.
