Bubble Birthday Invitation

Today, Anya and I made Birthday invitations for her Birthday Party.
We decided to make our own one-of-a-kind cards :) Anya was a designer, I was a supervisor and a photographer :)

All you need are:
- white card stock paper (or any thick white paper)
- food coloring
- straws
- bubbles (liquid)
- small dishes
- printer (optional)
- scissors or paper trimmer
1. Cover your table with old news papers to protect the surface of your table. Put on latex gloves. Pour small amount (1-2 table spoons) of bubble soap in small dishes. Add 4-6 drops of food coloring in each dish (one dish for one color). Mix the coloring with a straw. Have a separate straw for each color.

2. Dip a straw into the color soap and blow a soap-bubble on the white paper. Try to blow slow and "set" a bubble on the paper. The longer bubble stays the better "border" it will get.
Anya started with yellow color.

3. Place about 6-7 bubbles of one color and switch the color. Anya's next color was blue :)

4. Keep blowing bubbles and have fun!

5. You can use only one color if you want (here, Anya mixed blue and green and got a nice teal blue tone)

6. Let the papers dry. Iron if necessary. Print your text (or hand write).

7. Cut into the invitation cards.

P.S. We used the same method for making our own wrapping paper reusing old plan maps that my husband gave us.

My first painting class

I did it! I took my first art (painting) class at Michael's. I choose this class long ago- Superstition Mountain in spring (where I hiked several times.)

So, how it was :)

Holiday Greeting Card

This step by step tutorial will demonstrate how to make a personalized zig-zag greeting card.

4You will need hard white paper, stamps with inscriptions and ink for them, colored paper, glue and scissors (or trimmer).
Cut a 20 x15 cm rectangle (long square) out of hard paper and fold it by half. You now have a blank 10 x 15 cm card. If you wish, you can change the card’s dimensions according to your preference.
Now create a background pattern and add the greeting phrase on the front of the card with stamps and ink. In this case snowflakes and “Merry Christmas” stamps were used. The paper should be stamped in such a way that one picture does not push into another.

The card is almost ready. If you do not have much time, this could be your finished project:)

If your are not in a hurry, there are more things to be done with the card.
Cut strips of paper 5-6 mm wide out of colored paper sheets. I also put stamp pattern on some paper. Moreover, I cut the gold colored paper in even thinner strips:). The strips are 15 cm long.

Put a layer of glue on a 5 х 15 cm thin white paper sheet and stick strips of colored paper on it following a pattern. If you prefer things to look chaotic and unpredictable, you could stick them with no pattern in mind at all.

Take another sheet of thin paper 5 cm wide. Keep in mind that all dimensions mentioned are optional. Glue the striped sheet of paper to it under the angle of 45*.

Turn over the sheet and cut the striped parts that are sticking out on both sides.

Glue the segments that had been cut to create zig-zag effect.

Cut any sticking out pieces to get a rectangle.

Glue the zig-zaged rectangle to a background sheet and then to the stamped greeting card.
It is also possible to glue thin ribbons or thread in addition to the stripes of paper.

Your new card is ready!

Buckwheat Kasha with Meat

The National cuisine week has ended and I am so excited to try some new recipes.

Last week I decided to try one of them, with buckwheat. Originally, it was published on JaneBoFelt blog, and she used white mushrooms (Boletus edulis) for her dish. My family (especially my husband) loves meat, so I made my buckwheat kasha.

I used:
1 medium size onion
2 medium carrots
1lb of pork (cubed)
1 cup of buckwheat grains
2 cups of water
2 TBS of vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon of salt

1. Chop onion and carrots. Slightly fry them with 1 tbs of oil on the frying pan.

2. Replace carrots with onion in a warm dish. Set aside.
Add 1 tbs of oil to the same frying pan, add cubed meat and cook it for 2-3 minutes on each side.

3. Add buckwheat grains, salt, and water.

4. Cover the pan, bring to the boil, and cook on the low heat for 20-25 minutes, till the buckwheat absorbs the water.

Enjoy the healthy meal!

Salted Salmon

One of my favorite Russian cold collations is salted fish. Actually, Russians eat dried salted fish (any kind of river fish) with beer, salted herring, mackerel, and so on. Here, in America, I make my own salter salmon.
It's easy to make and it tastes great!
All you need is: fresh salmon fillet, salt, sugar, and spices.
Wash salmon fillet, dry it with paper towel. Remove any fish bones.
Mix salt and sugar (3:1) in a bowl.
Rub salt mix generously on both sides of the fish, using more on the thicker end of the fillet. Add cloves, paper corns, bay leaves.
Wrap the salmon with plastic wrap, sealing the edges securely, then wrap it in a second layer of plastic wrap because fish can "spring a leak."
Place fish in the refrigerator for 3 days.
After that, remove the wrap, bay leaves, cloves, paper corns. Slice fish thinly and serve as is.
Also, you can sprinkle salmon with a little of oil (sunflower seed oil is my favorite) and onion rings.

PS. My mouth is watering while I am typing this recipe :)

New Life of Old Tires

Recycling is a great way to give a new life to the things people don't want anymore. My father is good at inventing things that are practical. He made a wash stand for their garden out of 2-liter plastic soda bottles. He also made a sauna oven out of metal barrel and built a green house out of old window frames.

This year I visited my parents again (in Russia). Now, they have new "flower-beds" that my dad made out of old tires!

The tire has to be turned inside out (I do not know how he did it). The top can be cut out.

Also, this "flowerpot" can be painted. Add some soil and plant your flowers in. That's it!

But wait! You can go more "fancier"- make a swan!

I wish I had a garden here :)

Case for Knitting Needles

You know I love to knit. I do not knit as much as I make jewelry. My jewelry tools are more or less organized. Every tool has it's own place, but not my knitting tools. They can be in the cup with pencils, in the box with yarn, or somewhere else. I needed to organize them too! And I did!
I spent all day doing this important job. My husband was not allowed to disturb me. Dinner was cooked by him as well ... OK, at least he started it :))
Did I mention I made two cases? To make the first one, I use my hubby's jeans (his price for dinner) and piece of colorful fabric with butterflies. I bought that fabric years and years ago to sew something good for my daughter, but I did not. I ~~killed~~ It took a half day, probably, to finish this first case. It has 28(!) pockets where you can put long and short items (needles, crochet hooks, scissors, brushes, rulers, etc)

This case can be folded or rolled-up

My second case was made much faster :) Practice makes perfect timing, right?

This case has a flap on the top and 22 pockets - 1 1/4", 2 1/4", and 3" width

Easy to roll or fold to secure any size collection

I have a little leftover of butterfly fabric. Probably, I will make another, short case, just for crochet hooks and short needles. I need to do it soon, or I will forget ... as usual.....

Playing with Polymer Clay Again

Last weekend, I bought 'Premo' polymer clay because it was on sale at Michael's- for only $0.99. Well, I needed to make something with it. My 7 y.o. daughter helped me rolling clay in my pasta machine. Conditioning clay, to be exact.
To make long story shorter, I will show you my results. OK, not every single item ( I made 7 pairs of earrings, 3 pendants, and dozens of buttons.)
This pendant reminds my Picasso's art. Don't you think? My daughter sees olives, ham , fried eggs and peacock feathers. Hm-m-m... Did I feed her?

I made a matching pair of earrings for the Picasso Pendant. BTW, all Picasso Jewelry glows in the dark!

Next, Hidden Flowers Pendant and Earrings. You can see flower silhouettes...and, if you are attentive, you can see a lady bug :)

Even my pendants and earrings are big, they are lightweight. They have been sanded and have two coats of glaze for a shine and durability.

When you make something with polymer clay, you always have leftovers. Some of them really pretty. So, why not to make cute buttons out of them? They will upgrade any piece of garment or bag, they are great for scrap-booking and knitting/crocheting projects.
This set of 5 double-sided buttons is a "cousin" of Hidden Flowers Jewelry set. Can you see bees on one of the button?

These buttons remind me gray cold marble.

Grandma's Garden- Crayon Art

It's hard to find a good present for our grandma (actually, she's my mom, but Anya's grandma).

"I have everything," she says always.

Ok, we will not buy a present, we will make it!

My mom has a beautiful garden in Russia. She grows everything there: potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, apples, strawberries, black and red currants, gooseberries... and it's not all. Her favorites are flowers. Her garden is full of flowers.

My mom's birthday is in February. No flowers yet :) Well, we will give her a garden of flowers made of...crayons!

To make a piece of art, we used canvas (12"x12"), crayons (we used 3 boxes to pick only greens), artificial flowers, glue gun and hair drier.

Glue crayons to the edge of canvas with a glue gun.

Turn canvas upside down so crayons are pointing down.

Using hair drier on a low heat, start melting crayons..

This job is a little messy, do not forget to put (news)paper around.

Upcycling Sweaters. Part 2 - Coasters

I made a lot of stuff out of felted sweaters: bags, gadget cases, little cute toys ....And I had a lot of small scraps that I felt sorry to throw them away. What else could I make out of little pieces? Well, they are not tiny-little, something about 4"-5" (13cm) across....
Coasters!!! They do a fantastic job protecting your furniture from those inevitable water rings made by our drinking glasses and coffee mugs. Right? So, I made coasters, and they are double sided!

You will need:
- Felted pieces not smaller than 5" across
- Scissors
- Sewing machine with thread
- Steam iron

1. Cut out circles with your scissors, 4" in diameter. Make twice more circles than coasters needed (i.e. for 6 coasters cut out 12 circles):

2. Arrange circles in pairs putting one on top of another:

3. You may want to pin the circles in place (I did not do this). Using either simple or zigzag stitch, sew the edges together:

4. Using zigzag or another decorative stitch, sew through the center:

5. If you desire, make another stitch perpendicular to the previous stitch:

6. Your coaster may look a little"wavy" like this:

7. Steam iron your coasters so they look nice and flat.

Vegetable Turkey

This recipe is not new, but maybe some people have not seen or tried it before.

A dip has to be prepared a couple of days or at least an hour in advance.
For the dip you will need:
~ 400 grams of cream cheese
~ 4 table spoons of sour cream
½ cup of finely chopped parsley
1/4 tea spoon of black or white grinded pepper
2 tea spoons of grinned lemon zest

*Cover the bottom of 10-12 cm wide bowl with cling film. Cling film has to be firmly attached to the sides of the dish.
* Mix cream cheese and sour cream in a blender until the consistency is smooth. Take the cream cheese out of the fridge some time in advance, as mixing warm cheese is easier.
* Add the lemon zest, parsley and pepper to the mixture. 3-4 table spoons of Tabasco can be added if you prefer spicy food. Mix in a blender again.
* Put the prepared mixture into the bowl covered with cling film. Carefully bend the corners and cover the cheese dip.
Put the dip into the fridge. It has to be used over 3 days.
Now let’s prepare vegetables for the turkey. You will need:
- celery
- baby-carrot
- parsley
- 1-2 cucumbers
- red and yellow bell peppers
- lettuce
- broccoli
- radish
- 1 small tomato
- ½ cup of pecans or walnuts

* Evenly distribute lettuce leaves on the top half of a round plate or a tray. Then put bell peppers cut in long stripes on top of the lettuce leaves alternating the colors.

* Afterwards lay 2-3 rows of rounds of cucumber. It is possible to stick short branches of parsley between the rows of bell peppers and cucumbers. Carefully place the dip on the lower side of the plate by overturning the bowl with caution. Remove the bowl and take off the cling film.

It’s time to form the turkey’s "body ".
*On the top side of the dip lay a row of baby carrots slightly pressing them into the soft dip by one side. Then place small leaves of celery on top of the carrots.
*Make the turkey’s "neck" from a celery stem, slightly pushing it into the "body". The bird’s claws can be made of carrots and don’t forget the "head" – place a tomato on top of the neck

*"Feathers" will be made from pecans. Start laying them from bottom progressing towards the top.
* Place broccoli on both sides of the turkey on the remaining empty space on the plate.

* Draw eyes and bleak with sour cream or mayonnaise, and the bird is ready. Bon appetite!

PS. I also had radish, so I used it too (see the first photograph).
It is not necessary to use exactly the vegetables mentioned for the turkey. Use your imagination and use other vegetables if you wish to experiment. Your relatives and guests will be surprised that it is possible to make a "bird" from vegetables.

Upcycling Sweaters. Part 1- Big and Little Bags.

This is a great time to find sweaters in your local thrift store - many people are putting away their winter clothing and getting rid of some pieces. You can make everything from sturdy tote bags to felted jewelry.

It's quite easy to felt a sweater, really - just run it through your washer with hot water and soap, and then through your dryer.

Only animal-fiber sweaters will felt, so look for wool, alpaca, cashmere, or a blend of these. If you find a great sweater that's at least 80% animal fiber with a little synthetic thrown in, give it a try - sometimes, they may felt just fine. It felted when you cannot see the stitches, and it will not unravel when cut.

I made this bag from upcycled 100% wool sweater that I felted. I used all scraps from that sweater:flowers were made from sweater's sleeves. You will love it because it's soft, light , beautiful, and did I mention warm?

A couple weeks ago, I found long 100% merino wool sweater, size XL. When I felted it, it could fit my 7 yo daughter. No kidding! I made a lot of cool stuff out of it thought! First, I wanted to "dress up" a laptop.

Then, I made this Eco-friendly sleeve for iPhone. The felting makes the cover strong yet remains soft and will add a layer of cushioned protection.

Tooth Fairy having trouble finding anything under your pillow? This cute felt little pillow is just for her!

PART 2

Tonto Natural Bridge

Last week, in October break, we decided to go to Kohl's Ranch, near Payson, which is not far from Phoenix. It was our second visit of that place. The weather was very nice. We went down to the Creek. To tell the truth, I wanted to see my "old friend"- an apple tree. Last time I noticed a lot of small green apples on it. Now, this beauty had a lot of pink apples on it. Some were on the ground, touched be animals ( or worms?).

I took good -looking one with me to the hotel. Anya, my 7 y.o. daughter, looked at me as I was crazy.What? Did you ever tried wild organic (!) apples before? O my! This one was really good. Anya trusted me and made a bite :) Then, my husband tried too. He agreed that this "free" apple was really GOOD!. You know what? Next early morning, we went down to that apple tree, shook it, and gathered a couple of pounds of yummy apples. I will tell you what I did with them (stay updated).

Ok, after apple-tree trip we left Kohl's Ranch and drove 10 miles North, to see Tonto Natural Bridge.
Tonto Natural Bridge is a natural arch in Arizona, USA, that is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. The area surrounding the bridge has been made into Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. It has four hiking trails. We picked the Gowan Trail - approximately 1/2 mile long, ending at an observation deck in the creek bottom. The hike is not for everyone - it's quite strenuous coming back up and even a bit treacherous for anyone who might be a bit clumsy at hiking up steep trails - but it was well worth the effort. Incredible scenery, incredible bridge & waterfall.

DIY: Easy Buttons

Do you need sometimes nice buttons but cannot find what you need? I had this problem before, but now I make my own buttons with polymer clay.

Today, I want to share the easiest way how to make polymer clay buttons.

All you need are:

Polymer clay in wanted color
Pasta machine (or acrylic roller)
Old button as a stamp
Plastic wrap
Cutter (for 1st method)
Tooth pick.

First Method

1. Condition Polymer clay until it’s soft and pliable. Roll it until it is 3mm thickю (my example of polymer clay sheet is only for one button, but you make as big as you need)

2. Pick a button with some lovely design. If you are making only one button like me, your polymer clay has to be larger than wanted button and cutter.

3. Press the button face down into polymer clay. You may want to sprinkle a button with water before stamping.

4. remove the button. You have a nice stamp!

5. Cover the polymer clay sheet with plastic wrap. Place a cutter in the center(!) of your new button, press and twist slightly the cutter.

6. remove plastic wrap and using a tooth pick make holes. Use the marks from the old button.

7. Bake the buttons according to the polymer clay instruction.

Second Method (without cutter)

1. Condition Polymer clay until it’s soft and pliable. Make a ball (size of the ball depends on the future button size).

2. Press the ball with acrylic (or glass) sheet. , so it is flat and 3mm thick.

3. Press the button face down into polymer clay. You may want to sprinkle a button with water before stamping.

4.Remove the "old" button . Make holes with a tooth pick.

5. Bake the buttons according to the polymer clay instruction.
