Laura Kendall is the Director of The Winter Center, the Millersville University visual and performing arts center on the university’s main campus. The brand new, state of the art building opened at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. Between this space and The Ware Center, the university’s downtown Lancaster visual performing arts center, MU has provided an overwhelming amount of arts activities and events that benefit the entire Lancaster community.

As the 2012-2013 school year comes to a close, I had a chance to sit down with Laura for a little bit of the history around the new space, and her experience moving to Lancaster and working with the students and faculty.

A Modern Look at Classic Albums

John Modern is a Religious Studies professor at Franklin and Marshall College and the co-host of Solid Side Vinyl with Jeremy Seedorf, Thursdays from 9 to 11pm on WFNM 89.1 (on summer break until September 2013). Today John takes a look at the 1981 album from The Velvet Underground called White Light / White Heat.

Podcasting at the Launch Lounge with Deni Gauthier and Ken Mueller

The Launch Music Conference and Festival took over downtown Lancaster on April 25th through the 27th. This was the 5th Launch Music Conference that happens each year during the last weekend in April. Along with our friends, Sam Campbell from Gigspots and Jennifer Dunn at The Candy Factory, the Wood Stove House sponsored a musicians lounge in the cozy back room of The Candy Factory on the 300 block of N. Queen St. in downtown Lancaster. We were set up all day Friday and Saturday for Conference goers to stop by for coffee, snacks, jam sessions, and rich conversation about music, Launch, and the Lancaster music scene.

The Pig Merchants is Adam Rohrer and Brad Furhman, a Lancaster-based songwriting duo who released their debut album, On We Go, in 2012 and are cruising through 2013 with the wind at their backs. The two formed the band after sharing several shows and finding a common interest in using the gift of songwriting to help get through hard times.

Over the past several years, The Pig Merchants have slowly and steadily built momentum in the local Lancaster music scene. Although the band is based around the core duo, consistent guest musicians include local songwriter and vocalist Kim Narcisi, Mollie Swartz, fiddler from The Ogham Stones, and Jesse Porter, drummer from The Sketties.

Young Lancaster creator Shawna Stoltzfoos

Shawna Stoltzfoos is a Lancaster-based screenwriter, who moved to the area last summer with her husband, singer-songwriter Jake Lewis. Shawna and Jake were both featured on episode #83 of Around the Wood Stove in November 2012 talking about the decision to relocate to Lancaster because of the blossoming creative scene here.

Inspired by what she found after settling in, Shawna began writing a film series called Young/Lancaster that explores what it’s like to be a young adult artist living in Lancaster City. During the first half of 2013, she has been shooting the series along with a large cast and crew of local Lancaster artists. The stories are set here in Lancaster City and are shot in real Lancaster businesses and locations.

Wood Stove House is really excited about the work that Shawna is doing with this series and we will be keeping you posted about the series in the months to come. Contact Shawna on Facebook or via email.

Vinegar Creek Constituency

The Vinegar Creek Constituency has been a Lancaster music scene staple for over a half dozen years. The band plays with bluegrass instrumentation, but provides audiences with a very high energy rock ‘n roll attitude mixing American roots music from bluegrass to gypsy jazz to blues, rock, and country.

Leo DiSanto, guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter in Vinegar Creek, joined me for a chat about the band’s latest album, Don’t Go Back in Time. The album was recorded live to tape at Right Coast Recording here in Lancaster County and was released this past January. Other members of the band include Mark Rast on banjo, Pete DiVitry on fiddle, and Jeff Bryson on mandolin and lead vocals on a handful of songs.

Along with full band shows, Leo and Jeff often perform on the road or at smaller local gigs as the Vinegar Creek Duo, and Leo also occasionally performs solo. You can find all of their tour dates on the band’s website and download a copy of Don’t Go Back in Time.

Dr. Amanda Kemp is the founder and artistic director of Theatre for Transformation a touring theatre company from Lancaster, PA that focuses on Black History and provides opportunities for both members of the company AND the audience to open their hearts and minds and experience new perspectives through stories that haven’t necessarily been told.

To recognize the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the company launched a new show in January called Emancipation Sweet. The first drafts of this show were performed at several locations locally including the Lancaster YWCA on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Another performance will be held this upcoming Wednesday, February 6 at Neuman University in Aston, PA. Then later in the year a full production version will be presented at The Ware Center here in downtown Lancaster. We’ll keep you posted!

Jesse Baker

Jesse Baker, The Districts, and Unusual Suspects are on the program to talk about life as young independent musicians in Lancaster. The average age of the members these bands is about 19. We wanted to feature a few of these young bands on the show, but also wanted to tap into their thoughts on launching their music careers here in Lancaster. How do you balance school and music? How is the Lancaster music scene for bands finishing or just out of high school?

Jesse Baker

Jesse Baker is a pop-rock singer-songwriter who broke into the Lancaster music scene in a big way over the past year. Working as a power trio with a rhythm section including one musician still in high school and another in college, 20 year old Baker released his debut full-length album, Tearin’ Down the Walls (FREE Download) in 2012. Jesse started the new year with a brand new four-piece band that he’ll be working with going forward.

The Districts

The Districts

The Districts are three high school seniors and a 2012 high school graduate who play a unique flavor of gritty blues and soul inspired rock. Frontman and guitarist Rob Grote attacks the music with a passionate intensity well beyond his years. The band broke into the Philly scene last year and all members plan to move to Philly in the fall where a couple of them will be starting college.

Unusual Suspects

Unusual Suspects is a folk, blues, and gypsy jazz quartet from Lancaster built around singer and guitarists Jordan Rast and Tuck Ryan. Jordan is a sophomore at Millersville University and Tuck is a senior in high school. The Suspects evolved from a band that Jordan put together in 2011 to support his latest solo album, Fractured Love, that included the same rhythm section, Evan Graver on drums and Peter Reist on upright bass.

Mandalele: Frances Miller, Wendi Sirat, Lorraine Duisit

Mandalele is a folk trio that formed in Sperryville, VA, a small town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The band is made up of Lorraine Duisit (vocals, mandolin, guitars) and Wendi Sirat (vocals, ukekele, percussion), and Lancaster native Frances Miller (vocals, violin, viola, hang drum). All three women are songwriters and multi-instrumentalists creating very unique tapestry of sound that has been captured beautifully on their debut album, Riddled in Rhyme.

Frances spent several of her childhood years in Kenya and her post-high school years living in various parts of the United States including Sperryville, where she met Lorraine and Wendi. She moved back to the Lancaster area during the spring of 2012 with her husband, Tim Sauder to open Fiddle Creek Dairy, a small dairy farm in southern Lancaster County.

Since moving back to back to the area, Frances has performed with Dr. Amanda Kemp and Theatre for Transformation, worked alongside violinist Michael Jamanis at a summer strings camp with Music for Everyone, performed several concerts with our world-influenced folk band, Sopa Sol, and was the pied-fiddler in the Wood Stove House production of Plays Grounds, our onsite theater event during the 2012 Spring ArtWalk here in Lancaster. She has had no trouble quickly becoming an integral part of the Lancaster creative scene.

The Candy Factory

This week on the show I also caught up with Anne Kirby from The Candy Factory, a communal work place in Lancaster city that opens its space to artists and arts producers at no charge during off hours. Jake plays shows regularly throughout the mid-Atlantic region from New York to Baltimore. He recently released a full length studio album called Location, Location and a self produced EP, We Can Get Out of Here, available for free on Bandcamp. Jake will be playing in Lancaster on Saturday, November 24 at Live From the Cellar with the Unusual Suspects.

Shawn’s film Spaceman Wilson (trailer) was produced by Tim Scott and is currently making rounds on the independent film circuit. She’s also developing a television series called Young Lancaster and is currently looking for Lancaster area creatives who are interested in working on the show.

Lancaster’s First Friday

Lancaster’s First Friday is this week on November 2. Each first Friday in downtown Lancaster thousands of friends and neighbors descend on Lancaster City to dine at the local eateries, visit the shops and galleries, enjoy street performers of all kinds, and simply bask in the greatness that is the Lancaster arts scene.

Check out Theatre for Transformation’s final Sweeter the Berry showcase of 2012 at the YWCA at 110 N. Lime Street in Lancaster at 6pm. This is a free family friendly event that celebrates the sweetness of life in multicultural Lancaster. This week’s Berry features poetry, dance, and drumming.

Swing by Binn’s Park throughout the evening where our friend Jenny Hill will be hooping in the park. Jenny is a professional poet, performer, and hoop instructor. She’ll have plenty of hoops for everyone to join in the fun. Find out more about Jenny at her website.

I talked about a trip to York a few weeks ago to take in the premiere of a new documentary called A Day in the Sun by Brian Plow about the thriving art scene and arts renaissance taking place in our neighboring city to the west. You can read my full review here.

We also chatted about how performing arts groups are dealing with the limited number of dedicated venues in Lancaster by producing performances in found spaces. Tellus 360, an environmentally friendly furniture store that focuses on reclaimed wood, is hosting national acts in their showroom, concerts and theater events have been held at The Candy Factory, a co-working office, and bands and other groups are producing their own shows at The Community Room above Prince St. Cafe. There are also now six house concert series in Lancaster! We explored what this could mean for the area.

Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart are a singer-songwriter couple from Nashville, TN who visited Lancaster earlier this month to perform at a Wood Stove House concert to benefit our friends at Bridge of Hope National. Stacey and Mark have been performing together for 20 years and spend over 270 days a year on the road playing in theaters, coffee houses, house concerts, and listening rooms.

In the late 1990s they began to carve out their own version of the music business first by releasing all of their records on their own independent record label called Gearle Records, and later by taking over all booking and management operations. They are a self-sustaining DIY operation who consistently navigate the modern folk and listening room movement year after year. I caught up with Stacey and Mark just before their house concert in Lancaster to chat about life on the road and their latest album, Dedication.

Lancaster Community Gardens

Lancaster Community Gardens is looking to raise a few bucks so they can drill a well at the Wheatland Middle School community garden project so the garden has a constant supply of water. The project at Wheatland currently covers 17,000 square feet, but they hope to expand it to several acres in the coming years. Water is critical! The well will cost between $3,000 to $4,000; $1,000 has been donated already.

Join them on Thursday August 9th at the Elks Club in downtown Lancaster for a great night of music and conversation. Admission is a mere $10. Dawes at Long’s Park – July 2012

Judy Smith and Rich Low from the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation join me for a conversation about the amphitheater and their legendary summer concert series. Judy is the Executive Director and Rich is serving his second term as the foundation’s Music Director.

It’s been well over a year since I talked with Oliver about his music. At that time, this band was only a part-time collaboration between friends. Now The Stray Birds is the primary focus for all three members. It was a real pleasure to have an opportunity to chat with the band and preview a few of the tracks from the new record before they head out on a national tour that will carry them through the rest of the summer and well into the fall.

The band won Best Indie Band of the year back in February 2012 at the Tri State Indie Music Awards at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, they toured the south this spring with a stop at SXSW to showcase at Rachel Ray’s house party, and are now recording a full length album with Philly producer Bill Moriarty. Moriarty’s production credits include Dr. Dog, Hoots and Hellmouth, and the Swimmers among many more. Toy Soldiers recently released a three-song digital EP called Tell the Teller as a prelude to the new album and coming up this week on June 16, you can catch them for a show at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia.

Chet Williamson from Creative Works of Lancaster returns this week with another installment of CODPIECE, Chet’s look at classic and sleeper films that you really need to check out if you haven’t already. In this episode Chet takes a look at “horse operas”. The classic film is High Noon (1952) starring Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, and Thomas Mitchell. The sleeper is the 2008 western Appaloosa, which stars the film’s writer and director, Ed Harris. Co-stars include Viggo Mortensen and Renee Zellweger.

JP Harris from JP Harris and the Tough Choices makes country music…period. Their new album I’ll Keep Calling (Cow Island Records) is filled with songs about whiskey and women, honky tonkin’ good times, unfortunate tattoos,  and of course, love gone bad. He’s had quite a life and I was lucky enough to get a chance to talk with him about it here in Lancaster, PA a couple weeks ago during a stop on their extensive spring and summer tour in support of the new album.

We recently partnered with our friends at Tri State Indie to bring you a new Wood Stove House Artist Spotlight series. We’ll be periodically posting 5 to 10 minute podcast episodes on Tri State’s website highlighting some of our favorite independent music from around the country. Tri State Indie is your online source for independent music news covering local, regional, and national acts every day, and live at over 40 festivals a year.

The Kalob Griffin Band, otherwise known as KGB performed a rockin’ set on the World Cafe Live stage for the 2012 Tri State Indie Music Awards back in February. That night they also walked as the Best Philly Indie Band of the year. On June 1st KGB returns to the World Cafe Live stage this time to celebrate the release of their brand new album June Found a Gun. Tickets are on sale now.
