JP Harris from JP Harris and the Tough Choices makes country music…period. Their new album I’ll Keep Calling (Cow Island Records) is filled with songs about whiskey and women, honky tonkin’ good times, unfortunate tattoos, and of course, love gone bad. He’s had quite a life and I was lucky enough to get a chance to talk with him about it here in Lancaster, PA a couple weeks ago during a stop on their extensive spring and summer tour in support of the new album.

We recently partnered with our friends at Tri State Indie to bring you a new Wood Stove House Artist Spotlight series. We’ll be periodically posting 5 to 10 minute podcast episodes on Tri State’s website highlighting some of our favorite independent music from around the country. Tri State Indie is your online source for independent music news covering local, regional, and national acts every day, and live at over 40 festivals a year.

The Kalob Griffin Band, otherwise known as KGB performed a rockin’ set on the World Cafe Live stage for the 2012 Tri State Indie Music Awards back in February. That night they also walked as the Best Philly Indie Band of the year. On June 1st KGB returns to the World Cafe Live stage this time to celebrate the release of their brand new album June Found a Gun. Tickets are on sale now.

Ducky and the Vintage is a Harrisburg based rock band with a brand album called Flowers. Frontman Ducky Duke made a big splash earlier this year with an appearance on the NBC television program called The Voice. Although he didn’t make it through the first on screen audition, he caught ear of the show’s host Carson Daly and was invited to make an appearance on Last Call. Aside from music, Ducky keeps busy with his visual art. Keep up with Ducky on Facebook and ReverbNation.

ATWS #56: Hope For Agoldensummer and CODPIECE

Hope For Agoldensummer is an Athens, GA based trio that has been built up over the last ten years around the beautiful harmonies of sisters Claire and Page Campbell. They have a brand new album called Life Inside the Body that will be available for everyone on May 1st. Hope visited Lancaster last week to perform at a Wood Stove House concert while on a tour of the Northeast to support the new album. The band is made up of sisters Claire and Page Campbell along with multi-instrumentalist Patrick Morales from the Athens band Viking Progress. We sat down before the show to chat about the new album and what has inspired the sisters over the years.

Our good friend Chet Williamson from Creative Works of Lancaster returns this week with another installment of CODPIECE, Chet’s look at classic and sleeper films that you really need to check out…or re-check out, as it were. In this episode Chet sheds some light on screwball comedies. The classic film is Bringing Up Baby (1938) starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant and the sleeper is the 1988 baseball comedy Bull Durham starring Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon.

Keith Wilson (aka Saint Narcissus) is an author, songwriter, and former front man for the Lancaster area indie rock band, Movies With Heroes. Keith’s first novel, Geillan: A Prisoner’s Tale will be officially released on May 1 by Ecco Qua Press in Boston, Massachusetts.

I caught up with Keith just before his performance at a Mosaic event in downtown Lancaster to celebrate the release of the novel. You can find the book on Facebook or Amazon, among many other online retailers.

The LAUNCH Music Conference is right around the corner. On April 26, 27 and 28, over 300 bands will be performing in downtown Lancaster on 20 stages in 11 venues. During the day, musicians and other music industry professionals can attend the conference workshops at the Lancaster convention center and then starting in early evening hit the streets to catch all of the showcases all over town. ATWS #54: Adam Lauver

Adam Lauver is an actor and a writer. His resume is filled with projects in both theater and film. From 2007 to 2009 Adam was part of the sketch comedy troupe Happy Time Explosion Show before relocating to Boston where he acted in his first feature film, Heavy Times. Later this month on April 27-29, Happy Time Explosion Show is back with a new show at the Ware Center in downtown Lancaster that is being produced by Creative Work of Lancaster. I caught up with Adam to learn more about Happy Time and his work both in Boston and here in Lancaster.

Broken Fences, a Pittsburgh duo featuring Guy Russo and Morgan Erina will be releasing their debut full-length album on June 1 at a release party at Club Cafe in Pittsburgh. The Fences were featured on Around the Wood Stove episode #30 back in May 2011. Singer-songwriter, Dave Lefever joins me today on Around the Wood Stove for a sneak preview of his upcoming album, Everywhere You Come From. Dave has been a big part of the Lancaster, PA music scene for years as a member of The Cultivators and as a solo artist. The album was produced by Chad Kinsey at The Glittering Cave in Lancaster and will be available in late May. No official release date has been set but we’ll keep you posted with details.

Wood Stove House favorites Kingsfoil, the Central PA pop-rock band announced last week that long time drummer Joe Cipollini has decided to step down. They also announced that Joe will be replaced by Frankie Muniz, best known as “Malcolm” from the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle that ran for seven seasons until 2006. The band recently completely recording a new album, their second with Nashville producer Dustin Burnett. No word yet on when that record will be available. You can hear a full interview with Kingsfoil’s Jordan Davis and Tristan Martin on Around the Wood Stove episode #23 from February 2011.

In more music news, congratulations to Dana Alexandra and our friends in Toy Soldiers for being featured on Paste Magazine’s “List of the Day” in an article called 11 Pennsylvania Bands You Should Listen to Now. According to the article, “Singer/songwriter Dana Alexandra is a Top 40 secret weapon waiting to explode.” Check out Dana’s interview on Around the Wood Stove from earlier this year on episode #42. And look for a full length interview with Toy Soldiers in the months to come.

ATWS #52: Ben Rothermel

Ben Rothermel is a young hard-working singer-songwriter from right here in Lancaster, PA who pours his whole heart and soul into his music. He released his first full length album, Blue or Green, during the summer of 2011.

Ben will soon be releasing a digital pay-what-you-will album called Basement Sessions. The songs were recorded in his basement during many midnight hours while his family slept overhead. According to Ben, “the songs on the record were burning a hole in me trying to escape and this album is them escaping in the rawest form. It’s an extremely personal lo-fi album with most of the songs precluded by personal anecdotes. To me, Basement Sessions is four things: Personal, Simple, Lo-Fi, and Perseverance.” Starting next week, he’ll be releasing one song per day online with the full project available on April 14. It’s almost time for the fourth annual LAUNCH Music Conference right here in Lancaster, PA. By day LAUNCH is a music conference for artists and music industry professionals to network and attend workshops about all aspects of working in the music business. By night Lancaster becomes home for performances by over 200 bands in just three nights. ATWS #51: Hart Heiden and CODPIECE

Hart Heiden is an actor and writer who’s originally from Lancaster, but has been living and working in Los Angeles for the past couple years. I caught up with Hart over the holidays while he was in town visiting family to chat about his transition from a Lancaster to the University of Pittsburgh, to following his dreams out to LA. Since this interview Hart has been working the pilot for a new television series called The Dark Son.

We’re introducing a new segment to the program called CODPIECE featuring our good friend Chet Williamson from Creative Works of Lancaster. Chet takes a look at two films, one classic and one sleeper, that you really need to check out…or re-check out, as it were. In this episode Chet features Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and the 1986 Michael Mann film, Manhunter. Chet will be checking in from time-to-time bringing you a fresh look at various rare and classic films.

The Wood Stove House is proud to announce Play Grounds: Theater on Site, our latest public theater event scheduled for the weekend of May 5th and 6th. Three short plays have been written by area playwrights Nick Lantz, Erich Goldstein and Kevin Ressler and the directors, Vicky Lantz, Nelly Torres, and Lydia Brubaker are busy casting.

The plays were written specifically for three locations in Lancaster City. The audience will gather at the first site, Lemon Street Market, take in the first play and then walk to the next site, Shreiner-Concord Cemetery, just in time for the next play. The final of the three plays will be held in front of Fulton Elementary School. All three plays will be performed a few times over that weekend as part of Lancaster’s ArtWalk:

ATWS #50: The Kilmaine Saints

The Kilmaine Saints have been bringing Superior Celtic Rock to Central Pennsylvania and beyond since 2009. A year later they released their first full-length CD, The Good, The Plaid, and The Ugly and have since performed on some big stages with some of the biggest bands in the Celtic music world. They’ve played hundreds of shows in pubs and venues in the northeast and midwest including several large Irish festivals like Pipes in the Valley, Celtic Fling, ShamrockFest, Annapolis Irish Festival and the Wildwood Irish Weekend. Lead vocalist Brendan Power and fiddler Liz Mallin joined me for a chat at the Candy Factory in downtown Lancaster during March Madness 2012.

In other news from around the wood stove, Philadelphia songwriter Geron Hoy released a full length album last week called Lunatic, which is now available online right here!

The Wood Stove House is cookin’ up a new theatre project for the weekend of May 5 & 6 (Art Walk Weekend in Lancaster, PA). Details will be announced next week!

Mosaic is a collaborative network of volunteers with a passion for the arts, who come together to put on some amazing events in the city of Lancaster, PA. On today’s program, we bring you conversations from the Mosaic February 2012 concert featuring Oceans in Love, SisterBrother, and Saint Elouise. I checked in with the bands before the show and caught up with Mosaic founder Nick Francis to chat about the vision of organization.

Mark DeRose is a really nice guy. He also happens to be a fantastic musician and the front man of Mark DeRose & The Way Home. Their latest album, Carolina Smile, was produced by Eddie Jackson and released on Radio Vibe Records in 2011. It has also been nominated for a 2012 TriState Indie Music Award for best album artwork. I recently caught up with Mark to talk about the album, the band, and his experiences working with Eddie Jackson.

He later became a corporate sales trainer for a national multi-million dollar company. The Ultimate Mistake Many Artists Make

There is only one mistake from which a creative cannot recover.

Her novel flopped: recoverable.
He went bankrupt: recoverable.
She ‘went up’ on her lines onstage: recoverable (pride damaged is most likely healthy).
The album tanked: recoverable.

We’ve all heard numerous quotes from inventors, entrepreneurs, presidents and inspirational giants about the value of failure.

And most of those sayings hold tremendous merit. Failing prepares us for success. Failure is a teacher and motivator. Lesson learned. Improve. Progress.

So what’s the ‘unrecoverable’ sin? The costly mistake that many artists make?

Not calling yourself an artist.

Pretention Confession

Confession: I sometimes feel pretentious calling myself an ‘artist.’ I superimpose judgement from others when I say it. Maybe I’m paranoid. I know I shouldn’t care, but at times, I do.

It may play out something like this:

Them: What do you do?

Me: I’m an artist.

Them: Cool.

What I Think They’re Thinking: Well well well. So does that mean you don’t have a job. Really, just level with us. Tell us what’s really going on here.

Or…

Them: What do you do?

Me: I’m an artist.

Them: Oh.

What I Think They’re Thinking: Fancy. Way to go champ. You’re an artist. How’s that workin’ out for ya? Collecting unemployment?

Or what about this one…

Them: So whaddya do?

Me: I’m a corporate sales trainer (secretly thinking ‘why don’t I tell them I’m an artist’).

Them: Sales huh?

What They’re Actually Thinking: Hmmm. He kinda looks like an artist of some kind.

Fear can’t keep us from admitting who we are. We are artists.

For the Hungry Artist

I hate the term ‘starving artist.’ It’s weak and filled with a poverty mindset.

The truth is, at my core, I am a hungry artist. I want to do, say, and create things that make people feel something. Because you’re reading this, you are too. You are a hungry artist.

We feel the call to the numb. To those that have been afraid to call themselves ‘artist.’ To those that are watching others create while they merely consume.

As artists, we live under the truth that our creativity matters and (at some point) must be shared.

We are the hungry artists. Our creativity comes to good. Our work brings change.

My blog has been a tool to carry me through my own silly judgements of myself and others. The writing frees me to create as I connect with other creatives working through the same journey.

Peter Mayer is a singer-songwriter from Stillwater, MN who recently visited Central Pennsylvania to perform a concert at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lancaster. Peter’s nine-album catalog spans two decades and features music about the interconnectedness of the human journey and the mysteries of the world. Jonathan Burns is a touring comedian, magician, and contortionist based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Jonathan puts on a wild show filled with everything from knife juggling, to magic tricks, to taking off his underwear without taking off his pants…all sprinkled with lighthearted interactive humor for people of all ages and all walks of life. ATWS #44: Darry Miller and The Veil

Darry Miller is a pop/rock songwriter from Central Pennsylvania. In only two years, Darry has transformed himself from an acoustic solo artist to the front man of the five-piece rock band, Darry Miller and the Veil. The band recently released Grip Your Seat, a three-song EP, produced by Nashville producer, Dustin Burnett, most known in the regional music scene for his work with Kingsfoil and Dana Alexandra.

I enjoyed an opportunity on a snowy Saturday afternoon to sit down with Darry at the Wood Stove House to chat about the songs on Grip Your Seat and to hear about his experiences working in Nashville with Dustin Burnett.

ATWS #43: Dr. Amanda Kemp

Dr. Amanda Kemp is the founder and Artistic Director of Theatre for Transformation a touring theatre company from Lancaster, PA that focuses on Black History and provides opportunities for both the company and the audience to open their hearts and minds and experience new perspectives.

Amanda joined me for a delightful conversation about her own transformation back in 2006 when she began her shift from the world of academia to the world of theatre. Her story is one of inspiration to honestly seek to discover our inner drive, passion, and calling, and ultimately to set out on a journey to live that calling.

Theatre for Transformation will be performing two one-act plays at Millersville University’s Ware Center in downtown Lancaster on Thursday, January 26 (pay what you can – donations at the door) and Saturday, January 28 ($15). Both shows start at 7:30 pm.

ATWS #42: Dana Alexandra

Dana Alexandra is a pop singer and songwriter who is making quite a splash in Central Pennsylvania and beyond. Her latest album, Wash Your Mouth Out, was recently listed in the top five local albums of 2011 by Helen Leicht at WXPN in Philadelphia. Dana was also featured at an WXPN Free at Noon concert at the World Cafe Live back in September.

While taking some time off from her busy performing schedule, I had a chance to chat with Dana about her transition from a solo acoustic singer-songwriter to a pop singer with a big sound courtesy of Nashville producer, Dustin Burnett.

2011 has been a year of change and experimentation for the Wood Stove House. We produced our first experimental theater event called Lancaster’s 24 Hour Plays. We promoted a series of house concerts outside of the Wood Stove House in homes around Lancaster County. We began to expand woodstovehouse.com beyond a podcast site, offering a forum for blog posts and guest writers from around the country to chime in on their creative inspiration and experiences. We also expanded the format of Around the Wood Stove. We experimented with three threads for the show. There’s the standard music interview where we focus on the creative process behind an artist’s recent album. There’s also an open conversation format talking with people from all performing arts disciplines about their projects and inspiration. And we introduced the brand new Artist Spotlight, a quick snapshot of a recent album that we’d love to share with the world.

2012 will continue to be a year of change, but will also be a year of FOCUS as we move toward what works and abandon what doesn’t. One thing is for certain, we will continue to support and promote independent performing artists and their creative projects. We’re planning to produce and promote more theater events in the Lancaster area, house concerts and public listening room concerts, and plenty of podcasts so you can get to know the amazing artists that are from Central Pennsylvania or those who travel through on their adventures. We’re also teaming up with other performing arts organizations in the area, like Creative Works of Lancaster, Series 42, and Mosaic Presents to help make our performing arts community even stronger. If you’re not from Central Pennsylvania, we hope you’ll find inspiration in what we’re doing around here, and we hope you’ll share ideas about things happening in your area.

We thank each and everyone one of you who have checked out the Wood Stove House over the past couple years and we welcome your opinions as we move forward. Please leave feedback in the comments, or contact us here. We’d love to hear from you about what you want to see the Wood Stove House become. ATWS #40: Artist Spotlight – Daryl Snider

Daryl Snider is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter who has a passion for peace-building through the arts, particularly through music. He is currently working on a masters degree in that field of study. He has been writing down-to-earth, genuine and hopeful songs filled with imagery and narrative for over a decade, mixing influences from jazz to classical to pop and time spent abroad in Haiti and Brazil.

Having never made a formal album of his original material, Daryl came to the Wood Stove House studio back in the summer of 2010 to begin recording demos of what would eventually become Homemade Toy, his new seven-song EP. Over the next year, we worked with percussionist David Armstrong and fiddler and violist Frances Crowhill Sauder to craft the record, and perform several live shows together under the name Sopa Sol. I had the pleasure of working along side Daryl as producer and bass player on the album and during live shows with the band.

ATWS #39: Artist Spotlight – Campfire OK

Seattle’s Campfire OK is a collection of musicians who came together to help songwriter Mychal Cohen round out an album he was recording in his studio. At the time Cohen was performing in a drum and piano duo but found a far bigger sound with the album that became Campfire OK’s 2010 debut Strange Like We Are. The album is filled with layers of lush ambiance and driving percussion that creates a thick bed for more traditional folk instruments like piano, acoustic guitar, brass, and banjo. This band is far from a folk band, though, falling somewhere around indie rock, but with more natural sounds that would be expected from a band within that genre.

What most drew me to this album, though, are the orchestrated arrangements and Cohen’s powerful vocals, which are even stronger when coupled with layers of rich harmony. The album’s dynamics twist and turn from the bombastic to the delicate. Each musician contributes what often seems like simple parts, but lead to an overall sound that is far greater than the sum.

Sarah Blacker is a singer and songwriter from Boston, Massachusetts who spends a lot of time on the road bringing her unique blend of acoustic rock, folk and jazz to audiences all around the country. She’s no stranger to Central Pennsylvania or the Wood Stove House. She has been a previous guest on the program and performed at the last two My Rural Radio Fall Fests in Southern York County.

In May of 2011 Sarah performed at a Wood Stove House concert in support of her latest album, Come What May. We sat down before the show to talk about her creative process and dig into some of the stories behind the songs on the record.

Moak and his cast of veteran Nashville musicians layer rich ambient textures over Annibale’s insightful pop songs creating nothing short of a masterpiece. Brooke visited Lancaster back in April to showcase at the Launch Music Conference and dropped by the Candy Factory to chat with me about the album and some mutual friends of the Wood Stove House.

ATWS #35: 24 Hour Plays

24 Hour Plays is a concept where writers, directors, actors, etc. write, produce, and perform six short plays over a 24 hour period. A group in New York City have been producing and supporting 24 Hour Plays for over 15 years.

Susanne Mundok, Steve Carlson and I met up at the Wood Stove House to chat about Lancaster’s official 24 Hour Plays event that will be happening in the next couple months! We’re currently establishing some exciting partnerships with other local creative groups and we’re recruiting. Tinderbox is happening September 10th, 2011 at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn and features two dozen female artists who are producing innovative original music. 100% of the festival’s net proceeds benefit organizations involved in empowering the next generation of female artists including Girls Write Now and the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.

In the last year Mike has returned to Lancaster and made quite a splash in the regional music scene. Performing on such coveted stages as the Chameleon Club and Philly’s World Café, Mike plays solo or with any number of friends, including members of notable bands Slimfit and Toy Soldiers. Fire in the Glen is a traditional Irish, Scottish and Maritime pub band from Central Pennsylvania featuring fiddler Tom Knapp, singer and percussionist Aaron Gagne, and yours truly on guitar. Fire in the Glen has been entertaining audiences in the region for over a decade, performing at local pubs, community concerts, private parties, and even the occasional library. The band was formed by Tom Knapp and John Varner in 1999. Indian Summer Jars is a Central Pennsylvania band based around the guitars and harmonies of Sarah Beth and Sarah King. Oliver Craven is a Lancaster area singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who stays very busy performing with several bands here in Central PA and across the country. Most recently Oliver has been touring the country with the Americana band, The Steel Wheels, out of Harrisonburg Virginia.

ATWS #24: Buddy Mondlock

Buddy Mondlock has been a successful songwriter and performer since the late 1980s. Based in Nashville, his songs have been recorded by Nancy Griffith, Guy Clark, David Wilcox, Garth Brooks and many more. In 2002 Buddy teamed up with songwriters Maia Sharp and legend Art Gunfunkel to write and record an album for EMI Manhattan called Everything Waits to be Noticed that led to a national tour with Art’s band. On his own, he has recorded three studio albums include the 2007 release The Edge of the World. In February 2011, Buddy joined us at the Wood Stove House for the first house concert of the new year.

ATWS #23: Kingsfoil

Kingsfoil is a four-piece rock band that formed out of an acoustic duo featuring songwriters Jordan Davis and Tristan Martin. By 2007 the lineup was firm with the addition of drummer Joe Cipollini and bassist Tim Warren. Since then Kingsfoil has become one of the most popular bands in the Central Pennsylvania region. Their latest album, On Our Own Together, which was released in the summer of 2010, has taken their sound to a new level under the direction of Nashville producer, Dustin Burnett. In late December 2010, Jordan and Tristan stopped by the Wood Stove Houseto chat about the band and the making of On Our Own Together.

ATWS #20: Hiram Ring

Hiram Ring is a singer-songwriter and one of the Lancaster music scene’s favorite adopted sons. Raised in Ghana, Africa, Hiram’s family moved to Lancaster during his late teens. He called Lancaster home for several years after attending college in upstate New York, but now he spends most of his time in Singapore where he’s enrolled in a PhD program studying Language Documentation. In 2009 Hiram released his first full-length album, Breathe Deep, which took him on a several-month national tour. Hiram’s music is deeply informed and inspired by his Christian faith, but its pop and folk crossover appeal has garnered strong support from both the Christian and secular music scenes in Central Pennsylvania. While visiting Lancaster over the holidays in December 2010, Hiram stopped by the Wood Stove House to talk about his life and studies in Singapore and to share some new tracks that he’s been working on in his free time.

Creative Works of Lancaster is a relatively new non-profit organization in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with a mission to encourage, support, and produce fresh and independent performing arts productions. Board members Lydia Brubaker and Chet Williamson sat down for a chat about the organization and its first three productions, including the recent holiday comedy show called Yule Laugh. Starting with no physical space, very few resources, and a lot of great ideas, Creative Works are making things happens and adding some unique spice to the creative fabric of Lancaster. Joy Ike is a Pittsburgh based singer-songwriter who spends a lot of time on the road performing everywhere from coffeeshops to music festivals. In November 2010 she visited the Wood Stove House to perform a set at one of our Wood Stove house concerts. Joy’s unique piano style and soul-filled vocals are brilliantly showcased on her latest album, Rumors. Joy sat down in the Wood Stove House studio to chat about Rumors and her life as a professional musician.

Rhyne McCormick has been a singer-songwriter active in the Central Pennsylvania music scene since the mid 1990s. Since 2000, he has released four albums, his latest is a live album recorded in April 2009 at the Capitol Theatre in York, Pennsylvania. Rhyne dropped by the Wood Stove House in November 2010 to discuss the album project and how his career has changed over the years.

Sarah Blacker is a singer and songwriter from Boston, Mass who has spent the last year touring the country in support of her 2009 debut album calledThe Only Way Out is Through. In true DIY form, she funded her record through fan donations and is in the process of raising money to finance a brand new album that is currently in the works. Sarah was visiting Lancaster, PA to perform at a songwriter showcase at the Lancaster Dispensing Company.

Caleb Hawley comes to us from New York City, by way of his automobile, where he spends a lot of time these days touring the country to share his music and stories with audiences big and small. He is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in Jazz Composition, but now spends his time writing guitar-based soulful pop-music. He’s an award winning songwriter and a soft spoken guitar virtuso with a huge voice.

Caleb visited Lancaster in October 2010 to headline a Wood Stove House concert. I sat down with him before the show to talk about his 2009 release, Steps, and his brand new album We All Got Problems.

ATWS #11: Fil Campbell

Fil Campbell is a singer and songwriter from the border village of Belleek in Northern Ireland. Fil was visiting Lancaster to head line a Wood Stove House concert in late September 2010 while on a two-week US tour. Fil’s latest CD Songbirds, released in 2005, is a complement to a six-part television series by the same name that celebrates the lives and songs of five women from different parts of Ireland who sang songs that everyone knew in the early to mid-twentieth century. They became internationally famous and paved the way for many traditional Irish singers who followed. The TV series had a successful run on RTE, Ireland’s channel One.

Joining me for the interview is Tom Knapp, the Lancaster-area Irish fiddler, and my friend and partner in the traditional Celtic duo, Fire in the Glen. Tom and I chatted with Fil about her life in music, the process of making the Songbirds project, and her time on the road as a touring musician. Check out Tom’s article about Fil at Rambles.net.

In this show we take a look inward at an emerging platform for artistic expression: podcasting, a medium that has allowed shows like Around the Wood Stove to exist, develop, and reach an audience using Internet based technology.

The Lancast is a hyper-local weekly Podcast based here in Lancaster, Pennsyvlania. It deals with a variety of topics through conversations with politicians, business owners, artists, and public figures. David Moulton and Daniel Klotz, the hosts of the Lancast, recently joined me in the Wood Stove House for a conversation about the history of the Lancast, how podcasting is transforming the way we receive information, the effects of podcasting on traditional media, and what it means to get in the game and produce your own podcast.

ATWS #7: The Beggar Folk

The Beggar Folk is a five-piece band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania that was built around the husband and wife duo, Josh and Trista Lamb. Josh and Trista moved to Lancaster in the summer of 2009 after first visiting the LAUNCH Music Conference in April of that year. Their sound is mellow and introspective and layered with beautiful harmonies and a complimentary string section made up of two violins and cello. All of the music on today’s show was recorded live here at the Wood Stove House studio in Lancaster.

Indian Summer Jars is an acoustic folky-bluesy-rock trio based in south central Pennsylvania featuring the lush harmonies of Sarah Beth and the real Sarah King, backed by percussionist Bill Lanphier. They played one of the very first official Wood Stove House concerts back in October 2009 and came back to the Wood Stove House in May 2010 to chat about the band and record some brand new tracks Live in the Wood Stove studio.

ATWS #5: Mennonite Artist Project

The Mennonite Artist Project is a network of creative people with Mennonite ties. Members work in all artistic disciplines. Online it’s a social media type website. In person it’s gatherings and meetups between real human beings, talking and sharing ideas about what it means to be an artist, particularly an artist with some kind of connection to the Mennonite faith. As of today there are over 500 MAP members registerd on the web, who are either practicing Mennonites, ex-Mennonites, artists who were raised Mennonite or those who became Mennonite later in life.

Kim Stauffer and Renee Miller, two of the five MAP board members, visited Lancaster in May 2010 to celebrate the release of a new MAP compilation CD called Hill Valley.

An interview with singer-songwriter and guitarist, Jason Wilber, who made a tour stop in Lancaster to perform at a Wood Stove House concert in January 2010. Jason is the long-time guitarist for John Prine, but tours as a solo singer-songwriter and hosts a weekly radio show in his hometown of Bloomington, IN when he’s not on the road with John.
