Every year Christmas Island is taken over by millions of red crabs, and this one is no exception.

Their journey across the small Australian Island is much anticipated by many, and each year tourists gather to watch as a band of red moves towards its Indian Ocean spawning ground.

This year little creatures began their trek across the 52-square-mile landmass in mid-November.

To help ensure they make it from the rainforest to the ocean and back, local authorities block roads as needed, monitor the special crab bridges, and put up barriers that help the crustaceans stay on track.

Said one regular migration watcher, "It's a sea of red…The sound, you can imagine millions and millions of crabs sort of crawling across the island, so the sound is quite extraordinary…People plan for years to come and see this."

Advanced travel preparation, however, can be tricky.

Exactly when the crabs decide to get moving varies from year to year and can happen any time between September and January.

Typically, the beginning of rainy season is an indication that the migration will soon commence.

As they’re incredibly sensitive to sunlight, the crabs can’t take to land until there’s a good amount of moisture in the air and ample cloud cover over their heads.

Descending into the depths of Siberia's mystery crater: Experts explore 98ft-wide hole to learn more about its origins

When frozen, the accessible parts of the crater are around 54ft (16.5 metres) deep with a 98ft (30 metre) diameter

Scientists used climbing gear to reach a lake of frozen water that had formed at around 34ft (10.5 metres) deep

Is thought the crater was formed when heating from underground fissures released gas hydrates causing blowout

This is said to be the same phenomenon that may have led to the Bermuda Triangle in the Atlantic Ocean

Experts are now monitoring modern-day and archived satellite images to check for similar holes

A total of three craters have been found in the northern Russian region, but their origins are still unknown

It is arguably the most unique formation of this kind: a thin layer of hydrogen sulfate separates the saltwater from the fresh water above it, allowing scuba divers to swim along this underwater creation, which looks a lot like a regular river would on the ground. There are even fallen trees and leaves on both sides of the "shores", making this seascape look all the more surreal!

Cenotes are actually deep natural pits, or sinkholes, characteristic of Mexico, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath.
“Enter Pyongyang” is another stunning collaboration between city-branding pioneer JT Singh and flow-motion videographer Rob Whitworth. Blending time-lapse photography, acceleration and slow motion, HD and digital animation, they have produced a cutting‐edge panorama of a city hardly known, but one emerging on the visitor’s landscape as North Korea’s opening unfolds.
