Yucaipa Fire Approaches Houses in Chapman Heights

The fire currently burning on the north side of Oak Glen Road appears to be approaching the approaching the houses along Blue Grass Road in the Chapman Heights housing development. CDF firefighters are out in force, and there is a helicopter and fire-retardant-dropping plane trying to battle it back.

I hope those of you that live in the neighborhood below the Jerry Lewis soccer fields are safe.

Yucaipa Music & Nightlife: January 2-8

It's the first week of 2009, the sun is shining and there are things to do and places to go! Actually, there is a bit of a lull in entertainment after the holidays, but things should be picking up again over the next couple of weeks.

And in local music news:
According to the News Mirror, local band Idasas (featuring Yucaipan Rikki Sterling who got an on-camera intervention for his drinking problem) was on a reality show called Rock Bottom on "National TV" back in October on upstart music channel Fuse TV (channel 120 on our Time Warner cable). You can watch several Idasas clips from the show on the FuseTV web site, including a bit called "People Stripping" (which is PG-13) and a discussion with their old manager & promoter. There's a bit more on their appearance published last October in the Press-Enterprise. There's no indication on their Myspace profile where Idasas will be playing gigs, but they've shown up fairly often at Angel's, so keep an eye on the schedule if you'd like to hear them play (And please News Mirror editor, proofread - the band's URL is not myspace/idasa, it's www.myspace.com/idasas. And you could have actually mentioned what station the show was on - it took me 30 seconds of Googling to find the info. Or, you know, your reporter could have asked.)

Happy New Year!

I know you can't tell from my blogging, but I just got back from visiting my parents up in the Bay Area for Christmas. I had a lovely holiday, but it's nice to be home. Tonight we are going over to a small party at a friend's house. We might drop into a local drinking establishment to see a couple of other friends who are playing in the band. Nothing too fancy or flashy, just ringing in 2009 with people we care about.

I hope you and yours have a fun and safe New Year's Eve!

Wednesday night we move from 2008 to 2009, and there are lots of ways to celebrate. You can gather together with your family and friends or you can go out for an end-of-the-year party. Casual or dressy, loud music or quiet cheer, there is something for everyone.

Below I've listed a few of the local options for live music on New Year's Eve. There are fewer than I expected that I could find details for so I went a bit further afield than Yucaipa - feel free to add more listings in the comments.

So Christmas has almost arrived - have you finished your shopping yet? If you haven't, you could head out to Target or Barnes & Noble or one of the department stores down in Redlands or San Bernardino. Sure you'll find something there, but why not pick up something local? Something that is uniquely Yucaipa? And as a bonus you won't have to deal with traffic or parking.

A few suggestions:

Chocolates

Most people would welcome a gift of fine candy - I know I would - and Granlund's is the place to get it. Or perhaps a gift certificate that could be used for ice cream when the weather gets warmer.

Pie, pie, pie

As long as there isn't snow, it's a quick drive up to Oak Glen to buy a pie or other applacious goodies.

Phat Choppers Gear

If bikes are your giftees thing, she or he might like gear from Phat Choppers.

Handmade Jewelry or Art

It's too late to place an order to be shipped, but the handmade items created by Yucaipa's Etsy sellers might be available for direct purchase. I especially like bshaw's sterling sliver paisley pendent and this screen print by BlackDogInk.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas . . .

I can't believe it's snowing - and even sticking a bit! It sounds like the kids down the street are having a blast, even though it's pretty damp, rather than fluffy. Good for icy snowballs, that.

According to weather reports tomorrow's high temperature is supposed to be about 50, so I supposed it will all be gone by mid-morning. Oh well.

Yucaipa Music & Nightlife: December 12-18

There's lots to do this weekend!

Saturday is the annual Yucaipa Christmas Parade. It starts on California street at noon, and will head down Yucaipa Boulevard to City Hall. Santa will be on the last float.

Saturday is also Operation Santa Claus, run by the Yucaipa Police Department. Kids are welcome at any of five locations to meet Santa and receive candy from the PD's float (I guess no tossed candy during the parade this year).
The stops:

5:20 PM at Dunlap Elementary School
6:00 PM at Von's Parking Lot
6:45 PM at the Bryant & Oak Glen Road Stater Bros.
7:30 PM at Sail Drug
8:15 PM at the County Line Road 99cent Store parking lot.

The VFW (12235 California St.) will hold it's annual party for children immediately after the parade. Santa will appear at 3pm. The pulic is welcome.

Storm Troopers Invade Yucaipa!

OK, not really. But the 501st Legion - aka "Vader's Fist" - will be appearing at Chapman Heights Elementary on Wednesday, November 19th from 6pm-8pm. The event is "Family Night" for the school's first ever Book Fair. It sounds like a fun combination of books and SF - two of my favorite things!

The Book Fair itself is running from Nov 17-21 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Wow, third week of November already. There's not too much going on this weekend, but now is also the time to purchase tickets for events in December - Christmas events are already starting to sell out!

And on a serious note, there are lots of people in our area who could use a helping hand. KFROG and Stater Bros. have teamed up for a holiday food drive. You can drop off canned food donations inside the Stater Bros. on Bryant or Yucaipa Blvd through November 26th. KFROG will be on-site of the Stater Bros. on Bryant on Wednesday, November 19th from 11am-2pm. There will also be a food drive for the I.E. Needy at Angel's Roadhouse on Saturday, November 15th from noon-3pm.

Massive Earthquake Tomorrow!

At 10am tomorrow is the Great Southern California Shake Out, in which organizations across SoCal pretend there has been a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the Southern San Andreas Fault. That would be a bad one:

In an earthquake of this size, the shaking will last for nearly two minutes. The strongest shaking will occur near the fault (in the projected earthquake, the Coachella Valley, Inland Empire and Antelope Valley). Pockets of strong shaking will form away from the fault where sediments trap the waves (in the projected earthquake, it would occur in the San Gabriel Valley and in East Los Angeles).

Considering that the San Andreas fault runs near the edge of Yucaipa, we'd definitely be hit hard. It sounds like a regional disaster drill is a good idea.

So be forewarned: are out and about near one of the drill sites tomorrow you may see scattered bodies and emergency vehicles. The closest site to us is the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands, which will also have related presentations about earthquakes (9:30am-1pm).

Loma Linda University Medical Center is also participating in a full scale drill.

So, last weekend we headed out to the Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Patch, and it's well worth the trip if you are willing to battle the traffic jam at the Oak Glen/I-10 interchange. They have great bands playing in the afternoons, the seating is in the shade, and you can even bring a picnic. Can't beat that for free.

Also if apples are your thing, there is still fruit to be picked up in Oak Glen. The Riley's Farm newsletter also says:

As always, in October, we have great music with the Bost Family Traditions singing gospel and bluegrass in the Packing Shed and House & von Arx providing classical and folk in the Colonial Public house.

So get out and enjoy some music this weekend!

West Nile Hits Yucaipa: Beware the bite!

I was a bit dismayed to read the headline in today's News Mirror that the West Nile Virus infection has been confirmed here in Yucaipa - one person is sick and one horse has died. There is no treatment for West Nile Virus infection: unlike bacteria, viruses are not affected by antibiotics. The good news is that less than 1% of people who are infected will develop a severe illness, but among those who do, the fatality rate is between 3% and 15%.

West Nile is transmitted from infected birds to humans by mosquitoes, so the best protection is to not get bit:

Wear insect repellent, especially if you are outside at dusk or dawn.
Make sure there is no stagnant water in your yard
Be sure you have window and door screens that prevent mosquitoes from entering your home

And if you find a dead bird or squirrel, report it via the California dead bird hotline.
