Creeper Basement

Have you ever entered a basement that looks like it is straight out of a horror movie? Like, drains in the floors, peg boards with random tools hanging, walls that look like they have secret compartments and plywood hanging over the areas where victims have tried to claw their way out? I am sure EVERYONE has experienced this at least once...well, our friend now OWNS one of these basements, and in Fairbanks winter, it becomes a perfect place to take over for an Arrogantly Shabby shoot.

As we get older, I see a trend occurring among not only Ruckus and I, but out friends as well. QUALITY over quantity. This extends to the transfer station as well, where we will pick up wool, leather, silks, etc rather than the newest trendy polyester or rayon pants and tops. Its cute, but acrylic? well... I don't see how that will stand the test of time. Yes, this is really happening.

Classic shapes and elements also become more prevalent. A good Leather coat, a day to night transitional purse with no flashy details, and solid layers that make it easy to be warm and stylish in our Alaskan interior.

Snow Days

Ruckus moved into a new cabin a few weeks ago. Being thrifty as she is, she's been scouring the dump for furniture, decor and housewares. We figured that we'd try and show some of them off. Yay or nay? Let us know what you think!

Another super-classic look is a big scarf and a blazer. It's adorable, and can be as feminine or masculine as you want it to be. My favourite look from this shoot; the hat does it for me. The shirt looked ugly as until it was on- the soft smokey-coloured ruffles aren't overbearingly girly, and the peek-a-boo slip is grungy but cute.

Last Child in the Woods

I'm excited about not being the size of an affordable family car anymore. If you see me in public and I'm wearing stretch pants covered in cat hair, give me a break, and enjoy the glorious irony of me having a fashion blog.-Ruckus

That said, it's winter again, and I'm thinking layers and mixed prints. There's a fine balance between layering and "I'm currently living out of my car, thus wearing everything I own at once". I often find myself toeing the line of the latter. And I know we've said it time and again, and life in general would be less exciting if we all could follow our own advice, but : sticking to similar colour families, or at least complimentary ones, and showing enough of your shape to confirm that no, you are not in possession of a bag of cats, will usually help you to look less like a street urchin, and more like you're sauntering the streets of some European city. That might be laying it on a bit thick. But you get the point.

Face nails it again. I love the pairing of boyish boots and plaid with short-shorts. SO cute. (Face here, I think Ruckus and I both agreed, we would like to be able to take every shot, at every photo shoot on a swing. The angle Flatters like no other! Swings, in all bars! PLEASE)

Bare Legs Chunky Shoes

Sitting in a coffee shop waiting with it being below zero outside, I edit and long for the days of this shoot. Bare legs. Chunky Sandals. Man, how come I never realize how glorious it may be outside until it is too late? No, that is a lie, I definitely realize it at the time, it is just that it goes by so fast, I never get to do as much in the glorious weather as I hoped.

Winter is upon us now though, and that just means we get great tights, scarves, boots, and super chunky sweaters. It also means though that the transfer sites are a little more bare, and that the bin men are on top of it a little more, making it all the more sparse. We have at least one more shoot queued up for you, and hopefully it will give us enough time to scrap together some amazing winter looks.

Yes, one again we are using bed sheets, or really any scraps of fabric we can get our grubby hands on, as scarves. I still don't understand why more people don't do this....(we get complimented on scraps a lot. and it always makes me smile to reveal its origins, because snotty people can't take back their compliments...)

Hot Tub Time Machine

Oh man, Alaska is showing us some AMAZING love, and we couldn't be more grateful! This Past weekend, not only did we get an amazing piece written up about us in the Alaska Dispatch, we also got the chance to be apart of Campus Couture, where we were asked to style a runway show of all donated and dumpster clothing to be auctioned off by the Ever Lovely Collette Promiseland in support of the local Fairbanks Gay Straight Alliance (GSA). Everyone who helped support the show, and came out and had a good time... WE thank you all!

So, as a thank you, we decided to end our month hiatus (hiatus is lingo for being a slackass) and give you not only a post today, but also a post next week. And hopefully, not another month before our next one! Today's post was actually the shoot we were doing when the original Fairbanks Daily Newsminer article came out in September.

Ruckus here: I'm not going to pretend to be a bastion of maternity fashion (obvious oxymoron, to anyone who has ever been pregnant...) but a tight-as-shit striped anything seems to be a go. Number one, you look giant anyway, anyone telling you otherwise is a liar, maybe even a snipe, so you might as well own it. Spandex is incredible. The smoothing and lifting capabilities already well known to the mildly lumpy, this pregnant lady appreciated the body-hugging (and surprisingly supportive...) glory of Spandex. And I would NEVER wear a hat like this unless I was playing croquet, FYI.That is all.

Cute looks: Pairing a similar print/colour tie with a button-up, a nice play on a more fancy look. Extra points: if you're in Alaska, and you tuck your shirt in/wear a tie, everyone will wonder what you're up to, and the ladies will notice. No, really, we will.

Summer Lovin'

A few weeks back we did an Arrogantly Shabby roadtrip to Manley. If you haven't been you MUST go; it's a terrific little spot for a quiet weekend. Especially during blueberry season!

Okay, we just wanted to go for a soak, and happened to have some dump clothes with us. I swear. I don't think there is a time when I DON'T have dump clothes on me. Truth time.

Bags of jewelry are one our ultimate favourite finds. Whether costume, junk or silver, you can take pieces apart, put them together differently or even melt 'em down to cast something else if you're so inclined. But usually, earring hooks, pliers and a few jump rings will get you a few new pieces.

Grass Is Greener

Guys, GUYS...IT IS SEPTEMBER. Oh man, how did that happen?! I Mean, this means snow is only weeks away. WEEKS. I just don't know if I am ready... no, I KNOW I am not ready. And not in a 'mentally I am just not ready for the cold' way, but more like in a 'Oh Shit! I have no heating fuel, and still need to fix my bike from summer, and headlights on my car, and get an oil change, and...and...' Kind of way. No Good at all.

So I shall post pictures taken a few weeks ago, so we can all remember the greener times. Yeah, this lush greenness was only a few weeks ago. Seasons, who knew?

Fresh Faces, New Game

I don't want to admit it. I will deny it until there is snow on the ground, and I am freezing in a dress with no tights, but people... it is coming. Winter. Oh Alaska, you tempt me with dreams of summer, and give me a nice solid spring month before going to fall and back to winter...

Enough of that. ENOUGH. To spice up the impending fall months, I have decided to take on new models. Be gentle, for some of them it was their first time. (expect that old pro that is gonna start these pictures off with a bang....)

Sometimes men are afraid of dressing up on a day to day basis, but take it from Kface.... Nothing beats a well put together guy. You will stand out. (especially in Fairbanks...)

Vintage finds are one of the most exciting thing about rummaging through the trash. It never ceases to amaze me what people throw away without a second thought!

Day Drinking, Pt. 2

Generous splash of lemonade (Santa Cruz, in the jars, is CHEAP right now)
A wee splash of either rose syrup or grenadine, if you're just not fancy enough

Moving along.

Lots of early '90s throwback fashion in this post. I thought about a throwback drink recipe, but I don't think anyone drinks grain alcohol and Tang anymore. There are some adorable, update-able elements of '90s style; baggy pants, black leather, floral, denim, flats, shaggy rockstar hair and old man sweaters have all made a comeback. Other things deserve to be forgotten; Stonewashed mom jeans, chunky loafers, crocheted everything. Steer clear.

I'm such a fan of big, bulky accessories and girly prints and fabrics. Also, everyone looks amazing in a wrap dress. Literally, everyone. Even Roseanne. Okay, pushing it.

It's easy to look like Frumps McFrumperton when doing casual; but keep in mind: something has to be fitted, or show a bit 'o skin. Think skinny jeans/baggy sweatshirt, or baggy pants/tight top (but accessorize this one, or you'll look like an extra from a Missy Elliot video).

Men can't go wrong with tartan shirts. Mixing prints is ballsy, and works for the ladies too.

This early '90s looks is so classic; denim, black and floral. Make it lady-like with heels or flats, or tone it down with boots.

LOVE this look; if it's possible for a guy to look artsy and romantic, this nails it. Like, soft enough fabrics that you could roll around in bed or take a nap in it. V-necks are hot. Comfy, ugly sweaters are sexy. This is a true story. This look works for the ladies too!

Day Drinking, Pt. 1

When you're classy as shit, summer means one thing in Alaska: Day Drinking. When there's no fear of hypothermia, just bears, you can while away the 24 hours of sunshine in a shiny, less-than-lucid happiness that only comes from heat + friends + cocktails of choice. Or really good pastries. But that's different.

Summer is for naked legs.
Summer is a time for layers too; add dimension to an old tunic or dress with a lacy skirt slip underneath. It adds texture and sexy boldness without being overly tarty.

On chilly nights, pairing a cute jumper with shorts is classic, comfortable and adorable. Pink and red is an unexpected combination; if you're sick of neons (or you aren't 22 anymore) try pairing primary or bold colours with their softer counterparts for a pop of colour that isn't so punchy.

Listen up boys: Girls like legs. I know, it's gross. Go with it. We never get sick of a man in a stripey sailor shirt and cuffed, tight Bremudas. Never, you hear me? Class it up with a jacket, or keep it casual with a solid-colour button-up or hoodie. Trust me. Hot.

White can be tough to wear. See-through, boring. Dress up a plain white with a cute layer, funky belt, or both. When you're rocking a simple look, a few accessories and some colour goes a long way.

Oh, You say it has been almost 5 months since a post? And there hasn't been an outfit post since November either? MAN, what assholes we can be. BUT, I am here to say that we are back. And The posts are gonna keep on rolling in. Mixing prints always looks pretty badass in my book. The secret? When mixing bold prints stick to the same color grouping, or family of colors.

Our men's outfits constantly prove that you don't have to spend the cash to look fancy as fuck.

...And come'on. Can't a stylist hold onto the thought of summer a bit longer by pairing shorts with wool sweaters and closed to shoes with no socks? AMEN.

I feel like ever since I started having to clear away most of my household goods, and start packing up for my move to Minneapolis, that I have been overwhelmed with large, AWESOME goods at the transfer sites. All these goods in which I cannot take. The transfer site is an evil, evil temptress, I tell you.

Make that House Shine Bitch!

So, Not only do we find badass clothing at the dump, we also come across lots of other ridiculously beautiful things for the house. Above are a variety of blue glass my friend Gina found for me at the dump. They were just sitting in a box, ready to be brought home.

Displays of blue glass always look good. ALWAYS. As with any kind of display, the varying of size and shape makes it more complex and pleasing to the eye.

This was my OH SO BRILLIANT find of the past two weeks. This is just a section of the print of two extremely large swaths of fabric I found. All clean. I believe they were drapes for someone else, I have yet to decide how they shall be used in my new place in Minneapolis. They are def. a grandma print, but if that is what you dig (and It IS what I dig...A LOT) you will score free shit ALL THE TIME at the dump. Keep DEM EYES OPEN.

This last find i did not take with me, and I DO hope someone came across it minutes after I took these pictures and brought it home where it should be. The is GORGEOUS and the possibilities are ENDLESS. Chandelier lighting is a prize to find at the dump, and figuring out the wiring to make them working again can easily be Done. Just ask Ruckus.

Dude, seriously, wiring is SO DAMN EASY.

Why go to a dump, when you can just go to the backyard for a dump-like fashion shoot? Now, don't fret, all the clothing is still VERY MUCH from the transfer sites, I just had a few friends over this tie to my house and decided that the comfort of my own trash infested back yard would work juuust fine.

PS, notice how gorgeous and autumny it is? Time for layers, accessories that actually DO something (hell-o scarves, gloves, socks over tights and leggings!) and earthy, lovely fall colours. Oh, and gratuitous shots of hot male models.

Dress a family of brothers for a funeral

As we've mentioned before, Men's clothing is a bit harder to come by at the dump. I (face) feel this is because men are a lot more unlikely to part with an item after only a few wears, and will instead wear an item of clothing until moths will no longer touch it. Either way, over time we have slowly acquired enough items from the various dumps to do another men's shoot. I happened to stumble upon a treasure trove of men's suit items, and gathered them like I needed to dress a family of brothers for a funeral.

Shit Leopard

I am NOT changing the title, Face. No way, no how.

So I found this. It's a leopard-print polyester chiffon dress. The cut was okay-it has a nipped waist, circle skirt and knotted bustline. The top was a bit..shouldery. I am almost positive this dress was worn by a man. It smelled like it.

The easiest way to make a dress better is to add a belt. Face taught me this. The sleeves were big and baggy, so I tied them with some brown lace and voilà! A cute sweet-heart neckline. This is just a leather skinny belt with a brass dolphin buckle, from the dump. You can't tell, but I'm also wearing long peacock feather earrings that I made. Damn!

This look is so hot. It might look costume-y, and that's cause it IS--but screw it! Leave the house in jeans and a t-shirt everyday, blend in. Or drape a dead raccoon on your body and be remembered! This capelet is vintage, from around the 1940's. I got it on Ebay in a lot of 6 vintage furs for $10. I pinned the dress up with a brooch (the photos of it didn't make sense...) but love it so much I might sew it like that. The shoes are little satin kitten-heel peeptoes, from the dump, a few years ago. The headband is a cheapie beaded one from Forever21, and the beaded bag is an old 60's pouch from Value Village. It was crazy overpriced at $4, but I HAD to have it.

I wanted to include a more casual look, so I tucked that dress into my underwear and called it good. No, really...I totally dig bubble hems these days, and you can get that look from a circle skirt turned/tucked under. Okay, I suppose if you didn't want to tuck it into the old baggy whities, you could pin the hem to a garter belt. Yeah, you should probably do that....The sweater is a crystal and pearl detail GEM SWEATER, 100% cashmere wool, snatched from a clothing swap. The silk kerchief was one of about two dozen I pulled out of a dumpster a few months ago, and the boots were also a dump find- perfect condition too!

There it is: A shit leopard, 3 ways. Now, skip hence, ducks, and figure out that reference!

Kface here. I'm gonna try something new out, and we will see what you all think/how it flows with the rest of what we are doing. I figured, it may be time to show you how we take our dump fashion home with us. Now, not everything we find at the dump and feature in the blog do we take home, most actually stays at the dump for others to find and utilize. On the other hand, I know I personally stop by the dump almost once a day, so there is a lot that I pick up that will never make it to a regular fashion post.

Below I show you a find (actually found by Ruckus) that didn't quite make the last shoot, but I stole to bring home with me. The items I use with the article of clothing are mostly simple accessories from the dump, as well as items I have greedily snatched out of others hands at clothing swaps with my friends. You dig?

Item in Question: This turquoise 80s dress (shoulder pads and all).

Very simple, has a few little stains on the front, otherwise great condition.

Pretty shapeless on a hanger, most people might pass it over.

I use the dress as a top, simply add a black a pencil skirt (snatched quickly out of a trash bag of a friends before others could get their grubby hands on it!) wide belt (dump) and necklace I picked up...somewhere? Cheap custom jewelery is the best.

Belts are one of the best things, and look hard enough and you can simply keep upgrading from one to the next each time you visit a transfer site.

This is where you must remember there are SO MANY possibilities for pieces you spot! If you even slightly like something, snatch it up! Bring it home, try a few things. If it doesn't work...why then simply bring it back to the dump for someone else to try their hand at it!

Back to basics. One of our best shoots in a while, even enduring the soggy day filled with other people's cat liter strew about at the dump (really...clumps on shoes like no other. Why someone feels that can just pour it on the ground, and not dispose of it in the effing DUMPSTER TWO FEET AWAY is beyond me). Either way, we found that the patterns and textures of the fabrics were in full force, which always makes for a good photo shoot!

We realize we don't always show you how we have modified the clothing we use (scissors are a wonderful thing to keep in your car, for last-minute fashion modifications, impromptu-crafting and of course, self-defense), but we are going to try and start. Look for notes in the captions if we altered a piece to wear it in a unique way.

The texture of this skirt was so delightfully 70's, it would pair really well with wedges and some thick tights for fall!

This gorgeous fabric is from the side of an old rotty couch. It seems like such a shame, right? But this is why you bring scissors, ladies! Snip the pretty/useable/non-mildewy fabric for use as pillows, wall hangings or what-have-you. But be careful not to defile a nice couch that someone could use!

One of my favourite looks is short-shorts with little man-boots; it really toms up an outfit. A fun juxtaposition is something crazy feminine on top, like an embroidery-detail tank or floral button-up. A perfect Fairbanks summer look!

The Gods Must Be Crazy

As I sit and write this post, the weather outside is too amazing to explain, blue skies, blaring sun, and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This weather began about two days ago, or exactly two days AFTER we shot this post. We went to this post tired, sick, heavily medicated (in Ruckus' case) and angry about the weather...and I think we conveyed every ounce in our facial expressions. This time we weren't modeling... we were channeling our frustrations with Alaska weather...I guess the Gods took notice.
