I have my own style. I like it...I love it, but sometimes I need to break away from it to discover new things.

A little extreme for me, but it's new, it's different, it's..it's exciting! I never lost the love of my own personal style, I just wanted to dip my toes into something new.

Sometimes you need to step out of your comfort zone, and that's what I did.

Meet Carol Davidson of Crave Fitness and Wellness. A self proclaimed health documentary nerd, she has studied and trained in physical fitness and healthy living.

I visited Carol on a Thursday evening. She showed me her equipment and talked to me about future work shops she was putting together.

Weights, bicycles, rowing, balls, she's got it. Nothing is over complicated or overly digital either. Your sweat and determination seems be the main source of power here.

Why did you become a personal trainer?
I've always worked out and lived an active lifestyle. I love the feeling of being healthy and fit and wanted to help others who also want to feel that way but are unsure as to where to start. The fun of seeing people transform their mindset in just a few sessions and watch their confidence grow as they do things they never thought the could do feeds my passion for what I do as a trainer.

What has helped you the most in the success of your business?
Word of mouth referrals from my clients has truly made my business grow through the years. I've found that for me, advertising dollars are not well spent and hard to track real results. It really means a lot to me when my clients feel their experience with me is valuable enough to share with their friends and family.

What is the biggest obstacle of being a small buisness?
I love owning a small business, but the biggest obstacle for me is finding the time to everything! Beyond training there is a lot of administrative duties that are not my strength but I'm learning to ask for help from the right people!

No. But I will this year!

What would you like to tell your clients and the community about you, your business, and small businesses in general?
To my clients I say Thank You! I couldn't exist and continue to grow without your loyalty and referrals. To folks in the community who may not know what I'm about I would love for you to experience a complimentary workout with me and find out for yourself. My goals as a business owner is to connect with you on personal level and get in to your soul and help you stretch beyond your perceived limits and celebrate with you as your reach your goals, however big or small they may be.

Any final thought you would like to share?
I always encourage my clients to embrace where they are and look ahead to their goals with optimism and success. Fitness and wellness is a life long journey. It starts with small changes over time an the end results are life changing!

Fresco's

Breakfast AND a night life at one place? Yep! On the corner of Lemon and S Kentucky Ave in downtown Lakeland is a restaurant called Fresco's. Walk through the double doors on the corner enjoy a different kind of experience.

Somewhat on a regular basis I call in my breakfast order on the way in to work.

"Thank you for calling Fresco's this is Jordan."
"Hi, Jordan, it's Amber."
"I gotcha, Amber, see ya in a few."

That quick phone call is me placing this order:

The meat lovers platter, no eggs, home potatoes, biscuit, butter and strawberry jelly.

Some may say I just have no variety in my life, or maybe I order too much. How about, they care enough to know my order. I have gone over a month at times (ouch I know, but I can't indulge every week), and yet it never fails that they know what I want and how I want it.

Ooo, breakfast is awesome and all, however what about lunch? Yum. I like the loaded quesadilla and the Monte Cristo.

I did mention a night life, right? How about live music, and an upscale dining experience? Try the California egg rolls, my favorite appetizer.

Now we have to talk about Fresco's Speak Easy...Fresco's Underground. This venue is awesome for parties and live music.

Two Hens and a Hound

Ellen Simms and Terisa Glover

If you walk down town on S Kentucky Ave more than likely you're going to pass by a pair of rocking chairs. Two Hens and a Hound provide a nice place to sit to read, people watch, or play a guitar. I went to visit Ellen and Terisa a couple of weeks ago for this spotlight project. Friendly as always, and cracking jokes.

Custom framing, and I do mean custom, Lakeland souvenirs, and local art pieces are sold here. They can do pretty much anything from framing pictures, restoring old photos (outsourced by a local retoucher) and creating shadow boxes for treasured items.

This past month the Two Hens and a Hound lost Sparky. If you walked by the store front earlier last month you would have seen flowers, cards, and pictures of Sparky. The local community felt the loss almost as much as Terisa and Ellen. She was friendly and sweet. Always ready to take a pat on the head and a belly rub. She played a big role for Two Hens and a Hound, she was the Hound, after all. She made children and adults alike smile. Never a mean growl or timid demeanor came from her. She accepted everyone for who they were. Young, old, rich, or poor, she greeted you with a face that brightened the gloomy days.

Next time you pass by those rocking chairs pop inside and say hello. You may find what you're looking for, even if it's just a friendly smile.

How did you meet and how long have you known each other?
We first met officially when Terisa and Sparky opened The General Store (2007). Ellen had Fast Frame (opened 2004), and welcomed the newbies to the neighborhood. Terisa had been with Explorations V Children's Museum since 1992, so wasn't really a newbie, just new to running her own business.
When making the decision to close The General Store in Fall 2013, Ellen invited Terisa and Sparky to come south (4 doors down) and join forces - to bring the locally created gift items to the custom picture framing business.
What year did Two Hens and a Hound start?
FastFrame was a franchise obligation that ended 2014, afterwhich name was officially changed to Two Hens and a Hound
Why custom framing?
Helping people to preserve their memories and special moments is a privilege. The diversity of each day keeps the business fun and interesting - no two projects are exactly the same, so, no two days are the same. It is a chance to use and challenge our creativity every day. Unlike many big box shops, we complete each project in-house, so, no treasure leaves the building with anyone other than its owner. We have framed a collection of old Roman coins, a newspaper from the Civil War, an antique golf club, a Carnegie medal, and a variety of family heirlooms. Weaving the memories around these items has been so rewarding.
Why sell locally made merchandise?
It serves multiple purposes. For the artist, it gives an outlet 6 days/week and someone to promote their creations while they remain free to create more. For Two Hens & a Hound, it allows for a variety of unique, quality merchandise for the customers without the risky investment that comes with the retail world. For the customers, it gives a great feeling of helping to support both artisans and local business as well as getting unique, special items. It is truly a community-based effort.
What has helped you the most in the success of your business?
Service. The desire to go above and beyond for our customers. We assure that each guest knows that their choice to come to Two Hens and a Hound is appreciated. We know that we are not the only place to get frames in town, but, we want to be the best choice!
What is the biggest obstacle of being a small business?
Competition with the big box shops and on-line shopping options. We can not compete with the prices they can offer because of the price they are able to pay (not) for labor and supplies. We have to fill that gap with one on one customer service. And, we do.
Why is the support of small businesses so important?
Small business owners are members of the community, not faceless corporate millionaires in other states/countries. Dollars spent in local businesses are investments in your community, they go back into the community through taxes, jobs, supplies etc. When people purchase from local big box shops, they do support some community efforts (jobs), but the majority of the dollars go to the corporate gurus. When folks purchase online, 100% goes to a faceless place, with nothing going back into the community.
Do you participate in American Express's Shop Small campaign?
Yes!
If so, how has it helped you?
It helps to bring a focus on the hometown businesses that don't have the outrageous marketing dollars that the big box shops afford. We use the opportunity to give back to those who visit us on that day.
What would you like to tell your customers and the community about you, your business, and/or small businesses in general?
Often our customers become our friends. We are invested in the projects we work on, and in the artists we represent. We also feel that giving back to our community is critical. We love Downtown Lakeland and know that what makes Downtown successful is good for our neighbors and our business.
Any final thoughts you would like to share?
We like to hear about new artists and new ideas. If you have an idea you'd like to see developed, and you think we can help in the slightest - it doesn't have to be art related - come by and chat.

Photo Folding Tray

I decided to be crafty today and made my mom and my mother-in-law these photo folding trays for Mother's Day.

Here's my how to:

What you'll need:

Folding tray (I found mine at Walmart for under $9)
Mod Podge ( I used gloss instead of matte)
sponge brushes
pictures

First lay out your pictures anyway you see fit. I didn't do much cutting to mine, but that doesn't mean you can't cut out any shapes you want. I also tucked photos behind each other to add interest. Be creative until you find an arrangement that you love.

Once you've found your placement, take a picture just in case you have to move any aside while you adhere the photos to the tray.

Carefully use a small sponge brush to apply the Mod Podge to the back of the photo. Make sure each photo is adhere to the wood, not just another picture that is partially tucked behind.

After all the photos are in place, take a large sponge brush and apply Mod Podge evenly over the photos.

You may need to apply a few coats.

It took me about a half hour for each tray, not including dry time. Give the Mod Podge a couple of days to set before using. I plan on spraying a clear coat once my tray is set. I'll update this blog post with the results.

Kodak 828 color slide film.

I collect old cameras. I love the way they look, how strong they were built, and the quality in which they were made. I got lucky yesterday at an antique store and found this Kodak PONY 828 camera. They were produced from 1949-1959. They used 828 film, not 35mm. There were old canisters (some still in sealed boxes) of unused film. When I got home, I opened the back of the camera and I found a roll of used film!!!

So I was on the hunt to find a company that salvaged old film. Granted the process by dates on the unused film ranged from July 1968- May 1969, sometimes you can still get images from old film if not stored in warm places.

However these are the responses I'm getting:

"Unfortunately, the roll that you have pictured here says process K-12 color slide film. that chemical process was discontinued some time ago.."

"The Kodachrome process is no longer available because it has been deemed unsafe for the environment. But Kodachrome can still be processed as black and white, and we do it.

So we have one saying it can no longer be done, and one saying it can only be done in black and white, not color."

These companies specialize in film development. I'm still contacting other companies. None of the companies I found are local to me, some are expensive, and of course due to the age of the film no one can guarantee any images from this roll.

There could be prom photos, wedding photos, a birthday party, or a family vacation on this roll of film, and unless the only company I have found so far can recover any images these images may be lost forever. Why? ...because no one got prints before the technology became obsolete.

"Oh, but digital will always be around." Ah, that may be true, we truly can not see this becoming obsolete. Even though we have seen floppy disks fade away, and computers are coming out that no longer having CD drives. "We have the cloud now." Are you making sure that your username and password to your cloud service is being passed down to your grandchildren? A cloud service that may or may not be around in 20 years? Or are they on an external hard drive that will fail. I have a hard drive that I got in 2013 and it is already beginning to fail. The dreaded "click click click" when it is plugged in has begun. However, I'm not overly concerned because I have the prints of my favorites and of important moments.

I am not against digital images. Not in the slightest, they have a place in our lives. An important place. What I do believe is that the images most dear to you should be printed, hung, put in an album or whatever tangible medium that they can be on. Something you do not need an electronic device to view. Digital files are amazing, they can be instantly shared with friends and family, they can be set as screen savers and desktop wall paper that will pop up when you turn on your computer. Just don't allow these images to slip away in technology advancement to be forgotten forever.

The misconception of Low Resolution photos.

When a client asks for their entire gallery in high resolution files, I sometimes wonder "Are they planning to print, frame, and hang 15-20 pictures??" In reality they will print their favorites and share the gallery online. Also, it's because of the misconception of what low resolution really is.

Low resolution images is not the same as poor quality images. We have this idea, that getting a low resolution file is like getting something of little to no value. This is simply not true!

Currently my desk top image is of a low resolution file on a 21.5 inch screen filling it top to bottom and side to side, and you know what? I don't see a single individual pixel. Oh, but how can that be? Why doesn't look like crap? Simple answer, low resolution isn't crap unless the image was a crap image to begin with.

Here's a screenshot of my desk top on the left is the image magnified to the point I start seeing pixels. Remember this is a 21.5inc screen not a 12in laptop or 10 in tablet.

Let me throw some numbers at you. The high resolution Jpeg of this image is: 5775 x 3855 pixels at 300 ppi resolution. The one on my desk top is 1386x725 at 72 ppi resolution.

Low resolution images are perfect for sharing on social media, websites, and email. This gives faster upload time, no resizing compression from social media, and no email warnings "The file exceeds the size...". These are the images you want to share online, not high resolution.

High resolution images are the ones your photographer prepares for print. Yes, every print should be prepared for the specific size it is to be printed. This will allow the image to look it's absolute best. They will come out OK with out this prep work, but who wants OK when you can get fantastic after investing in your photographer?

Low resolution are not for print and will typically get a "resolution to low" warning at your lab or even the drug store kiosk. Different printers require different resolution. anywhere from 180-360ppi. Low resolution looks great online, but will not look good on paper. This has to do with how printers and digital handle resolution. That is why on my screen the picture looks great, but if I were to print an 8x10 of the same file it would look blurry and pixelated. Both work differently in how resolution is handled.

Get what you love and adore in high quality prints from your photographer and if you are fortunate enough to receive low resolution images for sharing online, share to your heart's content, set as your desk top, and email them to family.

Mother's Day

Mother's Day is around the corner. I love Mother's Day. My kids are a little sweeter, and my husband likes to give me a little something special. Whether it's flowers, chocolates, a watch, whatever it is, it's just for me.

One of my favorite presents I get sometimes on holidays are frames. It give me an excuse to get my kids, sometimes with a little bribing, to fill it. Yes, yes, I know I'm partial to pictures. a little bias. Is there a mother out there that doesn't like having pictures of their children? Their families?

Sure, I know not all of us like to be in them, but I like to think that we, as mothers, want to see our impact in our family's lives. We can get some of that if we are in the photos. How your daughters wraps her arm around your waist or your son who is gradually getting taller than you has his hand on your shoulder. How the little ones are constantly look at you for guidance in front of the lady with the big camera.

Mother's Day is all about you. Embrace it, and enjoy it. Create your memories, capture pieces of it. If you're looking for a gift for a mother, pictures are never a wrong way to go, and they never go out of style.

Double M Aviation

I went out to visit Double M Aviation a couple of months ago for this project. It was windy, cold, and rainy. Audrey Baxcajay pulled up beside me with a smile on her face. She led me through a secured gate and in to the hanger.

Audrey helps keeps the place running smoothly. She has been around aviation most of her life and has a real love for it.

Audrey gave me the tour and introduced me to Mike Naab, the owner of Double M Aviation. He was busy working on a plane for a customer but took a moment out for me to take his picture and discuss my project.

I asked Audrey to fill me in on Double M Aviation.

Who owns Double M Aviation?
Mike Naab is the sole owner of Double M Aviation
How did you meet and how long have you known each other?
We started working together about seven years ago at an aircraft repair station
at the Bartow Airbase.
Why Aviation?
Mike has been in aviation since he was 19. He started out washing airplanes and
cleaning up the shop and eventually earned his Airframe & Powerplant license,
Inspector's Authorization, and his Private Pilot's License. He had always known
he wanted to have his own shop, and last year all the pieces of the puzzle came
together to make that a reality.
For myself, I never planned to work in aviation. I grew up flying in gliders
with my granddad, but never really considered it as a career choice. Then I
found myself in college with no idea what I wanted to do. Airplanes were cool
and something I knew a little bit about already, so I figured why not. Since
then I feel like I've really found my niche and I love what I do.
What services do you offer your clients?
Our slogan is "Aircraft Maintenance with No Excuses" and I think that really sums it up. People don't buy airplanes for them to sit in a hangar, they buy them to fly. Our goal is to keep the airplanes safe with as little down time as possible. We work on anything from small single engine aircraft, up to larger twin engine turboprops, and can do anything from oxygen service to removing and reinstalling an engine after overhaul.We have also had the privilege of partnering with Mac Avionics. They are located in the same hangar, which provides a unique benefit to our customers. Through this partnership we are able to offer avionics installations and repair in addition to aircraft maintenance without the hassle of moving the airplane from one location to another. Since we started last year it has been phenomenal seeing the different businesses working together to provide a complete maintenance solution to aircraft owners.

What would you like to tell your customers and the community about you, your
business, and/or small businesses in general?
As with a lot of things in life, you get what you pay for. Small businesses aren't always the cheapest game in town, but when you consider the value you get dollar for dollar, we're worth it. At Double M Aviation we value the relationships we are creating with the aircraft owners and the airplanes. Every time an airplane comes back through our hangar we learn a little bit more about it and the pilot flying it. Over time, we are able to establish a relationship of trust, that allows us to provide a higher level of customer service and safety. From my experience as an individual trying to shop locally, I've found that the attitude of "relationship first" is a common thread among small businesses. Small businesses might not always be able to compete with the prices of name-brand stores, but we can provide something they can't. We can provide quality service that's as unique as you are. We're confident that once you've seen the difference personalized service makes, you'll never want to sacrifice quality for cost again.

Sun n' Fun starts up next week! I have a special blog post coming up for the Small Business Saturday project.

Here's a hint. We have our own little airfield here in Lakeland, FL. With it comes hangers, and companies that service private aircraft.

These companies are a little different than your corporate service stations in Tampa and Orlando. I can't wait to introduce you to Double M Aviation. If you're out and about next week look up in the sky, or better yet, go visit the planes up close and watch the shows!!!

Black and Brew

When you walk in you are greeted by cozy atmosphere and comforting aromas.

Down town is the heart of my city just like many other cities. It's historic, peaceful, bustling, classic, and trendy all at the same time. From car shows, to festivals, to parades if there's an event free to the public it will most likely be hosted in down town Lakeland orbiting around Lake Mirror or Munn Park.

Munn Park is surrounded by buildings that were built as early as the 1920s. Nestled in there, right across the street is Black and Brew. Beyond the out door seating area are large black doors that swing out towards the street. Inside you will find what the name suggests. Coffees, lattes, and espressos. However, you will also find bistro type sandwiches both hot and cold. I highly suggest the Honey Ham and Swiss or the Grilled White Cheddar with the soup of the day. When you walk up to the counter you won't miss the display case full of goodies.

Side note: A plus for me, I am diabetic and often my choices for a low sugar flavored drink at a coffee shop tends to be slim short of regular coffee w/ some Sweet & Low packets. You have to add for the milk and whipped cream (if you add that), but the sugar free vanilla flavoring has 4g of total carbs (they let me look at the nutrition label). The milk and whipped cream will add a few more to that, but still very reasonable amount of sugar in a sweet drink. Just anFYI for my sugar intolerant friends.

The staff are friendly, hard working, and seem to genuinely enjoy being there.

I reached out to the owner, Chris McArthur, for my Small Business Saturday project. He jumped on board and I asked him to answer a few questions about him and his business.

1) Names of the owners of Black and Brew: Chris McArthur 2) If more than one: How did you meet and how long have you known each other? I opened Black & Brew with my brother and best friend Michael. Michael later sold me his ownership so that he could pursue music full-time. 3) What year did Black and Brew open? 2006 4) Why coffee and dinning? We didn't initially intend to open a restaurant, but we learned very quickly that being an entrepreneur meant being flexible. Adding a well thought out, yet simple menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and flatbreads has been one of the best decisions we've made along the way. Our desire was to be a true third place - a place where anyone could come at any time for any reason. A community hub of sorts. Part of creating that space involved having products that people can enjoy at all times of day. We felt we could better accomplish our mission with an offering of both food and coffee. 5) What non menu items do you sell and why have you chosen these items (for example your coffee bean selection)? Not sure what you mean by non menu items. We source our coffee beans from Lakeland's only local commercial roaster - Patriot Coffee Roasters. (Which I happen to own as well). So obviously we take a whole lot of pride in craft roasting some of the best coffees in the world in small batches. 6) What has helped you the most in the success of your business? Our customers, our team and really wonderful community organizations like DLP, LDDA, CRA, Lakeland Chamber, ylakeland, and Catapult. I'm not talented enough to have made Black & Brew a success all by myself. It's been a combination of these elements that has made our success story a reality. 7) What is the biggest obstacle of being a small business? In my case the biggest obstacle to our success was my own inexperience. I was eager, ambitious and energetic, but lacked the wisdom that comes from experience. I was fortunate to connect with some really great mentors during our start-up who made the difference my own personal growth and development. 8) Why is the support of small businesses so important? Supporting small businesses keeps a greater portion of dollars spent in the local economy. Going one step further and supporting local small business helps to preserve and cultivate the character and unique identity of a city. 9) Do you participate in American Express's Shop Small campaign? The first time I met Adriana it was a bitter cold morning in front of the Auto Owners Building at 2710 W Memorial Blvd. There was a line. A long line for such a cold morning. My husband and I hung back a little bit so I could meet with her and talk about my Small Business Saturday blog project. I watched as people came up in to line waiting their turn. Everyone knew what they wanted it was clear they were regulars. No one seemed to mind the cold.

Specialty Coffee Boutique is right.

Drica's Favorites serves espresso, lattes, tea, and sweet treats such as cookies. There's also cheesy chips, cheese breads, cakes and more. This little truck has a variety, It used to be that when I thought of eating off of a food truck that greasy burgers, hot dogs, and corn dogs would come to mind. Not here. The coffees and pastries are of coffee shop quality. I would expect these items from a brick and mortar store front.

Why coffee and treats?

Growing up in Brazil, I have witness the magic of coffee. how it connects people, breaks the ice, closes business deals, inspires artists. At home, whenever a guest would arrive, the first thing to ask is if they want some coffee and with that comes a bowl of homemade delicacies, my grandmother would make daily!!

As an adult, I was able to experience the coffee magic in a business setting, managing coffee shops in NYC.

So, Coffee has followed me and I have followed the coffee. I often say: "Trust the coffee" and it is true. A great cup of coffee does wonders... It awakens your senses, it inspires, it relaxes you, energizes, it starts friendships, partnerships, books, biz plans...

I LOVE sharing my grandmother's treats with my guests. It is rewarding to see how much they enjoy.

What's special about your coffee and treats?

We only offer specialty coffee. which is determined as the highest quality of beans grown at micro climates. Its quality continues throughout its journey: soil, altitude, growing, harvesting, processing, roasting and brewing.

The Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) qualifies specialty coffee as beans that score 80 points or above on a 100-point scale. Specialty coffees are grown in special and ideal climates, and are distinctive because of their full cup taste and little to no defects. The unique flavors and tastes are a result of the special characteristics and composition of the soils in which they are produced.

So, All this translate in a cup of coffee that offers consistency in flavor. Our fresh brewed coffee has a round, balanced body, phenomenal flavor, great aroma and pleasant aftertaste. There is no need to add anything to the coffee

Our espresso beverages are handcrafted. We dial/calibrate the grinder throughout the day, we control the time of the espresso and the temperature of the milk. Our milk is properly steamed at the right temperature.

All this translate in a beverage that is creamy, warm and with great coffee flavor.

Most of our treats are literally from my grandmother's book. you cannot "google" some of these recipes:-) like the cheese chips, guava cookies, yucca cakes or even the cheese bread. There are other recipes out there but non like ours:) I grew up enjoying them and they pair perfectly with coffee.

I also grew up sharing them with our guests, family and friends so for me to serve them to our community, it is all very natural. I have done for over 30 years.

What has helped you the most in the success of your business?

I have trusted the coffee and my grandmother's taste in treats:-) with that, the support I have received from our community and my family it is IMPOSSIBLE TO describe.

I often find myself giggling when a new guest arrives at the truck and the other guest is waiting for a drink. We do not even need a menu. Our Ambassadors, do an INCREDIBLE job describing EACH SINGLE item to the new guest. the treats, the coffee, the fact we make our caramel sauce from scratch, that we make fresh whipping cream.

I do not have sign on our pastry display and I don't even think I need anymore. IT is absolutely THE BEST PART OF THE DAY to witness our LOYAL AMBASSADOR describe our products.

What is the biggest obstacle of being a small business?

There are soooo many!!!!!! While you are starting-up you think you have it under control and you will have the ability to have the human resources to assist in all aspects. once things start happening, you wear most of the hats, most of the days so to keep systems in place, to stay focused on your plan and vision and also keep your eyes on both short and long term goals.

Why is the support of small businesses so important?

Small businesses are the heart beat of every community. EVERY DAY our guests, a lot of them small biz owners come for coffee and we often share our experiences keep the circle of life. A lot of my stops are at local small businesses and it fascinates me how they succeed, how their structure, commitment to excellence and to their customers, desire to excel and their humbleness all keeps the wheels greased as a community.

It is absolutely the circle of life, a sisterhood, a boomerang of loyalty, self-driven personalities, determination and resilience.

Ever since I started my business I wanted to be an open book. I didn't want my blog to be just about sessions. I wanted to use my art to educate clients and potential clients about photography, prints, and heirloom pieces. I wanted to use it as encouragement for others to follow their dreams. Last year I went and shot with another photographer. We were using ourselves as subjects so that we could have our own portraits for a change. I went out again this year with another friend of mine, Stephanie Dawson of Stephanie Dawson Photography.

We traded memory cards and edited the other photographer's shot, just like I did with my friend Valerie. Looking at my own portraits and editing them is a little strange. It also allows me to see myself how others see me.

So this is me, huh? I look a little different than I do when I look in the mirror. Everything is reversed than I'm used to seeing, and I'm seeing myself other than my own eye level.

Well, I can say that I'm not ecstatic with my appearance. It has nothing to do with the photography. The photographer had good composition, exposure, and focus. She was creative in her shots and did a great job. It's about my own self image. I'm overweight. That's the flaw I see front and center.

Who always takes the pictures in your home? Is it you? If so, ask yourself why. If you are uncomfortable with how you look on camera, know that you are not alone. Take small steps and get in front of the lens, and then let the images be seen. It is just as important to be apart of the memory as it is to capture it.

A few weeks ago I had a model shoot. I got the models, assistants, and had two photographers with me. We were going to use a speed light, reflector, and we were going to work w/ small children.

Well, it started raining as soon as the first model arrived. Oh! I was so disappointed, but we were all there. Instead of packing up and rescheduling, we decided to go with it. The assistants I hired held the reflector as cover for the photographers, we were all getting wet, and we had fun.

We just let loose, and played anyways. We didn't get all the shots we wanted, but that's OK. We didn't let a sprinkle ruin our afternoon. Sometimes you just have to roll with it. Nothing will always go as planned. It's life, it's unpredictable.

Roll with the punches when you can, look for opportunity. You may still be let down, but you may be surprised as well.

This year I am putting a spot light on small businesses in my home town. I will be doing this project leading up to Small Business Saturday this November. Shopping local puts more money back in to your community. This allows the local economy to flourish and grow by creating jobs, providing services, and getting quality products. I have found that many times when I shop small I meet the owners, the face and heart of the company. Their employees aren't just numbers on the payroll which seems to produce better customer service by people who care about what they do.

I asked Ty if he would answer a few questions about himself, his business, and the importance of shopping local. Enjoy. Shop Small.

Interview questions:

Where are you from?

I grew up in the D.C./Baltimore area and spent my childhood summers on my granny’s farm in rural Alabama. I like to think I got the best of both worlds, city boy during the school year, country boy in the summer.

What did you do before owning a business?

Prior to this business I worked in Neuroscience with epilepsy and seizure patients. Before that, I served in the U.S. Air Force for about 10 years. And before the military, I was mostly in the restaurant industry. I’ve also have a ton of part-time jobs in a multitude of fields.

What year did ICONIC start?

We’ve been in business since 2013. Originally we were a pseudo-franchise, but once I realized that company was more profit-motivated, didn’t care about quality or client-service, I decided to venture out on my own. Initially the break-away and going independent was tough, but our clients and staff are so much happier.

Why vape industry?

I was a smoker for about 25 years. I had tried everything to quit cigarettes. Nothing worked for long. One Christmas my brother gave me a quality electronic cigarette starter kit. That kit helped get me off the cancer sticks. The problem was at that time the only place to get decent e-cigs/supplies was on the internet. I wanted to open a store where people could sample flavors, get educated on e-cigs/vaping, purchase quality products and most importantly get support in quitting smoking. All my staff are ex-smokers. They know what it’s like to try and quit.

You are part owner of a shop in Colorado, why Lakeland?

In a nutshell, family. My parents moved here a while ago, so I’ve visited Lakeland many times over the years. They’re getting older and I wanted to be closer to them. Plus I had lived in Colorado for about 12 years and was getting tired of cold winters. I see so much positive potential growth for Lakeland and I'm excited to see what the future holds for Lakeland.

What has helped you the most in the success of your business?

My staff. They’re awesome. Our clients also love to refer us to their friends and family. Without our clients and staff, we wouldn't exist.

What is the biggest obstacle of being a small business?

Being a local micro-business is tough. We’re competing against internet companies who don’t have much overhead, competing against big companies with much larger budgets and also competing against other small businesses in the same industry. We work with a very small limited budget. The government defines a small business as any business with less than 500 employees. I think that definition either needs to change or another category needs to be created for micro-small businesses such as ourselves.

Why is the support of small businesses so important?

Money spent at a local small business goes right back into the local economy. We support local charities, organizations, events and other small businesses. Supporting local small businesses helps the community.

Do you participate in American Express's Shop Small campaign?

We have participated.

If so, how has it helped you?

I would love to say that it has but the Lakeland community as a whole, doesn't seem to know much about it. Participation didn't hurt but it didn't seem to help either. I hope in the future, the program helps bring more awareness to the need to support small businesses.

What would you like to tell your customers and the community about you, your business, and/or small businesses in general?

Please support your local small businesses, especially the micro-small businesses. I can't speak for other micro-companies, but I know ours really does care about our clients. We strive to give our clients the best possible service and experience.

Anything else you would like to share about your business and your products?

If you are a smoker and/or have family, friends, co-workers who are, please bring them in to see us. We have helped several thousand people quit smoking. Our success rate is over 90%. Most smoking cessation programs barely have a 50% success rate. We're here to help, educate and support. There's so much disinformation and misinformation out there, stop in and learn what vaping/ecigs is really all about.

2015 was a great year

As this year comes to an end, I am reflecting on this year's work. I've had the privilege to meet and work with so many new people this year.

I've grown as a person, a mom of a teenager and preteen, and as a photographer. This year went by so fast. I have noticed more growth this year than last. I am happy to report that I have been able to keep up.

My hopes for 2016 is to continue to grow my business and grow in my craft all the while keeping balance in my personal life. These are not so much resolutions to keep as they are necessities in order to move forward. I've come too far to become stagnant. I believe this will be my last blog of the year. Big things are coming next year. I have a special 11 month project I will be working on. I hope you follow along and enjoy.

My sister-in-law, Ashley. She is the new family gypsy since my other sister-in-law, Sunday has settled down. Ashley just got back recently from her trip to Europe. I loved seeing her Snap Chats and Facebook posts while she was away. Before she went on her trip she worked at a hostel in New York City. She dreamed of the city for almost as long as I have known her. She is back home now, and planting her feet, at least for a little while.

My travels were caused by being married to a soldier. It was an experience. I miss seeing new places, but I am very happy to be firmly planted back in my home town again, too.

It's healthy to have dreams and endeavors. I hope to see her to continue to fly, to be strong and brave.

There's a bundle of joy coming real soon.

I got to do a session for this expecting mother. She is simply gorgeous, isn't she. I was never that pretty when I was pregnant with my children. She's expecting boy number two. How exciting!

Her son, Eli, is three. I think he's going to be a great big brother. This little guy waiting to come in to the world is named after his father, Rico.

Parenthood is a job not to take lightly. It takes strong people to raise other human beings. I wish this family the best. I can't wait to see them again, complete once this little guy makes his grand entrance.

Spilt Milk

Don't cry over spilt milk.

I've had a frustrating weekend. Weekends like these make me question whether I've gotten in over my head. Am I good enough? Am I ready? Do I love this enough?

It can't all be a bowl of cherries. I know this. In my head I know this through and through. Does it hurt any less? Nope.

This is not the first time I've felt kicked in the gut.

I only have two options. Give it all up, or push through it. It would be so easy to just drop it all. Shoot when I want to shoot, what I want to shoot, and how I want to shoot. Simple, no stress. Waive the white flag of surrender.

Ugh! I can't do it. I can't. I started out knowing I would have bad days. Knowing it wasn't all flowers and sunshine. Knowing I had to claw my way up. I can imagine all the "What if?" "Why did I stop?" "Would I be successful if I hadn't given up?" I did that already, for most of my life!

So there I have it, there is no option, no decision to make. I can't give it up. I won't give it.

Don't give up your hopes, your dreams, your desires because of a bad day, week, or month. Remember why you do what you do. Whether it's photography, painting, cooking, caring for another. Whatever it is, don't live with the "What ifs". Choose to live with the "I tried." "I did it." " I didn't give up."

Childhood is almost over.

Halloween, to most, is about dressing up, seeing friends, and eating sweets until we can eat no more. Halloween is a time of year that I really see my children grow up. What they choose for a costume, and when they stop showing an interest in trick or treating or dressing up all together.

My daughter did not trick or treat this year, and this year may have been the last for my son. My daughter went to her boyfriend's house to watch movies with his family. I'm seeing her grow up and mature, it makes me proud and sad at the same time.

Before I know it, she will be graduating high school and off in to the world. I remember being fifteen. I remember thinking I knew more than people thought only to know so little about life.

My boy's childhood is fading as he begins the firsts steps towards adolescents. My little man isn't going to be little for too much longer. Neither of my children were ever needy or clung to me a stranger came by. They were overly friendly. They had little fear of people and places.

They are a little more aware of the world than they were, but still so trusting. I try to teach them that not everyone has good intentions, but at the same time teach them that not everyone is out to "get" them.

It's a difficult line even as adults. We teach our children the best we can and hope they make it out in to the world unscathed.

As parents we need to pull them close, say our little prayers over them, and make sure their wings grow strong sending them off to flight.

I hope as they continue to grow that I don't forget that I was once that age, with my own opinions about the world. I hope to use my experiences and knowledge to guide them. I also need to know when to let them make their own decisions and go out in the world strong and aware.

Isn't my senior rep gorgeous? I love shooting seniors. They are excited about the future, maybe a little nervous as well as they are planning out their next big step in life.

Many don't know what they are going to do while others have it all laid out in their heads. They are the future. Corny, but so true. I'm a loans processor during the day, and I have to look at employment information for every loan. It's interesting when I get loans for people around my age. I get to see where life took them in the same amount of time that I have had already.

Some are very successful business owners, while others work for a corporation. Some are stay at home mothers and others are in unique fields. Back in high school it was hard to imagine ourselves 10; 15; or even 20 years into the future. We had our hopes and our dreams. Some of us had our expectations on where we would be living, how many kids if any, and the lifestyle we would be living. For some of us it was a big question mark. We spent the first part of our lives under the care and guidance of our parents. What we imagined life would be like in college or off on our own in general usually turned out pretty different.

I was a question mark kinda girl. Until I got married a few months out of high school. My awe and wonder of adult life didn't last very long did it? Well, I'm still married to this man. People didn't have a lot of expectations for him when he was in high school. He was a party guy, who just wanted to have fun. Then he joined the Army and for a time, his path was laid out. I moved to Germany with him, then Texas, and New York. When he left the Army we came back home to Florida.

I never thought I would have traveled like I did. It's funny where life and people take you. The only thing I would change in my life is picking up the camera sooner, but I'm here now. I still have a day job, but I get to do something I'm passionate about as well. For that, I am grateful.

Where has life taken you? Did you have an idea of where'd you be? Are you happy? Happiness is very important. Don't just go day to day in a routine. Take time out, be who you wanted to be, even if it's just for a day here and there. If you wanted to paint, paint! Make your art. If you wanted to just be a mom or a dad, are you taking time out of your work life to enjoy that?

As the saying goes "Live well, laugh often, love much." Don't forget about what you wanted in life, it's not too late.

She's gorgeous. Meet Fernanda. She's a young married woman who works in my department. She is also a college student working on her Masters' degree. She's a very busy girl between a full time job, college, and having a husband to pay attention to. She has motivation, drive, and seems put together.

Sure, I don't know her struggles, or the times she wants to throw in the towel, but I see her strength and perseverance.

She's also sweet and kind. She has a good sense of humor and a weak spot for memes. When I spend time with people during sessions, I really get to take a sneak peek in to their personalities. What they like, what they don't like. How serious they are, or not. Their insecurities, and where they feel confident.

I like this little window I get into people's lives. It makes my job interesting and it gives me inspiration.

I've been looking back on the recent years. There were some downs and some ups. Many, many ups. The creative side of me was awaken. Then came motivation and drive. I started living a dream that I had when I was a child. I have not become bored or so discouraged to quit.

I have been discouraged, frustrated, broken hearted, and angry with photography. I have also had encouragement, triumphs, joy, and awe. Actually, I have had more of the ups than I have the downs.

When I look back at the downs, I feel I need to use them, and embrace them for what they are. Lessons, opportunity, a step in the right direction. How can I learn if I don't make mistakes? What kind of person would I be if I thought everything I did was gold? What kind of photographer would I be? Mother? Wife?

I'd be a person, a photographer, a mother, and a wife who doesn't grow. One who stays stagnant and unmoving. Who wants that? I don't. Me. I don't want to become like a stagnant body of water never letting the wind move me around. I want to be a river that flows to something greater. The gentle glide down stream, the roaring rapids, the rushing of a fall, right down to something bigger and full of life, full of excitement and wonder. To be what is known and to have a deeper unknown just waiting to be discovered.

I want to be like a river.
