Arsenal conflict: Is Wenger too arrogant for not spending?

Hello and very good Sunday everyone. As we know, Arsene Wenger bristled when he was informed of Gary Neville’s stinging criticism of Arsenal’s “naive or arrogant” transfer policy in the 11 years since they last won the Premier League title.

But the Gunners manager would be better off taking Neville’s criticism on board and examining it in more detail - because the former Manchester United defender is spot on with his assessment.

Arsenal still have 35 matches to correct their shaky start to the season, but in their first three games Wenger's side have looked miles away from winning the title.

Neville’s argument is that Wenger falsely clings on to a belief that Arsenal can return to the top with only technical players and that they have never replaced the physical dominance of the likes of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto.

Few Arsenal fans could disagree having watched so many lightweight performances since the 'Invincibles' tore opponents apart on a weekly basis in 2003-04.

In the interim, Wenger has tried to copy the model of Spain and Barcelona by relying on flair players.

When it clicks, it looks brilliant, yet they cannot grind out results in the same way as their more physical title rivals like Chelsea and Manchester City.

Wenger strives for a utopia in which the Londoners can simply outplay their opponents every week. It is never going to happen and it’s not how you win the league. Santi Cazorla can buzz around all he likes, but he needs an imposing figure next to him when the going gets tough.

Ignoring the opposition might have worked for the 'Invincibles' but not only did they have the physical prowess that Neville cites, they were so good that they could play how they wanted.

It is naive to think that the current Arsenal team will always pass their opponents off the pitch.

It is arrogant to believe that Arsenal can win the league this season by signing only a goalkeeper after they finished 12 points behind the champions last term.

You could sense that attitude had crept through to the squad over the summer, too. After the players spoke about something “special” happening throughout pre-season, they were caught cold by West Ham on the opening day.

Wenger admits his side have made a “very average” start to the season with four points from their first three matches already leaving them six points behind City. It shouldn't be too much of a surprise when you consider that Arsenal have the same outfielders as last season while City have improved their already superior squad.

Arsenal's title challenge was blown apart long before Christmas last year after a poor start to the campaign and supporters will dread history repeating itself. It has happened too many times in recent seasons.

So how does Wenger plan to turn it around in the remaining week of the transfer window?

Wenger insists that he is only in the market for “exceptional” players to improve his squad and that is understandable in many respects.

The lack of top class strikers in world football means the club have focused on Karim Benzema as their main forward target this summer, with few alternatives that can provide a guaranteed upgrade on Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck.

But Wenger also turned his nose up at the £25 million pricetag for Morgan Schneiderlin earlier in the summer when the French midfielder could add the physicality and experience that Neville talks about. There are others out there who can do a similar job such as Grzegorz Krychowiak at Sevilla, who has been strongly linked with a move to north London.

"I can't think of a word to describe that bunch - I could but it wouldn’t be usable on television," Neville said about the Arsenal squad.

"They're certainly not what I would call what you want to win you a league, the powerful characters, the strength you need running through your team.

"I just cannot get my head around why he would not sign players of power to assist these talented players you’ve got to enable them to win the league.

"It is the one big, if you like, black mark against Arsene Wenger in these last 10 years... to me it's arrogance - to think that you are not going to adapt your team to impact on the other teams you’re playing against. It is either naivety or arrogance because they keep losing this way."

Wenger has an enormous transfer budget - up to £80m - and he should be more ruthless, too. While Per Mertesacker is a good player and a great leader, there are plenty of central defenders out there that would improve Arsenal’s starting XI.

Petr Cech is an exceptional signing and showed why with two magnificent saves in the goalless draw with Liverpool on Monday night.

It is naive and arrogant, though, to think that Cech’s arrival alone will be enough for Arsenal to win their first title since 2004.

Hello everyone, I been an Arsenal fan for such a long times and I always dreamed of managing them one day even day people looks it as a silly yet funny. So, this is my favourite Arsenal XI squad in entirely Arsenal squad in football history. It consists of 11 players starts on the pitch and seven players on the bench. Let's take a look on it:

GK- David Seaman

The goalkeeper for me is David Seaman. The peak of his career was during his period as Arsenal and England goalkeeper in the 1990s and early 2000s; during his time at Arsenal he won many medals including three league championships (1991, 1998, 2002), four FA Cups (1993, 1998, 2002, 2003), the League Cup in 1993 and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1994.

CB - Sol Campbell

In 2001 he joined Tottenham's North London rivals Arsenal on a free transfer, and as a result remained a hated figure amongst many Spurs supporters for the rest of his career. In his five years and 195 appearances at Arsenal he won two Premier League winners medals and two FA Cup winners medals, encompassing the 2001–02 league and FA Cup double, and being part of the team that became known as The Invincibles for their undefeated 2003–04 Premier League campaign.

Hey guys, today I want to talk about the incridbles of The Invincbles. Played 49, Won 36, Drawn 13, Lost None. The Arsenal squad which set a new unbeaten league record between May 2003 and October 2004 will live long in the memory and forever in the history books.

The Gunners' historic run actually began amid the ruins of a failed Premiership bid. Arsenal shook off the disappointment of a home defeat against Leeds which handed Manchester United the title to thrash Southampton 6-1 at Highbury on May 7, 2003. No one had an inkling about what would for. They had bags of character too. After being dumped out of the FA Cup and Champions League in the space of a few days, Arsenal bounced back from a 2-1 half-time deficit against Liverpool at Highbury in April 2004 to win 4-2 and stay on course for the title.Arsène Wenger had built a team to compare with any side in Europe. With Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure at the back, Patrick Vieira and Pires in midfield and Henry partnering Dennis Bergkamp up front, Arsenal had too much steel and too much style for their Premiership rivals.

Later that month Arsenal clinched the Premiership with a 2-2 draw at Tottenham. Success rarely tasted sweeter but there was still history to be made: Arsenal duly avoided defeat against Birmingham, Portsmouth, Fulham and Leicester to complete the first unbeaten league campaign since Preston's in the 19th century.

Nottingham Forest's record of 42 games unbeaten had stood for 26 years. Arsenal matched it on August 22, 2004 but so nearly blew their chance, digging deep to turn a 3-1 deficit into a resounding 5-3 victory.

Three days later Henry, Cesc Fabregas and Jose Antonio Reyes were on target as Arsenal wrote themselves into the history books by beating Blackburn at Highbury. Wenger's team extended their record to 49 games, scoring freely and playing some of the finest football the English game has seen.

5 - Jack Wilshere

Of the current crop of young guns to come through the academy, Wilshere is without doubt the player with the potential to go the furthest. Born in Stevenage, the left-footed midfielder joined Arsenal when he was nine years old and became the Gunners youngest league debutant when he featured in the clash with Blackburn Rovers in September 2009. One of the highlights in his career, he established himself as a one of the promising Arsenal player when he dominant a midfield area against Barcelona that ended with victory 2-1. Today I want to talk about the one of the legendary of Arsenal, Theirry Henry, Joining from Juventus at 1999 worth 19.7M pounds, Theiry Henry becoming top scorer in Arsenal football history with bagging up into 228 goals in 377 games. French-born striker, who started in Monaco in a youth time joining Juventus at 1996. He won several awards at Monaco such as FFA Young Player Of The Year before departure to the Italian Giant. By 2007, after a heartbreaking defeat in the Champions League final against Barcelona, Henry seemed to have grown unsettled in England. Unexpectedly, he was then sold to Barcelona. Once again playing on the wing, he has not been as effective in Spain.

10- Junichi Inamoto

Arrived from Japan with a huge reputation, and expectation to match, but made virtually no impact during a year at Arsenal and was quickly moved on to Fulham.

11. Beating Barcelona

16th February 2011

Having been outclassed by the same side one year previously in the quarter final stage, in the build up to this Champions League last 16 knockout tie, Cesc Fabregas-then Arsenal captain, called Barcelona the “greatest side in the history of football.” On a magical night at the Emirates, Arsenal fought back from a David Villa goal, and a first half deficit, to win 2-1, with wonder goals from Robin Van Persie and the mercurial Andrey Arshavin. Although the tie ultimately ended after a disappointing 3-1 defeat in Barcelona, this win remains one of Wenger’s greatest, proving his tactical acumen, as his substitutions changed the game, Arshavin coming on to score the winner, as well as the success of his footballing philosophy.

Often overlooked as an impressive achievement by pundits and fans, Wenger’s FA Cup win in 2005 was his 7th trophy in 9 seasons, a remarkable success rate, given the success of Manchester United in that time. A seemingly strange choice here, but let me explain. Rewind to 28th August 2011, and at Old Trafford, Arsenal suffered their heaviest defeat since 1896, being thrased 8-2 by a rampant Manchester United, leaving them 17th, with many pundits writing off a Champions League place. In response, Wenger brought out his dusty chequebook, signing 5 players on Transfer Deadline Day. At first, they seemed to have no effect, the Gunners losing 4-3 to Blackburn, compounding their worst start to a league season in over 50 years. However, over the course of the season, massively disadvantaged by the loss of Fabregas, Nasri and Clichy in the pre-season, Wenger dragged Arsenal up to third, thanks mainly to Robin Van Persie, who promptly buggered off to Manchester United the next season. A final day win at West Brom proved crucial, as following Chelsea’s Champions League triumph, Tottenham, who came 4th, having thrown away a 12 point lead over Arsenal and a 2 goal lead at the Emirates, were relegated to the Europa League.

7. Financial Security

Armed with his Economics degree from Strasbourg University, Wenger has also sought to run Arsenal in a self-sufficient way, free of the influence of the Oligarchs that dominate Chelsea and Manchester City. Wenger’s skill at balancing the books has led to Arsenal’s increasingly strong financial state, placing them well for FFP, leading the building of a new stadium, as well as finally giving them the funds to sign players of the calibre of Ozil. Incredibly, Wenger has only made a yearly loss ONCE as Arsenal manager, a staggering achievement considering the success he has brought us.

6. Consistency

Since joining Arsenal, Wenger has never failed to finish outside the Top 4, ensuring permanent Champions League football. Since the Champions League was reformatted in 2003/04, only Arsenal and Real Madrid have got through the group stages in every season, highlighting the remarkable consistency Wenger has blessed us with. After near misses in the UEFA Cup in 2000, and the FA Cup in 2001, Arsenal were ruled out in many quarters before the season had even started. A stunning 13 game winning run secured the league, made all the more satisfying by Wiltord’s winner at Old Trafford sealing the double, the first part having been achieved by beating Chelsea in Cardiff the previous weekend, thanks to wonder goals from Parlour and Ljungberg. Arsenal also completed the incredible achievement of staying undefeated away from home during the whole season, a feat that was to be repeated 2 years later.

4. Champions League Run

17th May 2006

Stuttering on the domestic front, few gave Arsenal any chance when they were drawn against Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League. However, a wonder goal from Thierry Henry, coupled with a defence midway through the longest ever run in the Champions League without conceding a goal saw Arsenal progress to face Juventus, who were sent packing 2-0 on aggregate. Villarreal were also seen off, Wenger’s 4-5-1 paying dividends in Europe, once again proving his tactical brilliance. Unfortunately, Arsenal’s run was cruelly ended in Paris by Barcelona, but nothing should be taken away from this achievement, considering the relative inexperience of many members of the side, and the sides that were beaten en route to the final.

3. First Double

In his first full season as Arsenal manager, Wenger well and truly announced himself to the footballing world, overturning a 12 point deficit on Manchester United after some bookies had even suspended betting on the title. Marc Overmars’ goal at Old Trafford was the turning point, and thanks to PFA Player of the Season Dennis Bergkamp, and Captain Fantastic Tony Adams, rejuvenated by Wenger and his revolutionary training methods, Arsenal sealed the title with a 4-0 win at home to Everton, quickly followed by a Cup win against Newcastle.

2. Invincibles/49ers

An achievement that may never be matched in the history of English football. Playing the greatest football these shores have ever seen, Wenger’s team swatted all domestic opposition aside with contempt, going an incredible 49 games unbeaten, from 7th May 2003 to 24th October 2004, winning the league at White Hart Lane with 4 games to spare. Success on the Cup fronts was not forthcoming however, with defeats to Chelsea and United denying Arsenal what was their best ever chance for a treble.

Arsenal is a strange club. Like most clubs all over the world, it has a clear understanding and appreciation for its history. But unlike most clubs, it has a strong sense of what it is now, both on and off the pitch, and a clear vision of where it wants to go in the future.

It has a philosophy.

There will be fans that want us to spend to keep up with the big boys but for various reasons, most of them obvious to the rational fan, this is simply not possible. If anything, our refusal to do just that combined with Arsene Wenger’s stubborn desire to mould teams based on a consistent philosophy of possession-based, attacking football intensifies the desire to remain true to this philosophy.

The issue is that as a supporter — and more pertinently, as a supporter who has only seen Arsenal football under Wenger, a group that I believe makes up a large part of the club’s international fan base — this philosophy has changed. Whether it has been obvious to you or not, Wenger’s approach to Arsenal has altered. The desire to play possession-based, attacking football is still there but his youth experiment has failed.

The change in philosophy

You only need to look at the club’s most recent exits (and I don’t need to rattle them off to you). The players he has trusted to fight against the system, players he counted on to buck the ugly trend of disloyalty in the modern game, have deserted him. Whether you agree or sympathise with their reasons for doing so the fact is that Wenger, the idealistic bastard he is, had hoped they would stick around and in the process stick two fingers up at the rest of the football world by winning the biggest prizes on offer.

They got close but they missed out, gave up and bailed. End of.

What is important is that Wenger has accepted it. He is not some mad fool who is still fighting the same fight. This summer’s signings show that clearly. Last summer’s signings showed it too. Robin van Persie’s exit has burned him badly and his reaction to Alex Song’s ridiculous itching over a new contract — cutting him away with little more than a moment’s thought — displayed a newfound pair of concrete balls. If Theo Walcott and his agent thinks he’s going to get a new deal worth more than 75K, they’re in for a nasty surprise.

His idealistic approach to loyalty is gone and it is likely that the club is all the better for it.

Last season while writing about Arsenal I could feel the shift in the manager’s approach and the impact on his philosophy. It was unsettling in the sense that everything I had previous written about was penned with the perspective of reaching a peak from Wenger’s previous, youth-based philosophy. Yet it became clearer to me that this was no longer the direction he was taking with this team and rather than drawing conclusions, I felt a natural pull away from sharing my scrambled thoughts. In short, I didn’t know what the hell I wanted to say and silence was golden.

Arsenal on a global level

This is a vital time for the club because its philosophy is being questioned on a global level. The ability of this club to ride out what I would label The Infinite Years of football in England — where the virtually infinite money of clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea have created a marketplace with no rules, boundaries or logic — depends on it retaining its idealistic philosphy in places like Asia, Africa, Australia and the US.

The supporters in these regions — and of course, I am one of them — have grown up in the time where football has gone truly global. To my recollection, 20 years ago it was not possible to get English football shown in Australia, for example. Between now and then I have seen the coverage of the Premier League grow from one match a weekend on free-to-air to blanket coverage of every single game on Foxtel. During the formative years of this process — during the mid-to-late 90s — the games were limited in nature, weighted heavily towards the two most successful teams at the time; Arsenal and Manchester United.

As teenagers and young kids these were the teams we could relate to the most, giving us enough narrative to build up villains and heroes and a story worth tuning in to. Sure, we might catch a Spurs or Aston Villa game here or there and sympathise with them or see a wonder-goal in a Sheffield Wednesday match, but there wasn’t the same continuity that came with following these teams. It became easier to love Arsenal and Manchester United because they were more familiar, offering character development like any good TV show.

While Manchester United — like Liverpool before them in the 80s — grew their fanbase primarily through success, Arsenal’s reputation and standing on the global level was tied in with their philosophy. Success was important, of course, but the crucial element was Arsene Wenger and his idealistic approach to the game. If you don’t agree simply ask a Malaysian or Nigerian supporter and you’ll see what I mean.

A sense of detachment

The truth is that this club under Arsene Wenger is at a crossroads. The shift at the club in the first-team level has happened and it is a challenge as a supporter to accept it. Even if it is ultimately for the better the reality is that the current landscape of football, as I’ve already mentioned, puts us and in particular, Wenger, in an impossible position. We are highly unlikely to win anything this season, next season or even in the foreseeable future yet most of us still hold hopes that it will happen.

On a personal level I feel like the last three seasons have slapped the naivety right out of me. I bought a shirt with Adebayor on the back, expecting him to repay the manager’s faith in plucking him from relative obscurity by becoming a vital part of Wenger’s successful project. He left and I felt gutted. Thierry bailed. Kolo Toure left. I felt stunned by Hleb leaving, by Flamini refusing to sign a contract and Fabregas going home.

Some of them hurt more than others but when Nasri left last season, something changed. It became clear to me that loyalty really wasn’t prevalent in the modern game and as such, attachment to certain individuals became dangerous. It made me feel stupid.

So I detached. But when you feel detached from the players who make up a team how can you truly support a team? Football is a passionate game for everybody involved but the moment you cannot truly get behind the players as a fan it becomes deflating. To take that further; how can you write about people that you no longer really respect or care about, even if it is in a tactical or technical sense? This blog is about the love of Arsenal but when you’re not feeling the love, what’s the point of it all?

When Robin van Persie released his statement earlier in the summer intending to leave the club I realised that things had changed for me. My detachment had changed my feelings. I simply did not care. I thought: if you want to leave this club and go play somewhere else, then so be it. When Song started itching for Barcelona I thought the same thing. Fine. Go. Now Theo Walcott wants to leave? I really don’t care. There was little anger, more a quiet acceptance that yes, the football world is not perfect but no, I wasn’t going to let it take away from my simple enjoyment of the game.

A team for life

It seems to me that Wenger has thought long and hard about his philosophy and in his own small way, which just so happens to be about as universal as you can imagine, he wants to show us that the world can be yours if you navigative life with intelligence, creativity and a desire to be innovative. Other teams have done it in the past — think Ajax in the 70s, Milan in the 90s and the Hungarians in the 50s — but Arsenal were the team I saw who offered this truly innovative approach, in a time while my love of the game blossomed from confused interest to full-blown passion.

As long as this philosophy remains I will care about Arsenal and as long as I care about Arsenal I will continue writing this blog. Whether that alienates me from some local fans I don’t know but I cannot fake a story that is not mine; about being born near Highbury or having a great-grandfather who handed me down a vintage Arsenal scarf.

The truth is I’m in far too deep now to stop supporting Arsenal. They will be my team for life. I am not foolish enough to believe they will keep telling the story over the rest of my lifetime the way I want it to be told, with the Wenger philosophy at the forefront of all of our successes. But that will not keep me from hoping.

He is currenty manager of Arsenal and has been there since 1996. He has earlier managed 3 other clubs including AS Monaco. He is fluent in French, German and English and also speaks a bit of Japanese, Italian and Spanish.

In 1996, Wenger was named manager of Arsenal and two years later the club completed a league and FA Cup double. Wenger is famous for its ambition to build a team that is not only able to win the game, but also can serve interesting spectacle. Teamwork is always a motto that he had never passed when training. The Times dubbed Wenger's side in season 2003/04 as the team that demonstrates the beautiful art of attack. The club won second league and cup double in 2002 and retained the FA Cup a year later. In 2004 Wenger managed Arsenal to a league season undefeated, a feat last accomplished by Preston North End, 115 years previously. Happy greetings! First of all before I show you about Arsenal's football club entry, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Abdul Wafi Shaik bin Abdul Rahman and I fanatically an Arsenal fan. What is Arsenal? Arsenal Football Club is a professional football club based in Holloway, London. The club currently play in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. One of the most successful clubs in English football, they have won 13 First Division and Premier League titles and a record 12 FA Cups.

Founded in 1886, Arsenal became the first club from the south of England to join the Football League in 1893. They won five League Championships and two FA Cups in the 1930s and became the second club to win the League and FA Cup Double in the 20th century in the 1971. In the 1990s and 2000s, Arsenal won a Cup Double, two further League and FA Cup Doubles, went through the 2003–04 season undefeated and became the first London club to reach the UEFA Champions League Final.
