One of the things that separates WordPress from other blogging software out there is the fact that it is open source, and the benefits that go along with being open source. If you aren’t very good at coding, or good with PHP in particular, then the WordPress community has come to the rescue with WordPress plugins, which will allow just about anyone to easily add additional functionality to their blog. With the free WordPress plugins that various authors write and contribute from around the globe, WordPress has gained a lot of flexibility, causing it to be more attractive to potential bloggers.

As this site is dedicated to WordPress, I thought it would be a good idea to have a featured post dedicated to the best WordPress plugins available. This post is a constant work in progress, and will continue to be updated as I feature more plugins on this website. Showing up on search engines is one of the most critical ways to increase website traffic and expose your content, product or service to people who might be interested in what you have to offer. Most of the major search engines utilize an algorithm to determine where a website ranks. The search engines have set up specific criteria that a website must meet to get to the top of the list. The criteria are different for every engine, but all engines share several commonalities. It all boils down to the type and amount of content provided on a given website, the level of optimization done on the site, and the popularity of the website (link popularity/PageRank). Tailoring your website for improved search engine rankings is also known widely as search engine optimization, or SEO.

Steps

Research the keywords. Decide what search queries you want to show up for. Do some research on how many people are actually searching for your site. Many times it is best to consult a "natural search engine optimization" professional during this process. There are several tools available from Google, Overture, and third party software developers that can make the keyword research process easier.
2 Target niche keywords with low competition. Try to use Google Adwords to check how competitive before deciding on it. Besure that the keywords has enough searches. Try using broadkeywords too

  Think outside of the box. Don't just focus on your main keywords. The first thing to realize when targeting keywords is that it is not all about ranking for the most popular keyword. The most successful search engine marketing and optimization campaigns target the most relevant keywords. For example, if you are a realtor in a particular area, don’t just optimize your site for “real estate." Optimize your site for dentist, florist, movie theaters, etc. You would be amazed how many unique visitors will come through to your site when "outside of the box" thinking occurs.

Think about what your target market needs to accomplish their goals, and then put it on your site so that they can find it. Grow, grow, and grow. On average, one can target between 3-5 like keyword phrases per page. Make it as natural as possible and the Search Engines will reward you with a first-page ranking.

  Make sure that all the pages of the site have custom titles and descriptions. If your site is using the same tags for all the pages, you are not helping search engines figure out the subject or relevance of your individual pages. Regarding Meta Tags, there are 2 very important fields:
  - Title Tag - arguably the most important SEO tag for any website. Google supports approx. 60 characters in the title, while Yahoo allows for up to 110 characters in the title. It is important to target the most critical keywords in the Title. Every page should have a unique Title.
  - META Description Tag - These were once important but are no longer. Some engines do display the description defined, while others do not. Some search engines do read the description tag, and do utilize the content found within in the ranking process. Google, MSN and Yahoo give very little weight to no weight for these.

  To make sure that you have not missed any tags or damaged any links in the process, use an inspection tool to look over your website. In the process of inspection, you will also automatically be provided with a sitemap (refer to step 7 for significance).

  Keep the structure, navigation and URL structure of your site simple enough for search engines to follow. Remember that search engines cannot parse your navigation if it's using flash or javascript. So try to stay close to standard HTML when it comes to Navigation. URLs with dynamic parameters (?, &, SIDs) usually do not perform when it comes to search engine rankings.

  Create a site map that tells people where everything is on your site. You will get about a 1% click through rate to your site map. However, it will do wonders for those who know what site maps do, and the Search Engines will like it as well.

  Build up your popularity. So now you have determined the right keywords on the right pages, you've created all of the necessary content, and you've optimized all of the content to the best of your capabilities. Congratulations - you're now in the top 80th percentile (from an optimization standpoint) of the websites listed for the keywords you're trying to target. So how do you get a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd page listing? The answer is quite simple: You have to be the most popular, too. That's right, it's a popularity contest. In other words, how many other websites know you (link to you), and how popular are they? This is typically referred to as link popularity, or called PageRank by Google. The more sites that link to your site the better, and the more popular the site linking to you the more value you will receive for your link popularity. The best types of "link building" are directory registration, text link advertising, and press release distribution. Try to offer valuable information or tools so that other people are motivated to link to your site. Well-linked sites (that don't use spamming) do better in search engines.

  Build up good quality content. This will draw regular visitors to your website.

  Search engine algorithms assess the relevance of your page to any particular keyword by the content on your pages. For instance if you are selling "widgety widgets" on your site and you do not mention "widgety widgets" on your page text, search engines have very little to work with. Also make sure that you are not spamming search engines by using the same keyword over and over.
  Although not as important as they used to be, reciprocal links do still matter with Google. Reciprocate with similar websites and include keywords near the links on your site.
  If you want to optimize well for your city, state etc., make sure to sprinkle geographic search terms throughout. Include it in text as well as set apart. Search engines do not know where you are unless you tell them.
  Bold and italics can make your keywords stand out more with the search engines.
  Interior links within your site will improve SEO; Sitemaps are a great way to generate internal links and make your website better too!
  Correct broken links, search engines do not like dead ends.
  If you have over 30 keywords that mean business to you, then you might want to hire a Professional Search Engine Copywriting firm or outsource it to freelancers.
  Anyone who can go to google and type in "keyword research" will find very many tools that mixed with common sense should suffice quite well.
  Now when digging deeper to understand the traffic patterns of certain keywords use Wordtracker’s GTrends Tool. You can get an idea on the amount of competition on Google compared to the amount of searches. Now these numbers are far from accurate, BUTTT if you can kind of step back and take a broader look at things, don’t worry so much about the numbers but compare the trends since it shows the past history. See if its steady traffic, traffic that is going extinct, or traffic just starting to peak. By using this tool, you can many times find some golden opportunities.
  It really comes down to just using common sense. Just sit down and think, "What would other people search to find this? What would I search for to find this?" Try phrases in your keyword research tool to get new ideas and find the higher trafficked most targeted phrases. DO NOT look at the numbers spat back out at you by these programs as accurate numbers, they rarely are. You can still use these tools to get ideas on new keywords, search patterns of users, and many other things, that mixed with the information of trends in that area, can really help you.

How to create a php facebook application using the facebook php client api (FBML type)

Many people are curious about how to connect to the facebook api with php and so that’s what this blog post is all about. This quick tutorial will connect you to facebook using php and the facebook api in minimal time.

There are five main steps for when you want to create a facebook application using the Facebook PHP client API library. Below is some working source code that you can use to get started right away.

1. Sign up for the facebook developer application, Facebook Developer app
2.Setup a new application by clicking on the “Set up a New Application”. The application fields change position quite a bit so you’ll have to hunt around to set it up as follows.

Setup the app Render method to be FBML type
Setup the application type to be Web type instead of the other type (Desktop type)
Setup your Canvas Page URL which is the part you add onto the end of http://apps.facebook.com/YOUR APP NAME HERE/
Setup your Canvas Callback URL which is the full web address to the directory on YOUR server which contains your index.php file (This will become your facebook app)
Take note of both of your Canvas URLs above as well as your API key & your Secret key because you will probably be needing them during your development. (The facebook app also displays this info which you can view at any time)

3. We can put simple FBML into your index.php file and then visit your Canvas Callback URL to see if it loads up fine. Be sure this works before proceeding further.

4. Download the Facebook PHP client library and move it onto your server alongside your index.php file and make sure it works by using the following PHP code. If you get errors, then be sure your referencing the right directory(on linux systems, this is case sensitive). The facebook php client library can be downloaded from, Official facebook PHP client library

The require_login method will check to see if your user is logged into facebook. So if someone tries to visit your application directly by visiting http://apps.facebook.com/YOUR APP NAME HERE, it will prompt them to login. This method returns the id of the of the logged in user and stores it in $fb_user. We can do a lot of things with this user id. Make certain to keep your $facebook variable which gives us complete access to the facebook API.

Important Note: It’s been reported that when you use the above code and visit your application coming from http://apps.facebook.com/YOUR APP NAME HERE, it works great. However some people have noticed that the page loads continuously and seemingly endlessly if you visit the page directly on your server. Luckily, there is a quick fix if statement that simply checks if the $_POST["fb_sig_in_canvas"] is set or not and if it isn’t set, we wont bother loading up anything related to facebook since that most probably means that user didn’t arrive from facebook.

Below is the finalized code that has a quick check that should resolve your problems. You’ll notice I also moved all of the code into the if statement so that you should get a blank page if you arrive from outside of facebook somehow. Of course there are ways around this, but the whole point is to prevent the page reloading over and over issue. 5. YouTube Video Box

Video sharing can never be easier in Facebook fan pages. Say if you’re a blogger, showcasing self-made YouTube tutorial videos on WordPress customizations can both be helpful to your fans and own reputation. Or, import your favorite videos to share with fans depending on your page niche. Even humor can be an effective ice-breaker sometimes.

Tip: If you intend to upload videos from other video hosting sites, you can copy and paste the given video URL using the Link application. Alternatively, you can record and upload own video straight to Facebook using the Videoapplication.

6. RSS Graffiti

When we talked about autopost from blogs to Facebook Fan Page, integration tools and NetworkedBlogs are among the favorites. Thanks toHartley’s recommendation, I tried and fell in love with RSS Graffiti immediately – the updating is almost instantaneous! You can even configure a prefix to your latest blog post to be shown with the thumbnail image and post excerpt.

7. Static FBML

Here comes my favorite part of this article. For all bloggers you should be familiar with HTML codes for blog customizations and such. Well, now you can fix up a desired tab in your fan page according to your likings with Static FBML (Facebook Markup Language). This advanced feature allows page admins to modify or add extra info to their fan pages using the HTML or FBML, for example setup a landing page, displaying social media profiles etc.

How to make an awesome logo

In this tutorial, I will start and finish a logo while documenting the entire process. I encourage you to open up photoshop and follow every step, it will help you learn a lot more than just reading it.

I've used the technique I will be teaching to develop a lot of logos. Here are just a few:

Adobe Photoshop

I will be using Adobe Photoshop CS2 to design this logo. Many swear by illustrator, but I believe for the purposes of making a tutorial, it'd be best to use photoshop as it will cater to a wider audience. More people have used photoshop than Illustrator. Besides, I've created 95% of all my logos in Photoshop, so take what you will.

Let's Start : The Project

A buddy of mine runs a gaming website, bluelaguna.net, and he has wanted a new logo for some time, so I agreed to do it for this tutorial. So let's take a look at the current logo:

(Note: The image above isn't a logo, it's an entire header. The actual name bluelaguna.net along with the slogan is the actual logo. I thought it would be a good idea to show the entire header though to see how it reacts with the overall design.)

One of the most important things this logo lacks is readability. When a user visits a web site, or visits any medium in which a logo is displayed, the first thing that hits them should be the logo. And for some reason or another, the first place us humans look is the upper left hand corner of a site. The current logo is placed in the middle of the header and the small font and the dark blue in "BLUE" is hard to read.

There's also nothing exciting with this logo. For a logo to be effective, it has to "brand" an image, it needs to stick in your head. All this logo is is times new roman on caps lock.

Now that we've gone over why their current logo is not suitable, let's begin with the actual tutorial.

Gathering Information

It's important to always know the specifics of what you or the client is looking for before you start. Generally for most projects, I only need to ask the client 5 questions:

	1. Name of the service/product:	BlueLaguna.Net
	2. Any slogans to use?:	"Your #1 Source for RPG Media"
	3. Any specific color schemes in mind?:	Match the current design
	4. What are you trying to convey through the logo?:	Serious game-related site.
	5. Any other specifics:	You don't have to use the current header design. Get crackin'

Pretty straight forward, now we know what we have to work with.

1. Setting up your Document in Photoshop

Once you have photoshop open, go to File -> New. Then specify the name of the logo, and a width of600 and a height of 500.
Then click "OK" (Refer to the screenshot below).

After you click "OK" Your setup should look like this:

2. Experiment with Font Selections

As a starting point, I always experiment with a font that I think will work well with the logo. You have to develop an eye for what font will or will not work, with the specifics of the project in mind. Since for bluelaguna we're trying to focus on a serious yet gamer'ish feel, a serious font selection might be the best bet. Having yourself an arsenal of fonts is very important. I have several thousand myself.

Select the Text Tool on the left menu: (As shown on the image to the right)
Adjust the settings on the Text Properties at the top to match these settings:
In the character window to the right, set AV to -60 as shown below: (This simply shortens the space between each separate character, I like starting out with this setting, I don't know why :)
Type "BLUE LAGUNA" in the document space (First, be sure that the background is white, you can use the fill tool for this. And I've decided to go with all caps to start out with, since all caps is generally deemed more serious).
With the type tool selected, and layer 1 selected, select the font list menu (where it says Arial):

You can do this next section in either three ways.
- Hit the "Down" arrow to change the font view of "BLUE LAGUNA".
- Hit the Down Arrow of the Font List to see the list of available fonts with a tiny preview of the font.
- Download a font viewing program.

I personally just use the first method, although I sometimes use a font viewing program. Our goal here is to find fonts that might work with the logo.
Once you come across a font that looks like it could work, you should Duplicate the layer in the Layers Window to the right, and then hide the previous layer (The layer you right clicked and selected "Duplicate" from. This way, you've saved that font selection (the hidden layer), and you have a new layer to find more fonts from):

3. Good and Bad Font Selections

Since our goal with this particular logo is to be serious, we need serious looking fonts. It simply takes time to develop an eye for what is serious and what isn't.

Here are a few examples of bad font selections for this project:

The first logo (the top), has a very laid back, fun / unprofessional tone to it.

The second logo is simply "goofy" looking, and it's generally always bad to select a logo that has an inherent shadow.

The third logo is way too "ragged" with its frills all over the place, definitely a no go.

Calligraphy logos are generally outdated, especially ones with weird "drops" coming from them.

The last logo you can hardly even read. Remember, a logo should be easily readable.

Here are a few examples of good font selections for this project:

All of these logos with the exception of 4 and 6 are pretty much similar.

#1, 2, 3 & 5 are all very simplistic and serious in appearance.

Logo 4 still appears "serious" even though it is significantly different from the rest. I chose this just in case I want to experiment with piecing together fonts for the word "Blue" and "Laguna".

Logo 6 is a very bold / italicized logo that says nothing but serious.

4. Finalizing a Font Selection

Once you have some possible font selections, each in their own layer, you further analyze them and see which works. With logos that have more than one word, most of the time it is good to separate the appearance of the words from each other. Since this particular project has two words, "Blue" and "Laguna", we're going to want to separate them by possibly choosing two different fonts. You can also separate words from each other by keeping the same font, but changing the color. So I'm going to experiment with the 6 good font selections above.

This is what I've come up with:

Although I didn't use one of the 6 fonts I selected initially for the word "blue", I simply used an unboldened version of "LAGUNA", which keeps a consistent feel but also allows for separation of the two words.

5. Adding in a symbol

Sometimes logos work well with only the use of fonts, but most times adding in a relevant symbol of some sort will really make a logo stand out. When I say "symbol", I mean any part of the logo which isn't actual text. So let's start with the first font selection from above:

Now here is where having an eye for design and experience is a really big help. We need to begin contemplating ideas of what exactly we can add to this logo to make it awesome. So, the first thing I do is just sit there and stare at the font selection and think of what exactly the product/service/site is all about. Well, BlueLaguna.Net is about gaming, more specifically speaking, it's a site that offers RPG media (Role Playing Game) media. Therefore, we have two things to work with: RPG and Media. What exactly can we associate with both RPG and Media? Well, we don't necessarily have to convey both RPG and Media through the logo (if you try to get too complex, the logo will become cluttered). We can choose one or the other if we want. I think it'd be most logical to focus on the whole RPG aspect, as you can find media all over the place and it isn't an entirely unique concept.

So let's do some research on Role Playing Games. We need to figure out a symbol which can really represent RPG. The current BlueLaguna.Net features a 3d female, perhaps that has something to do with RPG? Well, let me do a search on images.google.com for "RPG". The results turn back a few different female characters, Hmm! The first few results, keeping in mind the 3d female character on the current header of bluelaguna.net, seem to suggest that depicting a female in the logo might be the best bet. It also seems that weaponry / mystical environments are associated with RPG as well.

Now that I know what I can associate with RPG, I can come up with some possible ideas for a symbol. I think maybe featuring a face of one of these RPG'ish females with maybe a hint of mysticism.

The Pen Tool is your Friend

The most important tool when it comes to logo design is the pen tool. If there is one tool to thoroughly understand, it should be the pen tool. The pen tool allows you to create any shape(s) you want, and maintain vector format (which is very important if you ever want to size your logo up n' down (for professional print or whatever.)

It's always good to draw your logo by hand without copying over a picture (vector tracing), but if you aren't very talented and don't have much experience, it might be your only option. So for the sake of making the biggest impact on this tutorial, I will teach you all an awesome technique for creating great looking symbols for you logos.

Finding a suitable picture

If you're going to trace, I always suggest using a site like istockphoto.com to find the image and pay for it. This way you won't be using copyrighted images to trace over. Or taking your own picture to trace over. Unfortunately though, istockphoto has nothing with RPG or "anime". So I just went on images.google.com and found a picture which I think is suitable, here it is:

When I came across this picture, I got the idea that I can vector trace over her face and hair to create what I want, and then integrate it along with the font selection in some unique way.

So once you've found the picture you want to trace (if not the same one), save it to your hard drive, open it up in photoshop, CTRL-A, CTRL-C to select it and copy it, and go back to your main logo document and CTRL-V.

Now you've imported this picture into your logo document. Once you've imported it, with her layer selected, you can cut off the bottom half of her body. (Select the first tool in the upper left corner of the tools menu, Rectangular Marquee Tool), select the bottom half of her body and hit the delete key. Your screen should look something like this by now (You can hide the text layers behind it).

Vector Tracing

Now select the magnifying glass in the tools menu and select around the girl, it will look like this zoomed up to about 400%:

Now select the pen tool in the tools menu:

Make sure that the foreground color (the black square at the bottom of the pic to the upper right ---^) is the same dark blue color of the text we specified.

In the layers window to the right, select the little round circular > icon on the upper right corner of the window, and click on "Create New Layer" in the window that comes up. Hit "OK" and then in the layers window, with the new layer selected, change the Opacity to 0%. We do this because once we start tracing over the image, we don't want the dark blue color hiding the picture of the girl below.

And with the pen tool selected, click a point somewhere on the outline of the hair (at the top), and then click to make another point somewhere on the hairline where the line will begin to form. You can hold down and "direction" the angle of the line to create a certain type of curve. It takes awhile to get the hang of, but it's very easy once you get the hang of it. After plotting points of an entire section of hair, yours should look similar to this: (Note: I've lightened the opacity of the girl to illustrate what your lines should look like so far)

It's not perfect, but for now it's a good start.

Now I'm simply going to continue creating more shapes, like the facial features. After 15-20 minutes or so of creating the different facial features and the face itself, here is what I have come up with:

As you can see, I specified a different color for the face (light blue). And by now I have around 15 different layers. There's a separate layer for the top portion of each eye, the bottom portion of each eye, the middle, and the small glare. There's also a layer for the face background, and the ear.

So let us continue and add some shading...

After about 20 more minutes of shading, this is what I've come up with:

There are a total of 3 different layers for the hair. It's somewhat of a tedious process to do hair shading simply because there's a lot of strands of hair! But you have to just condense them and get the general idea of the shading and it will work out well.

Then I did some light shading work on the face and the neck.

Now I consider the actual draft of the symbol complete. Let's make our initial text layer visible and see what we can do to integrate the symbol with the text.

First, you will want to select the very last to the very first vector layer that you created (you'll have a couple dozen or more), hold down the shift so you can select them all. Then in the layers window click the little circular round button and select "New Group From Layers". This will put all of the layers of the girl, into one easily manageable layer group. This way, you can move around the one group and it will keep all of their positions together so it won't break up her face.

Now this actually doesn't look too bad, in and of itself. But the proportion of the anime head is too big, in relation to BLUELAGUNA. So we will want to scale down the head. Let's try moving it over to the left, and adding the slogan + the ".net" text. This is what it looks like:

Now it looks pretty damn good eh? The only other thing I did, was with the pen tool, I added a white shape over the "B" in "BLUE" so that the face doesn't collide with the B.

Unfortunately I messed up and didn't design this over the dark blue'ish background that the bluelaguna.net has. So I'm going to change the colors of the logo to fit a background of an appropriate header for the site.

As you can see, simply changing colors around can really change the look and feel of a logo. I'd consider this logo a winner.

6. Conclusion

I can pretty much guarantee you that if you're a first time user of the pen tool or photoshop for that matter, it won't turn out so pretty like mine did. It takes some time and patience to really get the hang of it. It's all about getting a little creative and working at it for awhile.

I just got a message in Facebook from a friend whose Google Account was hijacked and the password was changed by the hacker. That person is now looking for some kind of a Google helpline to help him revive the account.

It can be a nightmare if someone else takes control of your Google Account because all your Google services like Gmail, Orkut, Google Calendar, Blogger, AdSense, Google Docs and even Google Checkout are tied to the same account.

Here are some options suggested by Google Support when your forget the Gmail password or if someone else takes ownership of your Google Account and changes the password:

1. Reset Your Google Account Password:

Type the email address associated with your Google Account or Gmail user name atgoogle.com/accounts/ForgotPasswd - you will receive an email at your secondary email address with a link to reset your Google Account Password.

This will not work if the other person has changed your secondary email address or if you no longer have access to that address.

3. For Hijacked Google Accounts Not Linked to Gmail

If your Google Account doesn't use a Gmail address, contact Google by filling this form. This approach may help bring back your Google Account if you religiously preserve all your old emails. You will be required to know the exact creation date of your Google Account plus a copy of that original "Google Email Verification" message.

It may be slightly tough to get your Google Account back but definitely not impossible if you have the relevant information in your secondary email mailbox.

Facebook Now Supports @ Tagging in Comments

Facebook has been supporting Twitter like @ tagging while writing new updates or wall posts. This helped users to mention their friend in their updates. However, annoyingly this feature was missing in their commenting system.

So if you wanted to reply to a specific person, you could not tag them. Instead, you would have to use @name to ensure that your comment was directed to the right person.

A little while earlier, I was trying to explain @ tagging to someone when I saw that the @ tagging actually works in comments too. This is definitely good news, because users will not be able to directly mention people in their comments.

Comment tagging works similarly to how the regular tagging works. You just have to type an @ followed by the person’s name or handle and a drop-down will be displayed to you. You can then choose which person or page you want to tag in the comment. When you have tagged someone in a comment they will receive a notification saying so.

Thousands of fonts are freely available throughout the Internet. Most of us have acquired font collections that number well into the hundreds. Yet, even with all of these fonts, finding the right one for our projects requires typing our text, then scrolling through and selecting font after font until we happen to hit the right one.

WordMark.it has a solution to this computer-age old problem.

To see a word or group of words in all of your available fonts, highlight wordmarkand type your own word or phrase.

Click the load fonts button. It will turn green as your mouse rolls over it.

Within a few seconds, your chosen text is displayed in every one of the installedfonts on your computer. Scroll down to see all of your font options.

To see the text displayed as white on black background, click the negative link at the top of the screen.

Click the smaller or bigger links at the top of the screen to resize the text.

To compare font styles side-by-side, select a few font options from your list by clicking on them, then click filter selected at the top of the screen.

How to Create Animation in Windows Live Movie Maker using MS Paint

Windows Live Movie Maker is a fun application that is part of the Windows Live suite of applications that Microsoft has developed to give users the ability to jazz up videos to make them look more professional.

Unfortunately, there is still no way to create animation in Windows Live itself however. This doesn’t mean you’re dead in the water though, as there is a way to create animation by combining MS Paint with Movie Maker, and it all harkens back to the old days of cartoon animation.

To begin, load MS Paint and start start drawing something that you would like to animate. In this example, we will create the animated effect of a car moving across the screen from one side to the other.

We begin by drawing the car freehand using all default attributes.

Next, use the Select tool to “capture” the car. Draw a rectangle around the car as close to the car as possible, and then let go; next click on the Cut command on the main menu.

As soon as you click on Cut, the car should disappear, then immediately click on thePaste icon. The picture you just cut out should now reappear, with the frame still around it, this means you can drag it to wherever you wish on the paint canvas. To create the illusion of movement, move the image (car) to one side of the screen to begin its journey across the screen, moving from left to right:

Click the File command icon, and then choose Save as. Choose any filename you like, but end it with the number 1. In this case, we’ll call it c1, for car 1.

Next, hit the Back icon to undo what you just did; the car should disappear again. Click on the Paste icon again, to paste it back in, then move it again, just as you did the first time, only this time, put it slightly ahead of where you did the first time.

Then, do the Save as thing again, only this time, name it with a 2, e.g. c2.

Repeat this whole process as many times as it takes to get the car moved all the way across the screen with each step along the way saved as a unique series of consecutive file names.

Then, close down Paint and fire up Windows Live Movie Maker; click on Add videos and photos:

Use the file manager tool that is launched to maneuver to and locate the files you just created in Paint. Double-click on the first one, in this case, C1, to open it. It should look something like this:

It should show up in both the big main pane and in the little pane on the right, indicating that it will be the first image displayed in the “video.”

Open the rest of the images you created in Paint, one after another in sequence until all of the images have been loaded.

If you choose to play the movie as things are at this point, the time that each image is shown on the screen would be far too long, and thus it wouldn’t look animated. To fix that, we need to change the amount of time each image is displayed.

To do that, click on the the first image in the sequence, then while holding down the Shift key, move to the last one, then click on it as well. This should cause all of your images to be selected. It should look something like this:

Next, click on the Edit tab from the main menu and type .25, as in ¼ of a second, in the duration box. You want the application to hold onto each picture just long enough for it to be displayed,which means the player will move through all of them quickly enough to simulate motion.

Finish by clicking the Play button under the main viewing screen:

You should see your images load sequentially, one after the other, quickly enough so that it appears as if your image is moving across on the screen. This is exactly how animation used to be done, except the images were drawn by hand, then flashed quickly in front of a camera which recorded the action as an animated movie.

This same technique can be used to simulate multiple characters moving around, or just their mouths moving to simulate them speaking. It can also be done by taking a series of photographs of an object that is moved slightly between each take.

The problem: You have documents, photos, music and other important files on the home computer. How can you “remotely access” these files from your office computer or, when you are travelling, from your mobile phone?

The solution: The simplest solution would be that you copy all your data from the home computer on to a portable hard drive and carry it around but this is obviously a bit cumbersome approach as it requires you to manually sync the home computer and your portable disk.

Access Files on your Computer over the Internet

There are couple of ways by which you can retrieve files stored on your home computer from anywhere else using a regular Internet connection.

Option 1: Using Online Backup

You can use an online backup service like SugarSync, Carbonite, SkyDrive or even Dropbox– they provide desktop utilities that will automatically upload files on your home computer to the Internet and you can then access these files through the web browser of any other Internet connected computer.

The upside is that your files will always be available to you even if the home computer is not running. SugarSync and Carbonite have a mobile optimized website so you can access files from any mobile phone as well.

The downside is that if you are using any of these services for the first time, you’ll to wait until they upload all your data to the cloud and this process may take long if you have too many files on the home computer.

Option 2: Using Desktop Sharing Software

There are free desktop sharing software like TeamViewer and UltraVNC that also let you remotely access your computer files from anywhere else. LogMeIn Pro and CrossLoop Home are some other good options for transferring files from a remote computer but these are paid services.

If all your computers are running Windows, you can use the built-in remote desktop connection feature of Windows (available in XP and later) to access your home computer from another Window computer over the Internet.

With Desktop Sharing software, you’ll always have access to all your files but one big limitation is that it requires that the remote computer stays on. Also, none of these options will help you access files on a mobile phone except LogMeIn which has an iPhone app.

Option 3: Access Files Directly through the Browser

Online backup services, discussed above, will copy files to their own servers before you can access them for anywhere else. Screen sharing services are often slow and they won’t work on most mobile devices. Let’s now explore another set of services that allow you download files directly from the home computer.

Copernic, like Google Desktop, is a popular desktop search software that you may use to find emails, documents and other files on your Windows computer. They have a paid component called myCopernic on the Go that lets you remotely search for content stored on the home or office computer. You can preview the search results and then download them to your mobile phone or remote PC.

With Opera Unite, you can easily turn your computer into a web server and instantly access files and folders on that computer from any other web browser (including that of mobile phones). Opera Unite is a standard web server and therefore you’ll be downloading files directly from the computer – they’re not uploaded anywhere else.

Another option is GBridge that lets you setup a virtual private network using your existing Google Account. Companies use VPNs to let employees access corporate data over a public network (Internet) and with GBridge, even home users can build their own VPNs to access remote files more securely.

Windows Live Sync at sync.live.com is another great choice for remotely accessing files over the Internet. Just install the Live Sync client on your computer and you can then access the entire hard drive of that computer simply through the Windows Live Sync website.

Live Sync is available for both Mac and Windows. The new version of Live Sync is even better and it has integrated online storage (Live Mesh) so you’ll be able to access your important file even if the remote computer is off.

Finally, you may also want to check out HomePipe – this is an extremely easy and free service that lets you access your home files and media from any other computer or mobile phone. Install the HomePipe Agent and all files on that computer will instantly become available through the web. They also have apps for iPhone and Android phones.

You just wrote an Excel formula and it isn’t producing the result you expected? Have no fear – this article will introduce you to the ‘Evaluate Formula’ tool which you can use to discover why your formula isn’t working. The Evaluate Formula tool achieves this by showing you the steps Excel takes to calculate your formula. This is very useful when you need to find a problem with a formula, or to understand the calculation process.

Finding the wrong value

Let’s look how the ‘Evaluate formula’ tool can be used to trace a problem, by looking at the following sample:

You can see that something is amiss with the formula in cell C3. The formula adds 1+2+3 (cells A2, A3 and A4) and then divides the result by 3 (cell B3); this should evaluate to 2 (6 divided by 3). But we got 2.4. By opening the Evaluate Formula tool (from the Formula Auditing area of the Formula ribbon), we can work the calculation of this value step by step (click the Evaluate button in the Evaluate Formula dialog to advance):

First we’ll examine the mechanics of the display. The underlined part of the formula in each step is the part that will be evaluated in the next step. The italic part of the formula in each step is the part that was evaluated in the previous step.

In this case, the one-but-last step seems off: we expected B3 to contain 3, but it seems to contain 2.5. The problem is probably that the cell’s display is set to show zero decimal places:
And there you have it – we’ve found the problem. Changing the cell’s formatting to show decimal places will show that cell B3 contains 2.5.
