________________
In my work, I explore space and memories. The space between atoms, cells, between people, objects, air, stars, water and sky; the cosmic glue which holds us and the universe together. I like to push and pull, bringing other dimensions.
My process combines brush painting, layers of color and shapes, with brayers that give printmaking or stamp like quality. Brush strokes mimic calligraphy gestures I used to practice in my youth. The layering process is enhanced by my use of color and shape, suggesting textile, landscape and familiar pop culture.
My forms and strokes that reappear and disappear in all of the pieces signal cell divisions, electrons and atoms as well as consciousness and interconnectedness. Unity as a whole is my foundation.
When we come home to an empty house, we would still say, “I’m home.”
There’s no one there to reply, and yet, something lingers in the space—an invisible presence,
A quiet stillness conveys to us that something is there.
That presence is what we call FENAMENA.

It asks for nothing, and gives nothing in return.
It simply is.
Being there in silence is the essence of FENAMENA.
We can not sway FENAMENA—it remains beyond our reach.

ART BEASTIES is a collective of Japanese artists that began in New York in 2013.
For its members, the relationship they share through ART BEASTIES is, in itself, a kind of FENAMENA.

In passing, FENAMENA may also be quietly present somewhere in this very space.
____
Saying “I’m home” into an empty room — this simple act seems to carry a sense of gratitude and reverence for the space itself.
In Japan, greetings directed not at people but at “something else” present in a space are deeply rooted in Shinto beliefs, local folk traditions, and cultural education. It’s an everyday sensibility shaped by a spiritual and natural worldview. Just as Japanese schoolchildren learn to care for their environment through daily cleaning, the practice of showing respect for a space is woven into daily life.
The exhibition title FENAMENA is a coined word that refers to that “something” — not a person, but a presence. Whether it be a spirit, a yokai, a consciousness, a memory, or history — though invisible, it is something whose presence is deeply felt. The venue for this exhibition, KOBO (at HIGO) in Japantown/ID, also seems to quietly breathe with the presence of FENAMENA, alongside its own layered history.
ART BEASTIES is a Japanese Artists Collective situated internationally, founded in New York in 2013. With members varying widely in terms of their places of residence, ages and styles of art, the group focuses on dialogue and the creative process itself as they continue their work through exhibitions.
Like FENAMENA, the collective fosters a subtle yet enduring presence — an unseen connection between people and place. At its core, it simply is.
We hope this exhibition offers visitors a moment to notice and reflect on the FENAMENA quietly residing in their own surroundings.
___________

ART BEASTIES

KOBO (at HIGO) in Japantown/ID

ART BEASTIES

ART BEASTIES is a Japanese Artists Collective situated internationally in NY, Seattle, London & Tokyo. The members regularly meet in the Internet, informing and inspiring each other to find alternative ways to recognize, devise and present Japanese contemporary art and ideas.

The members will work on individual project(s), and share their “in-process” images and notes throughout the duration of the residency. This will create complex feedback loops between the artists hopefully to unearth the new perspectives on Japanese art today.

The collective will stage a “co-working” office space inside Alhadeff Studio, in order to organize and exhibit the data and knowledge gathered during the incubation. The group will also contemplate on the feeling — social anxiety stemming from “working together alone” in such “shared” space.

_____
The Cornish Arts Incubator Residency aims to facilitate the risk taking in the allied arts. The goal for this program is to support artists in the creation of work that is outside the boundaries of their genre, discipline, or comfort zone. The intention of Arts Incubator is not to create a final, polished product. Instead, the program seeks to give artists time and space to incubate and begin to develop an idea, concept, or exploration. The residency is part of Cornish Playhouse’s public benefit to the Seattle community.

ART BEASTIES

PAST EVENT ARCHIVES no.7:

In the Shadow of Olympus

The group exhibition titled In the Shadow of Olympus will be held in March 2018 at SOIL Gallery.
Less than a second later the flame was extinguished in Rio de Janeiro, the machination of Olympics has commenced its tumbling journey aimed toward Tokyo. If there was a straight flight path connecting the two cities, the airplane would fly over Seattle with a payload of extreme anticipation and anxiety. The exhibition would revolve around the idea of politics, economy, history, and the symbology of the long standing global ceremony. The forthcoming Tokyo Olympics preparation and promotion will be examined from the point of view of Japanese artists with various sentiments ranging from: positively enthusiastic to pessimistically dystopian.
The participating artists are members of Japanese artist collective, Art Beasties based in Seattle, NY, London and Tokyo. The group members frequently engage each other intersecting multiple time-zones through Skype meetings, in order to shape and advance the projects.

During the Opening Reception, some connected via Skype and others physically present in SOIL gallery, Art Beasties will conduct a meeting. It is an “open-process” performance filmed and recorded simultaneously in multiple point of views. The recordings will be analyzed and edited in order to contemplate on the place for, and function of a Japanese Artists Collective in the world
today.

ART BEASTIES is a Japanese artist collective based in New York City. We live in different time zones; NY, Seattle, Tokyo and Kobe; we communicate online and some of us never met in person. Starting off from experiencing somewhat counter-intuitive and awkward moments created through E-mail, Skype or SNS communication between three time zones, we explore the gap in our perception of time in the different time zones. The Art Beasties members investigate new discoveries and possibilities that miscommunications; time lag, digital glitch and cultural and linguistic context would create the process. The projects include painting, photography, printing, sculpture installation, video installation, clothing, knitting and contemporary dance performance.

Art Beasties welcomes you to join us at Culture Fix for our second show, Fluid Destination. The effects of a global world and a global identity are prevalent in our daily lives; we live half of it online, and many of us spend the other half in flux between two countries or two cultures.

In order to establish ourselves as members of a global community we must constantly flow and change; deciding whether to take the shape of our surroundings like water in a vase, or whether to extend our identity to contain new ideas of who we are and our live, constantly leaving traces of ourselves as we travel, and leaving things behind to discover new experiences.

For this show we ask our participating artists to meditate on the fluidity of their work and their experiences, bringing forth a personal and inspired expression of the implications of living globally.

I want to catch beauty that originally exist in the world, its such as the textures, motions. and memory. These things must be change and lost. All sensation, all emotion, all lovers, we hope to cherish these things forever, but disappeared without our noticing in no time at all.

Through Art (“Geijutsu”), I pursuit the appetite for the truth.
Why must I be here? What are we clinging to? In this world where everything will go and be lost, What kind of meaning that has?
Art, its only way to believe there is give us the answer in.
Because my Art pieces based on the appetite to seek the truth in affirming the Existence of the world.

“We have art in order not to die of the truth.” Friedrich Nietzsche

When busy recording the dairy of living, we see singular aspects of the mirror that may only result as surface and visual.

I want you to imagine a scenario in which, spread inside of the mirror, closely resembles the inner world of an aquarium.

There are various life forms which show us rich colors and faces with these windows. It is, however, solely you who is in the mirror.

In this space, it may be your friends; it may be people whose names you do not know.

It may be just a vision of a social community surrounds us.

As is often told, the origin of life was born from ocean. Since then, tiny species like microorganisms or even single cells had to coexist with others. Even the relationship between single cells need to thrive in order to survive this world.

A lingering question: can’t we see the origin of community within human beings in this micro-world?

When you stand in front of mirror, you are placed between two worlds – each of which resemble each other.

The vision of you and your world appears outside of the mirror.

The vision of primitive memory appears inside of the mirror.

Your viewpoint as a viewer becomes a door, which connects one’s inner and outer side.

When we stare fixated at the origin of life and community, we realize that we are kept alive by nature and by our role in the community.

I am asking myself habitually: what is my role in the community, when facing the content of my work?

I create sculptural installations with ceramics as my primary medium that explore a sense of place, relationship, identity and formal structure. My work challenges the aesthetic restraint of my traditional cultural roots through active experimentation with new media and contemporary issues: cross-cultural, multi-faceted contemporary sculptural forms that reflect and challenge our specific time, place, culture, and social environment. I consider both the macro and micro worlds and how they shift within the internal, human and subjective perspective, how they become increasingly confused, chaotic and full of turmoil. My work questions the tenuous connection between the two worlds; the internal subjective self and the external world of cultural façade.
