Bo Kaap 1 and Bo Kaap 2

They are collaged pieces from magazine, paper, and painted watercolors. The piece is based on a neighborhood in Cape Town South Africa in 2000. I was struck how the homes in that area were painted the most amazing vibrant hues. It always stuck with me and taught me to not be so intimidated by the use of such vibrant colors. I wished that I could live in one of those homes. The area is also one of the more culturally diverse neighborhoods in already one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world.

"It’s always inspiring to be part of a meaningful art benefit, whenever I can I want to be part of such positive community building events. Not sure if you’ve heard of this wonderful initiative, Art Blocks for Ghana, but you’ll find a lot of information here, and even participating artists’ process here! Everyone is working with the same woodblock which I found pretty great. Bit of an adventure for most of us, I ended up, after a light pencil drawing, trying to watercolor it and the pigment was really seeping into the horizontal wood texture. It was hard to get much definition but I really started loving the wood grain, so I was really hoping I could let it show through the colors. After a few passes of watercolor I started using gouache to get a little more opacity. But as you can see I still left it pretty watery … during most of the process I was thinking might have to cover this mess and glue some watercolor paper on top of it. But more and more I started to really like its feel. So I ended up putting a couple of coats of gloss varnish to add a nice textured shine to it. And that’s it I think I might call this done!"

"The Submitted box piece (Apartment #58) stems from long time fascination with the people who make their home in the large tenements and apartment buildings found in the older parts of the city"

"I grew up in the depths of the suburbs, and the neighborhoods with which i'm familiar seem flat and banal to me. But the shirtless fat man in #58; he's an interesting specimen"

"Home Sweet Home" Pencil,8 x 8 Panel

"The word "home" has always felt more rural than urban to me and as soon as I received my art block an image of a country mouse just popped into my head. I've always loved stories of little forest critters and mythical creatures and imagining their little worlds was one of my favorite things growing up (and still is). I did the concept digitally and then the final with normal "blue" pencils starting with a sketch and then darkening it in."
