I had five small mixed media pieces in a holiday boutique in Burbank, CA, including "Constellations at Dusk." For the boutique, all of the art was beautifully matted and framed so that the edges of the handmade cotton rag paper show. All of the pieces have a space/sky theme and are made with metallic and glitter paint, perfect for a colorful, sparkly holiday!

I had ten small digital prints in the Holiday Bazaar, a gallery full of affordable art of all styles. On opening day, there were handmade gifts and treats, and in the evening there was entertainment and a gift wrapping contest. Great fun for all who visited!

Each summer Rochester Contemporary Art Center’s "6x6" exhibition and fund-raising auction brings together thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international & local artists, designers, and local school kids. Artworks must be six inches square (my work is 5" square with a 1" border to allow for matting) and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously. All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each to benefit RoCo. Artists’ names will be revealed to the buyer upon purchase and all artworks remain on display through July 16. I haven't done this show for a couple of years, so it's good to be back again!

"Sketchbook" is broadly interpreted by participating artists. Mine includes a brief intro plus a total of 28 digital geometric drawings printed on pages made from glossy photo paper and rebound into the 5"x7" book.

In addition to being held in the permanent collection of the library, the sketchbooks will be digitized and searchable online, and the books themselves will go on tour this summer to Toronto, Chicago, and Atlanta!

Fine Arts Federation Show Photos + Tucasa Women's History Month Show Closes

The Fine Arts Federation Membership Show is an annual event at the Betsy Leuke Creative Arts Center Gallery in Burbank, CA. It usually features close to 60 artists. My entry was a drawing from 2001 that had never been shown before. There's always a lot of pottery in this exhibit because the center has an active pottery studio in the back. The gallery itself is beautiful. The show closed March 22nd.

This event celebrated the renaming of the center in honor of
the late Burbank arts supporter, Betsy Leuke.

Tucasa celebrated National Women's History Month with an art exhibit featuring women artists. It opened March 2nd with "An Art & Music Night" at Sabor y Cultura in Los Angeles, CA. I had five mounted digital prints from my "Songbook" series in this show, which just closed on April 30th. Sabor y Cultura, known as a "coffeehouse with flavor and culture," is a charming venue that offers tasty light meals and evening entertainment in addition to its rotating art shows.

I'm delighted that my 36"x36" digital print on canvas entitled, "Notes 101C," sold at a premium price of $500 in last month's fundraising auction benefiting Art Share L.A. Thank you to the generous collector who purchased it!

I will not be at the Brewery Art Walk, but my mask will! Curator Dulce Stein will recreate her Latino Art Museum mask show in the studio of Ashira Siegal Fox. My mask: $100. Art Walk is April 7th and 8th from 11 AM to 6 PM both days.

Coming soon: Rochester Contemporary Art Center's annual "6x6" show which raises funds for the center in Rochester, NY. All work is six inches square and sells for only $20! You'll get details in time for the global online preview on May 18th.

25 Year Retrospective - Reception Photos

Last week, the North Hollywood Senior Arts Colony presented the opening reception for my 25 Year Retrospective art show. NoHo SAC is one of the arts colonies created by the non-profit EngAGE, Inc., for which I'm Websites/Social Media Manager as well as an Experience Talks Radio Show producer/host. I'm grateful to EngAGE CEO/Founder Tim Carpenter, EngAGE CAO Nancy Goodhart, and NoHo SAC Program Director Sara Debevec for hosting the show in the beautiful lobby gallery shared by NoHo SAC and the Road Theatre on Magnolia. The evening included delicious food from Porto’s and fine entertainment by keyboardist Rex Perry. In addition to celebrating 25 years of exhibiting art, the event also marked my 10th anniversary of meeting Tim and my affiliation with the Experience Talks Radio Show, and my 70th birthday!

Last year I created a Facebook album to mark my 25th anniversary of making art. This year, I'm pleased to celebrate the 25th anniversary of exhibiting my art. In 1992, I was accepted into my first show, the Southern California Juried Open. Since then, I've shown my work in over 80 juried and invitational shows, plus many Art Walks and fairs.

Over the years, I've made hand-colored photos, mixed media work, paintings, drawings, installations, and digital art. It's been a very interesting exploration of media and style, one that continues today.

I hope you'll join me at the reception to see this eclectic exhibition!

Hosted by writer Genie Davis, The Loft at Liz's presents a silent auction and raffle featuring dozens of art works donated by prominent Los Angeles area artists to raise funds for long-term medical care for chronic tick-borne disease affecting her daughter, Nicole, and two-year-old grandson, Aaron.

Art Inspiration from Ancestors: Italian Majolica

I've been having fun exploring the arts and crafts of the cultures in my family history. I have some Italian ancestry, but it turns out that the connection goes back much further than I'll ever be able to trace on the family tree. My DNA puts me in a haplogroup (people with one shared ancestor thousands of years ago) that comprises only a fraction (0.2%) of people from England and some other Northern European locales, but is much more prevalent in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Italy. So: Italy.

Traditional Italian crafts include laces, mosaics, leather work, quilting, and wood inlay, but I was interested in pottery, specifically majolica. I inherited one small majolica plate that prompted the search for information.

The name 'majolica' (maiolica) comes from the Spanish island of Majorca where ships carrying lusterware from Valencia stopped on their way to Italy. Italian majolica is earthenware with an opaque white tin oxide glaze. Its most outstanding feature is the beautiful, colorful decoration which never fades. Majolica is usually associated with the Renaissance when it hit its aesthetic peak, but it has been produced in Italy since about 1350 and is still produced today.

Family + Art/Craft: Quilts

Family + Art/Craft: An artist friend of mine emailed yesterday that she thought my work looked like "Amish quilts on acid!" Once again, I wonder if I was influenced by the beautiful quilts I inherited from my grandmother. Although not Amish, they have the familiar patterns that were popular throughout the mid-west in the late 1800s and early 1900s. My quilts were made by my grandmother, great-grandmother, at least one great-aunt, and a quilting group of women to which my grandmother and her sister belonged. I grew up with one of the quilts always on my parents' bed, and my mother has one on her bed today. There are several more. I think it's time to retrieve them from storage to enjoy again.

Family + Art/Craft: Hand-painted China Plates

Family + Art/Craft: On the kitchen walls are six beautiful hand-painted plates. They've gone from home to home with me, ever since I inherited them from my maternal grandmother. They are all different in style, I don't know how old they are, and I'd have to look at the backs to be reminded of their pedigree -- or lack of one. I just checked the smallest one that has a delicate floral border. It's marked "Stouffer's Hand Decorated" which means it was painted between 1905 and 1907 at the Stouffer Studio in Chicago. It's also marked J&C Bavaria, referring to Jaeger & Co. which produced china in the Marktredwitz area in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany. Was it their manufacture? That's what the mark would indicate. Their design? I wonder. ~ I have always loved these plates. Florals, a still life of fruit, and a pastoral landscape. I can't imagine living without them. Art Inspiration from Ancestors: Belgian Lace

I've always loved lace and have several beautiful items which were made by my great aunt, who was very adept at all kinds of needlework. Is my affinity for lace -- and was hers -- influenced by our family history? From the late 1500s to 1663, our ancestors lived in a city called Kortryk (Dutch) or Courtrai (French) in the Spanish Netherlands which, in modern times, became Belgium. Belgium has long been known for its superb lace, and it turns out that Courtrai was a center of lace-making at that time, due, in significant part, to its location. The thread used in making the exceptionally delicate Brussels lace is of exquisite fineness and the steeping of flax for its creation was done in the nearby river, Lys, "which gives better results than any other water." ("A History of Handmade Lace," Emily Jackson, 1900)

Art Inspiration from Ancestors: Austria/Germany/Hungary/Poland/Russia/Ukraine Embroidery

I like to look at traditional textiles and embroidery to learn about color and pattern. All of these countries contribute to my Ashkenazi heritage.

So far, my father's paternal ancestry has been traced back to 1737, but the quest for understanding where the family is from is complicated. The province in which my paternal gggg-grandfather was born is now in Poland, but Poland didn't exist at that time. Genealogist cousin Bill explains: "The area was repeatedly partitioned between the Kingdoms of Russia, Prussia, and France. Members of each of the three Friedlob clans could have been born in the same Provence, and have been variously under Russian and/or German occupation at the time - the borders changing with time, without the towns relocating. (I thought I just heard the plaintive strains of the theme from Fiddler on the Roof playing somewhere in the background?)"

Turns out my paternal great-grandfather, who immigrated to the US in 1880, declared Russia as his place of birth.

My paternal grandmother's parents emigrated in 1883 from Austria. In the 1920 census, they declared that their native language was German. I remember being told that her family was from Austria/Hungary. Boundaries changed often in that area, too.

When I was searching for images to post, I was surprised that so many vintage pieces were not able to be identified specifically by country. Posters would list two or three possibilities. Sometimes arbitrarily imposed national boundaries just don't mean much when you're looking at arts/crafts -- or family histories!

Exploring another branch on the family tree, this time looking at colorful traditional embroidery from 18th and 19th century Hungary. I like to look at embroidery and textiles to get a sense of traditional patterns and colors. The website of the Hungarian Folklore Museum in Passaic, NJ, has an interesting article about the history of Hungarian embroidery.

"Skyline 102" is included in this show. It's a small piece from my series of digital drawings devoted to cityscapes inspired by jazz. Juror Mat Gleason viewed 1397 images submitted by 390 artists and picked only 49 artworks for the exhibit. I appreciate his support of my work.

I won't be at the reception, but Mat will do a gallery walk through starting at 7 p.m. and that should be an experience you won't forget! Outspoken founder of the highly controversial Coagula Art Journal, Mat is an internationally recognized art critic and curator of contemporary art, as well as the owner of Coagula Curatorial, his gallery of contemporary art on Chung King Road in L.A.’s Chinatown. Art Maze is a UK-based, internationally distributed print and digital magazine that offers a juried and curated display of artwork from around the world, along with interviews and studio visit articles.

Cheyanne Sauter, Executive Director of Art Share LA, guest juror for this issue, has curated an eclectic selection of art, including "Notes 101E." Art Inspiration from Ancestors: Antique Dutch Samplers

Thanks to research by my brilliant genealogist cousin Bill, the earliest ancestors in my Dutch maternal grandfather's line can be traced to a little Flemish town now in the modern country of Belgium. The family emigrated from Amsterdam to the U.S. over 350 years ago. Maybe this explains, in part, my interest in these charming antique Dutch samplers! The other part would be their lovely, colorful, geometric designs.

From Vanessa Boer's blog: "Darning Samplers were prevalent in the Netherlands in the late 18th and early 19th century as sewing was a vital skill for 12 - 17 year old girls to learn. Young girls were taught how to embroider by their mothers as well as in school. Working as a linen seamstress could provide a steady living for these young women and their families. It was especially important for the girls in orphanages to master these skills so they would have an occupation to support themselves upon leaving the home. The training was so serious that these darning samplers were considered a sort of final exam in the orphanages. Because of the bright thread used to show the stitches and craftsmanship more clearly, the patterns and layers of color make beautiful combinations!"

"Moods" Reception at Carter Sexton

Quite a nice reception last night at Carter Sexton for the "Moods" show, which is up through July 4th. The art was hung throughout the store and nicely labeled. My three pieces are above an entry from the first to the second of three large rooms. I had to leave after an hour, and people were still coming in. Lots of interesting conversation among the neighborhood artists. Somehow I got out of there without buying any supplies!

I'll be at the reception from 5 until 6 p.m.

Each of the three pieces is about 6"x9" unframed, on handmade cotton rag paper from India. My framer did an especially fine job on all, floating them so you can see the beautiful deckled edges of the paper.

I had a lot of fun making these glittery creations and look forward to making more. It's a nice change-of-pace from my digital work.

This is definitely a show by artists, for artists, because Carter Sexton is an excellent shop for art materials. Stop by to check out the exhibit and I guarantee that you won't get out the door without some inspirational supplies!
