Peace (Hebrew) Daily Painting #65

This is a 10" x 10" canvas painted with arylics and pouring medium. The background effect was created by using at least 10 layers of pouring medium and soft bodied acrylics, spread around with pallet knives as if it were plaster.

On top of the background is the word "Peace" in Hebrew. My friend Noora from Oman inspired this painting. This will end up being a series... peace paintings in Arabic, Japanese, Sanskrit will follow.

As I painted this in my live blogtv show, it created a lot of talk. Who knew a word such as "peace" could bring up so much hostility? ;) not everyone felt that way, but I did chuckle inside just how much many of us demand peace, but never in a million years realize the only way to achieve world peace is to start with yourself. Mother Teresa was once quoted saying, "You want world peace? Go home and love your family." I don't think it gets any better than that.

This is an acrylic painting on a 12”x12” canvas and the subject is of a pug. I used brushes to paint the pug and then I used my pouring medium paints and pallet knives to create the background effect.

The pug has many different colors within it - blue, purple, red, green, pink, orange, yellow. Pretty much every single color is in this. He has a little red collar on too.

then the background was created with my pouring medium acrylic paints. You can see in some of my videos on youtube (from the blog tv show) how this came together.

This painting is of two koi fish swimming in a pond. It is an oil painting on an 8” x 10” canvas.

I’m a BIG fan of koi fish. I don’t know why but I just am a freak for them. I could probably sit and watch them swim for hours and hours. One day I will have a home with a koi fish pond (its on my vision board too;)

Cat Nap Daily Painting #62

This is an oil painting on a 6” x 8” canvas and the subject is of a sleeping cat.

A friend of mine (Named “Gitty”) from Holland from my BlogTV show shared this photograph with me of her cat, Binky. During the show, we were talking about her cat and she told us that someone poisoned him and he died as a result from it. All of us in the chat room were so sorry for her loss that I felt it would be nice to do a painting of him in honor of “Gitty”.

So my dear friend, Gitty - this is for you. I hope it brings joy to your heart after such a tragic loss. I cannot image what you went through.

Barack Obama Daily Painting #59 by Gayle Etcheverry

Okay, last week I really wanted to paint this picture of Barack Obama in honor of the Inauguration. I was working on the SAG Awards show painting the set. So here he is.

If you look closely there are TONS of colors - light pink, hot pink, red, burgandy, purple, dark blue, light blue, green, lime green, yellow, orange just to name a few. The only places I used black are in the pupils and in the shading behind the collar of the jacket. Dark purples, blues, greens, reds and browns are in the coat. His shirt is pink, purple, blue and white.

This is an 8"x10" canvas and is painted in oils. Of course this is VERY WET and will not be ready to ship for a few weeks.

I decided on a split background, putting the red on the left side and the blue on the right side. If you know me at all.... I just like to put things upside down on their heads. There is a great quote by George Bernard Shaw, "You see things as they are and ask 'Why', but I see things that never were and ask, 'why not?'" - I guess that could explain who I am in a nutshell. Yeah I'm a nut, "Every great oak tree was once a nut that stood its ground!" ;)

Carousel Daily Painting #58 by Gayle Etcheverry

This is an oil painting on an 8”x10” canvas. The subject is of a carousel horse. I’ve always loved the carousel ride at fairs and still ride them as an adult. The image came from a book I bought a long time ago about carousel horses.

I actually painted this last week, but them immediately started my annual SAG Awards job, painting the set with my professional painting partner and friend, Dena D’Angelo. I wasn’t able to upload this painting to the website until now.

So the show is over and I am back to the Daily Paintings again.

This is an oil painting on a 10”x10” canvas. The subject is of a winter landscape - mountains, trees fill the background and a large tree with no leaves is in the foreground.

I wanted to try a winter scene because I am going to be creating a commissioned painting of a winter tree for a dear friend. I thought it would help me get in the ‘mood’ of a winter scene since its been in the 80s here in Los Angeles for the past week. Not that I am complaining, but it is hard to really grasp that most of my country is buried under a pile of snow.

Todays painting is of a Jazz singer from New Orleans named Grandpa Elliot. My friend Brooke emailed this photograph to me a long time ago, someone in her family took the shot on a trip to New Orleans and she thought it might make a good painting. I loved it from the first time I saw it.

Funny thing is I often hold on to photographs and then one day become inspired to paint them. About 3 days ago I began to think about Grandpa Elliot and decided to paint it in the upcoming days. THEN, a day later, my friend Keaton (worlds best art director BTW) emailed me a link to a video from http://www.playingforchange.com (WATCH THIS VIDEO!!) and low and behold Grandpa Elliot was singing in the song!! I thought to myself, “okay OKAY I get it... it’s time to paint Grandpa Elliot!”

Grandpa Elliot is an oil painting on an 8”x10” canvas. I just love this painting. I think he is so sweet. And after you watch the video mentioned above you’ll love him even more.

This is an oil painting on an 8”x10” canvas. The image is of a close up sideways view of a Buddha face. Lots of intense color was used in the application of this piece. Look closely and you’ll find hot orange, lime green, purple, blue, gold and many other colors.

To add some texture to the painting I spattered white, dark blue and light blue spots all over. Also from the top you’ll find whites, golds, blues, purples and greens drip down the canvas. This is a technique I’ve used in the past and really enjoy the final look of it. You just kind of have to trust it will all work out, because you are literally just dripping paint thinner down the canvas - so any work previously done is washed down the canvas.

No youtube video on this one - I blanked on bringing up the camera the other day when I finished the painting after the live broadcast on Friday. Oh well, c’est la vie, eh?

This is a painting of a Bald Eagle but with my color spin on it. It is an oil painting on an 8”x10” canvas. One note, the only black paint I used was in his pupil. The rest is all in blues, purples, and browns. And in the white of his feathers you’ll see lots of pinks, purples, yellows, oranges and other pastel like colors. Even his eye has crazy color. I wanted to make him majestic and vibrant.

I decided to paint this beautiful bird after a morning meditation. The image just came to me in a flash. So I decided for old times sake to get my Medicine Card Deck out to see what “eagle” means in the Native American world. I instantly became inspired to paint the eagle.

The “American Eagle” is now a completely different image and idea than it originally was, and my opinion it is a bit “Hollywood” ish for my taste. I really thought this would be a perfect opportunity to share a different perspective on how powerful the eagle really is.

It was funny, as I was painting this in my LIVE BlogTV show, people made all kids of comments on the “American Eagle” - some jokes, some serious, some irritated. This just proved to me that it is time the Native American meaning should be brought to the table on this one ;) (bare with me this is long... )

According to “Medicine Cards by Sams & Carson” Eagle Medicine is the power of the Great Spirit, the connection to the Divine. It is the ability to live in the realm of spirit, and yet remain connected and balanced within the realm of Earth. Eagle soars, and is quick to observe expansiveness within the overall pattern of life. From the heights of the clouds, Eagle is close to the heavens where the Great Spirit dwells.

The feathers of Eagle are considered to be the most sacred of healing tools. Within the belief systems of Native American tribes, Eagle represents a state of grace achieved through hard work, understanding, and a completion of the tests of initiation which result in the taking of one’s personal power. It is only through the trial of experiencing the lows in life as well as the highs, and through the trial of trusting one’s connection to the Great Spirit that the right to use the essence of Eagle medicine is earned.

Eagle is reminding you to take heart and gather your courage, for the universe is presenting you with an opportunity to soar above the mundane levels of your life. The power of recognizing this opportunity may come in the form of a spiritual test. In being astute, you may recognize the places within your soul, personality, emotions, or psyche that need bolstering or refinement. By looking at the over all tapestry, Eagle teaches you to broaden your sense of self beyond the horizon of what is presently visible.

I think there is much to learn from “Eagle Medicine” especially how times are hard for so many of us right now (including myself). There is a much greater lesson to learn here. My friend Laurie Santos calls it a blesson - a lesson and a blessing at the same time.

This is an oil painting on an 8”x10” canvas. I really applied this in a heavy manner so it may take a few weeks to dry if you plan on purchasing this one.

My husband took one look at it and called it the “Bridges of Madison County” which made me smile. I loved that movie! I know it is a chick flick, but it brings back great memories and the book was a gem too.

The painting reminds me of the fall (winter where I live) which is my favorite season of all. There are tons of colors within this piece and I tried my best to get a good photograph of this one. Of course the color pops when you are looking at it in person.

Buddha Eyes Daily Painting #51 by Gayle Etcheverry

Todays daily painting is of the eyes from a Buddha statue. I created this look by using an old canvas and painting on top of it. A long time ago on this canvas I painted a ballerina that just did not turn out well and painted all over it with various blue colors. Since this is more like a panoramic shot I masked off the background preexisting blue with tape and painted the eyes. You will find accents of gold paint in this too. It complements the blue areas nicely.

Todays painting is of a Monarch butterfly. The canvas is 6"x6" and is painted in oils. I thought it was appropriate to paint a butterfly since the symbol means 'transformation' and we are about to step into 2009! I don't know about you but I am ready for 2009. This has been a good year but I am always so ready to begin a new year and here in California we only have a few hours left.

I found the work of one very talented photographer in Mexico named Fernando Vega and was inspired by one of his pictures (this wine bottle). "Wine Bottle" is an oil painting on a 6"x8" canvas. This was a good example of a painting that my mind was making assumptions on how it should look. This is a painting of a pink rose. It is on a 6”x 6” canvas and is painted in oils. As you can see there is a lot of texture to this painting so it will definitely take a few weeks to dry.

This painting has a ton of color in it. hot pinks, blues, purples, greens.. it is a bit insane but from a distance looks like it is supposed to (or at least I think so). I love flowers and find many different images within the flower.

Todays painting (actually created yesterday, just didn’t get it uploaded in time) is of a slice of cherry pie with ice cream on top and a fork on its side (just waiting for you to take a bite!). For some reason I just want a sweet after looking at this for a while. ;) It is on a 6”x 8” canvas and is painted in oils. As you can see there is a lot of texture to this painting so it will definitely take a few weeks to dry.

Todays painting is of a bowl of peaches. I found this image online at a website called www.roadsidescholar.com the photographers name is Gigi Leonard - LOVE the pictures there. A new friend named Donavan suggested I name the painting "Georgia Peaches" - great idea Donavan, I love it!

Well Christmas is approaching fast. It is really hard to believe it is Dec 22nd. It even feels like winter here in LA with the weather being unusually cold. Even the other day I saw someone scraping ice off of their car windows (the sprinklers went off and the water froze as it dripped down the car!) I understand this is mild compared to what people out East are going through. My heart goes out to you. That snow also reminds me why I moved to LA in the first place - for the sun. ;)

Yes I am back! Its about damn time - I know ;)

this is an Oil Painting on a 6"x8" canvas. I painted a cardinal bird sitting in a sea of snow. I thought it was appropriate since most of us are in some kind of Winter Wonderland. Also the Cardinal says "Christmas" to me....

Today’s painting is of a couple of lemons on a dark brown/purple background. It is an acrylic painting on a 6”x8” canvas. I guess I’m on a bit of a food pattern here. Not intentional at all, just seem to be gravitating to these as my subject matter. Who knows what we’ll see next! Maybe some candy.... ;)

Something exciting coming up for my friend and business partner, Dena and I - we’re going to Vietnam to paint the set for the Miss Universe Pageant! We are so excited! Just bought a travel book to learn all about Vietnam and started to download Vietnamese language podcasts to learn conversational Vietnamese (yes I know I am a geek). We’ll be gone from July 2nd to probably around the 17th. So obviously, there’ll be no paintings during that time, however on my return expect to see lots of Vietnamese influences in upcoming paintings. If you’ve ever been to Vietnam and have any tips or suggestions please send them my way!

Ice Cream Cone Daily Painting #41

This is an acrylic painting on a 6”x6” canvas. The subject is of an ice cream cone, and the flavor is chocolate - YUMMY! I had Pinkberry earlier today, green tea with strawberries (delicious) so I had the frozen desserts on my mind I guess.

This is going to be a quickie on the blog side of the painting. Kind of short on time, so until next time!
