Filmado totalmente na Inglaterra, o argumento é baseado na história da origem de um jogo na Austrália nos idos de 1830, e assim sendo, num território não muito familiar para Hitchcock.<br />A contratação de Ingrid Bergman aumentou extremamente o custo da produção, enquanto ela atuava brilhantemente, a relação entre estrela e diretor era muito tensa, e não concorreu em nada para que a filmagem transcorresse tranquilamente.<br />Apesar do clima pesado, Ingrid com o seu profissionalismo incontestável, teve uma atuação perfeita e merecidamente reconhecida pela crítica.
