Mixing colours is a fun lesson.. Well at least I thought so. Here are some tips I learnt during my course. The colour wheel was my first lesion and I found it suppa fun yaeee :). You can paint well with out learning the colour wheel but it dose save some time with trial and error part of it.
My task for you is to make a colour wheel using acrylic or water colour. I like using the water colour for this task.

                                             Warm and cold colours
Colour are ether warm or cold. It much easier than some let on. Cold colours like Blue, purple and green warm colours are red, yellows and orange.. Warm and cool colours can highlight each other example A red blossoming in a green field with green tree`s in its back ground. The red tree will be brought froward due to its warm colour in front of the cool colour or a red apple in front of green grapes. Another great highlighting idea is Complementary Colours, These are colours that are on the opposite sides of the wheel chart example blue and orange, red and green or yellow and Violet.
The power of tone
Tone refers to the darkness or lightness of a colour it is important as it can make a big difference in your work. It shows where the light hit or shading begins. Its helps complete the illusion. Light blue for a beautiful sunny day to dark blue making night n cold. Or the sky be lighter than the green trees below as the sky is the sauce of light .. Always start with the lighter tone as dark can go over light no not the opposite.

Basic rules of reflection
Reflection can be broken into two categories perfect and imperfect. Perfect refection surfaces do not have a local colour where imperfect colours do. To better understand reflection is to observe it. Go to river with your paint gear and see what you can do. Start by looking over there preferably from a bridge, see your shadow blocking the sun light ? that's the local colour in reflection.
The face can say everything about a person without him/her speaking a word. Whether its a smile, a sharp stern look, pout or a raised eye brow. A picture of someone smiling or frowning usually involves an emphasis on the shape of the mouth whether it is upwards or downwards curve. Though I'm not bothered with such extremes some artiest find it useful to study what lies beneath the surface. The human head structure`s movement is the relates of muscles pulling across the face in many directions with each movement affecting different parts of the face. Capturing the elasticity of the animated face is not easy and only done by few that we know of.

Eyes:
In a way eyes are the mirrors to our sole. So it said, Our eyes convey our mood far more than any other facial feature.
When we are starting out its easy to make many mistakes such as the crazed glanced stare or so it would seem. by making toe top shape of the eye the exact same as the bottom.
Just remember the top eye lid is more flatter then the bottom. I like to continue practising each feature of the face. Its a mater of practise practise practise.

Child's eyes:
Children eyes are larger and rounder than that of an adult. Also bigger in proportion to the face. When painting the eyes I like to fill in the area in with flesh tone and detail the eye at the end I do the same with the mouth.

Mouth:
I find the mouth very tricky to paint but not impossible in the end I always get something OK or even good :p . Despite its infinite range of expressions persistence and practise pays of. Try starting with the outta line and then filling it in shape the mouth with strokes and shading in the flat areas that face away from the light.

Nose:
In drawing the nose we must observe the shadows and the shapes of it. Try not to think to linear. Concentrate on the shadows that highlight the features of the nose and define it. Use a mixture of shading, strokes and a few lines.

Ears:
I have always had fun drawing/painting the ears despite the odd shape. Practise drawing the ears from different angles and with a mixture of materials.. Remember use a mixture of shading strokes and lines.

Capturing the hair:
How can one paint hair without it appearing as a bad wig. 1 don't over state it. 2 paint it loosely and 3 keep it as simple as possible. Start with the wide Masses gradually working to the finer details. Practise drawing each style of hair.

Hands:
I use to shy away from drawing hands I found them overwhelming and quite tricky. But with Patience and practise it comes more easier . Practise practise practise. Practise drawing the hands in every way. Example holding a cup, thumb up, flat palm or scratching . Learn about the hands movements to help understand the way it will appear.

The body:
I find a completing in the painting when I add the body. Some painter don't bother them self with the body when painting portraits. I like how it gives the hole story. i find studying the skeleton structure can help in the start but over all Practise practise practise.

Skin tones:
Finding the right formula for skin tone can be tricky as there are many variations and formals. I recommend against using premixed skin colours as the colour is just wrong and far too bright. Try mixing colours like:
Yellow ochre + Madder lake + a touch of Cobalt blue
Garbage + Burnt sienna
Yellow ochre + Madder lake.
Mix and play with the colour`s til your happy with the results.

Fabrics:
Drawing fabrics wether it is clothing, blanket or a curtain in the back ground adds a little more caritore to your art work. Wether your painting or drawing add the folds and creases in the fabric can seem daunting but its much more simple than it appears. Start by sketching the main folds loosely with only doing the main areas and the folds and shading the stronger lines to define the folds.
A basic guide

I love painting with oil for me it is the best. The texture you can create with the paint. I just love it.

Materials:
Its basically similar to Water painting with its differences. With its large range of materials being some what confusing for some and mostly the beginner.

Brushes:
Brushes can be a daunting area with such a wide range to chose from, such as sable/synthetic, plain/synthetic, which is the more affordable option. Pure/sable which is less affordable but is my favourite due to its soft texture. I recommend using a mixture of all three depending on the job at hand.
There are flat brushes and round. Bigger the area to fill bigger the brush. Round brushes are good for fine detail. I recommend buying at least one of each size preferably two.

Paints:
Oils closures like watercolour are available in two levels: student and artists.e It can be purchased as a set. Artist quality`s how ever can only be brought as single colour`s with the price depending on the colour. I use a mixture of both quality.
I recommend you add white acrylic to your collection as it offers a great deal of opacity which is ideal for highlighting.

Pencils and sharpener:
Pencils shades: H(Hard) HB(Medium Hard) B(Soft) I all so recommend getting artist quality water colour pencils as they are good for adding fine detail in different texture once the paint is dry.
Keep pencils well sharpened.

Eraser:
Putty eraser`s wont damage your paper like ordinary ones.

Linseed oil: Used as a binder

Turpentine:

This is used for thinning out oil based paints

An old jar:

To clean paint brushes in. Filled with a bit of linseed oil.

Pallet:

From all good art stores.

Oil sketch pad or canvas: Oil sketch pads are specially made canvas textural paper for application of oil and acrylic paints

Cloth:

For easy wiping of your paint brushes. Can be and old rag or tea towel. What ever your happy with using.

Easel: From any good art store.

QUICK GUIDE:

Plan your painting before anything ells.

Next step:

After sketching drawing onto canvas I paint in the basics of the face.

I then paint in the shirt and start filling in the hair.

Add final details and touches..

And leave to dry.

I love sketching. Its a great stress relief for me. I find it nice and simple. I mostly sketch and drew be for I discovered painting. Well be before I had the confidants and knowledge to paint.

Materials:
The range of materials can be confusing, especially for the beginners. But much more simple than with painting. Here is a simple guide.

Sketch pad:

Starter packs are great.

There are many you can chose from best brought from your local art shop.

Pencils and sharpener:
Pencils shades: H(Hard) HB(Medium Hard) B(Soft) I all so recommend getting artist quality water colour pencils as they are good for adding fine detail in different texture once the paint is dry.
Keep pencils well sharpened.

Putty eraser:
Putty eraser`s wont damage your paper like ordinary ones.

Board:
This is one of my favourite items although they can be Farley expensive they are most defiantly worth it. They come complete with a parallel motion which I find very use full for squaring up your work. If this is out of your reach another option is: Medium density fibreboard around 650 x 480 mm.

                 BASIC SKETCH OF AN APPLE

Step 2: add the outta shape of the apple your sketching.

Step 1: Start with a basic circle

Then rubbing away the part of the circle you don`t need

Step 3: Add stem.

Add marks and details

Here I tidy up the shadow, detailed the stem and out lined the apple for my final product.

A basic guide to water colour painting.

   Materials

The range of materials can be confusing. Especially for the beginner. Here is a simple guide:

Brushes: Brushes can be a daunting area with such a wide range to chose from, such as sable/synthetic, mix plain synthetic which is the more affordable option to pure sable which are less affordable but the best and all so my favourite due to its soft texture. I use a mixture depending on the job at hand. There are flat used for filling in spaces and the round brush for fine detail. Ranging in a variety of sizes depending on the size of the space/detail.

Water colouer paint pan

Paints: Water colour es like oils are available in two levels: student and artist. And also available in tow formats tube and pans. Tubes are best for the beginner which can be purchased as a set (beginners set) Which I still buy and use along side my artist quality.

Gouache: Gouache is ideal for highlighting.

Paper: I recommend only use water colour paper as it wont wear away as you paint. It comes in a various thickness from all good art stores.

Water pot: I recommend pre-used jar`s or an old glass.

Palette: You Can find these at all good stores.

Pad: For the original copy

Tracing pad: Comes in various sizes

Watercolour pad: Comes in various sizes. Found in all good art stores.

Pencils and sharpeners: Pencils come in various shades: H (Hard) HB (Medium) B (Soft) . Always keep you pencils well sharpened. I also so buy a range of artist quality colours whether they are water colour`s or other quality. I use them for adding detail latter.

Eraser: Putty eraser are usually recommended but I say if you don't rub out alot it doesn't matter. How ever if you tend to use the rubber a fare bit then putty eraser is the way to go.

Cloth: For easy wiping/cleaning of paint brushes. It can be an old rag or a tea towel.

Burnisher: Rub the burnisher over the back of the tracing paper to transfer the drawing to the water colour paper.

Board. This is one of my favourite items although they can be costly but worth it. They often come complete with a parallel motion which I find useful for squaring up my work. I this is out of you reach other options are available.
One option is to buy an easel. example in picture below. Or Medium density fibreboard around 650x480 mm.

...............................................................................................................................................

STEP BY STEP GUIDE .

Step one: Plan and prepare your painting.

The powerful ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria, 106 miles southeast of Ife. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendour in the 15th and 16th century. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the oba (king). The “Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the oba, and has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897, when the palace was sacked by the English in reprisal for an ambush that had cost the British vice-consul his life.

Art in Egypt was mainly made to impress Kings and so called Gods with there expressions which complied with rules called canons. Sculptures where made in work shops rather then by individuals and due to that art expressed that of there time opposed to that of an individual. Those arts where not made for the public but where for a restricted circle of people or for the artist himself. Another art is pottery the crafting of bowls and vases. As well as being efficient, base on form nature objects where decorated in order to fit in with it surroundings transporting there everyday lives in the objects they made a process that lasted hundreds of years.
