Art is...You

Jodi Ohl says that Art is…You is Empowering!

2012-09-08T03:00:00.000-07:00

As an instructor, I'm looking forward to my second year teaching at Art Is...You.

There are very few places out there that one can go to and feel EMPOWERED to be 150% who you are and do so in the most creative sense.

From the moment you even register for the event, whether its months in advance or the day of, you are ENGAGED by everyone and you immediately feel a part of a community.

There is ENCOURAGEMENT every step of the way , it is similar to having your own set of cheerleaders there for you and wanting you to feel comfortable, feel inspired, and be a part of the community right from the get go.

As a relatively new teacher, I felt EMPOWERED by having been given my first opportunity to teach at a large retreat, simply because Sal and Ellen believed in me, and for that I am ETERNALLY grateful.

Most of all....one cannot help but to feel EMBRACED once becoming part of the Art Is...You family. That is a true gift and not found in all art retreats, but you can be guaranteed it can be found here.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for inspiring so many and for such an ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE....it is a true experience.

Sincerely,
Jodi Ohl

Lynne has some Simply Pretty Stuff to say about Art is…You

2012-09-05T03:00:00.000-07:00

As an attendee, for me it was a chance to become refreshed, like a sponge in water....and what wonderful shapes and colors a sponge can have when it is full.

Why I wished to teach at Art Is.... was because of the immediate kinship, hearty laughing without uncertainty, and, if you needed it, a mentor's hand and out stretched arms that would forever be there no matter where you both called home.

That gave me great promise as an instructor... to be counted among such kind and talented artists, and to share their dedication and celebration of art. xo,

Art is…teaching and learning

2012-09-02T03:00:00.000-07:00

I've been to several retreats before attending ART IS You and the difference is the family…it's a great one!

They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and I want to be a part of this very special tree! Be it teaching or learning - which for me are synonymous!

BZ has the Buzz about Art is…You

2012-08-29T03:00:00.000-07:00

What calls me back each year to Art is You?

A warm, fun loving & caring "family" of people like me.

From the moment you arrive, you hear squeals of delight in old friends hugging & greeting each other.

Morning special get togethers to get your muse dancing with imagination.

Evening social activities that get you to mingle with new friends & laugh.

Not to mention the reason you signed up in the first place!

Exceptional instructors with fabulous techniques!

As I learned, this "pj party" of warmth, love & laughter does NOT happen at other retreats!

There is magic at Art Is...You.

2012-08-26T03:00:00.001-07:00

And not just the magical art that is happening around every corner, in every nook and cranny, generously offered by kind and welcoming teachers.

But there is magic in the love and humor and fellowship that greets you from the very first moment you walk into the retreat.

You'll wear a smile for days on end.

You'll laugh like you never have before.

You'll form new and everlasting friendships.

You will be so inspired that the feeling will remain with you forever.

Whether your fist time attending or if you've been before, you will know that you've come "home."

Dawn Gold has something to say about Art is…You

2012-08-26T03:00:00.000-07:00

I came across Art Is You as I travelled around Blogland.

I was looking for a retreat to attend for my special Birthday and every time I read about Art Is You I got such a good vibe.

So I signed up and before I even landed in the States I felt part of the family by way of the Yahoo group.

To say that it met my expectations and more is an understatement, from the off it was apparent that this was a special retreat, people were so welcoming, never once did I feel alone, in fact I felt like I had come home.

Let me tell you there is nothing like it, friendships are made that last long after the event. The teachers put so much care and attention in to the classes they are giving, everything is geared up to ensure the attendees get the most out of the workshops.

Sallianne and Ellen are there, making sure everyone and everything is perfect.

My biggest regret is not being able to attend this year, but hey next year nothing will keep me away!

Going back to the friendships, I need to sort out a wedding outfit as I have a wedding to attend next year for one of the girls I met there, who would have thought it.

So I would say if you have to cross oceans, jump on a train or just walk, get yourself to Art is You for the experience of a lifetime, you won't just go once you will want to make it an annual event.

We love you Dawn…you touched the hearts of everyone in your midst … that is what Art is…

"Last year was my very first Art Is You experience in Petaluma. I am so eager to return this year not only as a student but also as an instructor.

After spending five days at Art Is You last year and experiencing the loving details that Sallianne and Ellen so graciously bestow upon everyone, I knew I wanted to be part of it in some way.

From the hand-crafted name tags, scrumptious meals and treats, venue selection, special programs, community interaction and outreach, Art Trunk, great instructors and classes, fun dress-up themes, art swaps, ........I could go on and on.....it was clear to me that these ladies know how to make people feel special and are focused on creating a very nurturing, creative experience for all in attendance.

I so look forward to being part of this year's Art Is You. I have been to several art retreats all over the united states, both large and small, and Art Is You, by far, is one of my favorites. "

Imagine yourself in a castle in the sky
Where polka dot rabbits know how to fly
You can be anywhere you want to be
Your imagination will set you free

Imagine!
A special place
Imagine!
Flying through space

Imagine this
Imagine that
Imagine you're a dragon or a kooky cat

Imagine you're the singer in a rock n' roll band
Imagine you're a knight in a far off land
Imagine you're a fish in the deep blue sea
Or a bird at the top of a giant tree

Imagine!
Flying a plane
Imagine!
Driving a train
Imagine here
Imagine there
Imagine you're a monster with crazy hair

Imagine yourself as a tiny ant
Or in the forest as a rubber plant
Imagine you're a horse that knows how to ski
Or flying on the back of a buzzy bee

You can go anywhere you want to go
You can meet anyone you want to know
You can be anything you want to be

Karen O’Brien is a doll…face!

2012-08-15T03:00:00.000-07:00

I found out about Art Is You through my good friend/artist and instructor, Laurie Mika.

I have taught many workshops and know that teachers do not return to or recommend events if they are not fun, in a great location and well organized.

Art-Is-You seems to fit the bill. I am very excited to be teaching ("Doll Face" on Friday Eve), vending and attending as a student. I hope to meet lots of new creatives and find all of you who, like me, selected "weird" to describe yourself!

Art is…”simply a warm cloud”…

2012-08-08T03:00:00.000-07:00

Hello Sal and Ellen,

This is a time when I wish I was a toastmaster to enrich and really make my words grab anyone who reads this. But, I am not, so I will go with my feelings, which usually is a good thing.

I have been to many many art retreats (Art and Soul, ArtFest, An Artful Journey, enough to have put myself through art school!) So I can validate what I have to say about my Petaluma experience and what truly placed that experience at the top of the ladder. And I don't think I can say it was any one thing or person, it was simply a warm cloud I walked around in everywhere we were, in class, at meals, in the bar and lobby, just passing by at the pool (I remember almost running into Sal who vented a minor frustration and it was enough to make us laugh...no downer feelings ever coming from either of you).

For the easy stuff, the hotel was fab, location location location. Rooms for classes with lots of natural light and relaxing views; who doesn't love a harbor and dream of sailing out on to the ocean. Fresh air and great food and a very pleasant and accommodating hotel staff. Close to town, and Petaluma has something for everyone and is a charming California treat. I could drive, so of course that is always a plus.

Teachers, well, what a cool group of Artists sharing with us and having as much fun as we were; variety, attentive, productive. When they participated in the panel, wow, that was awesome, they genuinely shared themselves and it just made us all even closer. Because that is what we come for right, to learn and feel the creativity they have to give to us. To get to know these incredibly gifted and courageous Artists.

And having that upstairs rooms to always go to and meet someone new that you had so much in common with! Did I forget to mention the fun we had with the activities you planned for us because everyday just kept getting better, crazy great.

So maybe it was you 2 that made the biggest difference. The way you do business, always pleasant (sometimes hilarious) and profession. The care you show by being there with us, and for us, and for the Artists/Teachers. You support what's going on, you are approachable and just darn lovable!

Art On! See you soon,

Anne C., California

I went by myself to Art is...YOU. A scaredy cat to be sure. I was blown away by the friendliness of everyone there. You could just sit down at a table and enter a conversation with people you didn't know yet somehow they felt like family....warm, welcoming and sincere. The energy in the workshop was crazy....alive, vibrant, fun loving and inspiring. You don't have to be picasso to enjoy yourself. Just bring who you are....you're gonna be amazed at how filled up on the inside you become. It's like a jump start for your heart and out of that your creativity will flow. Trust me. Hope to see YOU next year...there's a whole lot of family who want to meet you!

…unless you spend time with JoAnnA Pierotti and then you want to make sure that you are covered in the goodness of creativity that our JoAnnA shares so freely.

JoAnnA Pierotti of Moss Hill Studios has been a part of our Art is…You Family since the beginning.

In fact she was the first artist that said “yes” when asked to teach at our inaugural event in Connecticut and that comment was quickly couched with the comment – oh but I have never done this before!!

Ellen and Sallianne both said … “and the problem with that is…?”

That year we traveled an emotional road with Jo as she hit one of life’s largest obstacles – Breast Cancer. In fact her fight with this terrible disease was the impetus for us to include fundraising as a significant part of our retreat and today it is known as “Living in Generosity” and we celebrate Pink Friday.

In 2012 we have over 200 committed donations to our events in both Petaluma and Stamford.

If you have never taken a class with JoAnnA, we encourage you to do so. Many artists come back year after year to take a workshop with her because it is not just about the workshop, it is about the experience.

Jo is teaching on both coasts this year, and there is a spot for you.

Australian Artist Greta Young reflects on what Art means to her…

2012-07-22T07:54:00.000-07:00

Art is.......

Art is my escape from a sometimes, very stressful work life. Making art is a way to make my heart sing. That wonderful feeling when you create something that meets or exceeds your expectations. The marrying of colour and texture! I LOVE colour..... and I love putting colours together which “work”. If I am lacking in mojo, I just gather together elements and colours which make me feel good inside and make me want to create something!

I thank Julie Cadd (van Oosten) from Collections Elements for teaching me to appreciate vintage style... putting together old images, bits of fabric and rustic elements, aging them to create something that looks like it came from early last century. Things that once, I wouldn’t have given a second glance to, now have a new meaning for me. Her never ending creative talents have inspired many paper lovers. My good friend Jenny Crossley whose work I admire and adore. When you look at it, her (papecraft) designs aren’t intricate, but they are always well balanced, and amazingly beautiful.

I have art to thank for the many friendships I have made with fellow crafters. There is nothing like a day out with my crafty friends, “junking” or spending the day shopping for goodies at paper craft stores! No alcohol required to have a good time here! Spending the day creating with a group of friends or even people you have just met, is a wonderful way to pass a day. The sharing of ideas, techniques and even supplies!

So art to me is taking a bunch of individual items and putting them together to create something pleasing to my eye, about taking the time to create a card or a present for someone dear to my heart. Creating “Art” is an important part of my life and I hope that I can continue to make art until the end of my days!

Art Is...You has changed my life in so many ways.

2012-07-20T09:22:00.000-07:00

I have grown as an artist and branched out into so many mediums that I never would have tried before. I started out as a quilter so the world of mixed media and ephemera were things I had never heard of.

My first class was a doll with a beaded face class. I felt so welcomed by the teacher and students that I couldn't wait for year 2.

I took metal and soldering and altering board books and band-aid boxes, and no one told me my pages were lumpy or crooked, they said they were beautiful and they meant it.

I learned that I really did miss fabric after a fabric journal class, using luscious laces and velvets and silks substituted for the quilters cottons. Now I still work with the other mediums but my first love fabric is always present.

I also have grown as a person, learning that people will love me for me, I can be myself now that i have found who I want to be.

We laugh, cry, hope, learn and support each other.

The genuine friendships I have developed between students and teachers will last a lifetime.

I am SO PROUD to call Art Is...You family.

Sallianne and Ellen should be very proud of their family.

A Word from a Jersey Girl

2012-07-10T07:12:00.001-07:00

Art-Is-You - Growing, Friendship, and Family.

I am a Jersey girl with many friends, none of which were like minded. I was debating on going to Art-is-You. I got on the message boards (lurking in the background of coarse), and noticed there was a fellow Jersey girl going also.

So after much encouragement and gentle nudging from Sallianne and Ellen, they managed to convince me, yes I could come on my own. I could do it! So I decided to go hunt down the Jersey girl and say hello Kecia Deveney. We agreed to meet up at AIY.

Still with butterflies in my stomach, I went alone. I was only in the hotel 5 minutes, ran into Kecia. We decided to dump our individual rooms and share. The rest there is history...we've been 2 peas in a pod ever since. How cool is that?! (Editor’s Note: Third Pea is Taryn Reece!)

My first class was with The very talented JoAnnA Pierotti...WOW. Who would have ever known that we would become soul sisters. (Editor’s note: I believe this was after workshops but before the bar…Annie Hesse, Kecia Deveney, Jane Blanco, Carol Mania, Di Russell Horn and JoAnnA!)

So from the beginning talking about not having like-minded people around me.......at AIY they are everywhere letting you be free to be you and surrounding you with love, sharing creativity, and laughter.

(Editor’s Note: Jane and Kecia cheated)

The bottom line is.......it's the place to BE!!!!!!!!!

xoxo,

Jane Blanco

Sacramento Artist Margaret Sarantis shares what Art is…to her

2012-07-02T08:08:00.001-07:00

Art is the time and place when you let your imagination fly. It's when you are so completely entranced in your work that you are able to let go of any inhibitions, restrictions or self-criticism.

Art happens when the piece you're working on takes over. Time passes unmarked. Your creation flows from your hands as if they're guided by an outside force but it's really an inner force that is suppressed and ignored most of the time. Making art is like when you were a kid and you played and played outside until your mom had to call you in from the dark --and you didn't even realize it was dark!

Art happens when you can sit in a class for eight hours, through lunch, so focused on your project that you're surprised to hear the class is ending in fifteen minutes. I know I've created a great piece of art when I am so excited by it that I want to take it to my book club, or my lunch date or my son's classroom just for the opportunity to show it to anyone who will look.

Art is the physical expression of my soul on display so others can see it and, hopefully, connect with it.

The photos I've included are of a sketchbook I created in Michael DeMeng's "Cold Blooded Journal" class that I took at Art Is You Petaluma in 2011.

2012-06-28T07:40:00.001-07:00

The 2011 inaugural Petaluma ART IS YOU was my very first art retreat. I can remember the day I stumbled across Jenny Holiday's blog post about an East coast art retreat that she would be teaching at. I followed her link and was disappointed to see how far away the retreat was from my home. That is when I noticed a link to the brand new ART IS YOU West Coast retreat! I crossed my fingers and hoped that it would be a bit closer to home. Little did I know it would be in my own backyard! I LIVE in Petaluma!!! I could not sign up fast enough!

I was so impressed with the warmth and sense of community that I felt from Sallianne and Ellen. Not only was there a wonderfully diversity of classes to choose from but I also appreciated the special events as well. Especially the fact that Sallianne and Ellen looked for ways to give back to the community. When art meets generosity, good things happen!!! I loved my classes and getting to know like-minded people from near and far. I learned new skills and tried art techniques that I never thought I would be able to do. A thank you from Lesley

2012-06-27T07:38:00.001-07:00

How do you say thank you to someone for ............

Giving you the gift of friendship or
Hugging you like they love you because they do or
For encouraging every part of your creative journey because they are there with you every step of the way or
For accepting you just as you are where you are or
Choosing to spend their creative time with you when they have so many wonderful choices in front of them or
For their believing so much in your art and your ability that they want to help you progress farther or
For just stopping by to visit either in the classroom or at vendor night or when you are just too pooped to go any further and you are relaxing on one of the nicely provided sofas or
For loving your angels as much as you do because of their background and the love put into them or
For their generous and sharing spirits or, mostly,
For every kindness and encouragement, and tear and smile given freely and happily for the propping up and helping out and the memories that I can't figure out how to repay (if that is even possible)?

All I can say is thank you to my Art Is family, each and every one of you, your smiles and excitement and creations and laughter are like some sort of artistic helium that encourages me to go higher and higher. I love you all (in the South we would say ya'll or all ya'll) and cannot wait to see you next year and the year after that and so on.
Merci Beaucoup my family & friends.
