Wow, it's 2009!

Hello to all readers of this blog...

I took an unexpected journey last August that left me away from art and detoured my direction in life about 189 degrees. It's really true that you can't plan life, it does just happen while you're busy making plans.

My husband had a very serious motorcycle accident and spent a long time in the hospital and recovery. I'm very grateful to know that we have an incredible network of support and true friends and family. I'm very grateful that he is alive and recovering his life. I'm still sorting out the total impact that this event has on us/will have on us. I have only finished one painting during this period of 7 months, I have a lot of creativity to let go of!

I am ramping up to begin a production cycle for 2009. That's the good news that I'm here to share with you today!

Art Show and Sale April 11 from 9-6pm. @ The Home and Garden Expo Center - Scottsdale, AZ. The Home and Garden Expo is located at 13802 N Scottsdale Rd, Suite 142, Scottsdale AZ, 85254-corner of Thunderbird and Scottsdale Rd. The Expo Center is open Monday-Saturday 9am -6pm. It was a really good time at Art Detour being at the Garfield Galleria, I saw a lot of friends and artists that I missed and didn't expect to see!! What fun! I met some new folks too, I hope to see you again at the local shows.

Over all I've given myself the green light to go forward and paint if for no other reason than it's what I do and it makes people feel good when they look at my work and it makes me feel good to get let it come out of my hands!

Art is an investment that never fails. Buy art from a living artist!

Control and Chaos

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to post a couple of new paintings and some finished ones. I didn't get the cat lady finished as I had planned but one can't rush this process so hopefully in Sept.!

I finished Control and Chaos and to my delight it came out really well! Also... I put the finishing touches on the TRIO, wine bottle with two glasses, being sold all together. These are all hanging at Over Coffee in Surprise AZ until Sept. 1

Via Colori®, The Street Painting Festival comes to Scottsdale Arizona!

I've been slowing painting the bottle in blocking layers, and it's going quite well! I really like this one. I was given the idea, by my husband, to paint two accompaning pieces both 11x14, so I began and they are coming out as glasses so far... so this will be sold as a "set of three" paintings - title yet to come forth...

Yes, you may have guessed that it was about time for some new coffee cups, two more have their blocking layers down and are well on their way to being born, the first is titled Sun Flower Cup, inspired by my lovely sunflowers that peek into the window where I work and the second is titled TO GO, I'm using a drab color pallet and white cup to represent how everything kind of blurs together when you're in a hurry and everything is TO GO... if you're interested in purchasing any of these paintings please email. They will be hanging locally as soon as the paint is dry!

I am starting on two new paintings this week, one is inspired by a phrase that my friend Shay said, it was catchy and I got this visual so I'm painting it out... it's a fun painting to work on, it's a surrealistic depiction of an older woman who has let her hair go to the cats...

::Crazy Hair, Cat Lady:: or Cat Lady with Crazy Hair- - it's going to be a mixed media masterpiece! I am finding things to use in the painting so I know I'm on the right path here with this one... when I get it to a place of origin, where I can begin to talk about the process of how it's becoming, I'll take a photo, until then... just imagine it!

The other is a wine bottle, I don't have the title for it yet, it's Untitled for now... the client who commissioned One Bitchin' Kitchen asked if I had ever painted a wine bottle and while I had not - I have thought about doing so. We have a collection of fantastic wine bottles (all empty!!) from our time living in Germany so I picked my favorite one and am in the compsition stage of laying it out and blocking in the first layers of paint. Another painting that I will be finishing this week is Green Gal, she's been on and off my easel for just about two years - first appearance was in June 2006 - she was born in my studio in downtown Phoenix. Here is the latest and in my opinion best incarnation so far... finished piece will be published on FAR w/price later this week.

The final steps were to paint in the coffee and swirls, touch up the details one last time, adding a few more shadows... I finished it with polycrylic spray, which makes for a semi-gloss finish.

It looks really nice hanging in the client's kitchen and I'm happy to have been given the opportunity to work on such a fun project.

After doing several blocking layers, I un-frisketed (is that a word?) the lettering and took a very fine brush with glossy black acrylic to fill in the lettering... that took two or three times going over the letters to get them all the way finished. I also began to fill in the "coffee"... this is always a process of getting the right tone of brown.. I used the blue and orange of the yin/yang opposite for each coffee cup to give the painting balance.

The next thing I did was uncover the masked logo and paint in the details of the yin/yang - I used the original tattoo flash that the client provided as a visual guide and did the painting freehand.

In my last post I will show the entire piece finished.... this was a fun project. I hope you enjoyed watching its birth.

This project is now finished and I'll be delivering it to the client on Wednesday but for now we are on Layout and Composition...

I had rendered an example in Photoshop of what the painting would look like for compositional purposes... it's a bit of text, a couple of coffee cups and a personal logo which is a yin/yang symbol that represents Michigan and Arizona.

I used some frisket to block out the lettering and logo and get the centering and arch in place...

I added some blocking layers of paint to the project next...

Traveling through something - PART TWO - FINAL CHAPTER!!!!

Second trip to Los Angeles was very interesting, the drive over was slowed by a flat tire but that really was only an annoyance compared with the wreckage we saw along the way. Cars and trucks on fire on I-10 - a crazy woman going the wrong way on 110... I had just finished reading the Tibetan Book of the Dead so death and the moment before death were on my mind - may be too much... lol

We did manage to get to the gallery early and pick up the art, I was happy to see it all and feel as if it's gained some valuable energy. I haven't unpacked it yet because I am fairly certain that it will be going somewhere else in May...

Our reservation this time was a TLF (temporary living facility) in San Pedro, which is along the coast - it's an Air Force facility, we were expecting a little more than a room but ended up having a whole house w/three bedrooms, appliances, etc. It was nice!

Someone decided to test out the moment before death, death and after death while we slept, a person jumped from one of the cliffs into the ocean, so we woke to all kinds of sirens and helicopters - not to mention the area being sealed off - whoohoooooo!

Having Tim along on the trip, Ironman was really dominant - I'm not sure how this is going to change my life after this movie comes out? For now, it's pretty much everywhere you look...

OK, so this post will be the first in series of posts about a commission that I'm working on.

It is a 10 inch by 60 inch canvas wrapped gallery style (2 inches deep) that will be hanging in a unique wall space in my client's kitchen.

I'm incorporating the coffee cup theme as well as his personal logo (which is a yin yang symbol representing Arizona and Michigan, his two homes) - I'll be stepping out the process as I go but wanted to start with an intro post.

Traveling Through Something...part one.

This post will begin a series of posts about working, as a self-representing artist.

The last week of February was full of prepping art to leave for various shows, by the end of the week I had hung 30+ pieces of art around Phoenix. I accomplished some press releases and marketing but most of the marketing will take place during the events themselves as they're all basically a month in length. Art Detour and First Fridays kicks things off here at home, followed by an outdoor festival, etc.

March 13 and the 27th are big days at the Infusion Gallery in Los Angeles, there are two opening receptions this month - the later one being for the Raw Arts Festival which is the show my art is participating in. the first date March 13 is their regular Art Walk second Thursdays. I have to say it's a very similar vibe to our downtown art walk only on a much larger / more populated scale with the Walt Disney Corp being one of the downtown art walk sponsors it's obvious they have a bit more of the mainstream behind them than we have here in Phoenix. We walked around and visited a few of the galleries that were open in the daytime. Great people and flavorful art, I recommend a trip to Gallery Row if you are ever in Los Angeles.

We left Phoenix on Friday, February 28th, early in the morning - Sarah and I drove towards Los Angeles, California with 10 pieces of art some clothes, water and a map!

We were greeted with a set of buildings named Cornell, and many other buildings!

The place we stayed was on Wilshire just three miles from the gallery, to Sarah's delight there was a strong Asian/Japanese presence in the neighborhood so of course we had ramen and sushi for dinner!

I have never been in such a densely populated city, I felt really condensed energetically while I was in LA. I'm amazed at the way it all works and found myself slowing down the more everything around me sped up - not always a good thing to do! I had a hard time becoming an observer - to take photos, etc. It's just very distracting with all that activity going on and I'm easily distracted as is.

Sarah loved it for the most part, she has been to New York City and all over the US during her three week bus trip so this city was small potatoes to her. She wanted to go see Universal Studios - so after hanging the art at Infusion on Saturday morning...

We drove over to Universal Studios and spent the rest of the afternoon there - where I was overloaded with TOO MUCH...noise, food, entertainment.

Naturally, Sarah loved it! She was right at home...

We had a good drive out and back, the wind was really strong through the desert on the way home but other than that flawless driving - thanks to the traffic faries!

Hi and welcome to my new blog...

I created this blog specifically for a record of my travels and to promote new and interesting art commissions and projects that are upcoming over the next several months... there should be ample interesting things to write and show here!

I'd like to begin with the most recent coffee cup I've finished, this is called Get Around It - it is like the others, 12 inches by 12 inches gallery wrapped and is hanging at Juniper House through end of February. The original will go to the Willo in March unless it sells... in any case, I've made unlimited prints available of all of the popular cups at reasonable prices from Fine Art America's secure shopping area.
