What is Art Mining?

This blog is the result of a compulsive and entertaining task I called “art mining”. In the absence of a better definition, I would say that it is born of my encounter with creative works on the Internet (websites, blogs, Youtube, Flickr and others). I collect, store and accumulate them in an anarchic and near-obsessive way. Artworks that for some reason I want to share with other people and that help me understand what is art for me, without further explanations or definitions, simply through the enjoyment of quality and diversity.

This is a task of exploration, gathering and selection that I feel absolutely personal. This is the manner of acting of someone who collects clippings and pastes them in folders or stores them in boxes in a drive to review and classify them, but never finishes doing so.

I have no great knowledge about art and certainly I will commit many errors. But this blog is a tool for learning. Perhaps you can help me overcome my limitations and correct the conceptual errors.

Art Mining is a place for friends. Many times I find extraordinary works on the Internet, and I decide to share them with people with whom I like to talk about art and creativity. In such cases I publish those works on my personal blog or I send my discovery by e-mail. This space has been created to broaden and deepen these relations. So, if you become a follower of this blog, don´t be shy, leave comments, write me an e-mail, get in touch with the artists, invite us to know your work.

How Art Mining works?

Every week I publish a selection of three works found on the Internet, gathered under a common topic and accompanied by some comments about the set or about each of the works.

The categories or topics I use can be the commonly accepted by the official language (painting, video-art, street-art, drawing, collage, photography). But the most interesting approach is to use the tags or labels with which these works are classified collectively on the Internet, which results in arbitrary or invented art categories such as "portraits of dogs", "artistic pots," "pins "," black and white ", etc. Of course, I do not refrain from inventing and using my own tags.

There is no curatorial criteria nor technical or professional principles that can explain why I choose a work and not other. Each selection is unique, absolute; there are no rankings nor priorities. It just comes from a necessity.

About the artists

The authors of the works are artists whose works can be seen at various sites on the Internet. There may be presented works of artists who have recently began their careers as well as works of acclaimed creators. The idea is to show the creativity of all times, places and genres, taking advantage of the tools that the Internet brings us.

About copyright

Preferably, I publish works under a Creative Commons license. That is, they can be distributed, copied and exhibited by anyone showing the credits. As for the publication of copyrighted works, whenever it´s possible, I ask for the express consent of authors.

¿Qué es Art Mining?

Este blog es el producto de una compulsiva y entretenida tarea a la que he llamado “art mining”. A falta de una mejor definición, diré que deriva de mis encuentros con obras y trabajos creativos en Internet (en sitios web, blogs, youtube, flickr y otros), que voy recolectando, guardando y acumulando de forma anárquica y casi obsesiva. Trabajos que, por algún motivo, deseo compartir con otros y que me ayudan a entender qué es el arte para mi, sin mayores explicaciones ni definiciones, simplemente a través del disfrute de la calidad y la diversidad.

Se trata de una tarea de exploración, recopilación y selección que considero absolutamente personal. Se trata de la conducta de quien colecciona recortes y los pega en carpetas o los guarda en cajas para sentarse una tarde a revisarlos y clasificarlos pero nunca termina de hacerlo.

No tengo grandes conocimientos sobre arte y seguramente cometeré muchos errores. Pero este blog es una herramienta para aprender. Quizás ustedes puedan ayudarme a superar mis limitaciones y enmendar los errores conceptuales.

Art Mining es un espacio para amigos. Muchas veces me encuentro en Internet con trabajos extraordinarios y decido compartirlos con la gente con la que me gusta hablar de arte y creatividad. Entonces publico algo en mi blog personal o envío mi hallazgo por mail. Este espacio fue creado para ampliar y profundizar esas relaciones. Así que, si te haces seguidor de este blog, no te inhibas, deja comentarios, escríbeme un mail, contáctate con los artistas, invítanos a todos a conocer tu trabajo.

¿Cómo funciona Art Mining?

Todas las semanas publico una selección de obras halladas en Internet, reunidas bajo un tópico común y acompañadas de algún comentario sobre el conjunto o sobre cada una.

Las categorías o tópicos que utilizo pueden ser los comúnmente aceptados por el lenguaje oficial (pintura, video-arte, street-art, dibujo, collage, fotografía). Pero lo más interesante es utilizar los tags o etiquetas con las que estas obras se clasifican colectivamente en Internet, lo que da como resultado categorías artísticas arbitrarias o inventadas, tales como “retratos de perros”, “macetas artísticas”, “pins”, “blanco y negro”, etc. Por supuesto, no me privo de inventar y utilizar mis propias tags.

No hay criterios curatoriales, ni principios técnicos o profesionales que puedan explicar por qué elijo una obra y no otra. Cada selección es única, absoluta, no hay un ranking ni unas prioridades. Simplemente se debe a una necesidad.

Acerca de los artistas

Los autores de las obras son artistas cuyos trabajos se pueden ver en distintos espacios en Internet. Pueden aparecer trabajos de artistas que recién empiezan así como obras de grandes creadores reconocidos. La idea es mostrar la creatividad de todos los tiempos, lugares y géneros, aprovechando las herramientas que brinda Internet.

Acerca de los derechos de autor

De preferencia, publico obras que estén bajo una licencia Creative Commons. Es decir, que pueden ser distribuidas, copiadas y exhibidas por terceros mostrando los créditos correspondientes. Para la publicación de obras con copyright, siempre que sea posible, pido permiso expreso de los autores.
