Its a common sight to see elephants in the river.I wanted to paint this bull elephant as part of a landscape which included the bow wave in the foreground as it walked though the water .I loved painting the reflection and sun sparkles on the surface of the water

I loved painting this since it provides me with more freedom and enjoyment since I was not trying to obtain a hyper realistic image but was rather trying to capture the atmosphere of camping outdoors next to a blazing fire.

Golden Eye the Majestic Lion / Oil Painting

I really wanted to paint this male lion, I loved the warm and cool colors of this late afternoon scene. But what really attracted me to this subject was the golden eye of this lion reflecting a dash of sky blue, and a tiny white glint. I started the blocking in stage by using liquin so as to speed up the drying process. I generally like the slower drying time since it allows me more time to manipulate the paint. However, since it is our winter and a bit cold the paint has been slow to dry. After the block in stage was complete, I then came back to fill in the details. Now instead of liquin I used odorless thinners with a little linseed oil, a ratio of 1/4 oil to thinners. Watch the creation of this painting on Youtube .

Black Maned Kalahari Lions

Hi, I hope you are all well.

It's been years since I posted something here but thought I would update you all with some of my latest oil paintings. Kalahari brothers depicts two black maned lions walking across the grass plains of the Kalahari in Botswana. The Kalahari Desert in southern Africa is home to a variety of unique wildlife, including the majestic black maned lions. These lions are renowned for their distinctive appearance, with their black manes standing out against their golden fur. Not only do they look different from other lions, but their behavior and habitat also set them apart from their cousins in other parts of Africa.

What sets the black maned lions apart is their habitat, which is unique compared to other lions. The Kalahari Desert is an arid landscape, characterized by sparse vegetation and a scarcity of water. Despite this, the lions are able to thrive in this harsh environment due to their adaptability and ability to conserve water.

The black maned lions are also known for their solitary behavior. Unlike other lion prides, which are made up of several females and their offspring, the lions of the Kalahari live and hunt alone. This is likely due to the scarcity of prey in the desert, which requires the lions to cover a large area in search of food. However, when it comes to mating, the lions will come together and form temporary alliances to increase their chances of mating successfully.

In terms of their hunting habits, the black maned lions of the Kalahari are primarily nocturnal hunters. They rely on their excellent eyesight and hearing to stalk and take down their prey, which often includes antelopes, zebras, and other large mammals. Despite the challenges of hunting in the arid desert, the lions have proven to be incredibly successful hunters, with a high success rate for their hunts.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the black maned lions of the Kalahari is their ability to thrive in a harsh environment. The Kalahari Desert is not an ideal habitat for lions, but the black maned lions have managed to survive and even thrive in this unforgiving landscape. This is a testament to their adaptability and resilience, and a true marvel of nature.

Despite my best efforts to try and do a painting a day this month I have failed.So busy with work and travelling.At on point I travelled 2000km just in a few days.Well I am back home overlooking the banks of the Thamalakane river,and trying to do some painting again.I managed to finish this semi abstract painting of a cambodian girl,she will be part of a series of paintings called children of the world.I hope to keep on adding to this series.Prints are of these are now available,click here if interested Children of the World

As I gazed out from beneath a shady group of palm trees along a peaceful stretch of Mozambican coastline, I was struck by the sight of two women walking along the sand. They were each carrying a bucket on their head, and their movements were graceful and balanced, despite the weight they were carrying. It was clear that these women had mastered the art carrying heavy items on their heads.

The sight was a common one in Africa, where women and girls are often seen carrying heavy loads on their heads, whether it be buckets of water, firewood, or other goods. It is a skill that has been passed down from generation to generation, and it is an important part of daily life for many women in Africa.

Despite the heavy loads they carry, the women move with ease, their bodies adjusting to the weight as they walk. It is a testament to their strength and resilience, and it is a skill that has been developed over time through years of practice and repetition. In many parts of Africa, resources are scarce, and women must travel long distances to gather food and water for their families.

The sight of the two women walking along the beach in Mozambique was a reminder to me of the resilience and strength of women in Africa and around the world. Despite the challenges they face, they carry on, their strength and grace serving as an inspiration to all.

I felt like a change of scenery, so using google street view I went exploring the ancient city of Venice. I have taken hundreds of snapshots of little scenes that captured my attention. Using these as reference material I created this painting. Venice is so picturesque that I will most likely be painting many more. Hopefully one day I will make enough money selling my art, that I will be able to travel to Venice in person and enjoy not just the sights but also the sounds, smells and, even taste some of their Italian cuisine.

The black sail,and the green sea.

I love sailing and being on,in,or around water.I love how water can absorb or reflect light and color this makes it an exciting subject to paint.Crystal clear waters are my favorite because

the colors of what hides beneath the waves can filter through.

This is a local Mozambican sailing dhow, all of which are built by hand with limited tools .When you look at them closely you wonder how they don't sink, since they are so roughly built.

Another painting inspired by one of my trips to Mozambique.Saw these kids swimming and playing in the warm Indian ocean along the Mozambican coast.They were totally oblivious to the fact that they were swimming naked and were just having the time of their lives.I thought Childhood Exuberance would be a good title,what do you think?I will be trying to paint 30 paintings this month,ha ha,yeah we will see how that goes.I am taking part in the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge held by lesliesaeta.blogspot.com my aim is just to have fun and to keep painting.

Here is one of my latest semi abstract portrait paintings. I used blue and red, as they are good contrasting colours and I feel they have created a great vibrancy within the art. I wanted the eyes to be the focal point, but the overall painting to look unfinished. This painting is done in oils over an acrylic blue and red base.

The breathtaking view from our bungalow was a great vantage point to observe the changing scenes along a peaceful stretch of Mozambican coastline. The golden light of the setting sun cast a warm glow over the gently lapping waves and the palm trees that swayed in the breeze. The colors of the sky changed from bright blues to fiery reds and oranges as the sun descended towards the horizon.
As the sun reached the edge of the world, two figures emerged on the water. A pair of Mozambican fishermen, sailing a wooden boat, slowly made their way along the shore. They were silhouetted against the fiery sky, their movements smooth and rhythmic as they prepared to anchor.
It was a scene that had been repeated countless times along this coastline for generations, a tradition passed down from father to son.
As the sun disappeared below the horizon and the sky faded to a deep blue, the two fishermen finally finished their work for the day. They gathered their catch and began the journey back to shore, their boat bobbing gently on the calm water.
The sight of the two fishermen, their boats silhouetted against the setting sun, was a reminder of the simple beauty and timeless traditions of this peaceful stretch of coastline. It was a scene that would stay with us long after our trip was over, a memory of a moment of peace and serenity in a world that is often chaotic and fast-paced.
This scene, of two men and the boat against the backdrop of a stunning sunset, is a testament to the power of nature and the importance of preserving the traditions and cultures that have been passed down from generation to generation. It is a reminder that even in the midst of rapid change and technological advancements, there are still moments of simplicity and beauty to be found in the world.

One of the fishing methods along the coastline of Mozambique is to set a drag net out at sea using a boat. Immediately it has been set, the the ropes attached to the ends of the net would be brought to shore.At shore a number of people sometimes 5-15 people would start pulling in the rope, effectively bringing in the net.Not surprisingly there are kilometers of rope that have to be stored away once it is brought to shore.Here you will find that this task is assigned to a number of boys who would pull in the rope for hours until all of it has been neatly stored away in their dhow.

Many domestic animals here in Botswana roam freely around.I remember some friends who had just arrived from Canada,excitedly telling us to stop the car and to find the farmer as they had just seen about 20 cows grazing next to the road.After having a laugh at their expense,they explained that back home they would never see any domestic animals outside a fenced enclosure.If a stray animal was seen they would phone the local farmer who would thank them and proceed to catch his errant animal.I would say 99% of cattle,goats,donkeys and horses are freely wandering around our local town ,Maun.

It was while having a picnic with friends along the river some months ago, that I came across this nameless horse who was contently eating the sweet green grass along the river.Since painting it ,I have decided to name the horse Sahara,which is better than being nameless.

When the tide goes out a number of fishermens boats become stranded along the beach.Up close one can see that each boat has been handmade,with only the most basic tools.You would imagine that due the the large amount of patches and loose caulking between the planks the boats would battle to remain afloat.However despite looking unseaworthy,they are actually quite well made considering that the builders did not have any access to electric tools.Many of the boats have been painted vivid colours which certainly adds to the beauty of the Mozambican coastline.

It has been my dream to visit the coastline of Mozambique again for a long time.Last year September I was able to do so.The two week trip was one of the best I have enjoyed.Nothing could beat waking up to the sound of the waves on the beach,only 50 meters away from our balcony.Although the small town of Vilanculos was quite a distance away we still had the local people sailing their dhows,and pulling in their nets.All this activity added to the atmosphere and which I am now able to share through a few of my paintings such as this one .

Chasing shadows was inspired by a local, annual horse race that takes place here in Maun.It has become quite a big event among the locals ,who flock in large numbers to the event to cheer their favorite horse.There are no permanent grandstands or seats,so most people stands along the edge of the dusty track watching and cheering.

After selling two small paintings last year on this blog,I realised firsthand that it was possible to sell artwork online.I have therefore decided to sell my smaller works such as this painting online at www.dailypaintworks.com / Roger Brown Gallery.
