I made this art piece for my digital media class, but my teacher didn't really like it. This was made using illustrator to be a "Text as Image" project. I took this as creating image and text synonymously.

This piece is an homage to my Mother and Spongebob, both of whom I hold near to my heart.

In this episode, Spongebob is angry because no one will take his idea (Pretty Patties: Available in 6 Designer Colors) seriously. He goes up to Patrick and the conversation detailed in the image above ensues. Patrick's problem is so absurd and childish, but it can easily be reflected on anger in our society. "OMG! OBAMA SWATTED A FLY!" How significant is this anger that we have to waste time on it? Because we forgive and forget and move on. I'm not saying, by any means, that anger is not a legitimate emotion or expression. I'm simply commenting on the fact that anger is often very trivial. Immediately after Patrick expresses his sadness over his inability to see his forehead, Spongebob's anger defuses and they continue to pursue Spongebob's dream of Painted Meat (Not Tainted Meat!). I know it's a joke, but I think it really reflects the futility of anger and the nature of childhood.

When I was a kid, I would come home and complain to my mother about how kids knocked over my blocks or stole my chocolate bar, and she would say, "You have two eyes, two ears, a nose, and a family. Don't be angry! Just go play."

I had to create a portrait of myself for my digital media class, and this is what I came up with.

It's just a rough draft of what I really want to do. The proportions and colors are kind of weird right now, but I think it gets my point across. This image is supposed to be commentary on the current political climate. People have very few "nice" things to say anymore, and the dichotomy of the Democrats and Republicans is scary. I've seen "NOBAMA" t-shirts, and "LET'S SHIT ON THE TEA PARTY" posters, but you never see anyone saying anything nice anymore. It's not that I don't take the many political issues we have seriously. I just don't really take myself seriously :\ Hence the portrait.

This was originally a photo of Purple daisies. I made into a pinkish, purple wallpaper type image. I KINDA cheated with a filter, but what the hell.

I tried to make myself into a mime... it turned out more like V for Vendetta... Fucking scary...

For the record, I did not COMPLETELY drop the ball on this one. It's really just bad timing. You see, I am on vacation, and 2 minutes into my vacation I realized I have no way to post my art due to my lack of flash drive and/or supplies... so I suppose I will resume when I get back... on Sunday. HOWEVER! I HAVE been dabbling in art-related activities, so I suppose for now I'll submit regular ol' blogposts. Which you can argue is art... but that's not really the point... so regular posts resume Sunday, for now you get to hear about my boring life.

Guess who's baaaaaack? After a long, long, long, long, LONG break, I have decided to come out of retirement and start updating my blag again. Here's what you've missed:

"Where will art be in 20 years?"

With the rate of technology and other social advances in society, who can possibly perceive what art will be like in 20 years, let alone a year? The world is changing at an alarming rate and, unfortunately, is becoming obsessed with efficiency: Light speed internet access is still “too slow;” Libraries worth of information can be condensed into a cup of SD cards, so the time-consuming, tedious act of etching artfully placed lines of graphite onto dried pulp rectangles will essentially become obsolete. Sure, they’re always nice to look at, but we’ll probably have robots to produce the “archaic” drawings we’ve outgrown. But does that mean the future of art is in peril? No, on the contrary, I believe the art is found in the change itself. Art, so narrowly defined by modern day society, is found everywhere: the graffiti of our rebellious youth, the poor busker on the streets, the powerful speech of the fortified individual. Paintings can be digitally created now, and animations are rendered by computers in minutes. “Talent” isn’t limited to your skill in drawing anymore. It’s your creative mind. That’s the future of art. It’s crazy to think that art has been around for thousands of years, and people are still innovating, but that’s the beauty of art. So where will we be in 20 years art-wise? It’s impossible to say. But I do know one thing.

It’s going to be fucking insane.

It's weird having a deadline. Now I know how webcomic artists feel. :\

So I'm working on my portfolio right now, and it's been kinda rough. Portfolios are supposed to contain your most recent works, reflecting your talent, creativity, and personality. Kind of like a college essay. One that takes 200 hours to write. And instead of using a computer or ink, you use your blood, sweat, and tears. And maybe a paint brush.

My mentor is a very traditional, conservative, korean christian. He's a nice guy, but he only speaks in the occasional one word sentence (ex. Good. What? Ok.) It's funny though, because he's ALSO an artist, which entails some NON-traditional, liberal, NOT korean thinking. Sometimes he shows me samples of his favorite artists to give me ideas. He is rather fond of one artist (I don't know the artist's name because it's longer than one word -.-) that has a very asian, very graphic style. While scrolling through a few of the artist's works, my mentor abruptly stopped at a particularly odd image. It was a drawing of a guy riding a motorcycle. Except instead of seeing a guy, the viewer stares at the motorcyclist's naked ass. And instead of having an ACTUAL motorcycle, he has a handlebar... and his ass. And instead of having a tail pipe to release motorcycle emissions, he has an ass. It's weird enough to stare at a picture of someone's flaming motorcycle ass, but with your silent, asian, 30 something mentor? After about 3 minutes of staring, my mentor finally turns to me and says "So cool". That's TWO words.

Despite this, my mentor maintains a very korean attitude. Work efficiently. Work hard. Work diligently. Work harder. Uphold family honor. So as a result, I feel rushed all the time. If I spend more than two days on an art project, he gets ALL UP IN MY GRILL. I recognize that I don't have a limitless time period... but how can one be expected to maximize their potential when they're stuffed into a box?

Guess who went to the free Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert at Millennium Park. Someone in THIS GENERAL VICINITY! It was the Inaugural performance of Ricardo Muti, the new conductor for the CSO. It was SOOPER awesome. So awesome, that I half-expected Yo-yo Ma to parachute out of an airplane onto the stage, and have an epic music battle with Muti. Jenny Kim and I, after mercilessly slaying HUNDREDS of people standing in our way (slaying? I meant kindly pardoning ourselves to every stranger we encountered), we somehow found a spot RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE ORCHESTRA. Or at least as close as we could get. They barred us off the ACTUAL seating area. That's right, the MAN is in our WAY AGAIN! WELL YOU KNOW WHAT "MAN"? IMA BITE 'CHOO IN THE FACE! Ahem. Regardless, it was a very pleasant experience. After the third song (we had to leave early to catch the train) we took our OBLIGATORY picture in front of the bean and sallied over to Subway® for my very first FIVE DOLLAR FOOT LONG! Don't choo be judgin' me GURRRRRRRL *SNAP SNAP*.

The concert as a whole, was awesome. As for Muti... well he's good...

but he's no Dudamel

Long Lost Cousins Wut?!?

My family has a long complicated history that I don't think one post could handle, so I'll keep it short and simple. I've never met the majority of my dad's side of the family, with the exceptions of my two awesome aunts. And for maaaaaaany reasons, most of which I'm unaware of, my mother's side of the family cut themselves off when I was in first grade. Last I counted, I had four cousins on my mom's side, and one cousin on my dad's side. Who is BLACK! :D Anyway... going into my senior year, it's been over 11 years since I've seen any of my maternal cousins. I could have 28 cousins now for all I know. So what do you do when some random asian kid sends you a friend request saying that they're your long lost cousin? *MIND EXPLOSION*

I'm going to need a tylenol -.-
