Sooner or later a child on your lap will ask where heaven is, who lives there, and whether they will see someone they miss. Grandparents hear it in the car. Parents hear it after lights-out. The question sounds sudden. It rarely is. Children have been turning it over for days.

The kindest way to answer is also the oldest. Open the Bible first. Tell them what Jesus said. Then, if they want a story they can see and touch, put a children’s book in their hands.

Start with what Jesus already told us

Jesus did not leave heaven as a mystery for scholars. He spoke to friends who were worried. “In my Father’s house are many rooms,” He said. “I go to prepare a place for you.” That is a sentence a six-year-old can hold. Heaven is God’s home. Jesus is getting it ready. The people who love Him will be with Him.

He also made His feelings about children unmistakable. When grown-ups tried to keep the little ones back, Jesus was indignant. “Let the children come to me.” The kingdom of heaven belongs to people who come like that—open-handed, unembarrassed, sure they are wanted.

Those two pictures are enough for a first talk with a child between 4 and 8: a real home, and a Savior who wants them near.

Keep the first talk short

One verse. One plain sentence. One question. Then stop.

You might say, “Heaven is where God lives. Jesus loves you, and He is making a place for the people who love Him.” Read John 14:2–3 or Matthew 19:14. Ask, “What do you think it would feel like to be with Jesus?” Wait longer than feels comfortable. Children fill the quiet if we let them.

Close with safety, not a test. “You can ask me again tomorrow.”

Save the hard answers for when they ask

You do not have to cover death, pets, and salvation in one sitting. When those questions do come, give the child one true line and keep the longer help for yourself.

If someone has died: “Their body stopped working. The part of them that loves you is with Jesus. It is all right to be sad.” Do not say they “went to sleep” or that “God needed another angel.” Use the person’s name. Admit you are sad too.

If they ask about a baby the family lost: “That little one is with Jesus. He loves children—even the ones we only got to hold for a little while.”

If they ask about a pet: “God loves what He made. The Bible pictures a peaceful world where animals are not afraid. We can trust Him with the animals we love.”

If they ask how someone gets to heaven: “Jesus made the way. We tell Him we are sorry, we believe He loves us, and we want to follow Him.” Invitation, not scare. John 3:16 is enough.

Freedom Rodriguez

The childhood of Freedom wasn't truly free. The talented illustrator grew up in a challenging and broken home that exposed him to violence and drugs from an early age. As darkness threatened to envelop him, he turned to both art and religion to stay on the right track. The OM ArtsLink reports that Rodriguez was encouraged by art teachers as well as Christian friends to turn away from the temptations that surrounded him at a crucial time in his life.

Lynn Kircher

Lynn also knew he was destined for a life of painting when he began introducing himself as an artist at the age of six. The Denver Catholic Register says that the painter was inspired by the early roots of Catholicism when priests used descriptive illustrations to share stories with illiterate church members. He aims to create pieces that bridge the gap between divinity and ordinary humanity. Lynn instructed new students in the arts as an instructor at the Colorado School of Art for more than 20 years, but now he primarily focuses on his inspirational works.

Janet Hyun

Janet Hyun has always dreamed of having a major impact on the world as an artist but did not foresee the discovery of God in her life in 2001. That chance meeting with a living God altered her outlook on life and changed the course of her artwork permanently. The “Heaven is for Real” account by Colton Burpo (not to be confused with recently recanted story by Alex Malarkey who, after reading the Bible admitted he fabricated the story for attention) has taken the world by storm. Colton Burpo knows that Heaven & God Exist. The four-year-old Colton’s amazing story of his trip to Heaven and back is described in the book and movie Heaven Is For Real. Colton had a near-death-experience in 2003 and lived to tell about going to Heaven and sitting on the lap of the resurrected Jesus.
After surviving emergency surgery when he was three years old, Colton slowly began sharing his life-changing experience of visiting Heaven with others. Everyone in the local community, including his parents and members of Colton’s church where Todd, Colton’s dad, is the minister, doubted little Colton and initially thought the child’s mind was playing tricks on him.

Colton’s Heavenly Visitation – Details Revealed

According to Colton's parents, Todd and Sonja Burpo, after Colton’s appendix burst, his condition was life-threatening. As Colton underwent emergency surgery, his parents were distraught with despair and spent hour after hour at the hospital praying.

God answered his parents’ prayers; Colton made it through surgery and eventually made a full recovery. However, once home from the hospital, his parents felt there was a “difference” in Colton, and they could not quite put their finger on what it was.

Todd and Sonja discovered the source of that “difference” approximately four months after the tragic incident, when Colton began sharing what he had seen in Heaven with his parents. After Colton revealed many shocking and private family details, his parents began to realize that their son had indeed had an encounter with God and a Heavenly experience.

What and Who Did Colton See in Heaven?

Colton told his parents that the angels sang to him so he would not be afraid. He told them that he sat on Jesus’ lap, surrounded by winged angels. Colton could describe everyone he saw in Heaven and shared details about Jesus, the Archangel Michael with his special sword, Mary, John the Baptist, and even his unborn sister, who had died in his mommy’s tummy.

Colton’s revelations about his experience did not end there. Colton was able to describe Jesus in both character and appearance in detail. Colton went on to say that Jesus then sent him back to earth to answer Todd’s prayers.

As Colton shared more and more of his experiences with his parents, they didn’t know what to think. Of course, they wanted to believe their son, but they could not understand his experience. Colton had been very sick, but he hadn't actually died on the operating table, like others who have had near-death experiences.

Skeptics have tried to explain away Colton’s experience based on his knowledge of Bible stories. Colton’s parents were skeptical too - then Colton unexpectedly began to share even more astonishing revelations that further confirmed his heavenly visitation was true and that knowing the truth about heaven changes everything.

Colton Describes Meeting His Older Sister in Heaven

Colton asked his parents why they were in separate rooms during his surgery. He said he had seen them from Heaven. His parents knew there was no way Colton could have known this. The boy also explained that he had met his great-grandfather, a man who had died three decades before Colton was born. Colton pointed him out in a photo to his parents – a photo Colton had never seen, one from when his great-grandfather was about 30 years old. Colton even knew his nickname, ‘Pops.’

Colton, who has an older sister and a younger brother, started talking about missing his ‘other’ sister. While Colton had never been told he had another sister, he told his parents he had met her in Heaven. Unbeknownst to Colton at the time of this revelation, his mom had miscarried a baby a few years earlier - before Colton was even born.

While Colton’s vivid accounts of Heaven surprised some in the Christian community must realize that God does work in mysterious ways. Though some remain uncertain about Heavenly encounters, Colton’s childish innocence, his unwavering conviction, and remarkable accounts of Heaven and God’s Love ring true for most. So much so that a few years after Colton shared his experiences with his family, his father, Todd Burpo, was still being asked to write a book. It took some time, but once written, the Heaven is for Real book immediately became a best seller. More importantly, it was a place where many people found hope, encouragement, and Jesus. But What About Coping As a Parent?

For any parent, not least a pastor like Todd, finding out that your child had visited Heaven would come as a shock. For many parents, the main question would be: “Is it true, or is it make-believe?” While Todd and Sonja Burpo always wanted to support their son, at first they struggled to accept Colton’s claims. Could their child really have been there, seen Jesus …God? If he hadn’t, where was he learning the stuff he was talking about?
In an extract from his bestselling book, Heaven Is for Real, Todd Burpo wrote:
“Here was my kid, in his matter-of-fact, preschooler voice, telling me things that were not only astonishing on their face, but that also matched Scripture in every detail, right down to the rainbow colors in the book of Revelation, which is hardly preschool material. How could my little boy know this stuff?”

It might have taken Colton’s parents a little while to come to grips with their son’s encounter with the Divine, but they knew he was telling the truth.

So If Heaven is for Real ... Does Everyone Get to Go?

According to Colton, not everyone gets into Heaven. A few months after his recovery, Colton was at a funeral that his father was ministering. In a way that only an innocent child could do Colton walked toward the coffin, pointed at it, and yelled, “He can’t get into Heaven if he didn’t have Jesus in his heart!”

When asked by Fox News host Sean Hannity whether everyone goes to Heaven, 14-year-old Colton replied unequivocally, “No, not everyone goes to Heaven.” He then explained that to get into Heaven, “we have to let go of the things we love on earth, and not everyone can do that.” Colton’s answer was unwavering and aligned perfectly with biblical Scripture. 

What Does Scripture Say About Who Enters Into Heaven?

According to the Word of God in John 14:6, Jesus has said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through Me." Meaning the only way to Heaven is through Jesus, so not everyone enters into Heaven.

To answer your questions - I purchased the Puffin as I was working on a project that requires a lot of metallic threads (DMC Light Effects) and was having a real tangled mess every time I had to separate the threads. Examining the Heaven is for Real Hoax: The Devil is in the Details

Not To Be Confused! There Are Two Different Children’s Heavenly Stories: Malarkey, The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven, and Burpo, The Boy Who Went To Heaven. One is the truth - the other a recanted lie!

“The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven” is the tale of an imaginative six-year-old boy who was frightened and in shock after a terrifying accident and his alleged near-death experience. His bestselling book quickly sold more than one million copies and created a stir in the evangelical community. In the book, Malarkey suffers a near-fatal accident, breaking his spinal column at the neck. Doctors all but give up hope on him – yet, miraculously, he lives.

During his hospitalization, Alex tells captivating stories to the people who surrounded him during his medical crisis. The stories intrigue his family and friends, and at the tender age of six, he uses these heavenly stories to gain attention. His father, Kevin Malarkey, saw hope and opportunity in his son’s tales, and the father-son duo later collaborated to write “The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven”, a book that tells a story of how the youngster went to heaven and returned.

Yet many discerning believers wondered about Alex’s confusing heavenly details because “God is not a God of confusion but of Peace.” 1 Corinthians 14:33

For many people familiar with Scripture, Alex's recollections were a cause for alarm. For example, Alex recalls Heaven as a mostly dark place where he often saw the devil entering and leaving through a hole in outer heaven. Alex describes the devil: “The devil's mouth is funny looking, with only a few moldy teeth. And I've never noticed any ears. His body has a human form, with two bony arms and two bony legs. He has no flesh on his body, only some moldy stuff. His robes are torn and dirty. I don't know about the color of the skin or robes—it's just too scary to concentrate on these things!” We find hope in confirmation of the heavenly! Perhaps this is the reason why so many people were attracted to Alex’s story. Aside from that, it is hard to believe that an injured child could make such things up … so we assumed he was offering an honest account.

Though unflattering, these details help us understand what caused Alex to conjure up his near-death experience and his fictional visit to heaven as described in the book. It was a tall tale that created a Heaven is for Real Hoax - and many were left confused after Alex revealed the truth.

Malarkey Recants His Fabricated Story Shocking Everyone … Except for His Mother

Admitting wrongdoing can be both painful and a source of freedom! Alex, now a teenager, has been reading his Bible – that is Good News! Recently, Malarkey realized his actions were wrong, and he posted a comment on his Facebook page recanting his original story. He confessed to making up everything in the book – a comment that, oddly, was deleted by the page’s moderators. After this, his mother, Beth Malarkey, posted his retraction on her online blog and tried to reach booksellers, but was given no heed. John MacArthur’s The Glory of Heaven contains the disclaimers of both mother and son. According to Beth, the predicament arose because “Alex never concluded he was in heaven. He was a small boy who experienced something extraordinary.

Furthermore, Alex wrote the following letter in a desperate attempt to recant the contents of his book and to stop the profiteering from his fable. It was entitled “An Open Letter to Lifeway and Other Sellers, Buyers, and Marketers of Heaven Tourism by the Boy Who Did Not Come Back From Heaven”:

Please forgive my brevity, but I have to keep this short. Alex says:

• I did not die.
• I did not go to heaven.
• When I made the claims, I had never read the Bible.

I said I went to heaven because I thought it would get me attention. When I made the claims that I did, I had never read the Bible. People have profited from lies, and continue to. They should read the Bible, which is enough. The Bible is the only source of truth. Anything written by man cannot be infallible.

It is only through repentance of your sins and a belief in Jesus as the Son of God, who died for your sins (even though he committed none of his own) so that you can be forgiven may you learn of Heaven outside of what is written in the Bible…not by reading a work of man. I want the whole world to know that the Bible is sufficient. Those who market these materials must be called to repent and hold the Bible as enough.

So, the bad news: six-year-old Alex fabricated his story. The Good News, teenaged, Alex encountered the Lord and admitted his mistakes after reading Scripture – So we believe Romans 8:28 for Alex and his family: "…that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose."

Despite Confusion Created By the Book and Critics – Colton Knows Heaven Is For Real

A young Colton Burpo also tells of his own near-death experience in the book “Heaven is for Real.” The New York Times bestseller has sold over 6 million copies, has been published in 39 languages, and was made into a blockbuster movie in 2014. The Burpo family has a global, evangelical family ministry. Colton’s greatest desire in life is to let people know how much God loves us … sometimes through music. Yet, because of the Malarkey Heaven is for Real hoax, Colton Burpo has come under much pressure about the authenticity of his heavenly journey.

This has created confusion about the reality of Heaven and personal discernment.

Malarkey’s recantation of his story ironically coincided with the release of the 2014 blockbuster movie Heaven is For Real, which gave people hope of a Heaven to look forward to.  The timing of Malarkey’s recanted story is no coincidence and worth examining. The release of Malarkey’s false narrative was so coincidental and disruptive it seemed to have intentional and damaging spiritual roots. Who would intentionally want to see works of God fail?

God is the Creator and Lover of Souls. The enemy is a liar and seeks to destroy. He can only copy and counterfeit what God creates. We teach people about Jesus and the love of God through creating, licensing, manufacturing, and distributing inspirational gifts and art. Portions of our proceeds are donated to charities and causes that help others in need at home and abroad.

Jesus Love the Little Children

Jesus loves the children of the world

The patience and love Jesus feels about little children is revealed as he speaks to his disciples and the crowd when he says ...  

Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. ~ Matthew 19:14 

I assure you that unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of heaven. ~ Matthew 18:3

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. ~ Matthew 5:8 

         To the pure, all things are pure .... ~ Titus 1:15 

Everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself  ... ~ 1John 3:3  

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this:  to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world. ~ James 1:27
