Spectrum Dance is looking for artists

Seeking 1 – 4 GRAFFITI ARTISTS TO APPEAR ONSTAGE
DURING DANCE PERFORMANCES AT THE MOORE THEATRE

Spectrum Dance Theater performs March 23/24 at the Moore Theatre. One piece, Short Dances, Little Stories, requires a graffiti artist to paint on the backdrops during the performance (35 minutes). The selected artist(s) will be required to attend a tech rehearsal on March 22, a dress rehearsal on March 23, and the two performances on March 23 and 24. Details TBD.
SELECTED ARTIST(S) WILL BE PAID AN HONORARIUM.
PERFORMANCE PAINTING MATERIALS WILL BE SUPPLIED.

AUDITION: Saturday, MARCH 3, 2007 10 AM – NOON

In the early 90's my buddy Chris introduced me to the incredible UK comic magazine Deadline. I was enthralled by the Tank Girl Covers, just imagining this dayglo Acid /Punk scene happening in London and how much i was missing being in Albuquerque. Well here is a video of the Great Jamie Hewlett, creator of tank girl and the gorillas, talking about his love of zombie movies and daffy duck.

I was in Albuquerque last week, it was a strange homecoming. My Grandmother died after a lengthy battle with cancer......

I had lost my grandfather when I was very young and My great grandmother when I was very 19 y.o. without a clue. But i had yet to experience the true pain of loss before this family tragedy. I feel that the world has changed and nothing will ever be the same. There is a bittersweet thing about death is that you finally get family to stop and realize they are family. I saw cousins who i had not seen in 15 years. i also went to a couple of b-ball games my cousin jon played in. He goes to Albuquerque Academy and they played a game at my old high school West Mesa. I could not pass that up.

It was fun to run around the ol' alma mater. The place has not changed all that much. The game was fun but i think that due to the fact that all of the west mesa freshman squad were 10 years past puberty academy was punished. My Aunt doesn't think the academy coach knows how to sub players.
I ate some great food but did not shoot flix of it. Didn't even think about doin it. honest. i swear.
If you are in 'buerque stop in at El Charritos on central and 47th. Best damn food i've had in a while.
I had heard that there was an amazing art show at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. It was posters culled from the Sam L. Slick Collection of Latin American and Iberian Posters. I couldn't get any flix but those links should have plenty. there was also a piece by one of my favorite artists, Chaz Bojorquez.

I Like Ur Art: Saatchi Creates an Online Hangout for Artists

Julie Ann Travis , 23, a graduate student at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, is curious to see what her peers are up to and to share some of her latest work. So recently she posted a self-portrait in which her head is buried in a pile of dirt at Stuart

The brainchild of the London-based advertising magnate and collector Charles Saatchi, this social networking outlet — a kind of MySpace knockoff for artists — is causing something of a sensation, boosting traffic at the gallery’s Web site overall to more than three million hits a day.

In May Mr. Saatchi, famed for spotting young unknowns and turning them into art-world superstars, created a section on his Web site for artists of all ages to post their work at no charge. It is called Your Gallery, and now boasts contributions by about 20,700 artists, including 2,000 pieces of video art.

Everything there is for sale, with neither the buyer nor the seller paying a cent to any dealer or other middleman. About 800 new artists have been signing up each week.

And since Stuart (shorthand for “student art”) went online last month, some 1,300 students (including 450 in the United States) have created Web pages there. No one vets the quality or style of the art.

With dealers and collectors scouring student shows for undiscovered talent and students hunting for dealers to represent them, Mr. Saatchi has tapped a vein that can’t stop gushing. If Stuart gains anything like the cachet of MySpace, it has the potential to morph from a nonprofit venture into a gold mine for Mr. Saatchi.

For now, he said, he is simply enjoying the role of spectator. “When I launched the site, I took the view that the best thing was to leave it alone for the first year and purposely not buy anything, because I didn’t want to compromise what the site was supposed to do: appeal to a wide group of students,” he said.

His office, meanwhile, is fielding e-mail messages and calls from dealers, museum curators and directors, and collectors around the world who have discovered new work at the site and want to meet some of the artists in their studios. (Of the 20,700 or so artists at Your Gallery, roughly 6,000 are from Britain and 6,000 from the United States, with the rest scattered across the world.)

I would be on my rounds and at noon everyday the local college jazz station, WCLK I think, would play that song but totally jazzed out. Hot as hell Atlanta in sept.

11 Spring - Wooster on Spring - Street Art Exhibition

I hope you guys have heard about the amazing artshow happening in NYC this weekend. The folks at Wooster Collective have organized a group showing of the worlds most notorious street artists in a cool, formerly abandoned but soon to be high end condos building in Manhattan. Being a gallerist gives a special insight into how exciting it must be to create a show on this scale with absolutely zero commercial pressures. Well here is a cool flickr pool about the show. One thought I had was ......could this be the end for street art in NYC? The powers that be always give you a last meal before they execute you.

BLVD Gallery is proud to present the latest installment in Michael Leavitts
Art Army® series, “The Guerilla Crew”. The Art Army® action figures are homages to the killer art and artists that rock our world. Instead of making boring normal art, Leavitt is paying tribute to great people and work. This is no customization hobby, and it also ain't some profound artistic statement. The one-off figures are each original, fully posable mini sculptures engineered for major articulation. They look like real toys, but no Art Army® figure is machine manufactured. These action figures don't fit in any molds. Each is sculpted from scratch as one artists' offering to an icon. The “Guerilla Crew” is Mikes tribute to the vibrant street/ urban art community featuring legends of graffiti, skateboarding, Hip Hop, and street fashion. For this show Mike has sculpted figurines of
Banksy, Twist, Seen, Tupac, Nigo, Basquiat, Lady Pink, ODB, Fafi, and more.

We are also proud to present new works from three very talented painters,
Kristian Olson (Los Angeles), Colin Johnson (Minnesota), and Chris Huth ( Denver/Seattle). All three of these artists have been getting attention individually for their unique approach to the craft of painting. Kristian Olson has developed a mixed media technique for his work. Combining elaborately designed digital artwork, giclée printing, and acrylic paint he creates otherworldly entities and structures that beg for exploration.
Colin Johnson utilizes an interesting combination of collage and more painterly techniques that transitions between otherworldly and folkart. Chris Huth brings a more street level approach to his work, having once been active in the graffiti world. He is now pushing towards a more refined look to his work leaving behind the ubiquitous drips and clouds that typify graffiti inspired artwork while retaining his strong graphic style.

Last year I co-curated an artshow for redbull and was interviewed by media from around the world. It's funny when you do that especially for T.V. because you never have the opportunity to see how it comes out. Well thanks to you tube I get to see myself the same way Brazillians do.... ohh the horror.

I mentioned here before that Mike Leavitt is showing at BLVD in December. Mike is an amazing sculptor who works in action Figure scale. For the December show he has decided to focus on urban culture sculpting Graffiti legends, Street art Ballers, and Hip Hop Heroes.

Banksy recently auctioned Warhol Rip offs of Kate Moss for 75k+ at Sothebys.
I like his Graffiti but these paintings are getting ridiculous, and the prices associated with them as well. I hope he drops out of the artworld completely and goes back to what he does best, vandalism.
