Wayde Owen

Wayde Owen is a 32 years old Male artist born in Australia, currently working in Other Regional Queensland art precinct, SOUTHPORT, Queensland, Australia.

Wayde Owen is an artist who paints. Dead male portraits, anthropomorphic quails, skulls and Staffordshire bullterriers are all part of his vernacular. ‘Ladders disasters, failed telecommunication towers’ and coffins extrude from their heads and mouths. Owen paints his subjects with both empathy and indifference but acting on unforeseen intuitions for the feel of material, paint splashes, smears, smudges, streaks, stains, skids and drips on the canvas. Owen intends to address issues of communication, the male condition, and mortality through his own personal set of subjects.

Owens work exists as a catalyst or archive if you like, that can be characterized by a growing concern with universal truths such as ingestion and growth, decay and mortality. The underlying narrative involves Owens own on-going obsession with the inherent failure of communication technologies. The work is intended to pose a series of questions regarding what remains; when a man dies, what is his legacy, how do we digest his existence and where does his message go?

It is through the private act of painting that Owen intends to give his ideas the maximum run for their money. Owen stresses ‘I can’t really paint pretty pictures or even things that make people feel good, what I want to do is squeeze myself into or out of the work’. Owen enjoys the tactile fleshiness of paint and considers the problems of painting as equal in subject to his life; painting is not just a process or material, it is a crisis. Owen recreates things in his mind, as a recollection of history, time or experiences and thinks of himself as a human doing useful things. Owen says ‘I try to remind the spectator (where possible) that this creative act was initiated by me, but can only be fulfilled by them’.

While paint tells a tactile story, creativity and ideas are a chance to connect people with their critical sense. Owen is acutely aware of the subjective nature of painting, but for him it is the ultimate creative performance and the key to working out very real problems. The execution of such problems rest with pure intuition and cannot be easily translated into self-analysis. Considering this Owen provides all his works with a stillness, so they may survive the riotous company they will endure.

Graham Abraham

Graham Abraham is a 55 years old Male artist born in Australia, currently working in Brisbane art precinct, KENMORE, Queensland, Australia.

Graham Abraham grew up on the shores of Moreton Bay and has been painting and photographing wildlife and the natural environment since he was nine years of age. Early on he was inspired by a neighbour who happened to be an artist and by his mother who as a child was devoted to her local flora and fauna in Brookfield, Queensland. Her collections are now in the Artist’s possession.

Graham Abraham studied at the Brisbane College of Art, gaining a Certificate in Commercial Art in 1973 and in 1988 a Diploma of Arts – awarded honours in the final year of his studies at the University of South Australia.

Since about 1976 onward Graham has travelled much of Australia, New Zealand and to islands of the pacific with his wife, children and camera, keenly observing wildlife and associated habitats, aboriginal culture and the remaining evidence of our shared cultural heritage wherever he has visited. Areas of most interest are the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Kakadu, Northern Territory, the Flinders and Gammon Ranges, South Australia, the gorges of central Queensland including Carnarvon, the Cooloola and Noosa region of Queensland, the south west of Western Australia and other coastal and bushland areas of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

Inspiration for painting is and always has been the history and cultural heritage, the bio-diversity – flora and fauna, in particular birds, habitats, environments and landscapes of the vast diversity that represents the natural and cultural world that we all share. The sea birds of Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave Islands, southern Great Barrier Reef have held a particular fascination. Visits to these islands resulted in a number of paintings that depict the beautiful creatures that inhabit these magnificent and pristine environments.

Continuing involvement with conservation initiatives that support our endangered and threatened species provided opportunities to engage with scientific endeavours to preserve some of Australia's fragile ecosystems and wildlife. In 2006 a reserve set aside for the preservation of the endangered Bridled Nailtail Wallaby was visited in central Queensland in order to gather visual material for painting the Wallaby in its native habitat. In 2009 paintings were done to highlight the flora, fauna and environment of the world heritage listed Wollumbin Caldera – the Mt Warning area of northern New South Wales.

Subject matter that will form the basis of work for the future will include some of the native species that inhabit the coastlines of northern New South Wales extending to the rainforested areas of Wollumbin, Lamington and across to the Scenic Rim of southern Queensland. Other national and international wildlife subjects and associated environments will also be given consideration.

A modern realist depiction of subject matter in acrylic on quality italian linen canvas is the preferred medium however experimentation with other materials often occurs.

Painting professionally since 2006 has resulted in one solo exhibition at the Cunningham Artspace, CSIRO bio-science Precinct, University of Queensland and in various group exhibitions.

Interrupting fantasia with subtle impurities, walk-ons from the annual circus, a burlesque night-in or a discounted river-cruise, as if to keep everything off-balance and confused, it is felt there are near resources in reserve.
Non-submissive, the promise of openness is constantly deferred, it does not adopt a determinist position.
If the subject matter and brush strokes are familiar, behind it all, - the stories that don’t add up, the affinities that aren’t explained – is something very difficult to articulate, an experience, an autobiography, a world view, a private self”

Robert Johansson

Robert Johansson is a 32 years old Male artist born in Sweden, currently working in Norway.

Most of my works revolves around different states of control and non-control in correlation with closeness, intimacy and ephemerality. The threads of investigation are processed and witnessed through do-it-yourself practices, individual stories and humour.

I have made several works that refer to fitness culture. By exploring the social status and stamina of the body, the works reveal the gap that traditionally separates culture and man as a natural creature. I choose to work with a variety of media, such as drawing, sculpture and performance.

For the past years I have been working on the pyrographic project Fly. Burn-pens are being used, which is a traditional Nordic craft, thus exploring the possibilities of drawing. It is a constellation of correlated themes, between dreams, memories, virtualities and realities.

I have recently finnished a commission at a junior high school in Norway. Key words for the commission are support, roots and challenge. The title In situ means
in the place in Latin. It is used in many different contexts, e.g. art, archeology, architecture, medicine, law and space sciences.

Together with Jan Hakon Erichsen I have four shows in Scandinavia the forthcoming year. These exhibitions will be part of a series of installations made up by site-specific wall and tape drawings, sculptures, photos and videos. The dream of returning to primary values and the frustration in the impossibility within this wish, will set the backdrop for the aggressive works. The process towards the shows will take form as a cross pollination, where the works emerge in direct response to each others art and the theme. One of the sculptures has its starting point in the cryptozoological phenonema rat king. It is said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined and grow together at their tails, and continues to live and function as one creature.

Previous shows includes the 3rd Beijing International Art Biennale (CH),
Sweet Punch: Recent Nordic Video (NZ) and ARS 06 at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki (FI).

Dennis Ropar is a 38 years old Male artist born in Australia, currently working in STIRLING, South Australia, Australia.

Dennis Ropar- Melbourne Pop Artist- b.1971
The art of Dennis Ropar is a pastiche of iconic imagery, pop-art references and gloriously kitsch colour. Avoiding categorization of a particular style or movement, Ropar’s work incorporates the previous five decades in art and design; 1950’s pin up girls, 1960’s Pop Art, 1980’s comic and graffiti culture and 1990’s post-modernity, all of which he amalgamates and recycles to bestow new meaning.
Dennis Ropar has recently achieved sell out solo shows at Jackman Gallery, St Kilda in April '08 & March '09 where his paintings sold between $6,500-$19,000.
Dennis Ropar has had over 30 solo exhibitions across the country over the last eight years.
Ropar’s CV can be seen on his comprehensive website- www.dennisropar.com

With a background in street art Cochran went on to develop a form of urban realist narrative painting with a focus on the marginalised human subject. He was widely recognised for his mural paintings and his community arts projects across South Australia, and went on to exhibit and work in Europe. In 2004 he exhibited his aerosol pointillist paintings which lead to his unique technique of drip painting.
Karen Standke

Karen Standke is a 36 years old Female artist born in Germany, currently working in Victoria, Australia.

The underlying theme of Karen’s work is a love of country and nature.
Karen gives us pause to probe our relationship with our surroundings…her landscapes evoke our sense of belonging or alienation and highlight our ability to preserve or destroy. The paintings give us room to explore and discover whether our response to the land is spiritual understanding or material desire.

The dichotomies can be subtle- Karen places us on the shores of a glorious salt lake in remote Australia , yet we cannot cross…
It is part of a military training zone, with “unexploded material beneath the lake surface”…(Lake Hart, Woomera landscape II, 2006).
We are engaged by the beautiful purple flowers in the Tibooburra region of remote NSW, Australia, that upon closer inspections reveal themselves to be an introduced and invasive plant.

Offsetting these reminders of human interference is the immediate and powerful force of nature which unfolds across Karen’s canvases. Her ability to capture the grandeur helps us ground ourselves… Standke paints the wild coastal cliffs, battered for centuries by the relentless wind and water,
she manages to translate the majestic rise and rocky outline of the mountains, the thundering storms that sweep the desert, and the incredibly green and
transformed landscape after the December rains in Central Australia.

Karen gives us a source for inspiration and respect, a means to commune with what has gone before and will be ever after-

The Spirit of the land.

I traverse two main areas in my work: Cartography and Monologue.

Expression, awareness, unwrapping and unbound is traversed in my Monologue work. This work is an ongoing series entitled 'SELF TALK' that is a revealing of all that is personal, silent, hidden, unvoiced and unknown. The adjacent photograph is a still shot from a work entitled 'Sleeping Beauty' in which the concept of sleeping is discussed in relation to responses of diverse life experience. 'SELF TALK' is a positioning of all that is private into the public realm. It gives creative voice to the stories of a life it is an expressive response that trawls and discovers the realm of story telling into to create beauty out of darkness, and dark out of the light.

The cartographic work is an exploration of all that is wrapped, bounded, restrained and automated. It is a practice that seeks not to suggest that mapping is innately wrong. But rather there are other unimagined possibilities for exploring the space and places we habituate. Invited to map the Melbourne International Fringe Festival for Headquarters in 2009 and having mapped the glass structure that is CUBE 37 Frankston Arts Centre I re-imagine both personal and public spaces.

We use hybrid art forms - video, audio, performance, dance, theatre, film, song and networked digital media to tell stories about the places that we live in.

Each year Kickstart Arts employs professional artists to work with communities to create a program of exciting projects.
