Flintstones, meet the Flintstones, They’re a modern stoneage family.
From the, town of Bedrock, They’re a page right out of history.

When you’re, with the Flintstones, Have a yabba dabba doo time, A dabba doo time, You’ll have a gay old time!

The Flintstones is an animated American television sitcom that ran from 1960 to 1966 on ABC. Produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions (H-B) and celebrating 50 years on the air in 2010, The Flintstones is about a working class Stone Age man’s life with his family and his next door neighbor and best friend. It has since been re-released on both DVD and VHS.

This show played like a prehistoric Honeymooners and its popularity rested heavily on its juxtaposition of modern-day concerns in the Stone Age setting.

Meet The Flintstones

Fred and Wilma Flintstone and their best friends, Barney and Betty Rubble, live in the prehistoric city of Bedrock but faces the problems of contemporary working-class life. After a day at the rock quarry, Fred and Barney arrive home in a stone-age vehicle with stone wheels and a fringe on top. Their lives revolve around their home, friends, and leisure activities: a world of drive-ins, bowling, and their “Water Buffalo” lodge. They have a baby dinosaur and a saber tooth tiger as the family dog and cat. In 1962 and 1963, Pebbles and Bamm Bamm appears as the daughter and adopted son of the Flintstones and Rubbles respectively.

“The Flintstones” was a Hanna-Barbera Production that originally aired on ABC-TV in prime time from 1960-1966. It was network television’s first animated series to which there were 166 original episodes.

The original name of the series in which a pilot was even made, was “The Flagstones”. When it was realized that the “Hi and Lois” characters’ surname was Flagstone, the name was changed. The name “Gladstones” was considered and actually appeared on a number of sketches before the final change to “Flintstones”.

Living in the stone-age didn’t keep The Flintstones from enjoying the best of modern conveniences. From a ram’s horn telephone (a must for Wilma’s gossip sessions) to a skin-topped convertable with stone wheels, the series was constantly showing today’s nifty gadgets with a stone-age twist. Even something as simple as the paperboy throwing Fred his Sunday edition was a major hoot — especially when the oversized stone tablet nailed him in the head.

The original opening sequence features Fred driving home from work, racing through the streets of Bedrock. Upon arriving home he runs his car into the garage, then goes in the house to sit down and watch TV (Not too dissimilar than the opening of “the Simpsons”).

In the original closing sequence, Fred turns off the TV set, covers the bird cage, and attempts to put the cat out, which puts Fred out instead. These sequences were only used for the first two seasons and many people have never seen them, because the later, more familiar opening and closing themes were usually used for all episodes during syndication.

It wasn’t until the third season when the opening and closing sequences had the “Meet the Flintstones” theme song. This opening shows Fred sliding down the tail of his dino-crane at the quarry, then Wilma, Dino and the cat pile in the car where they drive to the movies. The closing sequence shows them driving from the movies to a drive-in restaurant where Fred orders ribs which tip over the car, and then drive home, and Fred still attempts to put the cat out.
These sequences were changed slightly throughout the seasons to include the Rubbles and then again to include Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm.

The very first episode aired on September 30, 1960. Titled “The Flintstone Flyer” (P-2), it was actually the second Flintstones episode produced (after The Swimming Pool, P-1), but the first to air. Fred and Barney want to go bowling instead of being dragged to the opera by Wilma and Betty. Fred fakes being sick and Barney flies them to the bowling alley in his hand-cranked helicopter!!!!!

Characters

Frederick Joseph “Fred” Flintstone – The main character. Fred is an accident-prone quarry worker and head of The Flintstone clan. He is quick to anger (usually over inconsequential matters) but a very loving husband and father.

Wilma Pebble Slaghoople Flintstone – Fred’s wife. She is somewhat more intelligent and level-headed than her husband.

Barney Rubble – Fred’s best friend and next door neighbor. He and Fred are both members of the fictional “Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes” (Lodge No. 26), a men-only club paralleling real-life fraternities such as the Freemasons.

Betty Rubble – Barney’s wife and best friend of Wilma.

Pebbles Flintstone – The Flintstones’ infant daughter.

Bamm-Bamm Rubble – the Rubbles’ abnormally strong adopted son. His name comes from the only words he ever speaks: “Bamm” and “Bamm”.

Dino – The Flintstones’ pet dinosaur, who barks like a puppy.

Baby Puss – The Flintstones’ pet saber toothed cat.

Mr. Slate – Fred Flintstone’s hot tempered boss at the stone quarry.

Films and subsequent TV series

Following the show’s cancellation in 1966, a film based upon the series was created. The Man Called Flintstone was a musical spy caper that parodied James Bond and other secret agents. The movie was released to theaters on August 3, 1966 by Columbia Pictures. It was released on DVD in Canada in March 2005 and in United States in December 2008.

The show was revived in the early 1970s with Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm having grown into teenagers, and several different series and made-for-TV movies (broadcast mainly on Saturday mornings, with a few shown in prime time); including a series depicting Fred and Barney as police officers, another depicting the characters as children, and yet others featuring Fred and Barney encountering Marvel Comics superhero The Thing and comic strip character The Shmoo — have appeared over the years. The original show also was adapted into a live-action film in 1994, and a prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, which followed in 2000.

After the Emmys, the Grammys are onto it as well. That is, the new Grammy.com is using Drupal — and Pressflow to be specific. The Grammy Awards, or Grammys, are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for outstanding achievements in the music industry. Cool!

NVidia

NVidia recently launched their new Tegra developer community on Drupal. See nvidia . NVidia came to Acquia to help them get the site built. Development was done by Chapter Three (an Acquia partner) and Wiredcraft, while Acquia hosts the site on the Acquia Hosting platform and provides 24×7 monitoring and support. They are also using Mollom to protect their site against spammers.

VT4 using Drupal

Flemish commercial television channel VT4 is using Drupal on vt4.be . VT4 is part of ProSiebenSat.1 Media, the second-largest broadcasting group in Europe. Cool!

Ashley Tisdale

Emmys

Glamour, glitter, and champagne all around because Drupal has gone Hollywood. The Emmys website has just switched to Drupal in preparation for the announcement of nominees tomorrow, and the subsequent annual Emmy award ceremony later this year. The Emmys are annual awards to outstanding television programs and performers.

Emmys.com was previously a static HTML website, with a few custom PHP components. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (the parent organization) migrated to Drupal largely because of the positive experiences various Academy members and other industry leaders have had with using Drupal.

The new Emmys.com is a joint project of volunteers from the Academy’s television industry leadership, its staff, and Emmy magazine — they built the site with the help of Metal Toad Media. In addition to migrating their main website, emmys.com, they’re also in the progress of converting some of their other related properties.

The Japanese Fujifilm, with more than 75,000 employees the world’s largest photographic and imaging company, is using Drupal for a community site at http://www.myfinepix.com. It is a website where FinePix camera owners come together to share images, knowledge and inspiration. The site features galleries, forums, photoblogs, news, competitions, user profiles and much more. A good showcase for some of Drupal’s social media features.

Russian Forbes magazine

The website of the Russian Forbes magazine was recently redesigned using Drupal

AT&T

AT&T, the largest provider of local long distance telephone services in the United States, is using Drupal on for an add-on site called AT&T Apps Beta.

The website requires you to log in so there isn’t much to explore without creating an account. Either way, AT&T Apps Beta is a platform for connecting highly involved AT&T customers with access to the latest and greatest mobile applications.

Can you see a pattern here? Another large organization using Drupal to build an add-on site. Once an organization has its feet wet with Drupal after implementing a couple of micro- or add-on sites, you start to see Drupal bubble to the top of the organization or to larger and larger web properties. Either way, it is great to see one of the largest technology companies use Drupal.

Zappos

Long term Drupal developer Jeff Eaton continues to inspire and as a result, Zappos started using Drupal on zappos.com . Zappos.com is an e-commerce website with more than $1 billion in revenue, and well known for their legendary customer service and culture.

Jamaican Prime Minister using Drupal

The website of Bruce Golding, the Prime Minister of Jamaica is using Drupal: see opm.gov.jm .

King of Belgium goes Drupal

Following hot on the heels of US President Barack Obama, Albert II, King of the Belgians, just relaunched his website on Drupal. Check it out at monarchie.be. The site was built by Connexion and Internet Architects.

British Government using Drupal

The British Government is using Drupal on an innovation initiative to encourage developers and designers share new ideas and showcase their work: see http://innovate.direct.gov.uk. Directgov’s main site, direct.gov.uk is the official government website for citizens. It provides information and services from across government organizations.

Whitehouse.gov using Drupal

Big, exciting news! The flag ship website of the U.S. government, Whitehouse.gov, just relaunched on Drupal. This is a big day for Drupal, and for Open Source in government, and something all of us in the community should be very proud of.

Australian Prime Minister using Drupal

usaspending.gov using Drupal

Vivek Kundra, the CIO of the United States, unveiled the new IT spending dashboards at usaspending.gov earlier this week. Tim O’Reilly has all the details in his blog post titled Radical transparency: the new federal IT dashboard. In short, the dashboards are designed to help CIOs of individual government agencies get a handle on the effectiveness of government IT spending. The site was built with Drupal.

This is a fundamental change in the way government is going to be run, and it is great to see Drupal play a small role in that. Great stuff!

Dutch government using Drupal

The Dutch government is using Drupal for the website of the State Service for Cultural Heritage. The site was built by Cinnamon.

French government portal using Drupal

After the French Ministry for Health, Youth and Sport using Drupal started using, the French government switched its official government portal to Drupal! Check it out at gouvernement.fr.
The site was built by the French Government Multimedia Team and Adyax Experts (an Acquia partner). About 10 persons worked on it for several months. Most of the work was spent on building custom migration tools to switch from SPIP Agora to Drupal.

New York State Senate using Drupal

More proof that Drupal and open government is a great match: the New York State Senate just relaunched its website on Drupal and there is a lot to like. Check out their new site at nysenate.gov.

Obama using Drupal

Drupal is no stranger to the political arena, and has been used for many campaign and government sites before. Recovery.gov, though, is a definite coup for Drupal — there are not many Drupal sites that have their own post on Whitehouse.gov. Or on the Huffington Post. Or is featured on CNN all day long. Or has its own YouTube promo by the US President. Unbelievable!
