The Firefly Sculptural Firebowl

The Firefly is a deep, large bowl that shields fire from wind within its three petals while providing an inviting space to gaze into the fire. Joining the cut off from the King Isosceles to the form of a Big Bowl O' Zen, the Firefly resembles a large flower bud or seed pod.

A study in contrasts, the firefly uses light and dark to create a heightened illusion of depth, a chiaroscuro effect accentuating shadow and flame. Like fireflies captured in a jar on a summer eve, the sparks circle enclosed, glowing stars of your own.

Baroque painter Caravaggio used a powder of dried fireflies to prepare photosensitive canvases 200 years before the invention of photography. Images projected onto this magical surface would fluoresce for half an hour, giving him time to lay the broad strokes of a painting using white lead mixed with minerals visible in the dark. His visions have become known as masterpieces of his time… what visions might you conceive while gazing into the shifting fire inside your Firefly?

The Fireball Sculptural Firebowl

The Fireball is my most monumental sculptural firebowl, nearly 300 pounds of formed and welded steel. Dramatic in its bold simplicity, the Fireball is massive, monolithic, deep with meaning. The sphere is often seen as a symbol of the world, of unity, of peace and of perfection. The sheer mass of this simple orb exudes celestial presence— a planetary weight and gravity.

Before Galileo, our world seemed circled by spheres in elliptical orbits, winking and flickering as they traveled the night sky. Early cultures saw the planets as divine presences or emissaries of the gods. Over the ages, history, mythology, science and religion looked to the sky for inspiration and answers. We set the measurement of the seasons by tracking these wandering stars, even as some ascribe to them the power to determine or reveal our fates.

Pythagoras spoke of music in the spacing of the spheres, but we experience the heavens as points of light. We call our planets now by the names of ancient Greek gods and the meanings of those names show their origins in the sky— brightness, the shiner, the fiery, the light bringer and the gleamer.

The Big Bowl O Canada Sculptural Firebowl

The Big Bowl O Canada takes it's name from Canada's National Anthem, composed in 1880 by Calixa Lavallée, a talented musician whose father worked as a woodcutter, blacksmith and luthier. Although many variations of the song exist, in multiple languages, the tune is the same for all. I couldn't resist the connection between music and sculpture, between firebowls, lumberjacks and blacksmithing. The idea of art arising from hard work, skill and a grounding in the natural world is at the heart of this design.

The motif was inspired by a custom Great Bowl O' Fire for a Calgary client who requested a stylized flame in the shape of a maple leaf. I liked the results so much that it moved me to create a design especially for the Great White North.

I've shipped firebowls all across Canada, from Vancouver to Halifax. As the second largest land mass on earth, that's a lot of ground to cover. Filled with natural beauty and wonders, peopled by folks who love the outdoors, I can't think of any place that has more use for a firebowl that is solid and durable, beautiful and meaningful, large enough to gather a group of friends under a huge night sky.

The Meridian Sculptural Firebowl

The Meridian's canted bowl is a study in balance and an homage to the phases of the moon. I love the way the crescent form of this bowl changes from different angles, just as the moon waxes and wanes. This firebowl is a perfect illustration of Nathaniel Hawthorne's statement, "Moonlight is sculpture."

Man has ever sought to grasp the moon, the lunar spell woven thick in our stories and songs. Lit from within, the Meridian has the appearance of a great harvest moon, glowing orange and dusky in the night. In dark, the base disappears into the shadows leaving only the glowing center visible, as though suspended at the low horizon.

The Meridian is a perfect solution for locations prone to high winds. You can rotate the bowl on its base to cradle the fire in a protected space or to control smoke and sparks. Although all of my raised firebowls radiate heat to the upper body, the Meridian reflects more heat higher, making it one of the most practical for heating the outdoors.

Eternal Flame Sculptures

I first created the Eternal Flame Sculptures as a display tool for the Ann Arbor Art Fair— I couldn't have live fire in my firebowls at the fair and I didn't like any of the available options for fake flames. Then I had the idea to cut my own flames and enamel them. With the addition of FireCrystals, they made a great display! A small collection of these sculptures would be an amazing way to turn an unused fireplace into a cheerful blaze that never needs feeding and never goes out.

Each Eternal Flame Sculpture is a one of a kind sculpture that will never be repeated. Although their bright colors and cheerful look could fool you, they are made from 100% recycled steel. The bases come from a local factory that cuts LOTS of holes into thick steel and sends the left over circles to the scrap yard. The flames are cut from scrap steel left over from making my firebowls.

Eternal Flame Sculptures are basically eternal… They're cut from heavy steel and finished with powder coat enamel that is suitable for indoor or outdoor display. But don't leave them in your firebowl or fireplace when in use— the powder coat enamel will burn off at 400°F.

The Eternal flames are an open edition of sculpture— each is signed and numbered, but there is no predetermined limit to how many I'll make. They're too cool to limit to a set number.

The King Isosceles Sculptural Firebowl

The King Isosceles firebowl embodies an intriguing geometric aesthetic within the deep curves cut into its profile. The lines of the King Isosceles speak of a pleasing simplicity, a clean and subtle elegance. These lines are a symbol of reason and rigor, of comfort and symmetry, of civilization built on classical forms and knowledge.

Western culture has long held the austere beauty of Euclidean geometry to be a glimpse into an otherworldly system of perfection and certainty, even as its proofs are grounded solidly in the natural laws of the material world.

As a sculptor, I'm fascinated by form, volume and geometry. The simplest designs are often the most difficult to get right— they must meet a higher standard of perfection than organic forms, as any error immediately draws the eye. For me, art is best when it overlaps myth and math, symbol and science, form and function.

Abraham Lincoln was known to read Euclid's Geometry by candlelight, convinced its mathematical proofs would quicken his logic and oratory in the courtroom. The King Isosceles firebowl is a modernist homage to this classical approach to eloquence, and my hope is that it will inspire your stories told round the blaze.

The Great Flaming Lotus offers a contemplative centerpiece, a modern mandala, a flower of the enlightened mind. Lauded by poets, priests and chieftains, the lotus flower is rich in historic mystical symbolism.

A symbol of the sun, creation and rebirth, beautiful blooms transcend roots held deep in mud. At night, the flower sinks below the water only to rise again at dawn in a cycle that spawned stories of the sun being born from the first lotus blossom. The lotus embodies a promise of positive change, reflecting expansion of the soul and clarification of the mind.
