Cayman Islands | “Changes” Fine Art Exhibition

“Changes” is the first fine art exhibition of 2012 to be presented by Arteccentrix following the closure of the gallery space in Dorcy Drive at the end of 2011.

Never one to rest on her laurels Nickola McCoy-Snell teamed up with Woods Furniture & Design to produce an outstanding show featuring fifteen artists and a wide collection of original paintings, sculptures, batiks and photographs and is hosted in over 4400 square feet of space at the Woods Furniture and Design premises in Airport Road (located just behind the Fosters airport store).

The offer of the space from Woods was, to Nickola, manna from heaven and from the moment she first set foot in what was previously the second floor showroom, the possibilities were endless and exciting. Her vision from those initial visits has now translated into possibly the largest fine art exhibition and sale ever seen on Grand Cayman. The show opened on February 23 2012 and reaction to both the artwork and the space has been astounding. The show will run until April 6 2012 and can be visited during the hours of 9am to 5pm, Mondays to Saturdays.

Following a contemporary and abstract theme, several of the featured artists have worked to produce some extremely interesting pieces, in some cases very far removed from their more established styles.

This was really the underlying theme of “Changes” where artists were asked to consider a departure from their established or preferred style in order to reflect the abstract, modern, contemporary theme of the exhibition. Several have responded by producing some excellent work that probably would have otherwise remained either unseen or possibly never considered and sits quite comfortably alongside pieces by artists already firmly familiar and established in the genre.

We feel that this exhibition once again underlines the fact that in the fine art field, Cayman can offer a level of work and talent that can and does compete extremely favourably with what can be seen in almost any other city or country around the world.

In some ways, dispelling the misconception that small island nations such as Cayman are cultural deserts is something with which artists of all kinds have to struggle and it is only through constant application and determination that these views are slowly but surely eroded. This is just one of the motivations for Arteccentrix owner and artist Nickola McCoy-Snell and why she persists in bringing such events to fruition and sending a clear message that it is a narrow stereotype and proclaims loudly and demonstrably that art in Cayman has developed at an extraordinary pace over the past couple of decades and now offers art lovers, buyers and collectors not only the chance to view and buy original pieces of widely varied and undisputed quality but to enjoy them in exactly the kind of setting that they warrant.

If you have not yet had a chance to visit the show please do make time for a visit. Although a number of pieces have already been sold, most will remain on display until the show ends and those that do have to be taken down will be replaced.

You will find some of the finest batik work in the Caribbean region by artist Robert McKendrick, stunning abstracts on large canvases by Al Ebanks, Gordon Solomon, Nickola McCoy-Snell and Leigh Pawling, fine art photography both abstract and realistic by Amar Sheow and Steve Joscelyn, the intriguing and complex sculptures of Scott Swing, plus more beautiful canvases from top artists including Randy Chollette and his wife Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette, Avril Ward with an unexpected venture into the abstract, alongside landscapes and still life pieces, explosive colour from the likes of Lorna Reid, David Bridgeman and Renate Seffer and delicate realism from Nancy Murphy.

This exhibition offers something for everyone and all visitors are welcome. Come along and be inspired and proud of what local artisans continue to achieve and you may well come away as the proud owner of something truly unique and special.

National Gallery Of The Cayman Islands Exclusive Poster Prints

Arteccentrix has been working with the National Gallery Of The Cayman Islands to produce a series of reproductions from the NGCI collection.

To coincide with the opening of the new National Gallery building the first poster prints featuring selected works of artists including Carol Owen, Jan Barwick, Charles Long, Joanne Sibley and Janet Walker were approved and completed.

The posters measure 16 x 20 and can be purchased only at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. They make a great memento of your visit to the gallery and indeed to the the Cayman Islands.

We are extremely happy to have worked on this project with the staff at NGCI and are still working with them to bring more quality products online in the months ahead.

The idea for a new range of poster prints had been something that we had been considering for some time and when the NGCI contacted us to see if we could produce a series of posters specifically for them, it was the catalyst for us to work on the new format. It was very satisfying to see the end product after several weeks of experimentation with a variety of substrates.

As a result a variation of this new product line will eventually be made available through Arteccentrix initially featuring a selection of Nickola McCoy’s own paintings. Availability and other possible outlets for these are yet to be announced. We will also be offering similar poster prints to other artists and wholesale/retail customers as another alternative to our existing fine art giclees on paper and canvas.

We feel that this affordable but quality option is a great addition to our fine art printing services which for the past four years has concentrated on producing paper and canvas reproductions of museum quality.

Sadly Missed - Artist Sue Widmer

Sue Widmer, an English born artist whose work has been much loved in the Cayman Islands for many years sadly lost her battle with cancer earlier this year and Cayman lost a beautiful talent, not to mention a wonderful lady who will be missed by all who knew her.

Not only a friend, Sue was a great supporter of Arteccentrix from the beginning and her work was always popular and sold readily whenever it was available. We can claim the honour and pleasure of having sold the last two original pieces that Sue created on the island and to think that there will be no more of her signature style interpretations of local Cayman life is sad to reflect upon.

Her last work was an emotive depiction of Hog Sty Bay in George Town, a scene familiar to everyone who has lived in or visited Grand Cayman. Sue loved to paint local landscapes and seascapes and also local people who she captured with such unique flair and originality.

In order to continue and honour Sue’s legacy we have been kindly given permission by her family to produce and promote all future reproductions of her wonderful paintings and we have set up a gallery of the images currently available through Arteccentrix.

We will also be making prints of most of Sue’s paintings from the past few years available far more easily to international customers through our third party print on demand partners and will provide further details as soon as we have the service up and running. In the meantime, prints can still be ordered from us and we will ship worldwide so contact us with your requirements and we will be happy to arrange your orders.

Art For Charity – 100 In 100 For 100

I Stand Alone - SOLD

Following on from her recent “Eccentric” solo show opening at the end of May 2011, Nickola announced her 100 paintings in 100 days project and began work on it almost immediately.

The idea behind the project is to raise money for the Sunrise Adult Center, and Nickola will paint 100 paintings over a 100 day period, every one of which will be sold for $100. In this way she hopes to add to the money she raises from the sale of artwork from the show to donate to the Center’s fine arts program.

The Sunrise clients attend a class held by Nickola every Monday morning at the Arteccentrix building in Dorcy Drive, where they get to learn a variety of art techniques and skills and put them into practice creating their own artwork. To enable the classes to continue, Nickola explains, we need to be able to cover the cost of materials and in the past we have had the generous help of Mr Justin Bodden at the Hobby Shop in Governors Square in conjunction with the Rotary Club but these costs are ongoing so it is vital that we continue to try and raise the necessary funds. It would be a real shame if we were to lose this activity, particularly after the effort and generosity that enabled us to get it up and running.

Nickola donates her time freely to the class and is determined to ensure that thus avenue of expression, learning and enjoyment continues to be possible.

So far, 15 paintings have been completed and more than half of them sold already. “This is a great start for the project and we have been delighted with the response from kind and generous supporters both here and abroad”, says Nickola.

Nickola McCoy-Snell announces her first solo exhibition in almost three years which will open on May 31 2011 at Arteccentrix in Dorcy Drive, George Town Grand Cayman from 5pm onwards.

This show represents the long awaited return of Nickola and her first full body of work, the majority of which has never been exhibited before, since 2007. Nickola has decided to donate a proportion of the show’s earnings to the Sunrise Adult Learning Centre to assist them with their ongoing arts program so all sales will help this worthy local charity who provide care, activities and support for the disabled in our local community.

You can expect to see several of her hallmark large abstract works but, as she has shown time and time again, the diversity of style, subject matter and methodology is what really distinguishes her collections and “Eccentric” will be no exception. This is an exciting and refreshing show that many people feel is long overdue.

Arteccentrix will also be making a selection of the new works available as prints on a made to order basis, an option which they hope will enable far more visitors to purchase some of nickola’s latest work.

Refreshments will be available on the night and we hope that you will be able to join us for the opening. The show will be up throughout the month of June and customers are always welcome to drop by, have a coffee and meet the artist in the gallery which now doubles as her studio space.

After moving from our previous location in Governors Square on Seven Mile Beach, the past three weeks have been a busy time for us at Arteccentrix, spent preparing our new George Town home in Dorcy Drive, across the road from Car City’s premises. (Cayman Art Gallery Move – Press Article)

The new building will serve as the studio and gallery of Cayman artist Nickola McCoy-Snell and visitors can regularly find her working in the new space.

One of the greatest pleasures of working in the fine art business is being surrounded by beautiful art each and every day. It’s something you cannot fail to appreciate even when a particular piece may not be to your individual liking. It never ceases to surprise me how my own views on individual paintings or sculptures can fluctuate and change over time spent in their company.

Living and working here in the beautiful Cayman Islands, it is easy for others to imagine that life is one long round of white sand beaches, beautiful tropical sunsets and an environment where art could not possibly play much of a role, competing as it must with such natural beauty.

Of course, wherever any of us may live, daily life usually ensures that leisure time is invariably rationed and is often in far shorter supply than we might wish. Living in paradise can easily be taken for granted as I’m sure many people would confirm.

At Arteccentix We believe that no matter what the geographical location of a business, or its nature, art can play a vital role in improving any working environment and one of the aspects of our own business that we greatly enjoy, is helping companies bring art into their places of business and seeing the very positive results of their decision to do so.

Of course, to many companies operating in the Cayman Islands the value of art to their business has long been recognized and some have built up enviable and beautiful collections. To others, the question of the net worth of buying and displaying artwork continues to be an area of conflicting opinion.

When we talk to organizations in both the public and private sector, we really do try to understand their corporate philosophy, what they are really looking for and the corporate or business aims behind those desires.

Depending on the personalities involved and the dynamics of businesses large and small, finding the perfect solutions for a particular project can be likened to peeling back the layers of an onion and this in itself is what makes identifying their wishes and finding a perfect resolution such an enjoyable task for us at Arteccentrix.

So why do companies want to buy art? Why should they? What benefits does art bring to a place of business? Is art something you have considered for your own business or have you never given it much thought at all?

Let’s look at these questions and try to put forward some of the main reasons why investing in art has been such a positive move for so many places of business and why many companies around the world have invested millions in fine art.

Art tends to make people feel more productive, creative and fulfilled. Various studies have shown this to be the case. Art is uplifting and often boosts the mood and the morale of people who find themselves in close proximity to it, even when, subjectively, the art in question may not entirely match their tastes or preferences. The effect has been likened to that experienced by people on hearing a favourite song or piece of music.

It follows that art in public places can have wide ranging effects on all those who come into contact with it. It has the capacity to inspire, attract, and enlighten – all positive and desirable impressions to leave on your visitors, customers and clients – new and existing.

Think for a moment about health care facilities, where art of all forms has long been recognized as something which makes everyone feel better. Not just those who are patients, but everyone who has cause to be in or around the facility. Hospitals, examining rooms, clinics, doctors’ offices, public waiting areas and lobbies – art is widely recognized and used as a valuable asset to healing and calming and has a profound and very important additional effect on the impression given of the quality of care being provided.

No doubt many of you reading this have sat in stark, bare walled institutional waiting rooms, or in others with nothing but graphic medical diagrams and dire warnings adorning the walls. Compare such an environment to one displaying some beautiful artwork and the effect it has on those waiting, often nervously, as well as its reassuring message with regard to their perception of the quality of the organization in which they are placing their trust.

Fine art makes the working environment more pleasant for everyone. Anyone fortunate enough to have a beautiful piece or pieces of art in their own office can attest to that, but why reserve the positive effects of art for just a few privileged senior personnel? By placing art in public areas where people tend to gather, to share ideas and communicate, you will stimulate, through interest and curiosity, their ability to think far more creatively.

Your art and your decision to display it also tells people a great deal about your corporate culture and that you care deeply about it without anyone having to say a word. It also illustrates, unequivocally, a dedication to the arts in general.

Thoughtfully and skillfully placed art can also do a great deal to enhance your brand and how it is perceived by others. It tells visitors something about you as soon as they arrive and when they leave, it has left an indelible impression upon them. Art does not simply beautify, it educates and illustrates and it is effectively a form of indoor signage that communicates your style, corporate attitudes, regional commitment and even national identity and pride.

It may surprise some to know that as gallery owners, we frequently have visitors who have specifically asked for details of a company’s whereabouts simply because they have heard of a particular piece of art on their premises. Others mention that they have come by way of other companies who had on display some uplifting and inspiring artwork and have come looking for more – perhaps for their own homes or businesses. To many, this unseen power of art is something that can have such positive benefits for their organization and the public’s perception of their business.

Art really does pay for itself. It gives returns every time you look at it and every time others look at it. Indeed, fine art can truly be considered an investment in people; your people, whether customers, employees or investors. So, whilst in many cases fine art can be considered a financial investment, it has a whole lot more to offer than simple monetary equity and over the course of time will repay you over and over again.

Fine Art Prints – Tips For Artists

We do get a lot of enquiries regarding prints from artists who are looking to move into reproductions and thought it would be worth adding to our past articles on the topic in order to clear up some of the more common questions and problems.

We produce prints on both paper and canvas in a wide range of sizes and this is largely done to order.

One common misconception that should be clarified is the term “giclee“. Basically this refers to the printing process and nothing more although the term is often used very loosely. Bear in mind when comparing prices for prints that you are often comparing apples with oranges because the standard of work, materials and finish can vary greatly.

For us to produce a giclee on canvas will take a minimum of five days (excluding the digital imaging process which has to be completed beforehand). This is due to the fact that there are minimum curing times for for both prints and sealants and neglecting either can result in quality issues. We also hand stretch all canvases onto custom made stretchers.

If you are an artist and want us to produce prints of your work that you will sell yourself, our prices are tailored so that you will have the best opportunity to make a profit at the point of sale. We consider our price/quality equation one of the best in the market, which is not to say you won’t find cheaper deals elsewhere if you look, but in terms of attention to detail and the finished product, we consider it vital to maintain the highest standard of work.

In order to produce a quality reproduction, it is essential that you start out with a digital image of the highest resolution possible. Digital photographs come in all shapes and sizes but we require a high resolution image in RAW format. There are several reasons for this but the main one is that it makes the final preparation of the print file much simpler and quicker for us.

If you do not have an image of the artwork, but still have the original, we can do the capture and processing for you at a modest charge of CI$25.00 for up to two separate images. Prices for more than two images are negotiated on a case by case basis.

One of the most common problems we encounter is image files that are simply too small to be of any use for anything other than very small print sizes. You cannot simply upsize an image to several times its physical size and not expect deterioration in the form of pixelation, loss of detail etc. This is not something that can be “fixed” using imaging software.

If you are going to capture images yourself you will need a digital SLR camera capable of taking photographs in RAW format at high resolutions. Most point and shoot cameras will not be up to the job, at least not at the time of writing, but even an entry level DSLR will be adequate provided the photographer has some basic skills and can take a sharp, correctly exposed photograph with good lighting and no glare. A poor photograph, after all, is a poor photograph, no matter how good the camera!

Digital files do have physical limitations, so, the smaller the file, the greater the limitations on print sizes, or, as the industry saying goes; “garbage in, garbage out”. It is therefore imperative that when photographing your artwork for reproduction purposes you start out with the best and highest resolution file possible. Whatever way you look at it it’s a wise investment for an artist because once you have the image, you have it for good and even after the original artwork is sold, you will be able to make reproductions as and when needed in perpetuity.

For these reasons our minimum requirements are something on which we now insist before working on reproducing an artist’s work as to do otherwise would, we consider, be a disservice to both artist and customers and invariably ends in disappointment.

In terms of prints for retailers, we have a stock selection of artwork from several of the island’s leading painters and these can be ordered in a range of sizes on both paper and canvas. Unfortunately, we cannot at present supply these on consignment but wholesale prices are very reasonable. Just contact us for orders large and small.

Retail customers can also choose from the same range of prints and in many cases, original artwork on display in the gallery can also be made available as a print. This depends largely on our contract with the artist and in some cases, we may not have permission to make a reproduction. If this is the case we will happily try to negotiate on your behalf to see if we can come to an arrangement with the artist in question although ultimately, the decision rests entirely with them, as does the price of an individual print.

Arteccentrix Ltd is once again preparing for another unique and fresh solo art exhibition and sale, this time featuring another of Cayman’s most talented and well loved artists, Gordon Solomon, together with his wife Alta Solomon.

The show, entitled “Sweet Life – Infinite Games” is opens on September 23rd at 6pm and all are welcome to join us for an evening of fine art paintings and photography, accompanied as always by some fine wines courtesy of our show sponsors, Tortuga Liquors, to whom we are forever appreciative for their support both of the local arts scene in general and many of our own openings and shows. (The featured wine at this event will be Alice White for the vino lovers among you).

Pepper Patch Gourmet Pepper Jellies another of our regular sponsors will once again be on hand to add a little Cayman spice to the evening’s proceedings.

As with all of our solo shows, the work on display will be entirely new and not seen anywhere before. Whilst we do not wish to give too much away at this early stage, Gordon’s approach to this show has been to produce an entirely unique collection of works which may surprise even those who are already familiar with his trademark styles.

Alta will be showcasing some of her photographic work although at the time of writing we can’t say too much about the theme or content of her pieces.

This husband and wife outing is a first for Arteccentrix although Gordon and Alta have collaborated in the past with shows both locally and internationally.

The show will run from September 23rd until October 9th and we will post more images here and at the Arteccentrix Gallery Facebook page after the show’s opening for anyone who is unable to attend.

We are thrilled that we are able to launch the upcoming season here on Cayman with such an exciting show from two of the nation’s best loved and passionate artists and hope that you will be able to join us, and take the opportunity to meet the artists, on the opening night at the Governor’s Square gallery.

Cayman Art Group Exhibition “10″

This weekend sees the end of our first group exhibition – “10 – Love Hope and the Pursuit of Happiness” and we’ve put together a quick video of a selection of the works that have graced our walls for the large part of this past month.
