Fairchester Women President's Group Embrace VUCA Land!

Stamford, CT Mayor Dan Malloy kicked off the recent special Fairchester Women Presidents' Organization (WPO) group retreat. According to the Mayor, "Women-owned businesses are the fastest growing sector of the small business community and need our support and encouragement." The event was hosted at Stamford resident and Fairchester member, Beth Dempsey's home.

The purpose of the day's activities was to explore the business possibilities in this newly emerging economic landscape. The theme was "Embracing Uncertainty-Welcome VUCA Land!" and was inspired by Nancy Ramsey, a futurist for the CIA who spoke at the WPO's recent conference in San Diego. According to Nancy Ramsey, VUCA stands for Vulnerability, Uncertainty, Chaos and Ambiguity. The women discussed current trends and how they affect their respective businesses and brainstormed ways of maintaining relevance. According to Linda Price, the facilitator, "The biggest challenge the women face is recognizing and changing their current mindset to be able to embrace the current uncertainty and innovate their businesses."

The WPO is a non-profit membership organization for women presidents of multimillion-dollar companies. Members of the WPO take part in professionally-facilitated peer advisory groups in order to coax the 'genius out of the group' and grow their businesses to the next level. As I sit here watching the snow fall all around me on this second day of March, I realize that I am in need for some serious pampering! I want to Spring into life; feel that sense of rebirth just as the daffodils and tulips do after their winter sleep.

The store clerks were nestled, all snug in their shops

A mamma in her ‘kerchief and baby in her lap,
Left bagless for home and a long winter’s nap.

When out in the mall there arose such a clatter,
Clerks sprang from their perch to see what was the matter.
Away to the windows they flew like a flash,
Tore open the registers and got ready for cash.

The moon on the breast of the empty mall plots
Gave the lustre of gloom on the closed-up store lots.
When, what to our sorrowful eyes should appear,
But a miniature Hummer packed-full of new fear.

A little old driver jumped out in a pinch,
We knew at that moment it must be Old Grinch.

One thing I can say about the Artemis Woman company is that we really listen to our consumers and take their suggestions to heart. Artemis Woman Goes Hollywood

You should understand something. Technological savvy is not inbred in this Artemis Woman office. Just as we are learning the benefits of blogging, we are also finding our way around YouTube. So, when Amy and I decided to create our own video, it was one laugh-filled afternoon in the office, starring Amy's foot and my award-winning camera work.

It started out easy. Amy was fretting about her dry feet and reached for the Artemis Woman Heel Smoother. I videoed her gliding the Heel Smoother across her foot. Then we really got creative with the little Flip camera and tried different angles. I started on my knees and ended up on my belly to get really close up to capture all the dead skin flying off her heel. We thought it was excellent footage!

As we moved into the finishing touches with our Topaz Foot Butter, I hear a snicker. Then the UPS man says, "If I didn't know what you ladies do here, I'd have thought I walked into something really strange!"

Well, I am the last of the team to get into "blogging". It certainly took me sometime.. I am not the techno wizard by any means. But I have arrived.
Just like Artemis Woman has " arrived" as a member of the 2008 INC 500 list... this distinction is awesome. We have all worked so hard to get to this place, and it is great to bask in the glow of recognition.

Artemis Woman on the Inc 500 List

As I mentioned in my last posting, Artemis Woman made the Inc 500/5000 List at #464, which is great news for us. Now, I am trying to determine exactly how many women-owned businesses are on the list and where Artemis ranks in that category. So far, I have determined that there are less than 10% women-run companies on this list -- but do not know where we stand among them. I'll let you know when I do, because I thnk that will be bigger news.

The number of women-owned firms continues to grow at twice the rate of all U.S. firms (23 percent vs. 9 percent). There are an estimated 10 million women-owned, privately-held U.S. businesses. (Source: SBA, Office of Advocacy and Business Times, April 2005)

The Inc 500/5000 List is now in its 27th year. I have asked Inc Magazine for historical data regarding how women-owned businesses have faired in years past. It would be very interesting to see how many women were on that first list.

In the meantime, Ann & Lisa are being treated like rock stars!

This is Inc. Magazine's 27th year of naming private, entrepreneurial-minded companies based on three-year sales growth. And in these economic times, this is quite an accomplishment.
Not only do we share this distinction with past honorees such as Microsoft, Oracle & GoDaddy, but we are one of 44 companies on this year's list that are run by women! Imagine, only 44 out of these top 500 companies are run by women!

Artemis Woman's New Nail Catcher blog

As they say, when it rains - it pours! Just about two weeks ago I shared with you that we at Artemis Woman were new to this blogging thing. Now, we not only have one, but have developed a second blog. This new blog is called ToeNail Interruptus which we hope will inspire many to share their odd toenail clipping stories.

For example, when I commuted into NYC, I saw a man on the train who actually took off his shoes and socks to clip his toenails! Yes, this happened on MetroNorth!!!

Why do we want to collect these weird and perhaps gross stories? It's a way to bring attention to our Nail Catcher, a nail clipper that captures nails clippings in a little compartment so the shards don't fly around. Artemis Woman Supports Breast Cancer Research

From the beginning, Ann and Lisa made the decision that their company would be different -- a company created by women for women and supporting women's issues. At the forefront was breast cancer, an issue close and personal.

Artemis Woman states on every package that we donate 2% of profits to support alternative treatments and screenings for women's cancers. Ann and Lisa have made donations every year, even in the early, before-profit days, and they usually add up to more than 2%. But who's counting? Well, we are. Learning to Blog at Artemis Woman

During a recent company conference call, this blog was the subject of discussion. How do we find the time to write something worthy of discussion when our time and resources are limited? Who is our audience? Do we even have an audience. What is this blog's focus? Should this be a marketing or educational tool?

These are the questions that I've been pondering. Blogs are not new. But we at Artemis Woman are very new to blogging. Blogs can be used for personal journals, introducing companies, or educating the public.

In the coming weeks/months, you will see the Artemis Woman Talk blog evolve. We don't know what direction it is going, but you will learn as we do. Watch to see what happens.

It has to be Friday. Somehow, all of the little (and some big) emergencies happen on Friday afternoons! Our latest caper? How about a container of Heel Smoothers waiting in the port of Dublin, and the original bill of lading sitting on my desk in Connecticut? And, those little puppies have to be unloaded by Monday, which can't happen, of course, without that piece of paper.

How many Artemis Women did it take to figure out what to do? Unhappily, 5.But, happily, the women of Ireland will have smooth feet for next weekend.(So, now we are shipping and customs experts.)

Cold Case?

I attended my boyfriend's 40th high school reunion this weekend. Now, a real Artemis Woman probably wouldn't even attend her own reunion, but I call this "paying it forward!"
